Back To School, Solivita Style
[ Department] Articles
By Jana Malik Director of Activities
When I think of September, I think of Labor Day, football, Magical Dining (my personal favorite) and Back to School. I usually don’t think of school at Solivita, but then I realized that in a way, we do with Solivita University (SU). I’d like to take a moment to share with everyone how Solivita University started and what it has become since its inception in January 2016. The Brain Child of resident Jacquie Brunner and her late husband Paul, who after attending a lecture sponsored by Stetson University, were determined to bring life-long learning to Solivita. Another resident, Kathy Glascott, volunteered to help Jacquie fulfill this Jacquie Brunner dream. As a team they began working with Stetson University, Lifestyles Activities and the Solivita Book Circle to make Life-Long Learning available conveniently in our community. However, when Stetson University was forced to end their partnership with us, Jacquie and Kathy decided that there was enough talent, support and interest Kathy Glascott to continue making a wide range of courses available to all residents. With the enthusiastic collaboration of the Lifestyles Activities staff, Solivita University was up and running. We have offered fun and interesting courses in Languages, Art, Literature, Philosophy, Sociology, Theatre, Technology, Computers, History, and Writing with so much more to come. And starting in January 2019, Great Decisions Foreign Policy Discussion Group will move under the SU umbrella. Not only can you exercise, play pickleball or cards, dance the night away, see a free movie, learn to sculpt or paint, golf and dine out—you can also exercise your mind and acquire new knowledge through Solivita University. Not every active adult community has such a program readily available, but lucky for Solivita residents, we do! Some of the perks about SU include low tuition, qualified instructors (many are residents)—and, there are no tests,

books to buy (with exception to Great Decisions), or homework assignments! Come join your neighbors and friends and take a course or two from the many that are offered every season. The list can be found in every issue of Reflections and the tuition for most three-week courses is only $20.
A Talk n’ Chill presentation on all aspects of SU, Great Decisions Discussion Group and some new smart technology (cell phone and tablet) courses coming will be held on Tuesday, October 2nd at 1pm in the Ballroom. Join us for information, refreshments, door prizes for SU gift cards and register for October 2018 courses. Important Notices for All on the Day of the Solivita Pub Crawl on Friday, September 14th: • The Marketplace Bistro will close at 4pm.
• Village Drive will close for this event only from the Ballroom
to the Pro Shop roundabout from 5pm-11pm. • All rooms in the Waterfront Galleries and the Mediterranean Skyline Rooms will be closed at 5pm. • The Riviera Spa & Fitness Center will be open during normal hours.

Or will the club give money directly to the charity? • Up to six (6) Solivita Clubs will be randomly picked in a raffle and all proceeds will be divided equally. • A club that was chosen last year is not eligible for this year’s drawing. However, the club will be eligible next year. • The deadline for submitting the application to the Lifestyles Activities Office is September 28, 2018. • If your club is chosen, Solivita Lifestyles will need one of the following by November 1st: Solivita Club W-9 listing their EIN #, the Charity’s W-9 listing their EIN # OR the Charity’s 501-C3 form. Save the date, October 9th for the next workshop on Car Maintenance! The R2R Resource Center strives to build a healthier and stronger Solivita community by providing practical information and support through resident to resident contacts, workshops, service providers and volunteers. The information given is for informational purposes only. It is neither a recommendation nor an endorsement. Solivita R2R cannot be held liable.
The HOA, Security, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office receive multiple complaints of speeding each week from residents. The Sheriff’s Office has been asked for their assistance in speed enforcement. Receiving a speeding ticket is not only financially costly, but can lead to much more serious results. Here are Some Quick Facts on Speeding: A driver is six times more likely to have an accident when traveling at 25% above the posted speed limit. Speeding reduces the amount of available time to avoid a crash and increases the severity of a crash once it occurs. Speed is a choice over which the driver has complete control.

Checklist for When a Hurricane is Approaching Submitted by the Solivita CERT Team
One of your Community Emergency Response Team’s (CERT) objectives is to help residents prepare for disasters. Hurricane Season officially began on June 1st. We are in the middle, more active, part of it. So keep abreast of the weather. (Are batteries in your weather radio?) If the weather reports indicate a hurricane is likely to hit our area, you should plan to do the following as promptly as possible: • Top off the tank in your car so you won’t run short of gas. • Get a few hundred dollars cash in case credit cards can’t be used due to power outage or local banks are not open. • Police your yard and bring inside all decorative items and planters that can become missiles in 100+ mph winds. This includes patio furniture (or tie it to a post on your lanai). Your neighbors will appreciate it. • Put up your hurricane protection (shutters, plywood, etc). You must also plan to take these back down after the storm passes. Check with administration for additional guidelines. Don’t wait until winds build up. • Pull out your disaster supply kit and see that all items are in good order (flashlights, corded phone, trash bags, duct tape, extra non-expired batteries) • Top off your emergency food supplies—and make sure

you have enough for at least three days (which goes for your pet as well). Do you have a manual can opener? Stock up on water (1 gallon per day, per person just for drinking). Buy jugs/bottles, fill your own jugs/bottles, and fill a bathtub for flushing toilets with a bucket and washing up. Tap water may become unusable—stay informed. Make extra ice and ice cubes. Also, turn your refrigerator temperature lower to keep it cool longer in case the power goes out. Help your neighbors and friends do these things too! Inform an out-of-the-area relative or friend of your plans or status who can inform far-flung friends and family on your behalf, so you don’t have to make or answer all the calls. You should set this person up ahead of time.
For more recommendations see CERT’s Hurricane Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), Supplies List and Planning Considerations available on SolivitaHOA.com as a document under the Club webpage for CERT or at the Concierge Desk. For more information on CERT, come to a meeting on the first Monday each month (see the Reflections Calendar insert).

I can only contribute this to the loving and caring way with which the existing residents welcome the newcomers into the fold. Roots always start off small and grow so deep, thick, and strong. This is what comes to my mind when I think of this community. How we interact and communicate with new people can determine what kind of roots we can send down. When we plant good seeds in fertile soil we see strong and beautiful trees emerge. So, it is with the Solivita community that we have one very beautiful tree with so many branches. However, the upcoming events in Florida are nothing like roots and won’t ground you, so get out there and enjoy!
Labor Day
This holiday is celebrated at separate times of the year in different countries. Most countries celebrate it on May 1st, but Australia, Canada, Bahamas and a few others vary. We here in the U.S. do so on the first Monday in September, which is the 3rd this year. Whatever the date, workers worldwide appreciate that special day set aside for them. Hopefully we can all reflect on those workers back in the days when there were no laws to protect them. Thankfully we have come a long way since then.
Epcot International Food and Wine Festival
From now until November 12th, visit Epcot (located at 200 Epcot Center Drive, Orlando, FL 32821) for their annual Food and Wine Festival. The festival is included with your regular entrance fee, however food and drinks range in price. Sometimes Disney offers discounts for Florida residents, but you can find out by calling 407-939-5277. Please visit disneyworld.com/foodandwine for more information.
The Water Lantern Festival
Visit this festival on September 15th, from 5pm-10pm, at the Orlando Watersports Complex (located at 8615 Florida Rock Road, Orlando, FL 32824). This family event will have music

and food trucks, so you can enter hungry and leave full. Water lanterns are beautiful to watch and are lit to express one’s personal emotions, happy or sad. If you think you would enjoy lighting one for any reason, or maybe you’re like me and have had the desire to light a water lantern ever since watching Tangled, you may want to consider this event. Just so we have a clear conscience, the ticket price also includes a cleanup fee. Tickets are $45 at the door or you may purchase them by visiting www.waterlanternfestival.com.
National Public Lands Day
September 22nd is one of the days that you may enter most U.S. National Parks for free. Visit www.nps.gov for more information. The parks participating in Florida are listed below: • Canaveral National Seashore • Castillo de San Marcos National Monument • Dry Tortugas National Park • Everglades National Park • Gulf Islands National Seashore
I Love a Piano
This glorious musical, which runs September 21st to October 14th, looks at America through the perceptive and hopeful eyes of the legendary Irving Berlin! It follows the journey of a piano from its first days in Tin Pan Alley to the 1950’s. The story comes to life with over 60 of Berlin’s most beloved songs including Blue Skies, There’s No Business Like Show Business, Cheek To Cheek and God Bless America. There will also be previews of I Love a Piano on September 20th at 7:30pm and September 21st at 2pm at the Winter Park Playhouse (located at 711 Orange Avenue, Suite C, Winter Park, FL 32789). Music and lyrics by Irving Berlin. Conceived by Ray Roderick and Michael Berkeley. For more information, call 407-645-0145 or visit www.winterparkplayhouse.org. The strongest roots grow deep into the ground and will keep a tree standing straight for years to come. I don’t know how I manage to find time to watch how roots grow but somehow, I do and it’s a beautiful thing to see. As residents return home, Solivita becomes a massive tree with the strongest roots and I hope that never changes in this community. Community Concierge 863-427-7100 sdestefano@evergreen-LM.com

Welcome, Fall!
By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn The advent of fall later this month signifies that we at Floralawn have completed our second summer as Solivita’s landscape and lawncare provider. We continue to enjoy working in this beautiful community, keeping turf, plants, and trees healthy, maintained, and vibrant. We have experienced a record rainfall this year, which presented us with certain challenges. St. Augustine grass, which grows throughout Solivita, does not thrive when it gets too much water. In fact, excess water makes the grass vulnerable to fungus, diseases, pest activity, and root rot. Once root rot has occurred, it’s very difficult to restore St. Augustine to a thick and healthy condition. We’ve had to closely monitor turf throughout the community for signs of deterioration due to excess water. Certain plants also lose their vitality when overwatered. Their leaves turn yellow and they become thin, leggy, and vulnerable to disease and pests. We’ve also had to keep a close eye on shrubs and landscaping plants. It has been a year of monitoring rainfall, adjusting irrigation schedules, and checking for disease, increased pest activity, and turf root rot.

If you’ve lived in Florida for at least a year, you’ll know that “love

bug season” occurs in May and September. We have come to that time of year again when these small flying paired visitors fill the air and stick to our windshields like they’ve been glued on. Love bugs migrated to North America from Central America in the 1900’s. Contrary to rumor, they were not bio-engineered in a University of Florida lab and unintentionally let loose to take over the entire southeast United States. Philip Koehler, a UF entymologist, says they would have been orange and blue had UF engineered them! Our record rainfall this year unfortunately means that we may experience a large population of love-bugs this month. Heavy rains, especially during the summer, create a hospitable environment for eggs to incubate and hatch. Here’s a life hack for you: to remove love-bugs from your windshield, scrub them with a wet dryer sheet. It works better than glass cleaner and paper towels. My next Coffee Talk is coming up in October in the Starlite Ballroom. Bring your questions and concerns! You are also welcome to call us at 863-225-9569 anytime or to stop by our office in the Admin building for a chat. Have a great month!
