MAKING YOUR MILES COUNT Robert D. Scheper
Loyalty has its rewards In business, as in life, picking your associates is very important. Ultimately, it’s a matter of trust. How do others behave around their associates? How associates treat others in public or private eventually will reflect on you. Someone who blames others will, sooner or later, blame you. Thinking you’re immune to their disloyalty is arrogant; more than a little disingenuous… it’s delusional. Failure to secure loyal and honest associates will eventually get a businessperson in serious trouble. Historically, when a gentleman ‘introduces or vouches’ for a person, there was an implied transfer of liability. If the newly introduced person defrauded the person they were introduced to, the person who introduced or vouched for them was held jointly liable for the indiscretion. Those long-ago codes of honour have disappeared. Now it seems that everyone must find their own circle. There seems to be a lot of ‘throwing people under the bus’ lately. As the Federal Government Parliamentary Review Committee investigates the origins of enacting the Emergency Act, the conflicting blame game rages back and forth like a ping pong game. With testimony of both the former and acting Ottawa police chiefs (Sloly and Bell) denying that they requested the Act and added to that same testimony by the 10 • OVER THE ROAD
head of the RCMP, the words of Minister Mendocino who stated that the officers asked for the Emergency Act, echo empty in the halls of public opinion. I guess the real question is, who threw who under the bus? Someone must be hiding the truth; both can’t be right at the same time. To have the Emergency Act enforced based on a “misunderstanding” is, at the very least… terrifying. Let’s just hope nobody has their finger on a nuclear button with this level of communication. I have several very wealthy friends. Wealthy enough to only manage what they have rather than work to build new money. As you may know, wealthy people also circle with other wealthy people. It’s not that they are snobs, it’s just a fact of similar interests. Since February/March of this year (when our government froze bank accounts of those who donated to a cause) there has been a decided uptick of wealthy people who are actively seeking diversification of their capital outside of Canada. This is not an anomaly, it’s simple common sense. Some say the capital leaving Canada could range in the billions, while the refraining of outside capital that is normally invested INTO our country could total many times that. Money/Capital is not safe if a government does not appear stable and law-abiding. The exit of capital can and will take many months or even years. As I have personally witnessed, significant effort and action is JULY 2022
being invested in the research process of international diversification of Canadian wealth. The lawyers who guide wealth outside of the country or even multiple citizenships are abnormally busy. Some citizens have chosen to do more than just diversify; they chose to physically leave. In our firm, I found that 19% of our clients who have left the industry in the last 12 months moved to another country. They sold their homes and left. In the last 20 years, I have never seen anything more than 1% to 2% maximum. Even banks expressed concern when thousands of people began pulling cash from their accounts, totalling in the tens of millions. It’s terrifying. So, why the huge interest in international diversification or external citizenship? It all comes down to trust. Do wealthy people trust the Canadian legal system to protect capital and commerce from political party(s) who at the very least, optically, used government resources to target their political opposition? The answer, at least for many wealthy Canadians is, NO! Count me an eternal optimist but I believe this serious break in trust can be mended. If the party that enacted the Emergency Act acknowledges their error and compensates the harmed individuals for their indiscretions, I believe faith in government can be mended. In our current woke society where ‘offended’ people’s feelings are acknowledged and supported, even restitution being made for historical offences, it would be completely appropriate to offer the sincerest of apologies and fiscally compensate those

citizens who had their accounts frozen. If restitution in words or deeds are not forthcoming or at the very least, someone goes to jail for abuse of power, it would continue to be reasonable for wealthy Canadians to secure their future outside the reach of our political system. Canada must be a haven for building and storing wealth long term. Without a stellar global reputation for freedom of thought, expression and commerce, a country will eventually be bereft of capital. It will drain finances and talent away from countries that are deemed safer. It’s the simple preservation of capital, the foremost principle of financial independence and wealth building. When Should We Be Training? This month I want to discuss COVID, the flu and in-person training vs. online training.
I know. I said the word COVID again. I know that we are all sick and tired of that word and that we are all trying to banish the word and thought from our minds. But did we learn anything about training during COVID? We know that in-person training was eliminated. Did that keep our drivers healthier? By not having large get-togethers, did that reduce the number of truck drivers that got sick? The statistics during COVID showed that the flu was practically eliminated. We are being told that this is because of the lack of people meeting with people and the fact that most people were wearing a mask. If the above is true, what does that tell us about our usual ‘annual safety meeting,’ often held in person and in November? I suggest that the planners of these annual safety meetings should perhaps think about two different alternatives. The first alternative and the main reason for this article (early summer) is so that 14 • OVER THE ROAD
you can start thinking of this prior to your planning meeting during the summer or early fall. This meeting would be well before we all start gathering indoors again for the cold weather, which makes transmission of any illness less likely. I know that many companies have their annual safety meeting at the same time as the American Thanksgiving weekend. We know that cross-border trucking practically stops moving for this long weekend. So, it has always made excellent sense for Canadian trucking companies to hold a meeting while your drivers are home and available. But now, with the knowledge we have gained about Covid and the flu, does it truly make sense? Do we want to gather all our drivers, our dispatchers and other management into one common area at the very beginning of the flu season? What are some of the other choices available for the organizers of these meetings? The first one that comes to mind is to go ahead and hold the meeting as usual and let nature take its course. I know that many companies will be making this choice; but what else can be done? We could hold a meeting and JULY 2022
tell all invitees to wear a mask but, I for one, am sick and tired of wearing a mask. So, I don’t like this option. The third alternative or option that I can think of is to hold the safety meeting in an online form such as Zoom. I have recently been able to attend some industry functions in person and I now realize how much I have missed the person-to-person contact. And if I have missed it, how about our drivers? I believe that you, our drivers, have missed getting together and seeing your coworkers face-to-face. Because I believe our drivers have missed face-to-face meetings, I’m not an advocate of having an online driver safety meeting. Online sessions have their place and I encourage the use of technology, but I think some of the messaging gets lost when we do things online, so I would much prefer an in-person meeting. Ideally, I think that when possible, we should try to get all of the drivers together in one place. So, if I am discouraging an annual, online meeting and encouraging a personal face-to-face to get-together, my next question is, do we have to do it in November? Do we have to do it right at the beginning of the flu season?
I’m writing this article now, during the summer, so that you have some time to think about this. Perhaps a better choice would be to hold a safety meeting in August or September as this is before the start of the flu season. Of course, the downside is that the number of drivers that will be available is less, as it is not a long weekend. No solution is perfect. Online training has its distinct advantages and disadvantages. The November safety meeting certainly has advantages and disadvantages. As well, the late summer and early fall meetings will have their pros and cons. I’m just wondering if it’s time to think a little differently. How can we best protect our drivers and coworkers? WOMEN IN TRUCKING Ellen Voie
Let’s talk about turnover! The word turnover in the trucking industry does NOT mean a flakey pastry filled with fruit. Unfortunately, it describes a reality pertaining to the revolving door for our professional drivers. Current estimates place the turnover rate at large carriers at 89 percent. That means a trucking company with five thousand drivers needs to HIRE almost 4,500 drivers EVERY YEAR to maintain their current fleet. The American Trucking Associations explains turnover as a number that, “accurately measures drivers moving within carriers.” They stress that these drivers aren’t leaving the industry but are just finding a different company. Part of the reason a driver leaves one company (in addition to many others!) is to collect a sign-on bonus. Carriers promising up to $15,000 to come and work for them may attract the driver initially, but if that’s what he or she is looking for, they will jump to another company just as quickly. The Owner Operators Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) is adamant that the industry isn’t suffering from a driver shortage as much as it suffers from a retention issue. They cite the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s 18 • OVER THE ROAD
(FMCSA) data showing a staggering 455,000 new entry commercial driver’s licenses (CDL) annually. That would actually provide a surplus if the current need were only 80,000 in 2022. The Women In Trucking Association’s (WIT) focus is to increase the percentage of female drivers because we believe women are capable and needed as well as valued. Current estimates show that women make up only ten percent of the driving force, so there is plenty of room to grow. Women aren’t taking away any jobs from men, as we’ve often heard. (Who said trucking is only for men?) When women work in male-dominated careers, they typically earn more than their counterparts in “pink collar” jobs, such as childcare, teaching, nursing, and hospitality. Often, women are better at their job than men. The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) found that male commercial drivers are twenty percent more likely to be in a crash than their female counterparts. Company executives often tell me that their female drivers are better with their paperwork, easier to train, take better care of the equipment and are more courteous with the customers. Not ALL JULY 2022
female drivers are this exemplary, but I hear these comments every time I give a presentation. StayMetrics, now a division of Tenstreet, found that female drivers feel better about their work/life balance. How can that be? A survey conducted by WIT and Sawgrass Logistics found that 83 percent of women entered the trucking industry due to the urging of a family member or friend. This is typically a husband or boyfriend, but it means that the future female driver is already familiar with the lifestyle. While women cite the main reason for becoming a professional driver is the pay, female drivers are more likely to believe that their pay is fair based on the StayMetrics research. Women are also less likely to have driven for multiple carriers, as 55 percent of female respondents in the StayMetrics data have only driven for one carrier. This could also be related to the length of their career, as only ten percent of female drivers surveyed had been driving for over ten years. So, the debate about turnover (not the pastry) continues as we keep hearing about supply chain issues and the need for good drivers. Some solutions have been to lower the driving age for interstate commerce to 18 years old. Others cite the apprenticeship programs introduced by the Department of Labor and the Department of Transportation. What if we started treating our drivers as the professionals they are? Shouldn’t JULY 2022
a career in trucking be recognized as a skilled trade? Maybe we could do a better job educating those outside the industry to value all of us in the supply chain. Remind those four-wheelers who pays the most taxes for their roads. What if drivers were paid a salary and overtime like most jobs? A recent article about a legislator in PA who introduced a bill to require shippers and customers to provide restrooms truly disturbed me. Do we really need a LAW to allow our drivers access to basic needs such as water and a toilet? Whether you believe there is a turnover problem or a retention problem, we still have a problem. We’re working hard at Women In Trucking Association to increase the presence of women as professional drivers, but this is a bigger issue than gender diversity. Hopefully in the future, when we talk about turnover, it will be the flaky, jelly-filled kind.
