What Are Chinch Bugs and Why Are They Killing My Grass?

Tyler Heel South Florida Regional Manager theel@ evergreen-LM.com

Chinch bugs are small insects approximately 1/8” long with straw like mouthparts that feed on the fluids in grass plants. They are the vampires of turf grass! They attack any stressed turf, usually from drought/heat stress. They feed in groups hidden in the base of the leaflets. While they feed, they inject an enzyme that runs through the plant and causes large areas to die very quickly. Infested grass grows slower, yellows and eventually dies.

877-221-6919

to keep chinch bug populations under control. Most insecticides used against chinch bugs break down within 4-6 weeks and need to be reapplied. Factors that affect the length of insecticide residual include rainfall/irrigation amounts, soil pH, soil type, and the amount of thatch. Some chinch bug populations have been repeatedly treated with the same kinds of insecticides (i.e., pyrethroids) for the last 5-10 years. A few chinch bugs may survive each treatment, reproduce, and pass on their ability to tolerate the insecticides.

What Can You Do to Help?

• •

CHINCH BUG DAMAGED LAWN

Why Are Chinch Bugs Hard to Control? Each year chinch bugs have 7-10 generations per year and are active from March to November or December (depending on the weather) in South Florida. All life stages (eggs, nymphs, adults) are present at the same time. Current insecticides only kill nymphs and adults, so eggs can still hatch and produce another generation. Chinch bugs usually complete their development from egg to adult in 5 weeks. Eggs can also lay dormant in the thatch layer for many years waiting for the right conditions (usually stressed and/or dry grass) resulting in problems within the same area, year after year. One female can lay up to 300 eggs each year! Egg to adult in 5 weeks and another 300 adults laying 300 eggs each, 36 weeks in the summer; do the math…that’s a lot of chinch bugs! Natural enemies such as the big-eyed bug, spiders, parasitic wasps and others are not abundant and efficient enough

Keep a watchful eye and communicate! Notify HOA management of any areas within the lawn (or landscape for that matter) that are not green and healthy or looking the way it should. Be sure not to scalp any areas through mowing (or string trimming) of turf as this creates stress on the grass and makes it easy for chinch bugs to attack. Report any drought stressed areas of the lawn to HOA management or Girard through the landscape ticketing system, so we can get the problem fixed and sprayed before chinch bugs can set in. Under periods of severe drought, help the irrigation system by pulling a hose out and watering these “Hot Spots” before they cause permanent damage and allow for chinch bug invasions.

Just remember, we are all in this together to keep your lawn/landscape green and healthy! The more eyes on the property, the more we will be able to see things happening and catch them before it becomes a major issue.

Vitalia Food Drive From now until May 13th, we will be collecting non-perishable food in support of Grace Packs and our local school children. The mission and joy of Grace Packs is to provide weekly weekend food for students who lack an ample food supply, relieving the burden these children endure by being hungry.

Leslie Boehlert Lifestyles Director lboehlert@ evergreen-LM.com 772-800-2505

Two residents, Kathy Simon and Judy Costaldo, brought this to my attention and together we are spearheading a Vitalia food drive. Our goal is to collect as much food as possible to sustain children, in our area, throughout the summer months. The boxes will be in the clubhouse lobby until May 13th. Snowbirds, this is a great opportunity for you to clean out your cupboard before going away and give the food to a good home! Please make sure all food has an expiration date no earlier than September 2017. Following

is a list of suggested non-expired items: Juice Pouches; Granola Bars and Cereal Bars; Oatmeal Packs; Applesauce and Fruit Cups; Crackers with Cheese or Peanut Butter; Peanut Butter; Canned Vegetables; Soups and Stews; Canned Tuna and Chicken; Pastas, Macaroni & Cheese, and Rice; Pasta Sauce; and Small Boxes of Cereal. Thank you Vitalia residents for helping with this food drive!

ATTENTION CLUBS Beginning with the June newsletter Vitalia HOA has decided that due to space limitations, all club/group newsletter submissions need to be 100 words or less, regardless of the number of events the club is hosting. We are a growing community, adding new clubs and events each month, so we need to ensure we allot space for everything that needs to be advertised. As a reminder, picture submissions will be printed only if space permits.

HVAC Maintenance Reminders A Note from AV Homes Regarding home maintenance, we’d like to give residents some friendly reminders. In the first week of move-in, please consider establishing an Air Conditioner Service Contract with a professional HVAC provider of your choice. This ensures that your HVAC system receives the necessary service it requires at least twice a year. By doing so, this will keep your warranty intact. Failure to service your unit may void your warranty and cause unnecessary and costly repairs later. This will provide you with greater home comfort and peace of mind knowing that your HVAC system is in good working order. Lindstrom Air Conditioning is the company that installed the units. They do have service plans and can be reached at 954-420-5300 or by going online at lindstromair.com.

What You Can Do Now The HVAC air handler filter is a washable filter and should be cleaned once a month or replaced with a disposable filter per the manufacturer’s recommendation. The condensation drain should be cleaned twice a year with a large measuring cup mixed with bleach or white vinegar and hot water (50/50 mixture). Failure to do so will result in a clogged condensate line and possible damage to your home not covered by AV Homes. We also recommend getting a maintenance contract on the system as soon as possible if you haven’t already done so. Lastly, bathroom fans need to run for one full hour after showers or baths to remove humid air.

While looking on the internet for a home in Tradition, (VITALIA), on a Sunday, the name Bold Real Estate Group, Millie and Carlos Gil appeared. About 10 minutes away from the property we called Bold Real Estate Group. They met us at the gate of Vitalia promptly, and the rest is history. Within the hour, we found our new home. Millie and Carlos were detailed with

the contract, ensuring all was perfect. They were in touch with us almost daily, by phone, e-mail and text. Closing was a breeze and to nice to have Millie sitting next to us. We love our new home.
