From the World of Fitness & Wellness

Articles

By Jamar Edge Director of Fitness & Wellness WELCOME TO 2019!!!!! If you are like me, you are recovering from the holidays and trying to find your “2019 footing.” Now that we’ve exchanged gifts and indulged to our heart’s content, it’s time to get back to work. Many of us will have our resolutions mapped out and I hope hitting the gym is one of them. For those looking to shed a few of those holiday pounds, our Fitness Program has something for everyone. For you who prefer a class setting, we offer more than 80 classes per week. We offer classes for those preferring low impact and for those who want to push the limits. If you are more of the one-on-one type, we have personal trainers on staff that will help you get started with your journey into the world of fitness.

Here are a Few Helpful Tips to Get on a Healthy Resolution Track:

• Do not overeat. Eat in smaller portions and make sure vegetables take up the largest percentage. • Stay hydrated. We all hear from our doctors to make sure we are drinking eight glasses of water per day. • Eat healthy fats. Avocados, olives, salmon, nuts and seeds are all great ways of providing your body with healthy fats. • Minimize your processed food intake. Many of these foods contain unhealthy fats. • Add a little love to your meals. Turn off the TV, silence the phones, put down the tablet/iPad and take time to

connect with those you love. Create a healthy recipe that can inspire a healthy conversation as well as nourish those you love.

Annual Health Awareness Month

Did you know that January is health awareness month for Cervical Health Awareness and National Family Fitness? Let’s make a difference by encouraging the ladies in our lives to make sure they are screened and let’s encourage our loved ones (especially the little ones) to get out and get active.

FitWell Fast Track

If you are looking to work one-on-one with a trainer, we encourage you to stop by and inquire with Zena or Jonathan. They will be happy to help you get started in the right direction. If you aren’t familiar with the Fast Track program, it’s a great way to have a fitness program customized just for you. We offer 4-week and 8-week programs as well as a “Partner Up” option for those of you who want a bit of healthy competition or for those who work better with a partner. For more details, please reach out to myself or one of our FitWell Trainers.

Time and Kindness!

By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge As the end of the year draws closer, I find myself reflecting on life. How exciting it is to have met so many different people from so many different walks of life! I wonder who else will cross my path and what friendships will develop. How will everything fall into place? Sometimes life throws so much at you that you just start putting things together until it all works out. I am raising an eleven-year-old daughter, so I don’t have to explain too much! I find that if you give time and kindness to friends, family, and even people you just met, everything always works out. Now that we are talking about time, let us focus our attention on the different ways that you might want to spend yours. Here is a list of some of the important dates and activities that are coming up this month.

Happy New Year!

January 1st is the start of the New Year! Luckily for me there is a DVR because I am always knocked out before the ball drops. That’s only because I want to enter the New Year fully rested!

(potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soulcrushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box. The show does contain adult themes, language and humor. Tickets are $28 for adults and $25 for students. For more information, call 863-294-7469 or visit their website at theatrewinterhaven.com.

Winter Music Series

Who doesn’t like wine, cheese and live music? If this interests you, head to the Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards (located at 19239 U.S. 27 North Clermont, Florida 34715) on every Saturday in January from 12pm to 4pm! You can also enjoy complimentary wine tours and tastings. You may also purchase wine, beer, soft drinks and of course food! Free admission for all ages. Please visit www. lakeridgewinery.com or call Jose Cabranes at 800-768-9463 for more information.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day January 21st is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2019. He was born on January 15, 1929 and sadly, he was assassinated on April 4, 1968. He is honored in this country for his heroic fight for civil rights and equality for all. He is remembered for his iconic speech “I Have a Dream,” in which he envisioned freedom and liberty for everyone regardless of race or creed.

Do you enjoy the outdoors and gentle giants? If so, you won’t want to miss Crystal Rivers Manatee Festival on Saturday, January 19th from 9am to 5pm and Sunday, January 20th from 9am to 4pm located in Historic Downtown Crystal River. There will be live music, local vendors, seafood, a beer garden and boat tours. The cost is $5 per person and kids 12 and under are free. Parking is located at 1801 NW US Highway 19, Crystal River, FL 34428, which is the mall; however, the festival will run shuttles to Downtown Crystal River from there. For more information, please visit www.gomanateefest.com or call 352-795-3149. It sounds simple, but the truth is, you never have enough time and can never be too kind. Nothing is easy in life, but we must try. The most important things we do in life are taking the time to share our kindness, so think about that as you start off your New Year! Jerusalem Jones and the Dead Sea Scrolls

Fridays, February 22nd, March 1st and 8th Gator Room • 11am Tuition: $20 per student Professor: Dr. Ken “Jerusalem Jones” Hanson has been mesmerizing audiences for years. From Mediterranean lands to Hawaii, and places in between, Ken’s electrifying, witty, and “out of the box” speaking style has made him a frequent commentator on the History Channel (“Banned from the Bible” and “Ancient Aliens”). A master of multi-media presentation, Ken regularly slips into character, to drive home his inspiring and entertaining

messages. A natural storyteller, Dr. Hanson has, through his books, articles, and media appearances, made a rich treasure of ancient texts accessible to everyone. Course Description: Long ago, pieces of leather, inscribed by learned sages, were rolled into Dr. Ken Hanson scrolls, to be read and studied only by a select few. For reasons still unknown to us, they were hidden in mountainous desert caves. Then, on a fateful day in 1947, when an Arab lad was searching for his lost goat, he stumbled upon what was to become the most important archaeological find of the twentieth century – ancient parchments, depicting the life and hopes of an unknown Judean sect. Follow the adventure saga of Dr. Ken Hanson, as he recounts his odyssey from Chicago, as a wide-eyed undergraduate, to Jerusalem, as an inspired scholar, seeking out the mysteries of the 2,000-yearold Dead Sea Scrolls. Changing costume on stage, he morphs into a host of characters, to bring the Scrolls to life. Experience the continuing journey of discovery!

Outstanding Solivita CERT Members Recognized Submitted by the Solivita CERT Team

Your Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) keeps busy throughout the year with many activities. Often they are aimed at maintaining our response skills. This involves refresher training at our regular monthly meetings and an annual Drill in which we exercise our organizational and response skills. Also, the county sponsors Advanced Training Classes on a monthly basis. Other activities pertain to loaning medical equipment via the Resident to Resident (R2R) Resource Center, replacing smoke detector batteries for those who cannot, performing crowd management at community parades, presenting the CheckCall-Compress CPR and AED training classes, and hosting the Stop-the-Bleed classes. And new members undergo a nineclass series of basic training sessions, as prescribed by FEMA, to become certified. The dedicated members of CERT volunteer for all of these! This adds up to a lot of hours—1,995 for Solivita in 2017-2018. In an annual county-wide CERT meeting we acknowledge members from each team and the whole county who have demonstrated extraordinary efforts in support of our CERT aims. This year the Member of the Year for Solivita CERT is Ellen Millar. She has been a steadfast member for several years and can be counted on to properly lead a field Search and Rescue Team as she regularly does in our local drills. In addition, Ellen is a regular member of our Check-Call-Compress Team and is a certified instructor as well. For our smoke detector battery program in the spring, Ellen handles the appointment Ellen Millar schedule for Solivita West and Portofino. With her husband Charlie (also a CERT member), she manages the battery replacement for those areas. For all this and the fact that she is a positive person and influence on our team, Ellen was awarded the Member of the Year award this year! The county-wide CERT Member of the Year is selected from

across all the teams and is selected by the county CERT Coordinator as being the most exemplary CERT member in the whole county. This year the award went to Michael Weitz of Solivita! When the county came to CERT a few years ago with the concept of introducing CPR and AED training across the county, they approached CERT because CERT has teams in Michael Weitz many senior communities and seniors are the target audience of such training. Michael was an immediate supporter of this effort and helped to establish the presentations we use today. Moreover, Michael began organizing the classes for Solivita. We now have nearly 3,000 Solivita residents trained in Check-Call-Compress! If you have taken one of these classes, you probably talked to Michael to sign up and met him at the class. Not only has he worked on all our classes, but he has also arranged to present the training to many other neighborhoods and organizations across the county. This program has changed the outlook for victims of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), such that in many instances the EMTs arrive on-scene to find residents performing CPR and using AEDs. This is improving the survival rate for SCA in Polk County. Besides these efforts, Michael also heads our medical unit and has served many years on the Polk County CERT Association Board, some as its president. Solivita CERT salutes Ellen and Michael for their achievements and award-winning service to their community and Polk County! If you would like to be a part of this kind of volunteer group, contact CERT using the information in the Club Meeting Listing found in each edition of Reflections, or attend a meeting—they’re open to all residents on the first Monday of the month at 7pm in RSF2.

Spa Talk: This Home Remedy Balances the Entire Body … Ever Heard of Sole Water? By Crystal Bethea Owner of Riviera Spa Massage For many years we have been taught that salt is bad for us and has some serious side effects. This is definitely true concerning table salt, which really is bleach processed sodium chloride that’s stripped of minerals. Even sea salt is becoming compromised due to the toxins building up in our oceans from pollutants. Natural Himalayan salt, however, provides 84 trace minerals that the body needs to maintain homeostasis. Did you know that most ailments and diseases are linked to mineral deficiency? This simple solution combining Himalayan salt and water, pronounced so-lay, is an age old natural remedy that has been passed down for centuries due to its amazing benefits.

For utensils, all you would need is a mason jar/glass container with a plastic lid and a wooden or plastic spoon (NO metal tops/utensils. The solution will oxidize materials). Fill a third of your container with Himalayan salt and fill the rest with fresh water, leaving space at the top. Place the lid on and shake up the container to diffuse. Allow solution to sit for 24 hours or until completely dissolved. Now you have your very own sole water! Every morning on an empty stomach, take a plastic/wooden teaspoon of your sole water and put it in a glass of water, then drink. Enjoy the benefits of natural wellness with this easy solution.

The Benefits

A unique ionic energy is released when Himalayan salt and water mix, housing scientifically proven benefits that include: Naturally balances the bodies pH, balances hormones no matter what issues you face, detoxifies, improves hydration, improves mineral status of the body, reduces muscle cramps, helps balance blood pressure and blood sugar, improves sleep, supports weight loss, supports thyroid and adrenals, contains necessary electrolytes, improves digestion, improves energy, increased libido, supports bone health …. the list goes on! I would advise you to do your own research on this and ask your doctor before considering this as a daily supplement.

How to Make and Use Sole Water

May I suggest a high quality Himalayan salt and filtered water?

A FRIEND WHO HAS LEFT US, BUT IS NOT FORGOTTEN Wendell Thompson Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the resident who recently passed away.
