Cold Weather Stress As all of you are aware, we’ve had an extremely wild last year of weather with record drought followed by a record wet summer, a category 3 hurricane, a very wet and an unusually cool fall, and now an extended cold snap. There are both short-term and long-term effects with your landscape you should know about.

Andrea Bull Community Manager abull@ evergreen-LM.com

• •

SHORT TERM: Flowers, fruit and leaves will drop and/or discolor, brown and curl up. LONG TERM: Some roots are likely destroyed and next spring and summer, plants/turf will struggle.

way of discoloration and dead tissue (“winter browning”). Q: How can I tell what parts of my lawn are dead, and what parts of my lawn are still alive? A: First, ignore the brown leaves. Centipede grass, bahia grass, and St. Augustine grass leaves discolor and die frequently during even a mild winter. Dig down in the turf and look at the runners. A hard, firm, green runner means it is still alive and capable of producing new growth. A shriveled or black runner means that part of the plant is dead.

877-221-6919

Roots are actually much more sensitive to cold and wet weather than leaves. Think of how delicate a root is compared to a leaf. Leaves have several layers of tissue, while roots are extremely fine and tender. While the damage to leaves is easily seen, the effects on the root systems are not immediately visible. Think of the thinnest root you’ve ever seen. The parts that take up the water and nutrients are even smaller. While a moist soil will help protect roots, some roots certainly will die over this cold snap. The bottom line is this: If leaves on a plant were damaged by the cold, it is likely that the roots were also injured. It might be the summer before we see the final extent of the damage to these plants. Pest control on both lawns and landscapes is particularly important right now. Turf is stressed and weeds are poised to overtake our lawns. Landscape plants are vulnerable to insect and disease attacks. Once they begin to leaf out, shrubs will become magnets for scales, aphids, thrips, and other piercing insects.

How Will the Cold Weather Affect My Lawn? Q: Some parts of my lawn appear to be dead. Why is this? A: This winter has been unusually cold with periods of warm and very wet weather. While many plants and even turf have been slowly adjusting to the cold temperatures, it is reasonable to expect some low temperature damage to our turf and ornamental plants in the

Q: Was there anything we could have done to prevent the winter kill on my lawn? A: No. The damage was directly caused by the weather and low temperatures.

How Will the Cold Weather Affect My Landscape? Q: What will happen to my plants? A: It will be difficult to immediately tell what plants were directly killed by the cold weather, and what plants were injured sufficiently to be affected in the upcoming months. Flowers, fruits and leaves are the plant parts most noticeably affected by the cold weather. Losing blooms and leaves reduces the attractiveness of plants, but doesn’t affect overall health. Q: What about the leaves that are left hanging on the plants? A: With frost, ice also forms inside the plant, and the cells will actually burst. These leaves are dead and will not turn green again. When the temperatures rise, the leaves will drop and we can better tell how well the plant has survived the cold stress. Q: Is there anything that can be done right now to help my plants? A: Potassium and other fertilizers will help plants recover. A lawn/ landscape care specialist can examine specific plants to determine their regrowth potential. For example, if there is green tissue when a stem is lightly scratched, that part of the plant is still alive. This does not mean that the plant is out of danger. February 2018 | Vitalia Voice   3

Annual Club Updates

Leslie Boehlert Lifestyles Director lboehlert@ evergreen-LM.com 772-800-2505

Happy New Year Vitalia! This is the time of year I update all of the wonderful clubs of Vitalia. Remember, to continue as a club you will need to have a minimum of 10 active residents each time you get together. For those clubs that are finding space tight, please limit the number of your guests so residents can come first.

In the past year I have received many requests for additional art classes/instruction and fitness classes which I continue to work on. As in 2017, I look forward to working together with all of you and hearing any suggestions you have to help make Vitalia the best community it can be in 2018!

Here is what I need from each club chair, by close of business on February 16th, in order to continue having reserved time, space, and advertisement in the Vitalia Voice: • Club name and chairperson for 2018 • Club chair phone number and email address • Co-Chair (if you have one) with phone number and email address • Number of residents participating weekly (provide list if under 20) • Day or night, time, and room preferred (based on availability)

Have a Heart for Literacy

4   Vitalia Voice | February 2018

This year we are collecting books to help support early literacy for children of Port St. Lucie. There is a tree, with book suggestions, in the clubhouse lobby. Please feel free to take the book card and replace with the children’s book of your choice. We will be collecting NOW through February 11th.
