Brown Patch

Tyler Heel Community Manager theel@ evergreen-LM.com 877-221-6919

If your St. Augustine lawn develops circular patches of dead, brown or dying areas of turf, then the most likely cause for these brown patches could be a lawn disease called Brown Patch. This disease is caused by a fungus, Rhizoctonia solani, which is present year round. The fall temperature range, 70°-85°, and this year’s wet conditions will set the perfect conditions for Brown Patch to trigger. Brown Patch lawn disease is triggered in a similar manner and time of year as the Leaf Spot disease. The most likely time frame for this disease is November through May when temperatures are below 80°. Brown Patch will be identified by circular dying patches of lawn, which will continue to grow in size from the size of a dinner plate up to a few feet in diameter. Multiple circles of Brown Patch are common on St. Augustine lawns infected by the disease. The fungus infects the leaf area closest to the soil, eventually killing the leaf. A soft, dark rot occurs at the base of the leaf and leaves can easily be pulled off the stem. The base of a pulled leaf has a rotted odor. Roots are not affected by this pathogen. This begins as small circular patches that turn yellow and then reddish brown, brown, or straw colored as the leaves start to die.

inspection, the lower part of the dead leaf will appear as a rotting dark brown color. Prevention is the key to stopping all lawn diseases on a St. Augustine lawn and many of the same preventative measures, which stop Brown Patch from taking hold in a lawn, will also be the cure. Here are the key steps to treating Brown Patch: • Water only in the morning, just before sunrise. This will allow any water sitting on the leaf blades to evaporate when the sun comes up. • Reduce watering as much as possible until the disease is gone. This will keep excess water from working against the treatment. • Aerate the soil in the affected areas. Soil compaction can prevent water from absorbing into the soil. • Stop fertilization until the lawn is recovered. This disease feeds off high nitrogen fertilizer. • Apply a fungicide and potash if necessary. The fungicide will inhibit disease progression and potash will strengthen the leaf blades and help roots thrive. • Sanitize mowers after mowing an infected lawn. This helps prevent further spread of the disease. Brown Patch lawn disease is most active at a time of year when the St. Augustine lawn is less actively growing, so therefore repair times from Brown Patch may be slow. A St. Augustine lawn will begin recovering after a few weeks of treatment and may take up to a few months to fully recover.

Patches can expand to several feet in diameter. It is not uncommon to see rings of yellow or brown turf with apparently healthy turf in the center. Turf at the outer margin of a patch may appear dark and wilted. The brown and dying leaf of the St. Augustine grass will also pull away from the grass stem easily. Upon

2nd Annual Party in Pink Announcing the 2nd Annual Party in Pink on Saturday November 19th from 9am-11am. Join us in the Captiva Club Ballroom for Zumba dancing, coffee, tea, donuts, raffle opportunities, Pot of Gold, and door prizes. Men and women are both welcome. $10 tickets will be available at ticket sales or at the front desk. All money collected will be donated to the American Cancer Society and the St. Lucie Medical Center’s Team Making Strides of St. Lucie. Wear PINK! Making Strides against Breast Cancer walks are the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, uniting communities with a shared determination to help free the world from the pain and suffering of breast cancer. Making Strides of St. Lucie funds research to better understand, prevent, fight, and treat the disease. The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is about 1 in 8. Breast cancer death rates have been going down, probably from finding cancer earlier and better treatment. Right now there are more than 3.1 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. Let’s support the American Cancer Society and Making Strides of St. Lucie! We can make a difference! Donations are used LOCALLY to promote prevention and early detection, to support patients in their recovery, and to pursue lifesaving treatments. lifestyles news

Hello Vitalia!

Leslie Boehlert Lifestyles Director lboehlert@ evergreen-LM.com 772-800-2505

I’m so excited to be part of such a vibrant and growing community like Vitalia, and to be your new Lifestyle Director. I moved to West Palm Beach this past December to be closer to my very vibrant eighty-year-old mother and recently relocated up to the Treasure Coast. The road leading to this opportunity began as a travel agent in Northern Virginia. Then I worked as a Wedding Coordinator in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

After spending eight years chasing disasters and helping disaster victims I decided it was time to settle down from so much travel. Next, I moved to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and became the Wedding and Special Events Coordinator for a private country club. I’ve always had an affinity for working with seniors, which led to becoming the Executive Director of a Senior Center before moving to Florida.

One year after moving to the island, Hurricane Marilyn hit bringing in the state and federal response teams. Before long, I was working part time as a Disaster Assistant Employee for FEMA. That led to moving back to the mainland and becoming a full time Community Relations Manager for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

My passions include traveling, the theatre, dancing, and entertaining friends and family. Everyone has been so welcoming and I look forward to meeting as many residents as possible. My door is always open; please stop by to say hello. With many events on the horizon I welcome the opportunity to make them as enjoyable as possible.

Art Club Wednesdays | 9:30am-12:30pm | Biscayne Room

We are moving from Tuesdays to Wednesdays effective November 2nd. Same time, same place, different day. We are a group that enjoys being creative. Many of us have never painted before, while some have years of experience. Either way we have fun, make new friends, and learn from each other. We welcome everyone from experienced artists to the beginner. We each work independently in all mediums and help each other to learn or improve on what we already know. There is no instructor and you bring your own supplies. Occasionally Ricky Stephens will teach a class. On November 16th, she will teach us how to paint a Christmas or Hanukkah card in watercolors. You do NOT need to know how to draw, as we trace the design. See the poster in the lobby for the samples. Then learn how to make your custom envelope for the card. All

supplies will be provided; however, you will need to bring an ultra-fine point Sharpie. Please email Ricky Stephens at sendaheartart@gmail.com if you want to attend this class. Open Art Day | Mondays | 1:30pm-5:30pm | Biscayne Room

You’re welcome to join us to create an art project. Bring your own project such as jewelry making, craft making, or mosaics, etc. If you wish to share your knowledge of a craft, please let us know and we will schedule a teaching session. Let’s keep “ART” in Vitalia! If you wish to join us, please contact Polly Lasher at 772-345-9228 or Ricky Stephens at 239-682-6532.

Book Club Tuesday, November 8th | 9:30am | Augustine Room

We’ll be discussing Trail of Broken Wings by Sejal Badani. Synopsis below: When her father falls into a coma, Indian American photographer Sonya reluctantly returns to the family she’d fled years before. Since she left home, Sonya has lived on the run, free of any ties, while her softspoken sister, Trisha, has created a perfect suburban life, and her ambitious sister, Marin, has built her own successful career. But as these women come together, their various methods of coping with a terrifying history can no longer hold their memories at bay. Buried secrets rise to the surface as their father—the victim of humiliating racism and perpetrator of horrible violence—remains unconscious. As his 12   Vitalia Voice | November 2016

Mahjong Club Please contact Shelley Deixler at shell842@gmail.com for more information and days/times that the club meets. MALKA’S MAHJONG CORNER: ASK THE EXPERT Q: I play American-style mahjong and need to know what to do when I have less than 4 players? 14   Vitalia Voice | November 2016

A: American style 3 players - Build 4 walls. Deal 13 tiles to each player (14 to the dealer) as normal. Just skip the empty seat (nobody is west, for example) - do not deal tiles to the empty seat. Skip the Charleston, just go straight to the dealer’s first discard. American style 2 players - Same. Sit opposite each other. Build 4 walls. Dealer has 14 tiles, opposite player has 13 tiles (as usual). No Charleston. No dummy seats. Note: Some people reject the skipping of the Charleston and make a table rule governing how to do a Charleston with 3 players. For example, when passing to the empty seat, place the 3 tiles by the wall at that side of the table. When taking tiles from the empty seat, take any 3 tiles from that side of the table. At the end of the Charleston, repair the now-thoroughly-messed-up wall on the empty side of the table.
