ast month was the moment we’ve all been waiting for; the grand opening of Vitalia’s new amenity center, Captiva Club! A traditional ribbon cutting ceremony was followed by an open house with decadent desserts and tasty treats. Guests included local community officials as well as the AV Homes team, including myself plus the most important attendees, you the residents! Eager to introduce themselves, members of your very own Captiva Club made their long-awaited debut! At the forefront of this stateof-the-art amenity center, Captiva Club members were dispersed throughout the facility, acting as tour guides, discussing every wonderful room and facility. It was great to see all the vibrant faces that make up Vitalia take the first glance at their much-anticipated amenity center. As the first community event following the grand opening, this year’s 4th of July bash will surely be one for the books and one not to miss! The details are very hush-hush, which

Welcome to the Captiva Club!
Jannell McDonald Community Manager 321-332-1871 jmcdonald@aamfl.com
It has been a long road to get this building opened! There have been many inquiries about the daily operations at the facility. Captiva Club must have staff present while it is open for liability reasons. The hours of operation are Monday – Saturday 6am-10pm and Sunday 8am-8pm. For the Lifestyles Events that are scheduled to go past the closing time of the building, the staff will be scheduled to stay through the end of the event. If you are planning a club or group event and would like to schedule the event after the scheduled building hours, there will be a fee of $50 per hour to extend the time of the event. The board has decided the pool at Captiva Club (Sunset Beach Pool) and the old Clubhouse pool will have specific hours for children to use those pools for when your grandchildren come to visit. The schedule for children to use the pools is 1pm-5pm daily. This should accommodate the usage of the pools for classes without interruption by children. If you were previously scheduled to play cards, have a club meeting, or event in the old Clubhouse or the Guardhouse, please look very closely at the Calendar this month! We have placed your events in the available rooms. The room names and their abbreviations are on the Calendar. The staff at the front desk can help you find where your event or meeting is taking place when you arrive. To schedule events, you must fill out a resident Event Request Form. This form can be found at the front desk. An event reservation will not be approved without a form for each event, unless it is a monthly meeting scheduled through a club. This is the only time that a reoccurring event can be scheduled. If you find that your event or meeting is missing from the Calendar, please see Jennifer in the Lifestyles Office or the Lifestyles staff at the front desk. They will help you get it scheduled.
4 Vitalia Voice | July 2014
It is very important that all of the clubs and groups submit something for the Vitalia Voice. It does not need to be an article, but if you want information about meetings and events on the calendar, we need the information every month to make sure that it is not missed. For those of you who are planning card games, bunco games, and meetings, you must get with staff to schedule the rooms that are available for your activities! As we grow and add clubs, room availability will be more difficult to find! The only way to be sure that you will have a place to play is to reserve the rooms. By popular demand, we have added an additional service! We have contracted personal trainers for the gym area. The trainers will help orientate you to the new technogym equipment. If you are interested in a more one on one approach they have set up a fee schedule for personal training appointments and fitness assessments. They will also be planning a few challenges and activities for the entire community! Please stop by the desk in the fitness area and meet them! The Captiva Club has brought many changes to our program here at Vitalia. There will be so many more additions to your current schedule, classes, and activities. Please let the Lifestyles staff or the Social Committee members know if there is a class that you may want to see offered or an idea for any activity. NOTICE: On June 5th, 2014 members of the Board of Directors approved the revised budget for July 2014 through December 2015 at a budget revision meeting held at Tradition Town Hall. The new fee for dues is $216.22 beginning July 2014. This increase was put into effect to offset the operating expenses of the new Captiva Club Amenity Center that will also open July 1st.

Vitalia Registered Clubs
Jennifer Rodriguez
I wanted to start out by thanking all of the residents for welcoming me into the Vitalia family since the first day I started. It has been a month now and I’m looking forward to our very first event in the new amenity center - the 4th of July Pool Party. On another note, with the opening of the NEW Captiva Club and new staff starting, residents have asked me a variety of questions. In this article I will be discussing forming a club or what a club actually is.
club. All members of the clubs must be Vitalia residents. A minimum of TEN ACTIVE members is required to form the club.
•
All clubs must be open to all residents to become a member. Clubs are permitted to limit the number of residents due to limited space, however the Lifestyles Director must approve this.
DEFINITION OF A CLUB An organization composed of people who voluntarily meet on a regular basis for a mutual purpose or hobby such as social, literary, or political purposes, also including recreational sports. Voluntary clubs are not partnerships, since the members do not join them for profit-making purposes. Vitalia clubs are considered non-profit organizations, which are groups organized for purposes other than generating profit and in which no part of the organization's income is distributed to its members, directors, or officers.
•
All residents interested in forming a club must fill out the appropriate paperwork, along with a copy of the organization’s constitution or by-laws. Forms are available to pick up at the front desk from a Lifestyles staff member.
•
Each club president will receive a packet of the club’s rules and regulations and must sign when received, once the club has been approved. It is the club’s responsibility to pass that information onto the next president.
GUIDELINES AND RULES FOR GROUPS TO BECOME REGISTERED CLUBS • Any group desiring to use the Vitalia club facilities for meetings or other purposes must apply to become a registered Vitalia

Book Club Tuesday, July 8th | 9:30am Augustine Room
Please join us. We'll be discussing the book, The Secrets of Mary Bowser by Lois Leveen. The synopsis is below. Mary Bowser was a real person, a freed slave who spied for the Union during the Civil War. She was highly educated, but played the "ignorant darky," posing as a slave in the home of Confederate president Jefferson Davis. Letting the white people believe she was illiterate allowed her access to the war correspondence on Davis's desk. She had a photographic memory, so she would memorize the information, then convert it to code to be sent north to the Union leaders. July 2014 | Vitalia Voice 11
out & about Club / Group The first half of the book covers Mary's life before the Civil War, first as a slave in Richmond, Virginia, then as a free person in Philadelphia, where she was sent at age 12 for her education. When the war began, she chose to return to Richmond, risking everything to serve the cause of freedom. The second half covers that Civil War period. Mary Bowser was incredibly brave for one so young, working with the Underground Railroad as a teen and then as a spy in her early twenties
