Everyone Loves a Parade! By Jana Malik Director of Activities

From the little ones to the fun active adults and the Solivita Lifestyles Team, everyone loves a parade! There’s no better venue than our beautiful downtown Village Center street. The Lifestyles Activities Department has sporadically met with and toured other active adult clubhouses and nothing compares to Solivita’s Village Center. This month we have not one, not two, but three parades scheduled! See more information about each of these events on the back of the tri-fold calendar insert.

Solivita Car Show Saturday, March 10th from 10am-3pm

Following the Car Show Awards Ceremony, at the end of the show (weather permitting), the approximately 120 cars will descend from the Pro Shop roundabout towards the Ballroom as the attendees cheer them off. VILLAGE DRIVE FROM THE BALLROOM TO THE PRO SHOP ROUNDABOUT IS CLOSED TO VEHICLES FROM 6:30AM3:30PM, EXCEPT TO CAR SHOW PARTICIPANTS. FREEDOM PARK RECREATION ACTIVITIES ARE CANCELLED UNTIL 10:30AM.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Street Party Saturday, March 17th from 6pm-9pm

This will be Solivita’s first street party for this holiday and it will be filled with fun activities, entertainment, entertainers, food and, of course, green beer. The parade starts the evening festivities at 6pm with a resident bagpiper and finishes with a leprechaun stilt walker. This parade will have prizes in four fun categories: Most Green, Luckiest, O’ Funniest, and Best Irish Group.

VILLAGE DRIVE FROM THE BALLROOM TO THE PRO SHOP ROUNDABOUT TEMPORARILY CLOSES TO VEHICLES FROM 8:30AM-9:30AM. FREEDOM PARK RECREATION ACTIVITIES ARE CANCELLED UNTIL 2PM.

From the World of Fitness & Wellness By Jamar Edge Fitness & Wellness Director

We are now three months into 2018 and I hope you are holding tight to those healthy New Year’s resolutions. Being a native Floridian, we are slowly approaching two of my favorite seasons of the year - spring and summer!!! In welcoming our warmer spring weather, here are some healthy spring activities that you may want to give a try. 1. Cooking – One of my favorite activities. Spring brings into season fresh fruits and veggies such as apricots, asparagus, broccoli, mangoes, spinach, and many others that will be a healthy addition to your diet.

motion.” Well I can assure you, our outdoor recreation sports will definitely keep your body in motion. We offer a variety of activities, such as softball, pickleball (one of the most popular and fastest growing sports nationwide), tennis, horseshoes, and shuffleboard. If you are new to any of these games/sports, reach out to that club’s respective contact (see the Club Meeting List in Reflections). Many of the sports offer “newbie” lessons for those interested in learning the sport (see A Touch of Class in Reflections). Prefer to test it out on your own? Our courts have open time slots for those who just want to go out and enjoy the sport and weather.

2. Hiking – Though Florida is void of mountains and such, we do have a number of hiking trails in the nearby area. Do some research on locations and go out and enjoy nature.

Be sure to take full advantage of the Florida spring. I challenge you all to get up, get out, and get your body in motion!!!

3. Jogging/Biking – The excuse, “It’s too chilly outside,” can no longer be used! Lace up the sneakers or pump up the tires and get out and enjoy the warmer weather.

Several of you have taken advantage of the revamped Fast Track program as we have seen an increase in interest of the program. If you are still unfamiliar with this program, we encourage you to stop by and inquire with Zena or Wendy. The Fast Track program is a great way of having a fitness program customized just for you. For those of you who love a little healthy competition, consider our “Partner Up” option of the program.

4. Spring Cleaning – Cleaning the house can be much more than just a chore. Cleaning out boxes of clothes, dusting, vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping can be a great cardio and strength workout as well.

Those are just a few options. Find one that works for you and run with it. There are also lots of fitness activities right here in your backyard that may peak your interest as well. Did you know that we have a number of outdoor recreation sports that are not only fun, but keep the body in motion as well? I’m sure we have all heard the adage, “A body in motion stays in

Turning Green on St. Patrick’s Day! By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge

On Sunday, March 11th Daylight Saving Time begins, so don’t forget to set your clocks forward an hour. This month will make one year that I have been a Concierge for Solivita. It’s been very enjoyable and I feel lucky for a wonderful job, family and life. Then again, it’s a lucky month; now all I need is that pot of gold! That leprechaun is just so greedy and won’t let me find it! I might not be able to lead you to a pot of gold, but I can lead you to some awesome activities going on this month.

Florida Strawberry Festival

The festival is an 11-day community event from March 1st11th celebrating the strawberry harvest of Eastern Hillsborough County. Parkesdale Market

If you have not had enough strawberries you can check out Parkesdale, which is a farmer’s market known for their world famous strawberry shortcake. This special treat is only available from January to mid-April and they appreciate it if you call ahead of time at 813-752-0502. The address is 3702 W. Baker Street, Plant City, FL 33563. Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival

An independent panel of three judges selected the 225 artists exhibiting their works. The Festival consistently ranks as one of the top juried fine-art festivals in the country. What the leprechaun does lead you to by the end of St. Patrick’s Day is...beer! After too much of it you end up feeling lucky before you turn green and start to resemble Shrek. Don’t think there is much luck involved in that so just keep that thought in mind while you celebrate!

Spa Talk: Hot or Cold for Injuries?

[ Department] Articles

By Crystal Bethea Owner of Riviera Spa Massage

We all know that treating an injury immediately after it happens can help minimize the pain and damage, as well as facilitate recovery. However, after hurting your back when lifting your grandchild or tweaking your knee when stepping out of your car, what’s best? Should you ice it to try to control inflammation or would heat be better to promote circulation? While it’s difficult to establish a fail-safe rule for when to apply ice or heat, the general directive is to use ice for the first 48 to 72 hours after an acute injury and then switch to heat.

conditions like sciatica that occurs when you drive a car, a back that flares up every time you garden, and tennis elbow from computer work. In these cases, consistent and frequent applications of ice may prove very helpful over long periods of time, particularly immediately after experiencing the event that causes problems. Conversely, back or other muscle spasms caused by overexertion rather than injury may benefit greatly from heat immediately upon the onset of symptoms or immediately after exercise in order to relax the muscles and increase circulation. Also, muscle belly pain not resulting from acute and serious trauma generally responds well to heat, which can break the spasms and release the strain. On the other hand, nerve and tendon pain--regardless of the duration of symptoms, even if you’ve been experiencing them for months--benefit from ice.

What Works for You

The bottom line is that different individuals will vary greatly in their reactions. So, I would suggest you try each option and pay close attention to how your body and mind respond. Then let your gut be your guide. Ultimately, what works best for you is, well, what’s best for you.

It Depends

The reality is that many conditions are not necessarily the result of a specific injury. Some of the most common are chronic

Committee Roundup Wellness Committee

At the last Wellness Committee meeting Jamar Edge shared information on the Fast Track Wellness Program. There have been some changes on the duration, payment, and a new trainer. Residents who are interested in information can contact staff trainers at The Palms or the Riviera Spa & Fitness Center. Some new fitness classes and instructors will be added soon. Check the calendar in Reflections and the class schedule sheets located at the sign-in desk at both facilities. The committee discussed the availability of outdoor recreation courts for non-member residents and guests. Jamar stated that Court 10 at Freedom Park and Court 17 at The Palms are the open play courts for pickleball and Court 1 is the open play court for tennis. Courts can be reserved by calling the Riviera Spa & Fitness Center. Email the Wellness Committee at WellnessCommittee@ SolivitaHOA.com to give your input. RESIDENT ARTIST IN THE NEWS!

Bobbi Mastrangelo, the “Grate Artist,” is internationally known for her unique creations based on the theme of manhole covers. She was recently mentioned in a Canadian news article published by CBC News. The article covered a city cultural heritage planner’s hopes of designating a couple of 150-year-old manhole covers as heritage properties and briefly explored the community of manhole cover enthusiasts. The reporter quoted Bobbi, which helped explain the perspective that these manhole covers are not only important and of great interest to many, but they can contribute to a city’s beauty and identity as well. She shared Bobbi’s website, bobbimastrangelo.com, which features her works of art using replica manhole covers. To read the full story, visit www.cbc.ca/1.4462907.
