Imported Fire Ant Management
Tyler Heel Community Manager theel@ evergreen-LM.com 877-221-6919
The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, is native to Brazil and was accidentally introduced to the U.S. at the port in Mobile, AL in the 1930s, from infested soil used as ballast in cargo ships. Fire ant populations have spread rapidly in the absence of natural enemies. In fact, fire ant density is reported to be five to ten times the density in their native Brazil, where natural enemies keep fire ant populations in check. Colonies of fire ants consist of eggs, brood, polymorphic workers, winged males, winged females and one or more reproductive queens. New colonies are formed when a mated queen burrows into the ground and lays eggs. Once the first generation of workers emerges they begin foraging above ground for food to feed the queen and the developing brood. Within 30 days, larger workers have emerged and the colony begins to grow. Within six months several thousand workers can occupy the colony and a “mound” is readily visible. The polymorphic nature of the workers is striking: the largest workers can be up to 10 times the size of the smallest workers. The queen can live up to seven years and produces an average of 1,600 eggs per day throughout her life. At maturity, a fire ant colony can consist of over 250,000 ants. Fire ants are omnivorous. Known to eat meats, greasy and sweet materials. Fire ants are omnivores, meaning they will feed on animal or vegetable sources of food. The fire ant worker’s diet includes insects, earthworms, ticks, spiders, arthropod eggs, honeydew and other sweets. Plant sources of food include seeds. Young and newborn vertebrate animals eaten by fire ants include birds, rodents and calves. Generally, fire ants readily consume carrion (dead animals) regardless of whether the fire ants themselves caused the animal to die. One common sign of fire ant activity is the worker and swarmer ants. Other signs can be their sandy earthen mounds, which are usually more visible after recent rainfall, or the complaints of people who are being stung by ants. Fire ant mounds
have a hard, rain-resistant crust and are often found in open sunny areas. There are usually no external openings in the mound; underground tunnels allow foraging workers to come and go. Fire ants are aggressive when disturbed and will defensively attack anything that disturbs their mounds or food sources. Fire ant stings are painful for most humans if a victim experiences a severe reaction such as sweating, nausea or excessive itching, emergency medical services should be contacted immediately. Their sting, which includes alkaloid venom, is highly irritating to humans and results in red bumps and white pustules, which can ultimately lead to scarring. The sensation of a fire ant burn has been described as “stinging” and “intense burning,” and fire ants are known to attack potential threats or prey in large numbers.
Fire Ant Treatment and Prevention A landscape ticket should be submitted in the event of fire ant activity. Your landscape professionals can manage lawn infestations while your local pest control professional should help secure your homes against indoor invasions. We offer two different methods of management: spot treating as needed or annual control. Spot treatment occurs when you submit a ticket to request a service call. Annual control can be purchased for your residence and guarantees your landscape will be Fire Ant free for up to one year. For additional information or to submit a service request, go to www.myvitalia.com.

out & about Fitness Classes Current class schedules are available in the lobby and on the website calendar at VitaliaAtTraditionHOA.com. All classes are held in the Shoreside Aerobics Studio, unless otherwise specified.
Abs & More! 30 minutes of abdominal exercise combined with 20 minutes of a different target area each week (i.e.: arms, legs, back). You know you need to exercise your belly, but usually avoid it. So come join this class and check it off of your “to do list.” Core abdominal strength is essential for balance, strength, posture, coordination, and directly supports lower back strength. Participants must be able to get up and down from the floor for this class.
Aquacise at Sunset Beach Pool An excellent cardio and strength workout for all levels by utilizing water weights, aqua gloves and noodles to achieve a very unique workout. Swimming is not required.
Aqua Zumba at Sunset Beach Pool Get your ‘groove on’ as you burn calories with a complete, no-impact workout. This class is for all who enjoy having a blast while getting in an aqua-fantastic workout!
Core Strength A safe yet effective, non-impact exercise class designed to strengthen the CORE muscles of the body while increasing flexibility and range of motion. Improve strength, posture, balance and coordination. A strong foundation is a key component to prevent injury, reduce back pain and enhance your activities of daily living. Modifications will be given to ensure safety and to cater to all levels.
Group X Toning Take your workout to the next level. This class is designed to strengthen and sculpt every major muscle group utilizing hand weights and/or barbells and other equipment. Group exercise provides a motivating atmosphere that is conducive to working out! Any fitness level is welcome.
H20 Pilates at Sunset Beach Pool Non-impact strengthening and stretching movements that require precise breathing and muscle control. Practicing Pilates in the water develops trunk stabilization, enhances muscle strength, helps correct posture and relieves stress.
Line Dancing Line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one
or more lines or rows, all facing either each other or in the same direction, and executing the steps at the same time.
Pilates The content of each class is dictated by the bodies that attend it. Want to fix your sciatica; Scoliosis; or Stenosis? Don’t have any injuries and wanna keep it that way? Learn how to stack yourself with integrity (perfect posture) so you can build strength and power wherever you need it.
Step and Tone This is a form of aerobic power distinguished from other types of aerobic exercise by its use of an elevated platform (the step). It helps burn calories, reduce stress, promote restful sleep, and strengthen muscles. Incorporating both upper and lower body movements together will improve your coordination and agility, and the constant push up onto the step will increase leg strength.
Stretch Lengthen and strengthen your muscles, increase flexibility, reduce stress, and allow your body the time to relax and rebuild. Relieve joint pain, muscle soreness, and avoid injury. Stretching improves balance, posture and coordination, increases cardiovascular endurance, adds strength for daily activities, improves your sport, and prolongs life. Modifiers will be given for all levels - chairs can also be used if needed for assistance.
Yin/Restorative Yoga This is passive style using long stretches of 1-20 minutes to work the fascia (connective tissue); we will be holding for 2-8 minutes per pose. Restorative takes the same pose and through the use of blankets, bolsters and/or blocks, allows the person to “melt” into a relaxed state. All work is done on the mat either seated or lying down and may utilize the wall.
Zumba Incorporates Latin and international music and dance with a blended balance of cardio and muscle toning.
Zumba Gold Introduces easy-to-follow choreography focusing on balance, range of motion, and coordination. A modified Zumba class that recreates the original moves at a lower-intensity. December 2016 | Vitalia Voice 9

the game’s harmony. Even so, under the official rules, it is permitted, under certain circumstances, to have a change of heart after making some moves. It’s good manners to be sure before you interrupt the game. Manners are not a matter of rules - they’re a matter of etiquette. It’s important to be mindful of both rules and etiquette when playing in a group.
