Reminders & Updates By Sheri Wollschlager Club Manager

In last month’s Reflections I wrote about guest passes. Since we are seeing more and more guests, I want to provide a few reminders and modification to the rules.

Informed Consent Agreement & Waiver Form

Starting May 1st, there will be a new process for purchasing guest passes. Every guest will need to sign an Informed Consent Agreement and Waiver form before they can receive a guest pass. The form is available for viewing or printing in advance on SolivitaHOA.com -> Docs & Info -> Forms. The forms will also be available at Riviera Spa & Fitness Center (RSF) or The Palms where you can purchase guest passes. A resident or adult guest must sign for anyone under the age of 18.

Modification to the Rule about Advance Guest Pass Purchases

Last month I said you would not be able to purchase guest passes in advance, but a resident brought up a good point and therefore we will be modifying this rule. When your guest is present you can purchase the guest pass. For example, if your guest wants to use the facilities on May 3rd but they come in on May 2nd, you can bring them to The Palms or RSF on May 2nd and purchase the passes for May 3rd.

Guest Using Resident’s Home

We’ll also continue the procedure for residents who are giving their guest permission to use their home while they are away. Residents will continue to email Membership, SolivitaMembership@ evergreen-LM.com, granting permission for guests to purchase passes. The guests will need to show identification to verify who they are and sign the waiver before they purchase the guest passes. Please remember to provide your name, Solivita address, all the names of your guests, indicate which guests are adults or minors, the visitation dates, and if the passes will be purchased at The Palms or RSF.

Adult Guest Passes

Adult guest passes can only be used by guests over 18 years of age. Because age is hard to verify by looking at someone, a staff member may ask your guest for proof of age at any time if they have an adult pass and look younger than 18 years of age. Please have your guest carry proof of age with them at all times.

Reflections |  May 2018 |

Minors

A guest under the age of 18 MUST be accompanied by a resident or an adult with a guest pass at all times and are only allowed to use: the recreation complexes at Freedom Park with reservations; all the Satellite pools; and The Palms pool (M-F, 12pm-4pm and all day on Saturday and Sunday). RSF pool is adults only. They are welcome to tour the other Club facilities, but are not allowed to participate in activities in the other facilities (i.e., Billiards, Library or use the computers, unless advertised as an event for all ages). Residents are responsible for their guests.

Sunday Fundays

Our Sunday Fundays at The Palms have been very popular and we are glad everyone is enjoying the events. To facilitate the events better, the Lifestyles Team has a few reminders and suggestions: • No alcoholic beverages are allowed to be brought in. • Inside chairs cannot be brought out of the building and used on the pool deck. • Do not arrive early and save seats. If a resident places towels or items on pool deck chairs to save them they will be asked to remove them. • Due to limited seating, you may want to bring your own folding chair, but do not block access to the showers, doors or other access areas. • Sunday Fundays are large events and alcoholic beverages are served during these events, so it is suggested to take younger and active children to one of our other 13 satellite pools. • Entrance to the event is through the main front doors and not through the pool gates.

Dog Park

I always love taking a break to walk down to the Dog Park to watch our 4-legged residents play. After spending some time down there, I found that I need to provide a few reminders of the park rules: • The gate code for the Dog Park is not to be given out to nonregistered pet owners. • It is the responsibility of the dog owners to pick up their pet’s waste. continued on page 4

May I Tell You…

By Jana Malik Director of Activities

Amazing News About Viewing the Room Calendars Online

Coming soon, residents will be able to view all of the Solivita facility room calendars on SolivitaHOA.com! This will help clubs with their event planning by being able to look for a date in advance, without the assistance of the Lifestyles Activities team. Residents will benefit by seeing club meetings, Mosaics Special Nights events, Lifestyles and Fitness event and class location and times. Private events such as birthdays, anniversaries or weddings will be listed as “Private Event.” Please note that residents will not be able to see any notations about any of the scheduled events, such as who booked the room, their phone number or any other special notations. At this time, the calendar is for viewing purposes only. To make a room reservation, you will still continue to come to the Lifestyles Activities Office or fill out the Resident Event Request Form available on SolivitaHOA.com. This decision was made with assistance from the Solivita Club Presidents when we presented the idea at the Club President Meeting on February 28th. We first had asked all of the Club Presidents their preference and thoughts on which way to list events in the Solivita facility room calendars via an email blast and by a paper survey at the meeting. The question asked was: Should the name of the reserved event/meeting/game be shown or should it be disclosed as “Reserved.” For example, in the Ballroom calendar, you could view the event on May 31st from 5pm-9pm either as “Movie Night” or as “Reserved.” Thank you Club Presidents for all of your thoughts; we appreciate it. Paper Survey Results 67 said to show the name of the reserved event/meeting/game 7 said to show Reserved for all scheduled event/meeting/game SurveyMonkey Online Results 29 said to show the name of the reserved event/meeting/game 8 said to show Reserved for all scheduled event/meeting/game The Lifestyles Activities team will be working on implementing this viewable facility room calendar through SolivitaHOA.com over the summer. We will announce in Reflections when the room calendars will be ready for viewing and we will host a Talk n’ Chill presentation in the Ballroom to unveil this new SolivitaHOA.com feature.

About the Solivita Volunteer Program

Solivita is incredibly fortunate to have 313 multi-talented, incredibly reliable and an extremely helpful group of resident volunteers who offer their time to their community whether they help inside or outside the gate! From March 1, 2017 - February 28, 2018, Solivita volunteers have accrued 9,651 hours within Solivita and 14,652 hours with outside charity organizations! April is National Volunteer Month, but at Solivita we say thanks every year in May with an appreciation event. I can’t give away too many details, but I can tell you that EVERY single volunteer looks forward to the goodies we give and the entertainment that is provided solely by the Solivita team.

assembly/delivery to clerical, setting up a Lifestyles event to teaching, and so much more. • Volunteers log their hours on a provided log sheet and

are asked to turn them in three OR MORE times a year. The hours are tallied and totaled annually from March – February by Lifestyles Activities. *Remember to put your name on the Log Sheet; surprisingly, we receive a handful of log sheets with no names on them. • Volunteering for Solivita Clubs or volunteering with or for a

Solivita Club charity is exempt from the Solivita volunteer program. Volunteers are the MOST IMPORTANT key component to the amazing Solivita Lifestyles program and we COULD NOT do the amazing things that we do without their help! At the last Wellness Committee meeting, Jamar Edge, the Director of Fitness & Wellness, announced the names of the two new fitness trainers. They are Jonathan Jean-Bart and Jordan Brown. They will be available for personal training, assessments, and assisting in the gyms. The indoor pool now has new kick boards, weights, and noodles. There is work being done on a tennis court at The Palms that is not draining properly. The softball field warning track is also being addressed for a safety issue. You may contact us at wellnesscommittee@SolivitaHOA. com with questions, concerns, or suggestions. Members of the committee include Jamar Edge, Susan Sweet (Chair), Russ D’Amato, Dottie Fertig, Joan Kraus, Michael Luddy, Rob Smith, Sheila Smith, and Margo Vento.

SPEED ENFORCEMENT IN SOLIVITA The HOA, Security, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office receive multiple complaints of speeding each week from residents. The Sheriff’s Office has been asked for their assistance in speed enforcement. Receiving a speeding ticket is not only financially costly, but can also lead to much more serious results. Here are some quick facts on speeding: A driver is six times more likely to have an accident when going at 25% above the posted speed limit. Speeding reduces the amount of available time to avoid a crash and increases the severity of a crash once it occurs.

Appreciating America!

By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge

Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of the Mexican victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. In my opinion, the celebration is all about the guacamole and margaritas and I love both dearly. It’s time to bring on this yummy celebration!

Mother’s Day

County Historical Museum located at 100 E Main St., Bartow, FL 33830. This museum is an old court house that’s beautiful. As a resident of Polk County, it’s something you should see and it’s totally free! There is also an area dedicated to war. After the museum there are several stores as well as places to eat, so you can really make a day out of this visit. For more information, call 863-534-4386.

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 13th so it’s time for us to pamper our mothers! Gift certificates and flowers are always great ways to show appreciation to our mothers. You never know how much you can love another person until you have a child. As you watch them grow, you know that you must let them go slowly, which I hate, but I guess it is part of life. My daughter is 10 going on 11 and suddenly she always wants to do stuff with her friends and I am a little jealous because I used to be number one in her life. We need a machine that makes them babies again! That would be the best Mother’s Day present. Come on scientists, mothers are depending on you!

Legendary Sirens Mermaid Show

Since that probably won’t happen, you can always visit the annual Baby Owl Shower. How adorable are baby owls? Those eyes are just too precious for words! Located at Audubon Center for Birds of Prey (1101 Audubon Way, Maitland, Florida 32751), bring the family and join them in celebrating spring Mother’s Day weekend on Saturday, May 12th from 10am-2pm.

Another State Park to check out this month would be White Springs as they are having the Florida Folk Festival on May 25th through the 27th. There will be music, crafts, food, and stories; it’s a terrific way to learn about cultural traditions. Please visit floridastateparks.org/folkfest for more information.

Each spring the Center holds its annual Baby Owl Shower to raise funds to offset the increased costs during baby season. Join them for a day of activities plus special visits with the Center’s Ambassador birds. For more information, call 407-644-0190 or visit fl.audubon.org.

Memorial Day

This year Memorial Day is May 28th. There is always a war going on and we might not know everything. What I do know is that I appreciate the families that have lost loved ones and respect the men and women who have died protecting America. This is a well-deserved federal holiday and it’s an honor for me to show my respect. Thanks to all our brave soldiers for making America safe! Visiting a museum seems like a wonderful thing to do around Memorial Day and we are so lucky to have a nice one - the Polk

From May 26th-28th, see the Legendary Sirens show that includes performers representing decades from the ‘50s to the ‘70s. Showtimes are 12pm and 2pm. You can get an annual pass for Weeki Wachee Springs State Park for $60 a year that includes all their shows and River Boat Cruises. They are open from 9am to 5:30pm all year! They will turn you away if they meet park capacity, but it’s a great State Park. Please call 352-592-5656 or visit weekiwachee.com for more information. The park is located at 6131 Commercial Way, Spring Hill, FL 34606.

White Springs

Megacon

From May 24th-27th, the southeast’s largest comics, sci-fi, horror, anime, and gaming event, Megacon, will attract over 100,000 fans across four days of comic book stars, cosplay, gaming and more. Guests include Jeff Goldblum, Paul Reubens and Jim Lee. Visit the Orange County Convention Center (9800 International Drive, Orlando ) from 4pm-9pm, Thursday; 10am7pm, Friday and Saturday; 10am-5pm, Sunday. Tickets start at $15. Please visit megaconorlando.com for more information. After all those special days to celebrate, we should appreciate how and where we live. Our quality of life is a lot better than in most countries. Let’s not waste a minute of our lives and just live it up! Community Concierge 863-427-7100 sdestefano@evergreen-LM.com

2018 CAR SHOW RECAP

[ Department] Articles

The Solivita Car Show on March 10th reached several new records! This year’s Car Show brought 111 pre-registered and 48 day-of newly registered cars. That’s 20 more cars than last year’s show and, believe it or not, they all fit in the Village Center! Another record broken was the number of spectators in attendance: 3,500 up from 2,500 last year. Thanks to Art’s Golf Cars for sponsoring a six-seater passenger golf cart so we could pick-up spectators throughout the Freedom Park parking lot to the event entrance. The last record broken was the amount of funds raised from car registrations, sponsors, raffles, People’s Choice voting cards, and Car Show t-shirt sales for the Meals on Wheels charity. We were able to raise approximately $8,000 which is $1,400 more than last year’s donation!

Car Show Committee & Meals on Wheels Representatives Front Row (from left to right): Nan Johnston, Carmen Carrasquillo, Jana Malik, Beverly Hougland, Kaylee Febles, and Sheri Wollschlager. Back Row (from left to right): Mike Staed, Gene Burch, Andy Edlund, Brandon Payne, and Mike Motowidlak. Not Pictured: Richard Sones, Ron Alvira, and Janice Casler.

The variety of antique, classic, exotic, truck and muscle cars adorning our beautiful Mediterranean Village Center is what makes our show special. We saw everything from a twin engine Cadillac and classic vehicles from the 1920s to today’s muscle cars. The weather was perfect and the crowds enjoyed all of the many Stonegate Golf food choices, music by DJ JR Goodman, The Rockabilly Girls, raffles and a great variety of vendors. The Solivita RV Club and the SOB Motorcycle Club were a big hit with many visitors checking them out. The end-of-show parade of all the car show participants driving down Village Drive went off with loud cheers given to the award winners who showed off their plaques to the attendees watching.

Solivita Older Bikers

The show could not go on without the help of Food & Beverage, Security, Maintenance, Housekeeping, Club Communications, judges, volunteers, volunteer photographer Joe Thomas, the Car Show Committee, and the entire Lifestyles Activities staff. THANK YOU to everyone who attended! If you would like to see the amazing cars that were there, you may view all of the photos that Joe Thomas took during the day, including the award winners and parade, at SolivitaHOA.com. May Madness

By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn It seems like yesterday we were celebrating the holidays and still cleaning up the effects from Hurricane Irma. We are only one month away from the 2018 hurricane season.

2018 Hurricane Season

The 2018 Atlantic hurricane season is an upcoming event in the annual formation of tropical cyclones in the Northern Hemisphere. The season will officially begin on June 1st and end on November 30th. May has us looking ahead to June and the advent of the summer storm season. In preparation for that, we’re inspecting all palms and trees, particularly those close to homes and buildings. Where limbs and fronds are touching walls and roofs, Floralawn crews are trimming them back. Ensuring that trees and palms are not in contact with building surfaces keeps the possibility of damage to a minimum.

Weeding, Pruning & Planting

Early spring saw us digging into weed control protocols and completing scheduled fertilizer applications. We tackled the annual crape myrtle pruning, getting thousands of crape myrtle trees across Solivita pruned and ready for the new year’s growth. We finished up the native grass pruning and rejuvenational pruning conducted on sparse and leggy plants.

A Complete Team

April also brought the acquisition of new employees, bringing us to a complete team of seven maintenance crews and seven detail crews. Being fully staffed with carefully vetted and thoroughly

trained grounds people empowers us as a company to give Solivita the best care possible. Does it seem like you’re seeing us around more these days? It’s because last month we moved to weekly mowing of your lawns and the turf around ponds.

On the Look Out - The Southern Chinch Bug

The southern chinch bug is the most important insect pest of St. Augustine grass in Florida, but may also feed on other turfgrasses and weeds. Adults are about 3/16 inch long and are black with white patches on the wings. The young (nymphs) range from 1/16 inch long to nearly adult size. Small nymphs are reddish-orange with a white band across the back, but older nymphs and adults have black bodies. They live in the thatch and suck fluids from the crowns, stems and stolons with their needle-like mouthparts. Infested grass turns yellow, then a burnt-reddish color, and dies. Chinch bugs tend to feed in groups, so dead patches of grass appear and seem to get larger as the insects spread through the grass. Severe damage tends to occur from March through November in southern Florida and from April through October in northern Florida. Floralawn and the agronly team are on the move inspecting and treating active sites throughout Solivita. If you think that you may have chinch bugs, please don’t hesitate to contact our office to have the site inspected. That brings you up to date on our activities as we work every day to keep Solivita beautiful! Our next Coffee Talk is May 18th at 9am in the Gator Room. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact our office at 863-225-9565.

Spa Talk: How Acupuncture & Herbs Benefit You By Crystal Bethea

Owner of Riviera Spa Massage Acupuncture is an effective form of health care that has evolved into a complete and holistic medical system. This medical system has been used to diagnose and help millions of people get well and stay healthy. Initially, our acupuncturist, Dr. Anthony Felix, examines the client’s full medical history and check pulse and tongue to determine where the Qi has become blocked or imbalanced. He will then ask questions regarding the client’s health and lifestyle. Acupuncture treatment will follow after the exam by placing fine, sterile needles (the size of a cat’s whisker) on specific acupoints on the body. This activates the body’s Qi and promotes natural healing by enhancing recuperative power, immunity, and physical and emotional health. It is a safe, painless and an effective way to treat a wide variety of medical problems.

Why Recommend Herbs?

Dr. Felix is a certified Herbalist and he understands how herbs can be a powerful adjunct to acupuncture care. They are used to stretch, build and support the body, or to clear it of excess problems like a cold, fever or acute pain. Below are some of the health concerns that acupuncture can help with: • • • • • • • • • • • • •
