lifestyles news

American Diabetes Month In honor of American Diabetes Month, the Wellness Committee invites residents to an interesting documentary, Forks Over Knives, on November 18th in the Ballroom at 7pm.

Leslie Boehlert Lifestyles Director lboehlert@ evergreen-LM.com 772-800-2505

Observed every November, American Diabetes Month is an important element in the American Diabetes Association’s efforts to focus attention on the disease and the tens of millions of people affected by it. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 23.1 million Americans have diabetes with another 7 million undiagnosed. Additionally, there are another 84.1 million Americans with prediabetes. Cases of diabetes are exploding…about half of us are taking at least one prescription drug. Forks Over Knives examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed….”

Wellness Committee The First Home & Health Planning Meeting will be on November 9th at 10am. So what

4   Vitalia Voice | November 2017

has the Wellness Committee accomplished so far?! So much, including the “Equipment? Ask Me” red-shirt volunteers recruited to help in the fitness room and the first Volunteer Fair with 12 non-profits and over 160 residents. Many residents are now volunteering with organizations and one resident was able to go to Molly’s House for a night of pampering while her husband was taken to dialysis. The committee also organized the first Taste of Fitness with 9 instructors demonstrating classes and healthy food with over 170 residents. They organized the first Halloween Dog Parade on October 30th and wrote informative articles about wellness for the Voice, including topics on quitting smoking, diabetes, fitness room etiquette, and use of equipment. The committee has identified numerous topics for speakers on wellness and researched and ordered equipment for the fitness room with Instructor Terri’s help. They are also working with marketing on providing maps of Vitalia to show walking milestones.
