Since High School, I have shown great interest in multimedia design. On the side of studying Architectural Drafting in the Laguna State Polytechnic University (2011-2015), I immersed myself with multimedia design through extensively reading and studying available online resources - from online short courses to video tutorials and manuals. In that span of time, I’ve had a considerable numaber of personal and freelance collaborative projects. My career path as a CAD Operator until late 2015 would later on change, permanently redirecting me to multimedia designing. For two years now, I am the resident multimedia editor (film editor and graphics designer) of Pleasant Dreams Production, a film production outfit of local film director Dennis Empalmado. Meanwhile, my other stints include being the on-call multimedia artist for an arts and culture online magazine called Art in Site; and for six months, the Social Media Manager – Multimedia Editor of Sulyap Restaurant. My line of work includes producing and editing films and videos, print layout, illustrations, animation, 3D graphics, typography and posters.

SineUna

2017- 2019

Pleasant Dreams Production and Sulyap sa Nakaraan Foundation present SineUna, a free film screening event every last Saturday of the month held at Sulyap Gallery Cafe and Restaurant, featuring a selection of classical films from French New Wave Cinema to Pinoi B Movies taken from the list of Jerico Torres, Glenn Cruz, and Dennis Empalmado. SineUna, as a film community initiative, also holds regular film screenings of independent films from known local and national filmmakers. One of which is called SineKalye which aims to screen and tour films of filmmakers like Lav Diaz and Rox Lee in different Philippine communities.

Purple was chosen to evoke nostalgia towards old films for both the old and younger audiences. Image was from Pelikula: An Essay on the Philippine Film:1897-1960 by Agustin L. Sotto; Tatlong Maria (1944)

A 5-Day Basic Filmmaking Workshop (formerly known as GKN PKN) A basic filmmaking workshop series by instructor Dennis Empalmado that aims to educate and workshop film enthusiasts in Laguna, and ultimately form a group of filmmakers in the province that will cultivate a regional culture of filmmaking.

The Batch 4 poster roots on the theme of comparative development, showing the progression of old to modern cameras since the workshop series was previously called Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon. The Batch 5 poster incorporates different film elements and equipment in a mood board. With this poster, I tinkered and played with the idea of a film project mood board.

[1] The Batch 6 poster (found below), and a gif file (part of the whole filmmaking process visual abstraction), makes use of a minimalist layout that highlights an abstraction of the concept of filmmaking process. Special assets were designed to visualize specific sections of filmmaking. [2] The Batch 6 poster (top right), was the official poster for the said batch of filmmaking workshop. The poster, having a Franรงois Truffaut line art, alludes to a simpler and more toned down design so more people can easily grasp its contents. This served as the template layout for the succeeding batches of workshop.

The poster on the right is the first promotional material made for the rebranding of the filmmaking workshop, previously known as GKN PKN. The design took inspiration from a helix, derived from the Helical Model of Communication which theorizes that the process of communication, much like the information given in the workshop, is evolutionary.

Panganay sa Pito (2017)

Jones (2018) A short experimental film about a fire hydrant, a busy sidewalk nestled between an electrical post and a building.

A documentary film about a lake told by the people around it.

Rooted from the idea that the film is experimental. Images and colors were freely used and blended to create a distinct design. The images used: fire hydrant, sidewalk, electrical post and a building, were chosen because they were the recurring objects in the entirety of the film.

Patterned from one of the film’s main themes of a peaceful lake before the onslaught of changes. The image used here was also the title card in the film. Image by Dennis Empalmado

At Kung Abutin ng Dilim (2018)

War Baby (2019) A documentary about Duewand Collier, Male, 68 years old, American Citizen, a child conceived in the backdrop of the Philippines-American Mutual Defense Treaty, born and raised with Catholic guilt. He has made peace with his past and now tells his story—a story of love.

As Angelo and his friends struggle to find self validation through music and art, his growing obsession with Lelay – a young cashier drives him to withdraw from reality. Inspired from New Order’s Low-Life album, specifically observed in the layout of the texts. This choice was influenced by the film’s theme of ‘punk’ music and persona. The image used comes from the perspective and obsession of Angelo (protagonist) towards Lelay (subject).

The display type for WAR BABY was designed to mimic WWII’s era and the image used here was from Duewand’s own photo album.

Bean Tower Coffee Established in 2019, Bean Tower Coffee is a San Pablo City-based coffee shop business that provides a cozy place to discuss and interact and offer local and international coffee beans exported from different places. Bean Tower Coffee, serves a unique, strong and bold coffee flavors, inspired by the vibrant and world-renowned Melbourne coffee culture. A business partner of Bean Tower Coffee approached me around the second quarter of 2019 and asked me to work on their logo for their new coffee shop business. In a span of 2 weeks, I worked closely with Roy Empalmado and Vic Viray to help them reach their vision for this project. Symbol.

Dark Brown, represents the color of the earth that is comforting and nurturing. A warm color that stimulates the appetite and provides feelings of connection, dependability, and stability.

Hudson Yards Consulting Inc. Established in 2016, Hudson Yards Consulting Inc. (HYC) is a Quezon City-based business consulting firm that provides business consultancy services to foreign and local companies.

The monogram consists of an overlapping letters of ‘H’ and ‘Y’. The ‘H’ resembles a fence for protection and safety, also viewed as a train track to highlight a process of bringing clients to their desired destinations. While the ‘Y’ echoes a symbol for a network, a tree branching out for ‘connection’. The monogram viewed as a whole looks like a sturdy building, suggestive of the company’s mission to support different businesses and clients. Monogram.

Spectral Semibold, a serif font, provides a sense of tradition and security. It gives an impression to people that it is worthy of their attention and trust.

Montserrat Light, a sans serif font, suggests a less traditional yet neat and simple font. It also adds a contemporary style and familiarity to the brand.

A sequence in the film shows the main characters watching a video clip of a certain band’s performance. This specific scene also introduces the audience to “Fleshtomb”, a death metal band where one of the main characters was formerly a member of. For this, I had the creative freedom to design the band’s logo. My process creating it involved sketching the logo on paper then scanning it to trace and vectorize using Illustrator. Similarly with Fleshtomb, I had the creative freedom to design the logo for “Kapload”. Kapload is a shortened version or portmanteau of Kapitan Upload, a made-up music streaming platform where musicians upload their music and earn profits through ads.

The idea behind the icon of Kapload was a play button with a hat (salakot) inside and for the texture - sound waves. As for the font, Aleo Regular, a slab serif font was chosen because it provides a sense of stability and trust. 26

Tri-moo Shawarma Shop

2018

Is a local Shawarma shop established in San Pablo City; they started operating as a stall in San Pablo’s Night Market, now they have their own shops around San Pablo City. The original logo had aesthetic problems from having too much or noisy details including the font style used. It missed out on deriving a more playful yet simplistic design that can be derived from the shop’s name, to potentially help in its branding and marketability. Below is the original logo and on the following page are the three logo concepts I created for Tri-Moo Shawarma Shop.

36 Days of Type The 36 Days of Type is a campaign project that challenges Designers, Illustrators and Graphic Artists to create their own distinct designs on numbers and letters of the English alphabet. Since it was my first time participating in 2017 (Batch 4), my goal was to explore and experiment on different design styles for every character. Here is a selection from my work that I submitted. I sketched it on paper, scanned it, cleaned it on Photoshop, and then vectorized it on Illustrator.

This was inspired by Gerry Alanguilan’s “Ang Alamat ng Sampalok Lake” title text in his upcoming graphic novel. Same process I did on “Sampaloc Lake, 1930’s”, I sketched it on paper first, scanned it, and then vectorized it on Illustrator.

Sulyap Gallery CafĂŠ, Boutique Hotels, and Restaurant Is a premier destination for both local and foreign tourists visiting San Pablo City, Laguna. It is most known for its tasty traditional and modern Filipino Cuisine and its historical Antillan Architectures. Aside from serving as a Social Media Manager assigned for online multimedia design, I also created stationaries, business cards and design templates. 37
