SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE Ray J. Haight

See Ya Down the Road Well folks, my writing column days have come to an end. I have enjoyed sharing my thoughts with ‘you all’ over the past seventeen years but it’s time for me to open a new trucking chapter in my life. Some fifty-plus years ago, when my dad brought home a truck and parked it in the driveway, I was star-struck! I thought it was such a beautiful sight. As a little kid, I can remember asking if I could wash the truck and being thrilled to be able to do so.

Fast forward a couple of years... I’m in the jump seat next to my dad. It’s summer break from high school and I am getting paid ten bucks a day to help him peddle freight all around Detroit. Three hundred to a thousand boxes, all floor loaded. Five to six drops minimum for National Freightways, Central Transport, Old Dominion, just to name a few. They were long days, hard work and a blast. I loved every minute of it! Less than ten years later, I found myself trucking to San Clemente, California. I still vividly remember heading across Nevada one early morning. The temperature was perfect, the sun was just coming up and I had my arm out the window. The engine sounded pristine and was complimented by good radio tunes. I could see for miles across the desert. That, of course, is not my only memory of the ten years I put behind the wheel, but it is one of my favorites. I wish everyone could experience one of those moments and the drivers out there will know what I mean. I experienced a ‘sink or swim’ incident early in my driving career when both my folks passed away at very young ages. Three trucks were left 10 • OVER THE ROAD

to me, along with the payments but also with one excellent, loyal customer who decided to give a twenty-three-year-old the chance to keep servicing their business. A few years earlier, I had met my wife at that same business. She ran a tow motor on the loading dock. Without her support and the odd kick in the pants, I would not be writing this article today. Fast forward again and now the company is forty-plus trucks, mostly Owner-Operators. Unfortunately, I had what business people call a near-death experience. I almost went bankrupt! It was of my own making, and I was fully responsible. I probably disappointed a few folks but eventually, everyone got paid and, in time, I got everything cleaned up, thanks to some family members helping me out. A couple of employees even jumped ship and planned a minor coup. Those were dark days. However, Wendy, a key employee, stayed, and today she is still my hero. The loyal customer I mentioned also hung in and the two of them were vital to my eventual success. After a couple of years up and running again, I was approached by a local accounting firm asking if I would be interested in a partnership arrangement with a company in Guelph. With this new arrangement, I paid off all my debt and, even though the arrangement cost me half of my company’s shares, it turned out to be a great relief. Without that partner; Southwestern Express, I would be painting a much different picture today. Some scars and scares remain and, unfortunately, they get opened in my mind from time to time. From there, it is kind of a FEBRUARY 2022

blur; McKinnon Transport with 60 flatbeds and Southwestern with 35 vans and reefers. Fast forward eight years and we were 200 power units between the two companies. Then we amalgamated Southwestern Express into McKinnon Transport and grew to 275 power units, all the while expanding into logistics and warehousing. When I first went down to Guelph, I told my partner that I was working to be out of the business by the time I was fifty. Call it a hunch, call it whatever but, with both parents gone at that age, I thought this premature mortality thing might have something to it. Fate has a way of intervening when you least expect it, so I sold my share of the business to my partner’s family. I was 50 at the time. The hardest thing to swallow was that there were no more trucks in the Haight family. Ever since I was a kid, there were always trucks around the Haight house. Now, no more! Some months later, I approached a good friend of mine, Mr. Peter Charboneau. who owned a successful recruiting magazine called OVER THE ROAD. I told him I had some observations on the industry that I wanted to share. Well, here we are, many years later and I have provided a thousand words a month since then. Thanks, Pete. You are a class act and always have been. I sat around for a couple of years, enjoyed my family, kept writing for OTR along with some other magazines, and spent too much time on the 19th hole. I got bored and went looking for a new gig. I partnered with a few folks over the next fifteen years, you may know some of them. Namely, Mr. Kevin Rutherford of Let’s Truck fame; Mr. Todd Amen of ATBS; Mr. Kim Richardson of KRTS and Transrep and Mr. Chris Henry, the architect of the benchmarking tool for TCA called InGauge. I learned something from each experience with these folks. FEBRUARY 2022

Most recently, I left the post of TCA Retention Coach where I was lucky enough to work alongside many companies to help them solidify their workforces. As my dear old friend and sales manager, Mr. Donny Urquhart use to say; “I am on the back nine and can see the clubhouse from here.” However, I am very fortunate that recently I have been asked to help a relatively young company find its footing. They have been around for about five years. Each week, I talk to their senior managers via ZOOM and I try to coach them to stay focused. I offer different alternatives on their trucking issues and, for the most part, they respond positively. I also talk regularly to the CEO. This is a dynamic company and is skyrocketing in sales and margins. They have also reduced their driver turnover from over 150% TO UNDER 25% in the past two years. It’s a great ride and I quite enjoy being part of it. Who would have ever thought I would wind up EPIC (Executive Performance Impact Coach) at JLE Industries? There are too many people to thank so I will just say, ‘thanks to everyone. It has been a blast and I’ll catch you down the road.’

MAKING YOUR MILES COUNT Robert D. Scheper

Our Future is Our Choice For nearly two years now society has had to deal with an issue that has dramatically altered people’s priorities and perspectives. Entire industries and markets have either disappeared or have been dramatically altered. The changes in some industries have been more than just from restrictions. People’s spending habits have changed because of their change in priorities. Changing spending habits (over time) will dramatically change anyone’s future position and level of stress if the changes achieve the right goal. I have just walked several dozen clients through the process of closing their corporation/business. They were unvaxed clients and wished to stay that way. Most, if not all, have gone smoothly. Some situations were much more casual than others. In fact, about half of them had very little stress associated with this dramatic change. It had little to do with the political issue; it had almost everything to do with their financial position. They were (and had been living) debt-free. They were not focused on selling a truck to meet the payments. They decided to just park it on their driveway and pay the storage insurance. One client who went to the DMV to secure storage status on his truck was greeted by a teller who said, “another 14 • OVER THE ROAD

one?” and pointed to a high stack of applications she had been processing. Living debt-free is a lifestyle too many people just do not think is possible. Imagine not having any credit card payments, no loan payments, no car payments, no truck payments... and yes, no home mortgage payments. The only payments that need to be arranged is insurance and utilities. Imagine one more scenario, having a 3–6 month emergency (living) fund in a savings account (in case of a shutdown or crisis) and an auto replacement fund in cash. So, the cash is already sitting there in the event your existing vehicle(s) need replacement (because say, you were in an accident). What would that be like? What attitude would you have towards your job? Your boss? Your co-workers? Your choices? How much stress would you NOT be carrying? What work or expenses could you eliminate if you were not tied to a financial institution? For example, I know a company that is debt-free. When they do their year-end tax returns, they don’t need an $8,000 auditor to complete it because they don’t have to report anything to a loans officer. Just imagine… doing what you want, how you want, in a time frame that suits you, not your banker. FEBRUARY 2022

In my small sample of drivers who stopped driving Jan 15th, a disproportionate amount of them lived debt-free. They were able to make choices for their personal lives without considering the financial impact. No matter what a person’s view is on this vaccination situation, we must all admit that having the freedom to make a choice without overly considering the financial consequences is very appealing. How many things do we all do that we have ‘convinced’ ourselves we have to do? I’m not just talking about productivity at a job we don’t like. I mean, why do I own a new car (or a car for that matter)? If I could, would I live in the same home as I do now? If we had a total ‘do-over’, what would we change? What would we keep and what would we move on from? We are not victims of our circumstances; we are the creators of them. We may have created our ‘now’ but still have control of our future environment. We will only be victims of our prior choices. The opportunity of a ‘do-over’ is not fairy tales and pixie dust. Given the right motivation, nearly everyone can achieve a debt-free life. It may take years and a deep level of sacrifice, but it can be done. It took me 20+ years of working weeks and weekends but I now benefit from my past sacrifice (and I even started upside down). If someone wants something bad enough, they usually can get it… if they believe they can. One thing I would guarantee… the path will not be straight, and it will FEBRUARY 2022

not be easy. However, it usually doesn’t take nearly as long as you originally estimated (unless you keep changing your mind halfway through). A lack of focus on the goal is the leading indicator of an unachievable goal. Nobody can predict the future. That’s why it’s best to create the future you want on purpose, with intent rather than let circumstances carry you to its destination. We are primarily the victim of our own choices. About the Author: Robert D. Scheper is a leading Accountant and Consultant to the Lease/Owner operator industry in Canada. His first book in the Making Your Miles Count series “taxes, taxes, taxes” was released in 2007. His firm exclusively serves Lease/Owner Operators across Canada. His second book “Choosing a Trucking company” is the most in-depth analysis of the operator industry available today. He has a Master’s degree (MBA) in financial management and has been serving the industry since he and his wife came off the road in 1993. His dedication, commitment and strong opinions can be read and heard in many articles and seminars. You can find him at www.makingyourmilescount.com or 1-877-987-9787.

SAFETY DAWG Chris Harris

YOU NEED A DRIVER SCORECARD Driver scorecards, are they useful? They have been all the rage lately. Most of the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) providers have some sort of a driver measurement. Are these driver scorecards useful, and do they add any benefit? There are other companies that are providing even more information and metrics than just the ELD device manufacturers; companies such as Fleetmetrica.

What is the purpose of a driver scorecard? It is to provide feedback to the company’s safety department and to the drivers in the fleet. Most of the scorecards are a comparative tool, meaning that they measure one individual driver and compare that driver to the rest of the fleet. An example could be fuel economy or efficiency. Most of the scorecards will tell one driver’s ‘score’. The scores that I have seen are usually displayed as a number or percentage and they are often comparing the driver’s performance to the rest of the fleet. Is it fair and is it accurate?

18 • OVER THE ROAD

For the accurate question, my experience is yes - it is very accurate. Is it fair? That is a much more complicated question. I think it comes down to how the safety department interprets the results and then applies those results. By way of an example, it can be very hard to compare fuel efficiency when the equipment is not the same. A five-year-old tractor being compared to a brand-new piece of equipment might create a problem. The same truck and trailer that goes to New York may get very different results than when in Montana. So, I believe that this score would have to be used cautiously. Remember that many of the companies using scorecards are also paying a bonus based on the results. Which is why I ask, are they useful? Is this the best way to pay a driver a performance bonus? I think that it can be a great way to pay a bonus. For those drivers that are successfully contributing to the company’s bottom line, they should be rewarded. I do think that scorecards can be improved in two major ways. First, include as many metrics or items of measurement as reasonably possible.

FEBRUARY 2022

Many of the ELD providers scorecards don’t include items such as driver violations and tickets. Few include a crash. Shouldn’t tickets and crashes be included in a scorecard? Don’t they also contribute to the company’s profitability? I believe so. The second area of improvement is by way of portability. Why can’t a driver take their scorecard with them? Wouldn’t it be a useful bit of information when applying for a new position? I certainly think so. If I was a recruiter and looking for a new driver, I would love to know about the many measurements provided by a driver scorecard. It would make a driver more attractive for the hiring process. If you are in the top ten or twenty percent of your current company, that indicates to me that you are a professional. You care about safety, fuel economy and your career. You want to make the most of your time on the road and you want to help the company make a profit. What a great addition to your application for a new position. Your personal performance data. So, what can you do if your company has a driver scorecard program, and you want a new position?

You know that you could make your application stand out by including your driver scorecard. Not many applicants will do this to make their application look special. How can you do this when your scorecard is not shareable? What you can do is take screenshots of your scores. If you can show some history, it would be added value. Your scores over a one-year period would be wonderful. But what if we think ahead? What if you started collecting your driver scorecards now before you wanted a new position? In this way, if you decided that you needed a new company you would have your history ready. I know that getting a new position now is easy, but the best companies are still very selective. By using a driver scorecard, it is separating you from the rest, so that you can always work for the best. Just an idea… Stay Safe!
