Clubs, Let’s Talk Housekeeping….

1. Please provide your Ballroom, Mosaics or Palms custom room setups (2) weeks, or earlier, before your event to Solivita Activities by emailing or dropping off a diagram of the layout. Last minute revisions can be submitted up to Friday for an upcoming weekend event. We avoid dayof room setup revisions as Housekeeping is setting up multiple events or working on other tasks around the entire community.

2. If you agreed to use the same room setup in the Ballroom, Mosaics or Palms, as an event before or after your event, share this information with others in your club so others are aware of this agreement. Many times other club members enter the room before the person who scheduled them and they get upset with our teams.

3. Do not enter the room before your scheduled room setup time to allow Housekeeping enough time to finish setting up.

4. Room Capacity – If you anticipate a certain number of attendees attending your meeting or event (for example 25) and you request a room that accommodates double the occupancy (50-90), we will either reach out or we’ll place you in an appropriately sized room. Don’t forget to view the Satellite Pools Calendar for the Venezia, Bella Viana and Lago Vista Clubhouses. The card groups seen with a “green rotating arrows” are groups that can be cancelled out for club use with 1-2 weeks advance notice.

2024 Polk Senior Games -Pickleball

Sponsored by Solivita Club - Taylor Morrison, Solivita Smashers and the FitWell Department

This will be the 17th year that Solivita has hosted Pickleball in the Polk Senior Games. It takes a “small” army of volunteers (80+) to pull off this three day event with everyone praying the weather holds out and we get all of the games in.

A Little Solivita PSG Pickleball History

The first PSG pickleball event held at Solivita was in 2007 when people were saying “pickleball, what is pickleball?” They had 24 singles, 62 doubles and 38 mixed doubles. The entries continued to rise with 35 singles, 157 doubles and 88 mixed doubles setting a new high in 2012 for a two-day event making it necessary to drop singles in 2013. Florida Seniors Games made pickleball a “qualifying event” in 2015, making this tournament an attractive means to qualify for the state games. Entries grew again with matches ending in the evening hours testing our abilities to complete the games in two days. In 2018 the event went to three days. Last year, we had 256 doubles and 154 mixed doubles matches.

This year’s event at Solivita is March 4th, 5th and 6th starting with Women’s Doubles on Monday, Men’s Doubles on Tuesday and Mixed Doubles on Wednesday. Come on out and root on your fellow Solivita “pickleballers,” bring a chair, enjoy a cool drink from Jeremiah’s Italian Ice and meet some of your neighbors. The committee who puts this event together invites you to watch as the players “dink it out.”

You Need a Disaster Plan

As we approach the warmer weather, now is the time to develop your personal/family disaster plan. The 2024 hurricane season is just around the corner. You need to be prepared.

The first step is putting together a disaster kit by answering the following questions:

» What will I eat and drink if power is cut off and access to groceries is cut off?

» How will I know what is going on?

» What tools and supplies will I need to mitigate damage?

» What kinds of information will I need to recover my property and normal life?

» What supplies should I take with me if I am forced to leave my home?

You will need canned, dry goods or non-perishable food that will last at least three days. Make sure these are foods you will eat. Include with the food a manual can opener. Assume you will not have power. Water is very important. Each person will need a gallon of water per day. Make sure you have at least two weeks of your medications. Depending on the disaster, you may not be able to refill your medications.

Make sure you have a battery-operated weather radio. This allows you to keep up with weather forecasts, road conditions, and disaster relief information. Have fresh batteries on hand for your radio.

An emergency tool kit is also a good idea. Items to include are duct tape, garbage bags, at least 100 feet of rope, tarps, a few hand tools such as a hammer, screwdrivers, and a couple of wrenches. Always include enough flashlights for every family member and plenty of fresh batteries. And a don’t ... Don’t use candles. A live flame can cause serious damage.

Have a first aid kit available. With a first aid kit, have your prescriptions medications.

Also gather all your important papers:

» Copies of insurance papers - house, car, life, and medical coverage information.

» List of contacts for all insurance material, friends, and family members.

» List of doctors and medications.

» Legal documents, bank account information, credit card information, normal bills, and passports.

Put all these copies in a water-tight container. Make sure it is available for quick access. Your phone can store much of this, but the phone battery can run down. Have one or two storage batteries, charged up, available for your phone.

Don’t forget your pets if you have them. Have your pet supplies, medications, and papers available in containers as well.

If you have particular medical supply needs, plan now on how you are going to keep them operating or if you are going to use portable ones. You will need suitable containers for these supplies. Don’t overload a container. You may not be able to lift it. Use smaller containers.

If you decide to leave or need to leave because your home is uninhabitable, take all these items with you. Also take blankets and clothing with you for the weather conditions you are heading to. Tip: Smaller containers are easier to pack in your car.

You can gather all these things if you have prior warning, as with a hurricane. However, what if the disaster is a tornado in the middle of the night? You must be prepared and only you can do that. Start your preparation now. Make a plan and work the plan. Do a little each week. Have a check list and keep it up to date. Hurricane season starts June 1st. It’s not that far away.

Smashers Pickleball Club

Ladders Fun Day Event

The Smashers Ladders team hosted a Fun Day event on a very nice day in January. The event included a potluck with tons of food and treats. This was not your typical pickleball event, as the games were meant to just “have fun” and everyone who participated did just that. Did you ever play “pickleball” corn hole, “dink” into a basket, “pass the pickleball” or “King of the Hill”? Tickets were distributed to those that won the events for prizes. Music was supplied by our own Smasher Burt. The next event to come out and watch is the Polk Senior Games March 4th-6th.

SolAbility

Some may see our logo and think we are a club only for the mobility disabled. However, the wheelchair symbol is widely used universally for disability. Many SolAbility members have disabilities other than mobility. We do our best to offer social activities designed to accommodate all member’s disabilities. If there is someone in our community that has a disability we don’t accommodate in current activities, we will welcome them and work to accommodate them in existing and new ones. If you know someone who might benefit, tell them about SolAbility. Contact us at 489-273-6891 or SolAbility@gmail.com.

Solivita RV Club

The RV Club began 2024 with a pizza party in conjunction with our regularly scheduled January meeting in which Barb Bizon and Susan Ragsdale began their second two-year terms as President and Secretary, respectively. Members are looking forward to two upcoming rallies. Roy Sheppard will be the rally master for the rally at Creekfire RV Resort in Savannah, Georgia April 23rd-26th. Barb Bizon will be the rally master for our annual pre-Christmas rally, returning to Fisherman’s Cove in Palmetto December 4th-7th. We encourage RV owners to check us out at our meetings on the third Wednesday at 4:30pm in RSF2 and at SolivitaRVClub.org.

Solivita Funtime Events Club

The Hand, Knee & Foot Tournament was a fun time for all. Winners will be in the next Reflections. Upcoming events include a chocolate making day in Solivita, more day trips and a lot more fun. Want to join us? Email mlando@aol. com or call 917-622-5414. All proceeds go to help homeless kitties. Thank you to all the residents that help us. In a recent study by Copenhagen City Heart Study, tennis tops the list of sports scientifically proven to increase life expectancy. It followed around 9,000 people over 25 years and found that playing tennis added 9.7 years to their lives. There was a clear correlation between social interaction and longevity. The physical demands and challenges of playing along with balance and mental strategy requirements of the sport, contributed to positive life-enhancing factors. The takeaway? If you haven’t picked up a racquet, it’s not too late! You’ll add years onto your life! We offer that chance. Our clay courts are well suited to senior tennis, so come join the fun.

ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out)

The ROMEOs started 2024 with a wonderful lunch experience at Lola’s Mexican Restaurant (2924 Pleasant Hill Road, next to Pazza Luna). All 23 of us highly rated the food and the service. Everyone was polled about their food, they all said they would be going back with their significant others. ROMEOs is a men’s club and we extend an invitation to new residents who would like to make new friends and enjoy lunches out once a month. Contact Dave Lane at 863427-6939 for more information.

Holistic Horizons (HH)

Did you know withholding forgiveness could have an adverse effect on your health and happiness? This was the question discussed at a recent meeting, when HH member Glenda Beddard presented helpful information about forgiving those who have hurt us. The truth is holding onto anger and negative emotions prevents us from having inner peace in our lives. The process of forgiveness helps us understand that choosing to forgive has nothing to do with anyone else. It doesn’t mean condoning what someone has said or done, it is simply giving ourselves the gift of letting go of hurt and pain.

Crafty Red Hatters

We had our planning meeting in January and will be completing a variety of new crafts this year. The rest of the meeting time was spent hearing about all the exotic trips members have taken or are planning to take. We also caught up on what everyone had been up to for the holidays. It’s going to be a fabulous year! Our first project was a hit. We each chose a cup and saucer and had tons of supplies to decorate. Thank you, Sharon, for collecting everything that was needed. There was a lot of conversation and laughter as we worked, and the results were charming.

QiGong Club of Solivita

Student of the Month: Kriss Monteverd

“I was a physical education teacher and coach for 40 years but never heard of QiGong until I moved to Solivita. Although I play golf and pickleball, I wanted an activity that was not competitive. Qigong is a wonderful combination of gentle stretching, controlled breathing, balance, and meditation. After just a few classes, I found myself using many of the techniques in my daily life. I feel energized when I leave class and have seen an improvement in my flexibility, breathing and mental health. Everyone participates at their own pace. Please join us at QiGong!”

OD Kwon Do Society

Although attendance has dropped off some, we are encouraging to the students who attend class. Learning self-defensive techniques can be fun.
