Keep Your Company Moving With Online Training During this time of crisis, we need to ensure two things continue to happen: ● Continued transportation of vital goods and necessary food items. ● Open communication with drivers, dispatchers, and other employees.
COMPLIMENTARY TRIAL ACCESS WITH ONLINE TRAINING We are offering 30-day complimentary access to our system to assist companies in maintaining driver safety training, including tracking and reporting. The Coronavirus pandemic has proven the critical need to Limit face-to-face interaction between employees. But how can your company encourage remote work and still bring on new drivers safely and effectively? How can you keep your drivers up to speed on safety content that would traditionally be covered in safety meetings?
“Amazing support staff.”
Remote online training allows you to do both: ● Ensures participation and comprehension ● Consistently delivers important elements of your orientation ● Quickly gets your trucks moving safely ● Saves time, resources and money ● Simple to implement quickly and with very little effort on your part There are no shortcuts when it comes to consistency and quality. Infinit-I Workforce Solutions offers a communication and learning management system that allows you to simplify orientation through remote, online training. MAKING YOUR MILES COUNT Robert D. Scheper
Historical Opportunity from the Lock Down Chaos The 2020 tax year (April 2021) should have significantly higher refunds than the 2019 tax year. For many it will come as a great relief or bonus; to others, it’s too little, too late. A lot depends on what your employment was during the year and what freight you were hauling. Some lanes dried up and others expanded. The vast majority of drivers/operators have survived, many even thrived, not counting those households who have gone down to one income rather than two. Personal finances and cash flows have changed dramatically as attitudes of survival and fear influenced all that we did. During the pandemic restrictions, buying habits changed significantly enough to change entire industries… maybe forever. Personally, I found the lack of restaurant access traumatizing. I did not realize how much I had become emotionally dependent on someone taking my order… and then enjoying a meal in public. I cannot seem to accept eating food in my vehicle; that seems appropriate only when I’m seriously short of time. I mentioned changed buying habits as people started purchasing things online rather than shopping in stores. Personally, I seem to relate to online purchasing only when I know what I want. I used to enjoy ‘shopping’ but now I’m a simple hunter-gatherer. I found that I have spent less money. However, I’m sure there are
8 • OVER THE ROAD
those whose spending has increased due to on-line selection and availability. The point is that people’s habits have changed. Collectively, entire markets and opportunities have appeared and disappeared. What typically took a decade or more to shift, only took a year. For some, myself included, it is too much too fast. It’s not wrong, it is just different, habitual preferences. For some, their perception of cash and debt wildly changed their habits. When that was combined with their fear of economic collapse, they lost sight of their goals. A close friend so dramatically changed their lifestyle due to fear, they stopped making payments to everybody and frantically began stockpiling dehydrated and canned food. Before the pandemic, they had paid off over 90% of their mortgage. They then just stopped paying it last summer. They lost sight of their financial goal, which was independence. They got distracted by events and never looked back at what they were accomplishing. As of the writing of this article and after my counsel, they still haven’t made a payment. Maybe that just shows how little people listen to me. Change is always unsettling. The important thing is to get your feet back on solid ground as soon as possible. When it comes to finances, it’s never too late to correct your course, especially during the COVID crisis. I know people high
FEBRUARY 2021
enough up in banking to state that their ‘foreclosure’ rate has virtually disappeared. However, that’s not to say that 2021 and 2022 will not be the year of bankruptcies. I sure hope not but I know one loans officer who estimates that 20-30% of his clients will be declaring bankruptcy in 2021/22. He may have a client base that is overexposed from the norm, but that is still not a good sign.
www.makingyourmilescount.com/about/ research. The chart compares the TL2 nonrefundable tax credits (red) to the blue nontaxable benefits (as described in my book “…taxes, taxes, taxes”). The real tax savings for an operator is not in the TL2… it’s in non-taxable benefits… which increases bi-annually and independently of lock downs, political pressure or TL2 guideline changes.
As an Operator, reducing debt personally and business-wise should be your focus for the next two years. Those Operators who applied for and received a CEBA loan should start thinking about reducing it because December 31, 2022, will be coming faster than we think.
Getting an extra $1000 tax refund, if invested properly, can make a phenomenal difference in the future. Be safe, be wise. About the Author: Robert D. Scheper is a leading Accountant and Consultant to the Lease/Owner operator industry in Canada. His first book in the Making Your Miles Count series “taxes, taxes, taxes” was released in 2007. His firm exclusively serves Lease/Owner Operators across Canada. His second book “Choosing a Trucking company” is the most in-depth analysis of the operator industry available today. He has a Master’s degree (MBA) in financial management and has been serving the industry since he and his wife came off the road in 1993. His dedication, commitment and strong opinions can be read and heard in many articles and seminars.
As a company T4 driver, when considering your tax refund, remember your after-tax goal… debt-free living. Every bit counts. It may not feel this way sometimes, but it’s amazing how good, consistent, financial management contributes to your peace of mind. A T4 company driver should be focused on debt reduction while it’s still possible. CRA moved the TL2 meal allowance from $51.00 ($13.60 after tax) to $65.00 ($17.30 after tax). That’s a 27% increase in non-refundable tax credits. With the average driver’s tax return being $3,500 a year in 2019, the new return will be about $4,500. That represents one of the biggest jumps in the TL2 allowance since it was associated with the trucking industry back in 1984 (and slightly before). For a complete chart of the TL2 allowance history in Canada, go to:

WOMEN IN TRUCKING Ellen Voie
Truck Stops and Tarmacs “Don’t reinvent the wheel, just realign it”. Anthony J. D’Angelo, Author.
and how they work to design better stopover experiences for professional drivers?
We have all heard the adage about reinventing the wheel. Why spend a great deal of time and effort on working through something that someone has already explored or created? When Women in Trucking Association was formed, we looked at other trade organizations and professional groups and determined what parts of them worked for us and what didn’t. In fact, we took a lot of our ideas from an organization called Women in Aviation International (WAI).
For example, a pilot is assigned a specific route to avoid other traffic and any congestion. Wouldn’t it make sense for the trucking industry to route drivers to the best highways during the best times to avoid as many automobiles as possible?
At the time, I was working on my private pilot’s license and joined the WAI because I wanted to meet other women who fly. The airline industry isn’t all that different from the trucking industry and both have a very small percentage of women in the cab or the cockpit. Many of our challenges are similar, so why not cooperate on our efforts? What if we took that idea a step further; to redesign ways for our drivers to enjoy some of the perks that their fellow pilots appreciate? What if we looked at airports
10 • OVER THE ROAD
Commercial airplanes must deal with those of us who fly small aircraft, but small aircraft are limited in our airspace and even in some airports. If our planes are too slow or don’t have the proper equipment to communicate with air traffic control, we are prohibited from using the same airspace as our commercial counterparts. What a novel idea; to give the big planes (and big trucks) the priority because they are the ones with the more urgent deliveries. You probably won’t see a single engine Cessna flying into Chicago or Atlanta’s airports and you won’t find a general aviation plane over 14,000 feet above sea level. Those lanes are reserved for the larger, faster airplanes. Maybe trucks should have their own ‘space’ as well.
FEBRUARY 2021
yourself. Instead of reinventing the wheel, they realigned it to make your life easier. In 2021 you will be able to have diesel fuel delivered to you, wherever you are as they have partnered with a company that delivers on-demand fuel services.
Although many small airports offer self service fuel, it’s only for the airplanes that can accommodate the small fuel hoses and slow discharging pumps. The more important airplanes have the fuel delivered to them via a fuel truck. Wait, what if we could do that with tractor-trailers?
No, you won’t pay more for this service because they typically charge LESS than the rate you pay at the fuel pump, but at the very least they will match the rate you pay. Think about how much time you could save if you are not sitting in the fuel line?
Anthony Petitte, CEO of TruckPark, Inc. (http://truckpark.com) found that on average a driver must wait 62 minutes to obtain fuel at a truck stop. That’s over an hour to get your tanks filled while sitting in the fuel line for an extended length of time.
Now, if we could address the congestion issue …
What if the trucking industry adopted the airline industry practice of offering to fuel a truck to fill those tanks? The driver could pull into the parking area and order the fuel and wait for the delivery while he or she rests or secures the truck for the night.
Why not adopt some airline ideas in the coming year? Let’s realign those wheels and make the trucking industry a more successful and productive one in 2021.
Many female drivers have chosen to eat and fuel at one truck stop and then move on to another area to sleep so that no one is aware that there is a solo female in the truck. If all drivers could pull into a parking spot and wait for a fuel delivery, this could be a safety factor as well.
Ellen Voie President/CEO/Founder of Women In Trucking, Inc. ellen@womenintrucking.org www.womenintrucking.org
Mission: Women In Trucking was established to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women working in the trucking industry.
What if you could have the fuel delivered to you while you are waiting to unload or load at a customer’s dock? It’s almost the same as having my back-yard propane tank refilled so I can keep my house warm. Thanks to the forward-thinking attitude of Mr. Petitte and his colleagues at TruckPark, Inc., you will be able to enjoy this service FEBRUARY 2021

SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE Ray J. Haight
Reveal the Ugly Here is a tip on retention; reveal the ugly. Before I get too far into the weeds in my reveal process, I have observed that driver turnover usually originates in an offshoot of some extenuating factors of the past. The company may have experienced rapid growth, or the company might have been sold or amalgamated with another company. The company’s primary customer base or lanes may have switched from short-haul to long-haul. The company ownership might have been passed on to the next generation or the primary funding source may have changed, bringing new outside influences.
The chains of habit are too weak to be felt until they are too strong to be broken. – Samuel Johnson 1709 – 1784
For us, in trucking, I relate this phrase to the unending variables we deal with and the proportionately low returns we receive. You simply cannot take your eyes off the ball in any department if you are 14 • OVER THE ROAD
running a trucking company; things are just too tight. Johnson said the trouble is you do not see them coming. Habits start so small they can go unnoticed until they are “too strong to be broken.” Turnover is creeping up? Don’t worry about it. It will come back down as soon as this or that happens. Next thing you know, your numbers are out of line and you can’t seem to bring them back down as things continue to deteriorate. Most of the work I have done with carriers starts with a general conversation that paints a picture for me. It is not unlike peeling the layers of an onion. To name a few: what’s the fleet size? What type of trucking does the company do? Flatbed, van etc.? What’s the safety record of the business? What are the current driver turnover numbers and does that answer come with a lot of conjecture? How many unseated units do they have? What does the corporate structure look like and does it reveal a boss or a leader? Finally, the all-important question of; “What do you think the issue is”? FEBRUARY 2021
financials. Reveal them and see the eyes in the room roll. We know we can’t hire our way out of the current situation and, if you believe as I do, standing still will make you a target. Time is a- wasting folks. If you would like to have a general conversation on your company’s turnover, please reach out to me. Let’s see what we can see.
There is more, of course, but this can easily get a conversation started about the possible issues that cause the turnover. From here, I have a survey that will reveal what people within the company perceive and certain aspects that are vital to retention. These include: safety, communication, culture, operational training and empathy, systems proficiency, consistency in driver contact, employee opportunity, etc. Once I have all the above, I can reasonably ascertain the gaps in company performance that are likely the significant factors contributing to its turnover.
Regards and safe trucking, Ray J. Haight Ray Haight TCA Retention Coach ray@tcaingauge.com www.tcaingauge.com
Here is a tip for those companies that are worried about becoming victims of the above scenario. On your income statement, put a line item for turnover, both monthly and year to date. If you lose ten drivers a month at $7K per driver, $70,000 a month, $840,000 in any given year then my thinking tells me that this number would be acted on much quicker if revealed clearly on your financial statements - especially if it started to creep up with any momentum. Treat this as your ‘effective’ income. Drill this into your tea. Every time a driver leaves, they are taking a bag of cash of $7,000 with them. Now add gross margins from unseated units. All of this is, of course, accounted for in other areas of your

Drivers join your company because they believe they will prosper with you. The main reason they leave a company is the breakdown in communication and promises unfulfilled.

We proactively call them, on a scheduled, weekly basis, to learn about their experience with their new company: Are they satisfied? Is it what they expected? SAFETY DAWG Chris Harris
Virtual Training – It is Here to Stay Drivers and safety managers - virtual training is here and it has been here for quite some time. Providers like Infinit-i and Carriers Edge have been offering truck driver, online training for a dozen years. And I suspect that recently, more and more companies have been taking advantage of using online portals. But today, I am discussing the LIVE online truck driver meetings. These are like the Saturday morning truck driver safety meetings. You know the ones. Truck drivers are told that the meeting is mandatory and so they gather to eat some old stale donuts and drink cold burnt coffee. And the bonus, they get to listen to a “safety” specialist present the same old, worn out safety message that most have heard many times before. BORING! In the hopes of changing this typical Saturday morning safety meeting, I have been trying new ways of presenting a safety message. So, I’m looking for your help. I really want your suggestions. How do I make online live safety meetings
18 • OVER THE ROAD
more engaging for truck drivers and any other participants? Recently, I have been involved with “LIVE” online safety meetings. KRTS and Safety Dawg recently hosted truck driver online training over the US Thanksgiving weekend. We had more than 500 truck drivers attend and participate. By the feedback received, it was a success. We are hosting another LIVE training event in March. And so, I want to hear from you, the drivers and transport managers. What would make online events more interesting and engaging for you? Any LIVE Saturday morning training session has its issues. And virtual training has a unique set of problems. As a host of several virtual events, I would prefer it if the participants kept their video on. It is of course up to the viewer, but I, as a presenter, like to see faces. It helps me to know if I’m engaging the audience.
FEBRUARY 2021
I also would prefer that online viewers be muted. This keeps the sounds of dogs barking and babies crying out of the presentation. Which of course is a good thing. BUT this reduces verbal discussion that is normal during an in-person event. The muting is necessary because if more than one person talks at a time in these forums, the audience can’t understand anyone. So, everyone needs to be muted. But with muting the participants, how do we increase engagement? How, how, how?
I hope that you will be honest with me. I don’t think that in-person meetings are dead, but I do think that we will continue to see the use of online LIVE meetings. I know that there are certainly advantages to the in-person meeting and there are also advantages to the online virtual meetings as well. Neither are going away. And I really want your suggestions on how I can make the online experience better for you - the truck driver. You likely know that it is the law that companies must train their workers. So, the meetings will continue and unless you help me, you might continue to be bored during both the in-person and the online safety training sessions. I want to change that!
I do ask questions throughout the presentation. I ask you the driver, to give me a thumbs up or down as a show of engagement. But what else can be done? Keeping in mind that some truck drivers are challenged by technology, many don’t know how to use “chat” in the hosting platforms.
Please email me your suggestions to Chris@safetydawg.com. I am thanking each of you in advance. Stay Safe!
Would the use of “Polls” up the engagement? Do you think that truck drivers will engage in the use of the Zoom polling feature? By asking drivers questions during the live online training session, would this keep their (or your) interest? Would this help you stay interested in the topic being discussed?
