Dancing With The Stars From The Top If you are one of the dozens of millions of fans of Dancing with the Stars, you may be interested in a bit of its history. Dancing with the Stars started in the United Kingdom where the show originated although there it is known as Strictly Come Dancing and is aired by the British Broadcasting Corporation - the BBC. The international arm of the BBC decided to patent the it and sell the franchises. Australia was the first country to take up the offer and America's ABC network followed suit on June 1st 2005, changing the name to Dancing with the Stars because they considered that it would better attract an American audience. It was not known whether the format of the show, which is to do with ballroom dancing would work in the States as well as it was in the UK. The fears proved to be unwarranted, because Dancing with the Stars was an instant success, particularly with women and elderly viewers. The format of the show is to do with ballroom dancing, contemporary and traditional. There are six couples, one of which is a celebrity and the other of which is a professional dancer. The couples perform their own routines and are judged by a panel of specialists, although the final decision lies with the television viewers who phone in to cast their votes for the pair they liked the most.. Couples are eliminated until there are only two left in the final. The music is orchestral and the sets are extravagant and showy. In the first series there were Trisha Rehn and Louis van Amstel, but they were eliminated in the first week on June 8th. The next to go was the ex-heavyweight woldchampion boxer Evander Holyfield and his professional companion Edyta Sliwinska. Rachel Hunter, the well-known supermodel, and her partner Jonathan Roberts lasted a little longer, helped no doubt by the grace and poise that had aided her work on the catwalk, but she was out on June 22nd. They were followed by Joey McIntyre of the Eighties boys band New Kids on the Block and his expert dancing partner Ashly DelGrosso on June 29th although that did place them in third position. Second position went to John O'Hurley and Charlotte Jorgensen on July 6th which left Kelly Monoco of Baywatch and Alec Mazo as the winners. It was a tough competition and the fate of the show was sealed. It was clearly a hit that would run and run, despite the critics' predictions that the style of Dancing with the Stars was too old for America. The viewing numbers have increased with each season as more and more people tune in to see which celebrities are going to compete and how they do. The public has a peculiar fascination to see how their favourite celebrities can dance. 2012 sees the fourteenth series and it is more well-liked now than ever as it is all over the world. Thirty-eight countries currently run their own local forms of Dancing with the Stars from Vietnam to Brazil.
