6 WAYS
You Could Be Saving More Money In Your Business... Maximize Your Training Program with Infinit-i Workforce Infinit-i Workforce was designed to inspire and create behavioural changes in your truck drivers and other employees responsible for the day-to-day operations of your trucking company. Infinit-i Workforce not only gives you access to over 800 training videos, but it also provides the best online training, tracking, reporting, and online driver communication platform in the industry.
1 Streamlined Orientations The average savings for a company who is able to eliminate one day of time a driver spends in orientation by using Infinit-i Workforce, including getting the driver on the road one day sooner, equates to $1008 per driver hired.
2 Improved Fuel MPGs By completing the 26 fuel efficiency videos in the Infinit-i LIbrary, Infinit-i Workforce clients have reported increased fleet MPGs by as much as five percent.
3 Instant Corrective Action Training When a driver receives a violation, or is involved in an accident, it is imperative the driver undergoes corrective action training before they get back on the road. Infinit-i Workforce enables you to assign corrective action training immediately following any driver infraction, getting your drivers back on the road sooner.
866-904-5087 OCTOBER 2019
4 Improved Driver Retention According to a recent study, 40% of employees who receive poor job training leave their positions within the first year. With the average cost to hire one new driver at $8,234, improving driver retention rates with ongoing training can substantially improve your bottom line.
5 Decreased CSA Violations CSA violations mean costly fines for your business. A 2014 study found 76.3% of violations should have been discovered during drivers’ pre-trip inspections. Infinit-i Workforce offers short training videos keeping your drivers aware of possible CSA Violations and best practices for pre-trip inspections.
6 Decreased Frequency & Severity Insurance rates are directly tied to the frequency and severity of accidents companies have in a given five-year period. Ongoing training with Infinit-i Workforce has been shown to help decrease frequency and severity of accidents.

MAKING YOUR MILES COUNT Robert D. Scheper
Integrity in Politics One of the things I am most thankful for in our country is our election cycles. Legally it’s only about 30 days. Can you imagine living in the United States? Some of their elections drone on publicly for years before the vote. It would be about as easy to convince me to accept years of campaign advertising as it would be to convince a pregnant woman to be in labor for 180 hours. It’s just not right… someone’s going to get hurt! Now that the election is over, we must live with the consequences of the majority choice. We can be confident in our minds that our bureaucracy will adjust to the potentially new laws and new policies… because (in my opinion), they truly run the country. The longer I live, the more I’m convinced that Canadians don’t elect people INTO power… they elect people OUT of office. They are not as happy to see people get in as much as they are happy to see someone get booted out. Therefore, most Canadians end up being at least somewhat political party neutral. To be honest, I just about got into politics about 18 months ago (not Federal). I had developed an odd availability of both my time and my passion. I spent many months researching the issues and responsibilities
12 • OVER THE ROAD
of being a politician. I was confident I could wrestle with the issues, but I had a growing doubt about my patience level with compromising quality and efficiency (along with having to deal with the public… like dealing with two whining neighbors; one complaining about the others barking dog). Being President of my own company has allowed me the luxury of building a great team, designing outstanding objectives and accomplishing high level goals. I am not a short term, incremental thinker; I enjoy big, long term projects. Working in the political field appears to be a lot of noise and bluster with very little real progress… unless you are into destroying something… then it seems you can go full steam ahead without much objection. Being President of my own company also allows me to weather the difficult, long term goals (those longer than 4-5 years). Progress in politics just goes too slow for me and I realized I’m too old to learn how to slow down. During my research, I interviewed elected officials and discussed when foes outnumber friends. Being outnumbered by others with regressive, catastrophic ideas would not be fun. In that case, my primary responsibility and reaction would be to stop something bad
OCTOBER 2019
from happening rather than implementing something good. It would suck! To use a hockey analogy, I’m much more of a forward than a goalie.
without pain. However, when people refuse to be taught by common sense and understanding, they must be left to experience failure.
I have a few friends in that very position. They have been given the task of protecting the public from compromised representatives. I have a deep appreciation for their role in our government. They must be protected and respected for their tireless contribution. It is truly a thankless and painfilled profession.
The opportunity to succeed and fail is what creates a true, level playing field. It’s the equality of opportunity, not the equality of outcome that builds a great nation of freedom. Long term speaking, I would sooner trust the collective masses NOT in power than the select few IN power… no matter which party they represent.
However, I also have a few friends who dwell in the corridors of power. Their influence in policies and laws are palpable. For some, power appears to corrupt them; for others, it has not. I’m not sure if anyone (myself included) could be sure of their own reaction if they were given great power. For elected officials, accountability must constantly be the norm. In the end, I decided to save my fellow constituent from experiencing too much of me and decided not to run.

His first book in the Making Your Miles Count series “taxes, taxes, taxes” was released in 2007. His firm exclusively serves Lease/Owner Operators across Canada. His second book “Choosing a Trucking company” is the most in-depth analysis of the operator industry available today. He has a Master degree (MBA) in financial management and has been serving the industry since he and his wife came off the road in 1993. His dedication, commitment and strong opinions can be read and heard in many articles and seminars.
I am convinced that for the best way for our society to thrive, government power must be minimized; not expanded. Individuals must learn NOT to depend on our government for anything but national security and a fair justice system.

This would mean the average person must be given the freedom to fail (so they can learn what works and what does not). That doesn’t mean we all have to learn our lessons in the school of hard knocks; some can learn humility and wisdom

SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE Ray J. Haight
WHY NOT US? I have done a dozen or more Retention Action Plan rollouts over the past couple of years. One of the key questions that I pose to folks during the on-site workshop that revolves around the TCA’s “Best Fleets to Drive For” contest and “The Safest Fleets in North America” contest is as follows, “What do the fleets that go up on that stage to accept these awards have that your company doesn’t?” From the outside looking in, they have trucks, they have drivers and they have a supporting infrastructure that strives to pick up and deliver the freight on time, the same as every other fleet in the industry - right? So, if that is what you are doing, why aren’t you folks up there in the limelight? By agreeing with that statement, you would be spot on in the notion that they have the same key elements that any other company has, but there is so much more to it. When you look a little deeper, these winning companies also have several clearly stated core values that are rock solid and unflinching. They also have a commitment to a level of performance that brings with it a thirst to become better every single day, in every element of their business. If you can create that type of culture in your business, you will be standing on stage accepting awards on a regular basis. If you are not on stage collecting these types of awards, you are likely wondering how to get at it and be that carrier. It starts with a refocus on accepting your current situation and owning it. What I 18 • OVER THE ROAD
mean by that is you need to take responsibility for where you are at with your business. The good, the bad and the ugly. Because, if you don’t you will not be able to move on from where you are at and create the winning culture that you are looking for. If your CSA scores are not where they should be, own it. You let it get there, no one else. Is your turnover not anywhere where it should and could be? Own it. You set everything up exactly right to get the numbers you have. Profitability has been sliding and you don’t see a clear path forward to black ink? You did that. Are there too many unseated trucks against the fence crunching your cash flow? You own that one too. You did it so take responsibility for it. Whatever it is, before you can move on and take control of the situation, you must accept the concept that you created the environment/culture within your business to allow this type of subpar performance. Allowing the blame game to creep into your business almost certainly guarantees a multitude of excuses that are designed to divert responsibility to anywhere but where it belongs and that is at your feet and the feet of your people. Poor CSA scores mean that safety likely does not have a proper seat at the table in your management hierarchy. Safety is a moral obligation to the communities you operate in and to everyone in your business. What authority do they have in your business to OCTOBER 2019
So, why is it not you representing your company up there on stage accepting these awards? Only you can answer that question. Could it be that the status quo has become a comfortable place for you to work in? Is accepting second best good enough? I think that this quote comes close to the facts: “The chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken.”
achieve best in class performance? The turnover in your business is directly related to your company’s efforts in creating a driver-centric culture. What strategy do you employ to effect change in your retention numbers? Do you have your frontline workers engaged in this effort? Do they have the authority to contribute to the effort? How do you foster that? Is your profitability not what it should be? Are you so caught up in the whirlwind of operating your business and not on your business that you can’t see the dollars flying out the window because you are forever putting out fires? Where is the stability in the day to day operations you need? It’s there, you just need to bring the right discipline and structure to the table and above all, that sense of responsibility to a higher standard of performance.
Busting out of the mold of being okay with results that are just not as good as they could be is not easy, but neither is anything worth pursuing! It all starts with the first step. This is where good can be the enemy of great! The leaders in charge of the companies accepting those awards were not afraid to jeopardize good performance to go for great results. It takes a good team, a good plan, and leadership that is dogged in the pursuit of being named best in class. It’s never too late folks. If you would like to discuss this subject further, please drop me a line.
You get the idea here, we all reside in the communities we live in because we are comfortable there, we are in the relationship that we are in with our spouses, friends, children and so on because we are happy around those folks. We’ve got their backs and we know they have ours. A winning company shines above the rest because they have created a positive sense of community within their business. Workers have a sense of autonomy; they believe that what they do contributes to the overall success. It’s fulfilling work.
Safe Trucking Ray J. Haight Ray Haight TCA Retention Coach ray@tcaingauge.com www.tcaingauge.com
Ask yourself this simple question? If you were a Driver or Owner Operator looking for a carrier to work for, would you work for your company? If not, you must ask yourself why? That’s a good starting point. Next question, if you were a driver looking for work, would the fact that a carrier has won multiple awards influence your decision when deciding where it is that you are going to spend your career?

SAFETY DAWG Chris Harris
Why Drivers Cannot Drive for Smaller Trucking Companies “Why does it take so long to apply and get a job at many of the smaller companies today? I want to work for the company located just down the street. I went to school with the owner’s children and they were good friends. So, I want to work for their parents. Why is it so hard to work for a small trucking company today”? I was asked this question recently and I can answer the question since most of my clients are as described above—small, local trucking company with roots in their community. These trucking companies are primarily getting applicants by word of mouth and because of their reputation. So why is it so damn hard, in this market, for these same small, trucking companies to hire experienced, truck drivers and what can a driver do about it? (Newly licenced drivers are a different question and I have written about that in previous editions of OTR). Most drivers understand that it is not usually the trucking company that is the roadblock to being hired. In many cases, it is the trucking company’s insurance provider that is the obstacle. The insurance company demands that the trucking company prove the applicant’s
22 • OVER THE ROAD
experience. This is where the driver applicant needs to be of assistance; when you are applying for a new position you need to bring all the necessary information you have with you because the insurance company will want to have your driving experience verified. What is it that the insurance companies want? They want and need proof of your experience. So, you, the applicant, need to provide the name of the insurance company of your current trucking company and the names of the insurance companies of any past trucking companies you have driven for. How do you know who the insurance company is? Their name is on the Pink Slip or the insurance documents. Since you are in the truck every day, make sure the proof of insurance or Pink Slip is in the cab which is part of your vehicle inspection. Write down and keep a record of the insurance company’s name. If you are with a trucking company for more than a year, your name should appear on the driver roster that the trucking company submits annually to the insurance provider. But here is where the problem often arises; fleets only provide the list of current drivers at insurance renewal time. If you have not been working at that trucking company for a year, your name
OCTOBER 2019
may not be recorded on the list and with the insurance company. For many drivers who don’t stay for at least a year, the insurance company doesn’t even know that the driver was working for the trucking company. Now, when proof of experience is being asked for, (many of the insurance companies are now requesting the proof of experience from other insurance providers), nobody knows that you were driving for that company. This is a real problem because the insurance companies have been defrauded many times by drivers with no experience, who are providing fake experience letters and subsequently crashing. The insurance companies have been forced to insist that the experience letters be provided from a trustworthy source, which in most cases is a fellow insurance company.
to be hired on to work for a smaller trucking organization. You must plan for that extra time. It is not the trucking company’s fault that this is going to take time. I’m hearing that it is taking weeks for insurance companies to approve applicant drivers. And of course, when proof of experience can’t be verified, then in most cases, the applicant is denied for approval. I know hearing this might hurt, and of course you, the applicant driver, can’t understand why because you know that you have the necessary driving experience. But can it be proved?
Can you see the problem here? If you are not on the driver’s roster, which is recorded just once a year at your current insurance provider, then you may have a difficult time proving your experience to a smaller carrier. The large trucking company doesn’t have the same issue. That is largely because the bigger company has a much larger, insurance deductible so that they can hire almost whomever they want — big advantage to the big guys.
This is not an ideal situation that we are in currently. It is taking way too long to get driver approvals and it is the insurance companies’ fault. They don’t seem to be cooperating with each other. But unfortunately, I don’t see this changing anytime soon. We are in a ‘Hard Insurance Market’. This means that a trucking company doesn’t have a lot of choices when it comes to getting an insurance provider that is easier to work with. So, don’t expect changes anytime soon.
The second part of the question, “What can you the driver do about it?” As I wrote previously, know who your insurer is, and who they were in the past and stay with a company whenever possible for at least a year.
How can you as a driver applicant help yourself to get hired? You NEED to know the insurance company that insures the fleet that you are currently with, and also past insurance companies. Try to stay longer than a year with a trucking company; in that way, your name should appear on the driver roster given to the insurance company. Lastly, and the hardest, is to be patient. It may take you some time

The trucking industry, in general, has worked closely with government agencies to reduce the number of truck-related crashes. Until recently these efforts have not been in vain. However, for the last 5 years or so, the number of truck-related crashes has been climbing and it has become more challenging to develop and formalize meaningful safety initiatives. As the results of the 2019 enforcement campaign would suggest, we still have a ways to go. Commercial drivers differ greatly in their levels of crash risk. Typically, a relatively small percentage of drivers (10-15%) account for a disproportionate percentage of total fleet risk (30-50%). We all share the responsibility to prevent inappropriate behaviour, to detect it when it occurs and to manage it appropriately. Enforcement alone has little chance of solving this problem. For drivers, this means developing a strong commitment to exercise self-control behind the wheel and focus on their mission to arrive safely. As the slogan for the 2019 enforcement campaign correctly points out, “Being late won’t kill you – speeding will”! For carriers, this means developing meaningful internal systems to support the desired behaviour. Relying too heavily on technologies and telematics risks shifting the focus from the overall strategy of operating a safe fleet to the metrics that were meant to represent it. That sort of shift removes the focus on the overall safe driving strategy and places it squarely on gamifying the numbers to stay off the radar screen. It is important for both to remember that current and future regulatory requirements, coupled with insurance industry scrutiny, are aimed at removing the hiding spots.
