community news
Weeds & Wild Grasses Hello from your Community Manager! Native Green, who provides the chemical and fertilizer treatments in the community, put the information below together to help explain what weeds and wild grasses are and how to identify them. I hope this is helpful. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
Michael Fleshman LCAM, CMCA, AMS Community Manager mfleshman@ evergreen-LM.com 772-800-2506
Weeds - Undesirable plants that compete with other plants for sun, water, space and nutrients. Weeds usually invade turf areas when the turf grass has thinned from some sort of stress and has exposed the soil and seedling to sunlight. Weeds are very competitive plants and will out compete many turf grass species if left alone. Typical causes of dead or thin turf include problems with: irrigation, mowing (usually too low), excessive foot/cart traffic, lack of fertilization, inadequate control of insects, nematodes and diseases. Any stress that can cause thinning of the turf. The first step to controlling weeds is to determine why the weeds are there and if any maintenance factors can be changed to improve turf quality and create a less favorable environment for the weed seeds to germinate. Heavily shaded areas receiving too much water promote weeds such as dollar weed, torpedo grass, and sedge grass. Very dry areas promote spurge weed or heavily traveled areas get compacted and promote Goose grass. Weeds are not controlled by chemicals alone. Herbicides are part of weed management, but is NO SUBSTITUTE or REPLACEMENT for good lawn management practices!
Identify the Weed The next step is to properly identify the weed. Weeds are grouped into three categories: Broadleaf Weeds – These are dicotyledonous (having two seed leaves) and have a main vein in the center of the leaf with smaller veins that branch out from that. They generally have tap roots. Examples are dollar weed, chick weed,
beggar weed, wedelia, garden spurge, creeping dayflower, and match weed, just to name a few. Grass Weeds – Closely resemble the desirable grass, which makes them difficult to selectively control without causing damage to the desirable grass. Their leaves are typically long with parallel veins and have round, hollow stems and nodes. Examples are Bermuda grass, torpedo grass, carpet grass, crab grass, goose grass, tropical signal grass, etc. Sedges – Have solid, triangular stems and dark shiny leaves. It flowers from a stalk that originates from the center of the plant. Examples are green kylinga, yellow nutsedge, globe sedge, purple nutsedge, etc.
Life Cycle We also need to understand their life cycle in order to know when the best time is to apply a herbicide to give you the best control. They are classified as: Annual – The seed germinates, the plant grows and produces a seed, and then dies in one growing season. They can be winter or summer annuals. Examples are crabgrass, goose grass, spreading dayflower, chickweed, henbit, Carolina geranium, etc. Biennial – A weed that completes its life cycle in two growing seasons. The first year the plant grows leaves and roots and the second year begins to reproduce before it completes its life cycle. Examples are cud weed and thistles. Perennial – Requires three or more years to complete their life cycle. This group is especially difficult to control because many have specialized stems and roots such as rhizomes, stolons or bulbs, where energy is stored. Creeping perennials use rhizomes and modified stems that grow below the soil surface to creep along and reproduce. Examples are sedge grasses, bermudagrass, carpet and crabgrass, torpedo grass, dollar weed, Florida Betony, etc. August 2019 | Vitalia Voice 3

Book Club Chapters
More Than a Book Club Thursday, August 22nd | 10am | Biscayne Room
The book for this month is Dragon House by John Shors. Iris and Noah who, as a way of healing their painful pasts, open a center to house and educate Vietnamese street children. In the slums of a Vietnamese city they befriend children who dream of nothing more than of going to school, having a home, and being loved. Learning from the poorest of the poor, the most silent of the unheard, they find themselves reborn. The book for September 26th is Daughter of Molokai by Alan Brennert. Contact Janet Taylor at jct6619@gmail.com.
Vitalia Book Club Tuesday, August 13th | 9:30am | Augustine Room
This month we’ll be discussing Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant--and that her lover is married--she refuses to be bought. Instead, she accepts an offer of marriage from a gentle, sickly minister passing through on his way to Japan. But her decision to abandon her home, and to reject her son’s powerful father, sets off a dramatic saga that will echo down through the generations. Upcoming Books: September 10th - Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid and October 8th - The Ninth Hour by Alice McDermott.
