Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child By Sheri Wollschlager Club Manager
The Evergreen Team is getting in the holiday spirit early this year by sponsoring a Christmas gift giving to children in poverty. Our goal is to fill over 400 shoeboxes for children ages 2-14 years old that otherwise would not experience the joy of gifts during the holiday season. We need to start early because the boxes need to be shipped. Several of these supplies can be purchased at our local dollar stores. Feel free to pick up one box or several.
How to Participate in Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child:
1. Pick up a shoebox from the Lifestyles Activities office, the Riviera Spa & Fitness Center, or The Palms. 2. Select a boy or girl and an age range on the “How to Pack a Shoebox” informational packet included with your box. 3. Fill the box! Additional gift suggestions can be found at www. samaritanspurse.org/operationchristmas-child/what-goes-in-myshoebox-suggestions. 4. Include a “WOW” item such as a stuffed animal, doll, small musical instrument, small game, etc., as well as some of the
following items: age specific personal care or general hygiene products; age specific school supplies; clothing and accessories; crafts and activities; and a personal note. Do not include: candy; toothpaste; used or damaged items; war-related toys; food or chocolate; seeds; fruit or fruit rolls; snacks; drink mixes; liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items, such as snow globes; or aerosol cans. 5. If desired, include a donation to cover the cost of shipping. 6. Drop-off your shoebox in the Lifestyles Activities office, the Riviera Spa & Fitness Center, or The Palms by Friday, November 9th. On behalf of Evergreen, we thank you for any support you can give. With your help, we will show how wonderful Solivita is by providing a small heartfelt Christmas gift which will bring a smile and love to over 400 children. And The Winners Are… By Jana Malik Director of Activities
I entered the Fall Festival YouTube video in the Florida Festival and Events Association Awards competition and was invited to attend the Awards Ceremony in late August in Bonita Springs because it won 3rd Place! The competition included submissions from festivals, events and fairs held by many large municipalities (mostly in the southeast region). It made me very proud of the Solivita community, to represent Evergreen Lifestyles Management and it especially reminded me how much I love what I do every day. Additionally, we have resident winners from summer Lifestyles Activities events that we’d like to brag about too.
2018 Golf Cart Rally Winners
Rally Routes Created by Jennifer Rodriguez and Kaylee Febles, Solivita Lifestyles Activities Sixty-three teams raced to the finish line in this year’s Golf Cart Rally on Saturday, August 18th. We would like to thank the 18 volunteers that helped to make this event a fun success! The 212 participants had a blast solving and unscrambling the secret hieroglyphics message, dressing up as a clown, taking their Solivita Golf Cart Driver’s License test and hunting for clues around the community. After scoring every single sheet, the winners are….

Resident 2 Resident Resource Center & More By Carolyn Roe Communications Coordinator
The Resident 2 Resident Resource Center (R2R) has been stirring up a lot of chatter around Solivita since its inception two years ago. People have seen wheelchairs, walkers, canes, etc. going in and out the Bistro doors, but from where? From upstairs, between Jana and Sheri’s offices, you’ll find R2R serving as the “loaner agency” for CERT equipment. In addition to CERT, R2R is the place to go when you want to get information about purchasing an AED; when you are looking for golf cart repair, a handyman, hair salons and much, much more. R2R offers workshops on varying topics including decluttering your home, using your Android or iPhone, organizing the financial elements of your life, things to get in order before you find yourself as a single person, and more. Those Solivita R2R volunteers pictured here are ready to answer your questions and guide you in the right direction to make your life in Solivita a little less stressful. R2R is happy about finding a new program where doctors make house calls! This program provides in-home-services to individuals who are homebound and would benefit from health services coming to them. It might be where hospice services are needed. It might be too difficult for the individual to get to a doctor, so the doctor comes to them. An in-home assessment is done by a qualified individual which puts the needed services in motion.
R2R assists residents when they come into the office having recently lost a spouse or significant other by first listening, and then putting them in touch with support services. We are fortunate to have volunteers who have varied backgrounds, many in social services. In addition to person-to-person contact they have the form for placing memorials and celebration of Life information on SolivitaHOA.com, Classifieds & Resident Happenings as a means of keeping other residents with up-to-date news. R2R also helps out with the newly rolled out Poinciana Area Events Calendar housed on SolivitaHOA.com under Calendars & Maps. This calendar identifies events that happen outside of Solivita. The form for submitting events is located in R2R as well as on the website. We rely on residents to pass that information on to the Communications office. The R2R Resource Center is much more than wheelchair storage. There’s a lot going on and a lot of information to share. Please stop by and say hello to the dedicated R2R volunteers.

Just Fall into October!
By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge It’s fall and there is just so much to do in October. It doesn’t matter whether you’re into décor, cooking, drinking or enjoying family time. Get creative with fall décor by making a wreath or a cornucopia. You could also cook or bake a scary looking treat, but make sure it’s scrumptious! Do not fall into raking leaves or meeting up with goblins and you’ll be sure to have a great month. October has many important days and events, including Breast Cancer Awareness. It seems that we all know someone who has been touched by this horrible disease. We must acknowledge the importance of the fight to eliminate cancer altogether. World Smile Day is October 5th. I don’t really need a reason to smile but I’ll take it anyway! October 8th is Columbus Day, which is a public holiday in the United States that commemorates the voyage of Christopher Columbus to the Americas in 1492. Another special day this month is National Boss Day on October 16th. Do you have a great boss? If you do, this is the day to show some appreciation!

Please do not bring needles or unused medications as those are not accepted. Feeling Like Fall!
By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn To those of us from up north, October in Florida doesn’t yet feel like the autumns we’re used to, but it IS starting to get cooler! Solivita landscape crews are always happy to have summer’s heat taper off and give way to more comfortable temperatures.
Mowing Schedule Change
As we head into October, turf growth is slowing down. On November 1st, we’ll move into our bi-weekly mowing schedule. Look for your mowing crews every two weeks instead of weekly.
Seasonal Chores
Just because the grass is growing more slowly doesn’t mean we’ll be taking it easy. This is the time of year when we focus on fallspecific landscaping chores as well as other tasks that need doing. This includes the fourth round of granular fertilizer and herbicide applications and finishing up the third plant replacement list. We are also starting native grass pruning in Solivita. Fakahatchee is the grass that grows in large mounds in the center median on Solivita Boulevard and in the common areas. At this time of year, we cut those mounds back. If you have Fakahatchee grass on your property, our crews will be pruning those clumps back also. You may notice more frequent running of the irrigation

system throughout Solivita now. Predictable summer rains are completely past so now we depend on sprinklers to deliver the water that the turf and plants need.
Watching for Brown Patch
Summer turf diseases have tapered off and now we look for turf issues that arrive with cooler weather. The biggest challenge is brown patch fungus disease. Brown patch fungus tends to affect turf that stays moist for prolonged periods of time. The prolonged moisture comes with cool nights, overcast days, and mornings with late, heavy fog. The fungal disease attacks the base of the grass leaf. The tissue looks soft and rotted; blades can be pulled out easily. Brown patch disease first shows up as yellowing of the grass which then turns to brown and spreads in large circles. Brown patch affects St. Augustine grass (which grows throughout Solivita) as well as Bermuda, Bahia, Centipede and other turf grasses. We work hard to prevent it with applications of fungicides and controlled irrigation.

Do You Know How to Purify Water? Submitted by the Solivita CERT Team
Though it occurs rarely, a “boil water” notice may be issued by the local water agency or other officials. Do you know how to treat potentially compromised tap water? You will need to do so for: »» Drinking »» Food Preparation (including food washing) »» Washing Dishes »» Brushing Your Teeth »» Making Ice You can also do this if you run out of bottled water that you may have had on hand. Regardless of the method you choose from below, let tap water sit for a while so any particles settle out. Alternatively strain through a coffee filter.
There are Basically Three Ways:
1. Boiling is the Safest Method. In a large pot bring water to a roiling boil for one minute, then let it cool down. To replace
the oxygen that has been displaced during boiling and make the water taste better, pour it back and forth between two containers several times. Boiling removes most microbes. 2. Chlorination. Using a regular household bleach (5-6% sodium hypochlorite), add 16 drops (1/8 teaspoon) to a gallon of water. Stir and let stand 15 minutes. BE SURE TO USE ONLY PLAIN BLEACH—not scented or color-safe or with any other cleaners added. The resulting water should have a slight chlorine smell. If it doesn’t, treat it again. This removes most microbes. 3. Distillation. Only this method can remove salts, heavy metals and other chemicals. It is also the best for removing microbes. Naturally it is the most difficult. Fill a pot about half full with water. Hang a cup to the inside of the pot lid (suspended with string/ties), not touching the water. Boil water for 20 minutes. The condensed steam captured in the cup is distilled. Use this condensate from the cup. Continue to purify your water until notified by authorities (likely Toho Water Authority). This recommendation is from your Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and is based on FEMA recommendations. For more information on CERT, see our club webpage in the list of Solivita clubs on SolivitaHOA.com and navigate to the documents at the bottom. Our monthly meetings are open to all residents and can be found in the Calendar in Reflections.

Spa Talk: Balance Through Life

Find the Likability in Exercise
You may be busier now than when you were working with so many activities and different social club responsibilities to uphold. Some are even still working and battle the longer commute with more demands than ever before. When the days end we have almost no energy left for self-care and the other things we enjoy. Let’s find a healthy balance. There are plenty of studies showing the benefits to exercise and better yet, to living in an active community like this one. So why aren’t there more people moving towards a healthier well-being? We need to reexamine our notion of what exercise and movement are and consider what we’re moving towards or away from. The question is not just are we fit physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well. Do we enjoy how we’re moving through life? We can integrate more healing movements into our days that will affect our longevity.
exhaust or limit your energy, but expands it. Take advantage of your facilities and activities for self-care and bring some friends along on your journey. Through exercise, meditation/prayer, therapeutic flushing through massage and natural remedies, we can all stay well together. Let’s re-orientate our point of view by redefining exercise as medicine or movement. Already opportunity arises and takes on a more healing expression versus seeing more barriers thanks to the many options available for exercise.
Emotional Fitness
Not only do we want to focus on the physical, but to move toward including emotional and spiritual fitness as well. There are tons of studies linking this as a matter to explore and I would advise you to do some research for self-growth. There is evidence that the largest number of heart attacks occur on Monday morning between 8am and 9am. This occurrence relates to the experience called joyless striving. The feeling of having to force yourself to do things you have no interest in or truly dislike. This clearly suggests a lack of emotional fitness. When we are emotionally connected in a healthier way to the things around us and one another, we not only survive, we thrive!

Lifestyle changes are necessary in order to survive. Not only do we need to take care of ourselves, but also care enough about the lives of others. Individuals with supportive relationships get sick less, heal faster and live longer. It’s all about finding the balance making conscious actions and learning to move in ways that don’t

SPEED ENFORCEMENT IN SOLIVITA The HOA, Security, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office receive multiple complaints of speeding each week from residents. The Sheriff’s Office has been asked for their assistance in speed enforcement. Receiving a speeding ticket is not only financially costly, but can lead to much more serious results. Here are Some Quick Facts on Speeding: A driver is six times more likely to have an accident when traveling at 25% above the posted speed limit. Speeding reduces the amount of available time to avoid a crash and increases the severity of a crash once it occurs. Speed is a choice over which the driver has complete control.
