Community Building LIBRARY | BICYCLE REPAIR | CAFE | GALLERY
An urban micro-institution: multifunctional community building located in a residential area of midtown Toronto. The three-storey building consists of a library, bicycle repair shop, cafe and gallery. The ground floor is for mostly public and commercial while the library occupies the second and third floor. Location: St. Clair Ave & Westmount Ave. Library Scale: 24000 books Floor Area: 1050 SQ. Metres Completed: March 2017.

Parti and Concept: The main parti of the design is about circular circulation around the central atrium and lighting of the library space. A lot of time have been dedicated to the design of natural lighting which is an essential element of a library.

Because of the buildings next to the site, a setback of 3.4 meters is legally required for both sides, the circulation of the bicycle repair shop at the back of site makes full use of the setback spaces.

Harbourfront Dragon Pavilion
Collaborated with Courtney Lee and Alife Frebrian.
The Harbourfront Dragon is inspired by the Greek architectural concept of Stoa, where products and goods are being sold there, the space is also a place for people to communicate and exchange ideas. This design hopes to simulate that concept by spanning the boardwalk along the Toronto Harbourfront as well as the open grass space besides it, uniting the spaces under one roof to promote use and bring people together as they walk beneath it, rest at the benches, or peruse the marketplaces that may pop up from time to time. Completed: April 2017.

Site: The project is located along the boardwalk of Harbourfront Square Park, in Downtown Toronto, beside the economic and commercial center of the city, surrounded by highrise skyscrapers with a relativity high density of population. The space is a retreat from the urban environment and provides a nice place for people to relax.
The Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is being ranked as the ninth busiest airport in Canada, arriving airplanes will be flying passby above the water in front of the lakeshore. A lot of people would be spending an afternoon sitting on the bench and watch the airplanes flying, the high structure of the project does not obstruct the view to the airplane. The frosted glass doesn’t over isolate people from the natural environment and meanwhile protecting people from precipitation and reduces the intensity of sunlight, filters out UV light.

This rendition of a serpentine pavilion was designed with the intent of creating a form made up of two distinct elements assembled together. The prefabricated circular-hollow-section-steel canopy unit is rotated with each module to create a flowing, crystalline form that “flies� through a passageway of repeating, russet arches. Steel canopy supports are kept discreet in favour of a delicate-looking cable support system, contributing to the funky, lightweight-feeling articulation that contrasts the more solid arches.

Geoscience Research Center Collaborated with Elizabeth Yeoh.
The research centre is designed for two geologists performing research on the geology surrounding the Susitna River, in Anchorage, Alaska. As a popular summer recreation and tourist destination, the river banks are prone to future erosion. Their work is based on the assessment of the land to prevent potential damage. The proposed design offers the researchers a well-conditioned environment to perform their study and feel grounded in the beautiful Alaskan landscape. Completed: April 2017.

Site and Location: Anchorage belongs to the subarctic climate zone, implying a short, cool summer season. Being of a high latitude, it has long daylight hours in the summer and short ones in the winter. It is vital to maximize the quantity of solar heat from the winter months. The temperature falls below comfort zone except when it peaks during the summer. The area experiences moderate temperatures during the summer season, with a high of 24°C being produced during August. In the winter season, the lowest average temperatures fall below 10°C.

Based on the typology of a wood cabin, the project aims provide shelter from the elements, without severing the dialogue between natural and man-made habitat.The research centre’s program is organized such that the work space faces the south glazed façade. Being the most used area in the building, it requires the most daylight and heating. The living and sleeping quarters also face the forest and river. The services are located on the north side of the building, as they do not require as much daylight.

Structure and Construction: The strategy for the building’s structure is aimed at responding to the climatic conditions of the site. The design is compromised of light weight wood frame construction and concrete slab on grade foundation. To combat Alaska’s dominant cold, the wood frame walls and ceiling are reinforced with thick insulation, and the floor is a thermally massive concrete slab. The south façade is receptive to solar gain and daylighting. By contrast, the north façade is more heavily insulated, protecting the building from harsh north-western winds.

AIR TEMPERATURE: Indoor air temperature is maintained in a comfortable range by high-efficiency electrical furnace, whole house fan and geothermal heat pump.
The energy consumption per square feet is reduced to approximately 40% of conventional residential buildings.

Interior: The passive heating strategies are orienting the building to face the south for solar heat gain, using thermal mass on the floor and providing heavy insulation. The cooling strategies involve operable windows for natural ventilation, induced stack effect through the clerestory window, and overhang and vegetation shading.

Riverside Printmaking Studio A Printmaking studio designed for the purpose of both production and residential for a printmaking artist. The project is located at the riverbank of Grand River in the city of Cambridge, Ontario. A intractable retaining wall of 2.3 meters above grade runs across the centre of the site, parallel to the river. The two architectonic volumes sit above the retaining wall makes it unique. The residential area on the second floor was offseted away from the workshop, cantilievered over the river, not only isolated from the noise of workshop, but also have a good view over the river. Completed: December 2017

Gallery Space: Two gallery compartments are placed along the retaining wall. It not only provide spaces to display the work of the artist, but also creates a thresthold for the entrance and merges the structure with the retaining wall.

Prefabricated Apartment

A prefabricated compact apartment for student housing located in Cambridge, Ontario, it sits in a narrow site between a historical library and a commerical building. The apartment is consisted of four units designed to accommodate two students per unit. Completed: February 2017.
