I have been a truck-driver for close to 20 years. Worked with many different companies. Almost 2 years ago contacted Transam. This was for sure the best choice we did make. Am so-happy we didn’t go with the other option. At Transam we are real people and they have an open door policy (real open). I would never drive for any other company. Wages are top of the line but most important is the respect you get. Love the owners and all the staffs.

Rick Geller ClaimsPro
Speeding – The Real Danger Even though most drivers seem to be aware of both the illegality of speeding and the dangers it presents, more than half of drivers surveyed admit to “technical” speeding. I call it technical because they acknowledge going over the posted limit, but only view this practice as dangerous when it is someone else doing it! Interestingly, the same survey showed that almost 70% of drivers believe that vehicle safety improvements make being involved in a collision less likely. This led to another eye-opener; many of those drivers surveyed acknowledged engaging in riskier behavior (such as speeding in bad weather or on poor roads) because they believe their vehicle was safer. While it is true that higher speeds increase the amount of kinetic energy which in turn increases the risk of severe injury, the real danger associated with speed is that the driver will miss important driving information which leads to poor driving decisions which leads to more crashes, injuries and fatalities. As a species, we are programmed to process information at a walking speed. Even running presents a challenge to our ability to detect relevant information, process it, decide what to do and then implement that decision. Running through a cluttered or forested area illustrates quite clearly how our ability to recognize hazards and make good decisions is adversely affected by speed.

this by focusing their attention directly ahead of them. This results in less time looking in peripheral areas, less time spent monitoring instruments/gauges as well as less time scanning for traffic lights or other approaching motorists. Safe driving requires drivers to take in and process as much relevant driving information as possible. Only then are we able to make good driving decisions that keep us and other motorists safe. And that, friends, is the real danger associated with speeding!

MAKING YOUR MILES COUNT Robert D. Scheper
Greatness Comes from Reacting In my opinion, there is no greater test of character than rejection and injustice. Our reaction to those events truly reveals our inner greatness or ultimate uselessness. It’s certainly not fair but it is the best method of revealing who we truly are. I remember many years ago I ran my first marathon. I did not train enough but I participated anyway. Around the 20-mile mark I saw two runners leaning against a chain link fence. They were balling their eyes out, both exhausted and totally empty. I could completely relate to what they were feeling. Whatever reason made me begin my marathon had long since laid trampled on the pavement behind me. My pride was gone, my determination and even my positive mental attitude all were a casualty of my multi-hour efforts. Though I had no reason to continue, I did so purely because it was simple… one foot in front of the next. In the end, I finished… but that was my only accomplishment… completion. My reaction to exhaustion was simple - don’t stop doing the simple thing… shuffling along.
16 • OVER THE ROAD
Life and careers, however, are not as simple as running. They sometimes require giant levels of focused effort. When all things seem hopeless, simple running or jogging may not be enough. Facing life’s greatest challenges requires a focus on proper attitudes and perspectives. Then, and only then, can effective reactions be formulated. Attitude comes first; wisdom and understanding second. Aligning our attitudes with grace, mercy, humility, service, sacrifice and compassion (along with all the other good attitudes) will eventually produce the great results. Reactions show the world our greatness (or uselessness). The best attitudes and consequential reactions will always require courage and fortitude. The courage isn’t needed for just a week or a month, it’s almost always a requirement year over year. I have two close friends going through a very sad divorce. Their anger may be justified, and their feeling of rejection is obvious but their reaction to their circumstances is anything but typical. Their
JUNE 2019
focus on their child as well as on their own long-term well-being has given them the vision to react with integrity and valor. It is truly an honor to watch, step by step as they make the right choices at every new situation. Their determination has lasted for nearly a year, but it is clear their greatness is already beginning to shine. It’s not that they don’t have moments of great sorrow and exhaustion… but they haven’t given up on their path to maturity and they don’t seem to be vulnerable to it (at least yet). All-be-it, they do have a close friend and mentor who has gone through it before them (a super advantage I admit) but it still takes an independent will to succeed. They themselves make their choices every day. Nobody can take that away from them.
True greatness requires proof of endurance, consistent positive and shining reactions in dark times. It’s what our children and grandchildren will tell their friends about us. We overcame dark, hard and perilous challenges. About the Author: Robert D. Scheper is a leading Accountant and Consultant to the Lease/ Owner operator industry in Canada. His first book in the Making Your Miles Count series “taxes, taxes, taxes” was released in 2007. His firm exclusively serves Lease/Owner Operators across Canada. His second book “Choosing a Trucking company” is the most indepth analysis of the operator industry available today. He has a Master degree (MBA) in financial management and has been serving the industry since he and his wife came off the road in 1993. His dedication, commitment and strong opinions can be read and heard in many articles and seminars.
Endurance is the mother of greatness. Perseverance is the seed from which nobility is born. Anyone can endure a few days or weeks, but greatness requires these two resources in years or even decades.
You can find him at www.making yourmilescount.com or 1-877-987-9787.
Don’t give up doing what is right. Don’t compromise sound principles for shortcuts and fast times. We can’t water down our character with the selfish and easy ways of common humanity and think that we won’t suffer for it.

“I have been here for 21 years. Most of the office staff have been here a long time too so know what they are doing. There are also a lot of long term drivers here that have it figured out as well. With having such knowledgeable staff, changes go smoothly without noticeable problems. For the most part, a driver gets home on time and gets back out on time. After so many years, it is a family environment that can have problems but they are all solvable.” — Mark Reeleder, Truck # 801

You Could Be Saving More Money In Your Business... Maximize Your Training Program with Infinit-i Workforce Infinit-i Workforce was designed to inspire and create behavioural changes in your truck drivers and other employees responsible for the day-to-day operations of your trucking company. Infinit-i Workforce not only gives you access to over 800 training videos, but it also provides the best online training, tracking, reporting, and online driver communication platform in the industry.
1 Streamlined Orientations The average savings for a company who is able to eliminate one day of time a driver spends in orientation by using Infinit-i Workforce, including getting the driver on the road one day sooner, equates to $1008 per driver hired.
2 Improved Fuel MPGs By completing the 26 fuel efficiency videos in the Infinit-i LIbrary, Infinit-i Workforce clients have reported increased fleet MPGs by as much as five percent.
3 Instant Corrective Action Training When a driver receives a violation, or is involved in an accident, it is imperative the driver undergoes corrective action training before they get back on the road. Infinit-i Workforce enables you to assign corrective action training immediately following any driver infraction, getting your drivers back on the road sooner.
4 Improved Driver Retention According to a recent study, 40% of employees who receive poor job training leave their positions within the first year. With the average cost to hire one new driver at $8,234, improving driver retention rates with ongoing training can substantially improve your bottom line.
5 Decreased CSA Violations CSA violations mean costly fines for your business. A 2014 study found 76.3% of violations should have been discovered during drivers’ pre-trip inspections. Infinit-i Workforce offers short training videos keeping your drivers aware of possible CSA Violations and best practices for pre-trip inspections.
6 Decreased Frequency & Severity Insurance rates are directly tied to the frequency and severity of accidents companies have in a given five-year period. Ongoing training with Infinit-i Workforce has been shown to help decrease frequency and severity of accidents.

SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE Ray J. Haight
Tackling Driver Turnover - Part Five – Recognition and Esteem Needs Recapping what we have learned so far would have us remember step one which was; creating a firm foundation for change starting with a commitment from the senior leadership. Part 2 was determining where you are in the marketplace for driver compensation and matching your position to your company’s growth strategy. Part 3 was emphasizing and focusing on the critical role that safety plays in the recruiting and retention of drivers in any trucking company. Part 4 was the creation of a communication strategy that includes all the stakeholders, Drivers and their families, Owner-Operators and their families, customers, suppliers, people inside the walls and the communities in which we operate. Part 5 attempts to recognize people doing the right things and to reward that behavior by shining a light on the individual or individuals involved. Do you believe that people want to be with winners? Does being with winners inspire you to win and to try harder for a better result? The life of a truck driver is stacked against such an atmosphere if you dig into it. Fighting traffic daily, attempting to stick to a predetermined schedule of pickups and deliveries, understanding the basics of the machine that they are in charge of daily and on top of all this, navigating through the fact that operations often wants to find a bad guy when things go wrong.
24 • OVER THE ROAD
Think of all the moving parts that go into moving a load of freight; first, a salesperson finds the load and starts the process of making sure the potential customer’s needs can be fulfilled. They will need to know the weight of the shipment, the value of the load, traffic lanes and the pick-up and delivery schedules to name but a few pieces of information the salesperson needs to get accurate. Then the quote is assembled and given to the customer. If successful, that information is typically provided to a customer service representative whose job is to liaison with the customer and gather all the details needed to initiate the pickup of the freight. There could be up to five people from various departments that would have some role to play in setting this first movement. Then this accumulated information is sent to the driver to execute with precision, and to ensure that customer service is spot on so that the company can enjoy additional volumes from this shipper well into the future. Now as we all know, with this many moving parts, it is not unreasonable that something may go wrong. When and if it does, the first question that is usually asked in your typical trucking company is: “who was the driver on that load?” In our misbegotten quest to see who screwed up, we typically start with the driver and that’s just the world they live in. A favorite driver saying is: “you are as good as your last load”. One way to fight this tendency JUNE 2019
each. There were three questions for each person: what is your biggest challenge for the day ahead, which driver went above and beyond yesterday (to make sure they are appropriately thanked), and which driver needs to be brought in for a coaching opportunity? What we were doing was to raise the bar. Not only by recognizing the star of the day but also by coaching a future star. Again, I must stress, we are not looking for bad guys; we are looking for ways to improve our service by identifying behaviors that contributes to our winning culture.
is to adopt a process of analyzing what happened by disassembling each part of the process to see where things broke down. We’re not looking for bad guys here; we are never looking for bad guys, we’re looking for errors or omissions from our documented process or SOP (Standard Operating Process). Was it written wrong? Is it stale dated? If none of these things are apparent, then and only then might we have a performance issue. Recognition can come in many forms: it could be company-wide with Best Fleets to Drive For awards, it could be national fleet safety awards, it could be recognition of an individual driver, of safe miles, of longevity with the company, for on road acts of bravery to name but a few possibilities. No matter what form you decide on, I will guarantee you that even the biggest and most hardened truck driver in your fleet will walk a little taller when you sincerely thank them for what they do. I have seen it time and time again. The scenario of “who was the driver on that load” is what they are used to so thanking them will catch them off guard. In fact, most of them will be shocked and a little wary as to the company’s motivation.
I often quote Coach Jimmy Johnson whom I heard at a general session during a TCA event some years back. During the Q&A portion of the meeting, he was asked how he managed the new, young millionaires that came to the Miami Dolphins each year. His answer was striking to me which was; as leadership, if you speak to people the way they are they will remain that way. If you speak to them the way you want them to be, they will become that. Robust systems supported by dedicated individuals, who recognize and reward high performance create a winning team and all that comes with it.
Pick your way of doing it but make sure it is genuine. Thanking people for just showing up and being average is not what this is about. We are looking for above and beyond acts. These things happen in your business every day. All you must do is keep on the lookout for them. The funny thing is that once you start the process, the “above and beyond” will happen more and more often.
Take good care. Ray J. Haight Ray Haight TCA Retention Coach ray@tcaingauge.com www.tcaingauge.com

SAFETY DAWG Chris Harris
A Camera Can Save the Day Recently a trucking company client told me a story. Their Safety Director received a telephone call from a man who stated that he was currently in the hospital. He told the Safety Director that he had been rearended by one of his trucks and he claimed that the truck driver simply took off after the collision. The man was putting the company on notice that he will be looking for damages and restitution. It is generally accepted that a rear-end crash is the fault of the person operating the vehicle that crashed into the other vehicle unless it can be proved that the other vehicle made some inappropriate actions. But how can you prove that? If you don’t have any witnesses, how do you prove that the other vehicle did something wrong? Most provinces have what are called “Fault Determination Rules.” These are regulations that insurance companies follow when determining what percentage of fault those involved in a crash are responsible for. In Ontario, the fault determination rules have colored pictures and assign responsibility by percentage. Rear-end crashes are always the last vehicle in the sequence and are 100% to blame.
28 • OVER THE ROAD
Well, what if a crash wasn’t your fault? What if someone cut you off at the last second? Worse, what if the other vehicle purposely caused the collision so that they can sue the company and the driver? This may not be prominent in Canada but it certainly happens a lot in the United States. Getting back to the story, this trucking company has GPS systems in all of their power units. So it was not difficult to determine which tractor trailer was in the area of the alleged crash. The Safety Director quickly identified the unit closest to the incident and he then reached out by telephone to the driver involved and asked if anything unusual happened today. The driver was quick to respond. “Yes” he said. “A car cut me off at a toll booth and then slammed on their brakes, coming to an abrupt stop in front of my truck”. The Safety Director asked, “Did you have contact with the car?” The driver was adamant, “No way! That jerk cut me off and then slammed on his brakes as if he was trying to cause a collision with me. I know that I didn’t hit him and I have proof.” Of course, the next question from the Safety Manager was, “What
JUNE 2019
proof do you have? We are facing serious allegations that the company will need to defend. The fellow in the hospital has made it abundantly clear that he is pursuing litigation against you and us”.
driver may even sell the empty seats in the vehicle to others so that they can sue and profit too. The risk of a crash allegation must be taken very seriously and trucking companies must defend them vigorously. It will be your driver’s word against the car operator’s word unless you have a good witness or you have a Dash-Cam. These cameras, which can be either a front facing only camera or a front and driver facing camera are a money saver. In the case of our story, it will prove that the truck made no contact with the car. The Dash Camera may even be the evidence needed by the police to lay charges against the car driver for making false statements and lying to the police. Serious charges for sure.
In this case the proof was that the driver had installed a Dash-Cam in his tractor. He had installed a two-hundred-dollar device that will save the company and the driver all kinds of grief and possibly money. My point about this true story is that it happens more often than you might think. Staged collisions happen! Incidents are fabricated in the hopes of getting money. Pure and simple, it is about money and greed. The above story is all I know so far about this incident as it has not yet been determined how it will end.
What is the point of my story? If your company doesn’t equip their trucks with Dash Camera’s then maybe, you as the driver should. It is a great way to protect yourself.
The reason trucking companies are signaled out for staged events like this is that trucking companies have insurance and usually more insurance than the minimum amount required. So that is why a truck is often chosen to use in the staged lie. Also, trucking companies and their big trucks are not usually looked upon favorably in court. They are often perceived as the big bad bully. After a staged collision like the one in our story, the car driver may even back the car into something solid to cause more damage to the rear end of the car. Of course, the driver will certainly be “hurt” with some fake injury that is difficult to diagnose and disprove such as a back or neck injury. He will then sue for loss of enjoyment, pain and suffering and loss of income. The car

WOMEN IN TRUCKING Ellen Voie
Thanking People I recently traveled to Australia to speak at a conference. On my flight from Sydney to Perth, I was pulled aside for additional screening for explosives. The agent passed a wand over my luggage, my shoes and my hands. He then put the wand into a reader before he let me go. I thanked him for doing his job and went on my way. On my return flight, I was again “selected” for additional screening and went through the process again. I made a point to thank the agent for doing his job. Many people would feel inconvenienced for being pulled aside for additional screening. However, these people are only doing their job. They are asked to pick travelers at random and check them for explosives. Did I enjoy the process? No. Did I appreciate the delay? No. However, I did appreciate the fact that these people were helping to keep us all safe by looking for potentially explosive material. Sometimes we take these people for granted. In the trucking industry, we need to appreciate the person doing the random check for hours of service

violations or for faulty brakes or any other of the numerous potential violations that occur at a roadside inspection. These people are hired to keep you legal and to keep our highways safe. They’re doing their job. If you honestly thought about what they do from their perspective, you would appreciate what they are doing to keep you and your family safe. Instead of having an “attitude” at a scale or inspection site, what if you put yourselves in their shoes? They are hired to check your truck, your documents and your company’s safety record. They are there to make sure that you and your fellow drivers are in compliance. Think about their perspective. They don’t hate you. They understand the value of your time. They know you’re doing your job to deliver your load. They don’t want to see you lose income because of time constraints. They don’t know you personally and it’s not about you. Have you ever noticed someone doing their job and wondered how they can get up and go to work each day? What about

Facebook page and I’ll share the story with others.
A few years ago my colleague, Char and I, decided to thank at least one person each day for making life better by cleaning, serving or waiting on us. The first person we saw was a woman who was cleaning the mirrors in an elevator. We thanked her for making the elevator spotless. The look on her face was priceless. It was apparent that she wasn’t used to being noticed, much less appreciated, by the folks staying at the hotel.
We could probably all be more understanding when we are inconvenienced by people who are merely doing the job they were hired to do. Next time you’re pulled over at a scale or roadside inspection, in an airport for additional screening or for any other delays on your time, thank the person for doing his or her job. You might surprise them and maybe you’ll start a trend in thanking people.
Now, when I see someone working hard to keep something clean, maintained or by serving me, I thank them. Everyone needs a smile and an acknowledgment (and a good tip!) Don’t you wish more people recognized how hard you work to serve them?
