community news
Vitalia Shrub, Ornamental and Tree Pruning Guidelines All plant material will be pruned in the same manner throughout the Community, regardless of whether or not it is located in the common areas or around a residence. The frequency for any plant pruning will be one time per month.
Andrea Bull Community Manager abull@ evergreen-LM.com 877-221-6919
Plants utilized to form a hedge will be pruned as such and typically will be trimmed with power or gas shears. They shall be generally wider at the base and slightly narrower at the top to allow sunlight to reach all parts of the plants. Their height will be such that they are in proportion to the remainder of the landscape and adequately screen intended objects if that is their intended purpose. Plants utilized in this fashion may include Ligustrum, Viburnum Odoratissimum, Viburnum Sandankwa, Viburnum Awabuki, Coco Plum, Silver Buttonwood, Oleander, Podocarpus and Wax Myrtle. Flowering shrubs and ornamentals will be pruned as individual plants, unless they were planted with the intent of a mass planting. If utilized as single or specimen plants, they will be loosely shaped to maintain their design intent without being allowed to grow disproportionate in size with the adjacent plant material. If planted as a mass planting, they will be pruned in such a manner as to bring all of the plants together through growth and be trimmed to shape their exterior and loosely define their tops. Plants utilized in this manner may include Thryallis, Variegated Arboricola, Arboricola, lxora, Plumbago, Star Jasmine, Gold Mound Duranta, Oleander, Dwarf Firebush, Jatropha and Hibiscus. Several of these plants may also require structural pruning or cut backs at least one time per year to maintain their functionality within the landscape and their performance. These plants include Thryallis, Oleander, Dwarf Firebush, Jatropha and Hibiscus. Ornamental Grasses and similarly structured plants shall be maintained in their natural form,
but will require structural pruning or cutbacks at least one time per year. These plants include Paspalum Grass, Muhly Grass, Fakahatchee Grass, Pampass Grass and Iris. Palms will be maintained according to their growth characteristics and designed intent. Palms typically are allowed to maintain “full heads”, with fronds surrounding the tops and sides of their canopies. At the pedestrian height up to 8 feet, these palms are typically maintained at a 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock look. Palms over this height are maintained between 8 o’clock and 4’ o’clock and 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock. It is also typical that only brown fronds are removed if their appearance is within these tolerances. Self-shedding palms should be allowed to cast off their fronds and then have the spent sheaths removed. Palms included in this large category include Roebellini, Sabal, Washingtonia, Bismark, Queen, Royal, Coconut, Chinese Fan, Dactylifera, Canary Island Date, Sylvester, Adonidia, Alexander, Areca, Christmas, Foxtail, Montgomery and MacArthur palms. Canopy trees will be maintained in their natural shape and intended growth habit. As these trees mature, their canopies should be lifted in proportion to their height, but no higher than 8’ in pedestrian travel areas when mature and 14’ in vehicular traffic areas when mature. At no time should canopy trees be balled or shaped. Ornamental trees shall be maintained in their natural form as well, with the exception being the Ligustrum tree, which shall be loosely shaped in the form of a mushroom. Trees in this category include, Oak, Maple, Sycamore, Bottlebrush, Ligustrum, Wax Myrtle and Silver Buttonwood. Crape Myrtle trees shall be pruned in the early spring, removing only crossing and rubbing branches, branches smaller than a pencil in diameter and pruning 6-12” below the spent blooms of the previous season. Weight Training
Leslie Boehlert Lifestyles Director lboehlert@ evergreen-LM.com 772-800-2505
Weight training for mature adults should be an essential part of our fitness regimen. Some people believe weight training is only for younger people trying to build huge muscles, but weight training provides many benefits. Regular weight training strengthens ligaments and tendons as well as muscles, increases bone density and aids in weight loss. When you incorporate weight training, your body burns calories much longer throughout the day. Weight training should consist of compound exercises rather than simply focusing on small muscle groups such as biceps or triceps. If you need assistance in getting started in a weight training regimen, there are two personal trainers available that can develop a personalized program to meet your goals. As always, before starting any exercise regimen, you should consult with your physician.

The children learned to care for themselves and made their way to New York. Their parents followed, choosing to be homeless as their children prospered.
