The Express had their most successful season of all-time in 2012-13. The year started with a second place finish at Olivet College, but the Express finished in 1st all but two more times the rest of the year. The Express finished 15th at the NCAA Div. I University of Dayton Invitational. The Express also placed 10th in the NJCAA D-II National Championship as well. Brandon Hoelzer led the way for the Express. He was named an NJCAA D-II Honorable Mention All-American following the conclusion of the tournament for his 25th place finish. He becomes only the second Express golfer to achieve All-American honors, following Joey Bussdieker’s Honorable Mention All-American year in 2007-08.

Hogan and Hoelzer Lead Express Men’s Golf To 2nd Place In Olivet Fall Classic By Nicholas Huenefeld Battle Creek, MI---The Express men’s golf team was led by Blaze Hogan and Brandon Hoelzer as the team took home second place in the Olivet Fall Golf Classic on Saturday. Indiana Wesleyan University won the 15-team event with a team score of 582, 18 shots better than the 600 for the Express. Hogan and Hoezler each shot a 149, while Luke Berger had a 150. Darren Gessner added a 152 and Timothy Dawkins had a 158. Individual golf scores for the Express included Jason Glass (149) and Walter Dorosh (153). The score from Glass put him among the top 10 lowest scores in the Classic. The round scores were as follows: Hoelzer: 75-74-149 Hogan: 77-72-149 Berger: 78-72-150 Gessner: 75-77-152 Dawkins: 79-79-158 Glass: 75-75-149 Dorosh: 77-76-153

Express Golf Finishes 21 Strokes Ahead Of Next Closest Team To Capture Lalaeff Memorial Invite By Nicholas Huenefeld Hammond, IN---The Express golf team destroyed the competition by taking first place in the Mike Lalaeff Memorial Invite yesterday. They finished with a two-day team score of 628, which was 21 shots better than second place Purdue Calumet. Freshman Blaze Hogan finished with the lowest overall score (76-73-149) as the next closest was Purdue-Calumet’s Tyler Nicol (76-77-153). Luke Berger (74-82-156) to finish in a tie for third place, while Timothy Dawkins (81-76-157) finished tied for fifth. Berger had the lowest overall score through the event’s first day. Other Express golf scores included Darren Gessner (87-77164, T-14th), Jason Glass (79-87-166, T-19th), and Brandon Hoelzer (87-80-167, 21st).

The Lalaeff Invite was the second fall tourney the Express has participated in this year. They finished in second place at the Olivet College Invitational on Sept. 1.

Express Golf Wins Trine’s Ken Venturi Invitational In Ryder Cup Format By Nicholas Huenefeld Angola, IN---The Express men’s golf team continued to rack up the accolades this weekend as they took first place in the Ken Venturi Invitational at Trine University. The win marks their third tournament win in four events, although one was cut short due to rain. They finished second in their other invitational. “This is a wonderful accomplishment,” said Express head golf coach Josh Williams. “We haven’t even played any junior colleges yet. We’ve beaten NCAA D-I, D-II, D-III, as well as NAIA D-I’s.” The team shot a 193 - 20 under par, which was 10 strokes better than Trine’s A team in second place. Since the inception of Trine’s Invitational, no team has shot better or equaled the 20 under par finish Owens achieved this year.

The event was a Ryder Cup format in which holes 1-6 was scramble, 7-12 was best ball, and 13-18 was alternate shot. The pairings for the Express were Timothy Dawkins and Blaze Hogan, Darren Gessner and Luke Berger, and Jason Glass and Brandon Hoelzer. Glass and Hoelzer took home lowest scoring duo in the competition with an eight under 63. The other two groups each shot a 65 (-6). Gessner and Berger took home the lowest score in the Alternate Shot round. Dawkins and Glass Finish In Top Three, Express Golf Team Rolls To First Place In IU East Waterfront Classic By Nicholas Huenefeld
Liberty, IN---The Express golf team continued to roll with a first place finish in the six-team IU East Waterfront Classic on Thursday. The Express shot a 302, which was 16 shots better than second place finisher Columbus State Community College. Indiana University East finished third with a 320, while Cincinnati State Community College shot a 334. Berea College (369) and Cincinnati Christian University (369) also competed. It was the third straight tournament win for the Express, which is a non-conference first for the program.

Five Express golfers finished in the top eight, including two in the top three. Timothy Dawkins (73) finished in second place, while Jason Glass (74) finished third. Blaze Hogan (77, T-5th), Darren Gessner (78, 7th), and Walter Dorosh (79, 8th) also finished in the top eight. Luke Berger shot an 83 to finish in 14th place. Ash Alstadt of Columbus State shot a tournament best 70. The course had a par of 72.
Express Freshmen Class Ranked Fourth Among All NJCAA D-II Teams According to GolfStat.com, the Express golf team currently has the fourth best NJCAA D-II freshmen class in the nation. The freshmen class consists of Dawkins, Glass, Brandon Hoelzer, and Hogan. Among all NJCAA schools, the Express are ranked 16th.

Guerrero Memorial Tournament at Belmont Country Club today. Hoelzer shot a 75 to finish just ahead of teammate Walter Dorosh (76). Moreover, of the five players who shot under 80, three came from Owens as Darren Gessner added a 77. The Owens “A” team had the lowest score among all teams with a 315. The team consisted of Hoelzer, Gessner, Blaze Hogan (80), Timothy Dawkins (83) and Luke Berger (84). Columbus State Community College, led by Alstadt, finished second overall with a 329. The Owens “B” team finished third with a 336. That team consisted of Dorosh, Jason Glass (81), Alex Roberts (88) and Riley Robinson (91).

Tiffin University finished fourth (338), Cincinnati State Technical and Community College finished fifth (347) and Indiana University East finished sixth (354). Lakeland Community College and Lorain County Community College tied for seventh (357). The tournament win marks the fourth consecutive for the Express. It could have been five had the Defiance College Invitational not been rained out - even though the Express golfers had finished each of their 18 holes. The Express are one match win short of tying the 2007-08 team for most consecutive match wins in the regular season.

In the spring of 2007, the Express set an overall match winning streak record when they won six consecutive tournaments including the OCCAC Championships and the NJCAA SubRegional.

Express Golf Beats Three NCAA D-I Schools In UD Fall Invitational By Nicholas Huenefeld

Dayton, OH---The Express golf team finished 15th out of 18 teams in the University of Dayton Fall Invitational, but they were the only junior college school in the field, while all others were NCAA D-I.
Hoelzer’s second day 72 was tied for 8th place among all second day scores.
The Express shot a two-day total of 616 (310-306) to finish ahead of Butler University (617), Robert Morris University (618) and Chicago State University (752). The 616 total was also very close to some schools ahead of them including: Evansville University (613), BGSU (612), Ohio University (610), IUPUI (610) and Northern Kentucky University (609). Thus, the Express finished seven strokes off the top 10 in a field of NCAA D-I schools.
Nick Cunningham of Oakland University finished the tournament with a two-under 140 to take home first place.
Oakland University won the tournament with a 578 score, while IPFW finished second with a 588.
The Express are now finished with their fall season. Aside from the UD Fall Invitational, the Express took home four first place trophies, while finishing second in their other tourney.

No. 7 Express Golf Dominates Spring Break Tournament By Nicholas Huenefeld Myrtle Beach, SC---The No. 7 Express golf team captured first place in the Marywood University Quad Tournament during their spring break trip to Myrtle Beach. The Express finished with a team score of 325 to beat St. Mary’s (MN), who shot a 336 in second place. Marywood University (347) and Elizabethtown College (389) finished in third and fourth place. Four Express golfers finished in the top seven, while five placed in the top 11. Jason Glass and Blaze Hogan each shot an 80 to finish in a tie for third place, while Timothy Dawkins (82) and Darren Gessner (83) finished in sixth and seventh place. Brandon Hoelzer (88) tied for 11th place. The tournament used a top five scoring system, so other golfers for the Express competed but didn’t place. Those included: Luke Berger (78), Walter Dorosh (79), Roley Robinson (81) and Alex Roberts (82).

No. 8 Express Golf Dominates First Two OCCAC Tournaments By Nicholas Huenefeld Cincinnati, OH---The No. 8 Express golf team captured two tournament championships in OCCAC play over the last two days to take early control of the conference standings. On Thursday, Blaze Hogan shot a 3-under 69 to capture first place individually, while the Express placed four golfers in the top five individual finishers. Darren Gessner and Brandon Hoelzer each shot a 2-under 70 to tie Columbus State’s Ash Alstadt for second place, while Timothy Dawkins shot a 75 to tie for fifth. Other scores for the Express on Thursday included Luke Berger (77), Jason Glass (80) and Riley Robinson (81). Hogan, Gessner and Hoelzer combined to shoot seven under par. As a team, the Express had a score of 284, which was 13 shots better than second place Columbus State (297). Lakeland (313), Cincinnati State (314) and Lorain County (344) rounded out the team scores. On Friday, the Express impressed some more with a team score of 292, which was 20 shots better than second place Columbus State (312). Lakeland (324), Cincinnati State (33) and Lorain County (344) rounded out the team scores in day two.
As a team, the Express shot even par over the past two days. Gessner and Hoelzer’s two-day averages of 72 lead the OCCAC, while Hogan’s two-day average of 73 is third best. Berger and Columbus State’s Alstadt are tied at 74, while Dawkins’ 74 is tied for sixth. The 76.5 average for Glass gives the Express six players in the top eight of the OCCAC individual standings.
Notes In the OCCAC, teams are awarded points based on finish in each conference event starting with a high score of five and a low score of one. Thus, the Express have 10 points, while Columbus State has eight, Lakeland has six, Cincinnati State has four and Lorain County has two. The event on Thursday was held at Weatherwax Golf Course Woodside/Meadows, with a par of 72, while the event on Friday was also held at Weatherwax Golf Course - Valley View/Woodside - also a par of 72. The next action for the Express will be April 21 in the Columbus State Invitational. The event will be held at North Star Golf Course/Bent Tree Golf Club in Columbus, OH. Since the beginning of fall season, the Express have participated in nine invitationals/tournaments. Of those nine, they have seven first place finishes, one second place finish and one 15th place finish. Their lone non-top two finish came in a tournament where they were the only NJCAA school and were competing against NCAA D-I schools
Berger led the way on Friday with a 1-under par 71, while Glass (73), Gessner (74), Hoelzer (74), Dawkins (75), Hogan (77) and Robinson (87) contributed to the successful day.

Hoelzer, Dawkins Shoot 76, Express Golf Captures Third Straight OCCAC Tournament By Nicholas Huenefeld Columbus, OH---Brandon Hoelzer and Timothy Dawkins led the No. 8 Express golf team to their third straight OCCAC tournament victory with a first place finish in the Columbus State Invitational at Bent Tree Golf Club today. Ash Alstadt of Columbus State shot a 73 to take home first place honors individually, but Hoelzer and Dawkins finished tied for second. As a team, the Express shot a 308, 11 shots better than second place Columbus State (319). Cincinnati State (327), Lakeland (338) and Lorain County (355) finished 3-5. Every golfer for the Express shot 79 or better today except Darren Gessner, who was close with an 81. Other Express finishers were: Luke Berger and Blaze Hogan (78, T-6th), Walter Dorosh (79) and Jason Glass (84). The win helps the Express strengthen their hold on first place in the OCCAC standings. Through three tournaments, the Express has 15 points, while Columbus State has 12, Lakeland has eight, Cincinnati State has seven and Lorain County has three. The Express will next play in the Trine University Invitational on April 27 at Zollner Golf Course in Angola, IN. Action begins at 12 p.m.

Berger Leads No. 2 Express Golf To Championship At Trine Invitational By Nicholas Huenefeld Angola, IN---The Express golf team vaulted to No. 2 in the nation earlier this week. Today, Luke Berger and the rest of his teammates showed the ranking isn’t a fluke with another first place finish in the Bill Gettig Invitational at Trine University’s Zollner Golf Course. The Express shot a 290 to finish 11 strokes ahead of Alma College. Olivet College (306), Trine University (307) and Calumet College (307) rounded out the top five. Berger shot a team and tournament best 70. Calumet College’s Tyler Nicol also shot a 70 to tie Berger. Blaze Hogan (72), Brandon Hoelzer (74), Walter Dorosh (74) and Timothy Dawkins (76) rounded out the scoring for the Express in their top five. As individuals, Darren Gessner shot a 73 and Jason Glass shot a 79. Thus, all Express golfers shot a 79 or better.

Hoelzer’s 73 Helps No. 2 Express Win Fourth Straight OCCAC Tournament Title By Nicholas Huenefeld/Owens Sports Information Elyria, OH---Brandon Hoelzer’s one over par 73 helped the No. 2 Express golf team capture a first place finish amid rainy and wet conditions in the Lorain County Invitational on Sunday. The Express shot 304 as a team, while Columbus State (316), Cincinnati State (320), Lakeland (331) and Lorain County (339) finished two through five. Hoelzer’s effort also helped him take home first place honors individually. His next closest competitor was his own teammate, Darren Gessner, who shot a 75 for second place. No. 2 Express Golf Captures Lakeland Invitational, Clinches OCCAC Championship By Nicholas Huenefeld/Owens Sports Information Concord, OH---The No. 2 Express golf team clinched the OCCAC championship today with a first place finish in the Lakeland Invitational at Little Mountain Golf Course. The victory marks the fifth straight OCCAC tournament championship for the Express this year. Today marked the closest victory of the five. The Express shot a 300 as a team, five shots better than Columbus State. Cincinnati State (309), Lakeland (324) and Lorain County (345) rounded out the five team field. Ash Alstadt of Columbus State and Matt Nickoson of Cincinnati State each shot a 72 to take home first place individually. The Express was led by Darren Gessner, who shot a 73 to tie for third place, while Jason Glass (74) finished just behind him, Brandon Hoelzer (75), Blaze Hogan (76), Luke Berger (76) and Walter Dorosh (77) finished in seventh through 10th place.

Dorosh Leads No. 2 Express Golf To Undefeated OCCAC Season By Nicholas Huenefeld/Owens Sports Information Toledo, OH---Walter Dorosh shot a 73 amid windy conditions to lead the No. 2 Express men’s golf team to a first place finish at the Owens Invitational at Belmont Country Club today. The victory gives the Express a first place finish in all six OCCAC tournaments this year. Dorosh’s 73 was one stroke short of first place, which went to Columbus State’s Ash Alstadt and his 72. Dorosh’s teammate, Brandon Hoelzer, shot a 73 to finish in third place, while Blaze Hogan’s 79 put him in fifth place. Darren Gessner and Luke Berger each shot 80 and finished tied for seventh place, while Riley Robinson’s 83 put him in ninth place. Jason Glass tied for 10th place with an 84. Alex Roberts (89) and Timothy Dawkins (90) also helped the Express effort.

The pairing of Brandon Hoelzer and Walter Dorosh captured the Alternate Shot competition with a nine-hole score of 35, the pairing of Darren Gessner and Luke Berger won the Best Ball competition with a nine-hole score of 31, and the pairing of Blaze Hogan and Timothy Dawkins shot a nine-hole 33 to win the Scramble competition.
The OCCAC Ryder Cup is a tournament that doesn’t count in the OCCAC standings and it’s just a fun way to close out the regular season before the teams head off to regionals.
The Scramble came down to a playoff between Hogan/ Dawkins and Cincinnati State’s Matt Nickoson and Austin Kyle.

No. 3 Express Golf Headed To Nationals After Dominating Region XII Tournament By Nicholas Huenefeld/Owens Sports Information Battle Creek, MI---The No. 3 Express men’s golf team breezed through the competition at the two-day, 72 hole Region XII golf tournament to qualify for a trip to the NJCAA D-II National Tournament. They remain undefeated against NJCAA competition since the beginning of the fall season. The Express shot a team score of 299-288-297 to finish with an 884, which was 32 shots better than second place Muskegon Community College, who also qualified for nationals. Grand Rapids Community College (924), Columbus State Community College (925) and Jackson Community College (926) rounded out the top five. The tournament consisted of 10 teams. Brandon Hoelzer (75-69-75) and Walter Dorosh (72-73-73) both tied at 218 through 72 holes, which put them tied for first place. Following a one hole playoff, in which Hoelzer picked up a birdie, the tie was broken.
Luke Berger shot a 76-77-74 (227) for seventh place and Darren Gessner shot a 78-73-78 (229) for eighth place. Muskegon’s Caleb Johnson shot 74-73-73 for a 220 and third place, while Ash Alstadt of Columbus State (77-73-72, 222) and Nolan Maezes of Jackson (77-73-74, 224) finished third-fifth. Timothy Dawkins shot an 80-78-78 for a two-day total of 236 to finish tied for 21st place. After Owens and Muskegon qualified as teams, the top five individuals not on those teams also qualified for nationals. Those players were Alstadt, Maezes, Kory Roberts of Grand Rapids Community College, Jon Walraven of Mott Community College and Gabe Schiller of Mott Community College. Walraven and Schiller won a two-hole playoff with Jackson’s Connor Talbert to earn the final two spots. The tournament was held at Bedford Valley Golf Course, with a par of 72. While 10 teams participated, 64 individuals also played.
Aside from those two, three other Express golfers finished in the top eight. Blaze Hogan shot a 77-73-75 (224) for sixth place,

Hoelzer Captures All-American Honors As No. 3 Express Golf Finishes 10th At Nationals By Nicholas Huenefeld/Owens Sports Information Scottsboro, AL---The No. 3 Express golf team struggled in their final round of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) D-II National Tournament, but finished a successful season with a 10th place finish, which ties the best finish in program history (2008).
Notes Hoelzer was named an NJCAA D-II Honorable Mention AllAmerican following the conclusion of the tournament for his 25th place finish. He becomes only the second Express golfer to achieve All-American honors, following Joey Bussdieker’s Honorable Mention All-American year in 2007-08.
The Express shot a final round 311 (+23) today and finished with a four-round total of 1,197 (+45). After the second round, the team was just +3 as a team, but shot a combined 618 over the past two days - compared to 579 over the first two days.
The Express golf team closed, perhaps, the most successful season in program history today. Prior to the national tournament, they had not lost to a junior college team all year. Additionally, they captured the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) title by sweeping every OCCAC tournament. They also achieved the program’s highest ranking in the NJCAA D-II National Poll at No. 3.
Darren Gessner closed out his final day for the Express as the team’s low scorer at 75 (+3). Other Express scores included: Walter Dorosh (78, +6), Brandon Hoelzer (79, +7), Blaze Hogan (79, +7) and Luke Berger (80, +8).
No. 1 South Mountain (AZ) Community College captured their second straight national title with four-day total of 1,139 (-13). Walters State (TN) Community College (1,171, +19) and John A. Logan (IL) College (1,183, +31) finished second and third.
For the tournament, Hoelzer led the Express with a 294 (+6) finish. He tied for 25th place. Other scores were: Berger (299, +11, t-35th), Gessner (304, +16, t-57th), Hogan (304, +16, t-57th) and Dorosh (310, +22, t-77th).
David Keenan of Parkland (IL) College captured the individual national championship with a four-day total of 280 (-8).
As a team, the Express finished with scores of 298-281-307-311. Their second round score broke a program record for lowest 18 hole score.

OWENS EXPRESS Men’s golf Golf Assists Express Athletics In Completing Most Successful Year In School History By Geoff Roberts/Nicholas Huenefeld/ Owens Sports Information Express golf earned one of a schoolrecord four OCCAC titles in 2012-13 en route to giving Owens its strongest athletic year of all-time. Those accomplishments tied the college’s record for most OCCAC titles in one year and broke the record for most national tournament appearances in one year.
Freshman Brandon Hoelzer earned First Team All-OCCAC, First Team All-Region XII, Region XII Player of the Year, Ping Honorable Mention AllAmerican and NJCAA D-II Honorable Mention All-American honors. Aside from Hoelzer, six other Express golfers earned All-OCCAC honors including Darren Gessner (First Team), Blaze Hogan (First Team), Luke Berger (First Team), Walter Dorosh (Second Team), Jason Glass (Second Team) and Timothy Dawkins (Second Team). First-year head coach Josh Williams was named OCCAC Coach of the Year and Region XII Coach of the Year.
The Express men’s golf team closed out the 2012-13 Express athleticsyear in strong fashion for Owens.
Four players aside from Hoelzer also earned First Team All-Region XII honors including Dorosh, Hogan, Berger and Gessner.
They won 12 regular season tournament championships, were undefeated in OCCAC play, captured the Sub-Region XII and Region XII tournament championships and finished in 10th place at the NJCAA D-II National Tournament.
Academically, Berger (3.76 GPA) and Alex Roberts (3.64 GPA) were awarded Exemplary Academic Achievement honors by the NJCAA, while those two also made the All-OCCAC Academic Team.

Last season, Williams guided the Express to one of the best seasons in program history. After capturing 12 regular season tournament championships, including first place in every OCCAC tournament, the team won the OCCAC regular season championship, the OCCAC Ryder Cup championship, the SubRegion XII championship, the Region XII championship and finished 10th at the NJCAA D-II National Tournament. Under the direction of Williams, freshman Brandon Hoelzer was named Region XII Player of the Year and was an NJCAA D-II Honorable Mention All-American. Additionally, a total of seven players earned All-OCCAC honors, and Williams was named OCCAC Coach of the Year and Region XII Coach of the Year. Williams also saw four of his players earn First Team All-Region XII honors. Academically, two of his players earned Academic AllOCCAC honors, as well as NJCAA Exemplary Academic Achievement honors.

Williams still holds the program record for lowest nine hole score (30). Following his playing career, Williams took over as an assistant coach with the program, and he held that position for five seasons. Williams, who also served as an assistant coach for the Express men’s basketball program in 2011-12, has previously served as the head varsity boys basketball coach at North Baltimore High School, where he compiled a 43-19 record from 2008-11. Additionally, Williams has held freshmen and varsity assistant coaching positions at Toledo Start High School. As the freshmen coach, he led the team to a Toledo City League runner-up finish. The Perrysburg resident serves as the Vice President of Operations at Lakeland Golf Course in Fostoria, and he also teaches golf lessons at Maumee Sports Mall. For five years, he taught Health and Physical Education classes as an adjunct faculty member for Owens. Williams is currently working towards a degree in sport management and athletic administration from Ashford University.
Despite this only being his second year with the head coaching position, Williams has been a member of the Express golf program since its inception in 2005-06. During his two years as a student-athlete with the team from 2005-07, Williams was a First Team All-OCCAC selection, an NJCAA D-II Sub Regional Medalist, a team captain, a Coaches Award recipient, and was part of the 2005-06 NJCAA D-II National Tournament qualifying team, where he finished 114th individually.

Ryan Brown is entering his second season as an assistant coach in the Express men’s golf program. Last season, Brown helped the Express to a 10th place finish at the NJCAA D-II National Tournament. Along the way, the team had perhaps its best season in program history as they captured the OCCAC championship, the OCCAC Ryder Cup championship, the Sub-Region XII tournament championship and the Region XII championship. It was the program’s first Region XII tournament title. The team also won every OCCAC tournament. The Temperance, Mich. native golfed for the Express from 2006-2008.
