Fusarium Wilt of Queen Palms
T
Tyler Heel Community Manager theel@ evergreen-LM.com 877-221-6919
he Queen palms and Washington palms are two species in our area being affected by Fusarium wilt. The Fusarium fungus was first discovered in South Florida in 2003, which significantly impacts the life of these palms within two to three months. The end result is a palm that looks freeze dried with a desiccated look at first then a sudden browning and dying of the crown and entire tree. The disease symptoms normally appear first on the oldest (lowest) living leaves, and then progressively move upward in the canopy until the palm is killed. Due to the quick decline, the necrotic leaves do not necessarily droop or break and bend down around the trunk, but remain relatively rigid. The leaf symptoms include a one-sided chlorosis (yellowing) or necrosis (brown due to death) of the leaf blades, with a distinct reddish brown or dark brown stripe on the frond.
transmit through freshly cut stubs. Only dead fronds should be removed so freshly exposed vascular tissue won’t be exposed after being pruned. Always use a professional to trim your palms or be sure to correctly disinfect your pruning tools between trimmings. Palms transplanted in soil contaminated with Fusarium fungus, and not in contact with an infected palm, have remained healthy which indicates there is no root zone infection.
Know Your Documents 16.13 Garages. No carports will be permitted. Garage doors may have embossed facing and lights (but only in the upper panels of the garage door). All garage doors must be color compatible with the Home exterior. Garage doors must be functional at all times and be equipped with automatic garage door openers. No screening shall be permitted across garage fronts. No garage shall be converted into a general living area unless specifically approved by the ARC. There is no cure and how Fusarium is spread is still debated. This disease of Queen and Washington palms are unique compared to all other diseases know to affect palm trees. No other disease kills these palms as quickly, which is within a few months of finding the symptoms. Data shows the spores are likely carried by the wind or from fronds touching an infected palm. Un-sanitized tools can also transmit the disease, but even trees where clean (sanitized) tools have been used can become infected. It is believed the spores from the infected tree

When energy, music, and comedy collide, it’s Tony Pace on stage presenting the combination of hilarious musical comedy skills, crazy characters, spot on impressions, and an endless supply of explosive energy to engage the audience. Tony Pace is truly the man with a voice who just happens to be very funny as well. Check him out on YouTube at youtu.be/5328Ng8TBNE. Share February good feelings with seniors who are less fortunate. Simply check out the tree filled with red and pink hearts in the Captiva Club lobby, then pick a heart, purchase the needed supplies for seniors, and bring the items to the clubhouse.
The Original Seasons at Tradition Saturday, May 6th | 6pm-9pm Grand Treasure Ballroom
Some stories begin with “Once upon a time…” This is one of them. Once upon a time, the original builder of Vitalia was Levitt and Sons. Building first-rate houses and amenities in planned communities was their stock and trade. A grand new community, Seasons, was being built in Tradition. Like many stories, there was a plot with unforeseen circumstances and surprising consequences. This builder of many American dreams took a downward spiral and left with a dream unfulfilled. Not all, but some, 90 of the Seasons’ homeowners stayed and became known to many others as the “Originals.” These “Originals” made the best of an unsettled situation. They hoped for a fairy tale ending of the dreams that had brought them to Tradition. That was ten years ago this spring. In celebration of this ten year anniversary in what is now Vitalia at Tradition, a party for all Original Seasons’ homeowners is being planned. Please contact Carol Rizzo at carolriz1228@aol.com if you can attend so that plans can be made. Now, with AV Homes, Vitalia residents including the “Originals” are looking forward to living happily ever after! 8 Vitalia Voice | February 2017

There is no instructor and you bring your own supplies. If you would like emails regarding classes, contact Ricky Stephens with your email address (sendaheartart@gmail.com or 239-682-6532).
If you wish to share your knowledge of a craft, please let us know and we will schedule a teaching session. If you would like to learn a new craft, let us know. We’ll work on getting an instructor. So bring your favorite project and join in or just drop in to see what we’re all about. For questions, contact Polly Lasher at 772-345-9228 or Ricky Stephens at 239-682-6532.

Mahjong Club Please contact Shelley Deixler at shell842@gmail.com for more information and days/times that the club meets. MALKA’S MAHJONG CORNER: ASK THE EXPERT Q: When can I redeem a joker? What’s the procedure? Can I redeem a joker before I take a discard? Can I redeem a joker after I take a discard for exposure? Can I redeem a joker atop my own rack? A: You can redeem a joker only when it is your turn. You must first bring a 14th tile into the hand before you can redeem a joker. There are two ways to do this - by picking from the wall OR by taking a discard for exposure. THEN, after picking (or after taking and exposing a COMPLETE exposure), you may redeem jokers from atop anyone’s rack (including your own). 16 Vitalia Voice | February 2017
The proper procedure for redeeming a joker is to take the tile from your hand and hold it in your hand to the person who has the joker you want (you don’t put your tile on her rack, and you don’t put your tile on the table in front of her), and ask her for the joker. Wait for her to put the joker in your hand and take your tile. Then you may put the joker among your concealed tiles and discard or declare mah-jongg.
