After two days of balloting, 1,319 students from the Boca Raton campus voted in Student Government’s legislative election – almost double the amount of students who voted last year, Elections Chair Thomas Levy said. Boca Raton campus winners in the Senate were Ralph Landau and Michael Brown. College Panhellenic Association
The College Panhellenic Association (CPA) is the governing organization for the four traditional women’s sororities: Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Phi Epsilon, and Theta Phi Alpha. One of the major responsibilities of CPA is too coordinate, promote, and oversee the recruitment process for the organizations and potential members to participate in. In addition to recruitment, CPA will govern and advocate on behalf of the chapters and offer programming and resources to member chapters in the following areas: sisterhood, scholarship, leadership, and service throughout the year. The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is the governing organization for the seven traditional men’s fraternities: Alpha Epsilon Pi, Alpha Tau Omega, Beta Chi Theta, Delta Tau Delta, Phi Delta Theta, Pi Kappa Alpha, and Sigma Alpha Mu. IFC promotes and coordinates the recruitment process to help potential members gain access to the chapters, will govern and advocate on behalf of the chapters to the university, and offer support and programming throughout the year. Multicultural Greek Council
The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) is the governing organization for all the multicultural fraternities and sororities: Alpha Nu Omega Fraternity, Alpha Nu Omega Sorority, Alpha Psi Lambda Co-Ed Latin Fraternity, Lambda Theta Alpha, Lambda Theta Phi. Sigma Lambda Beta was recently approved to start this fall, but does not yet have any members. MGC is the main group that governs, advocates, and promotes its member organizations to the university community. National Pan-Hellenic Council Alpha Kappa Alpha Who we are: We are a group of women whose purpose is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of “Service to All Mankind.” What we’re known for: We’re mainly known for our community service on and off campus. Delta Sigma Theta Who we are: At the birth of Delta Sigma Theta in Jan. 13, 1913 at Howard University, 22 dynamic founders envisioned an organization of college women pledged to serious endeavors and community service. Our founders demonstrated a vital concern in the need for black women to be politically aware and involved. Today Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is the largest black women’s organization in the world with a membership that exceeds over 230,000 educated college women. As an organization, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has traditionally addressed the issues of the time. Our courageous founders were the only group of black women to participate in the Women’s Suffrage March on March 26, 1913.
Omega Psi Phi Who we are: Omega Psi Phi was founded at Howard University in Washington, DC, in 1911. The Cardinal Principle is Manhood Scholarship Perseverance Uplift. The Motto is “Friendship is Essential to the Soul”. The FAU chapter, Sigma Delta Delta, was founded Dec. 7, 1995. What we’re known for: On Campus we are known for our on our Annual Thanksgiving Grub. Our chapter holds an annual Thanksgiving Grub two days prior to Thanksgiving to serve the students, staff, and community who are unable to go home for the holidays. What happens after you join? FAU’s Greek Life Office will host its annual “So, Now What?” program for new members and seniors on Oct. 8. This workshop is for new members who have joined their organization after February 2010 and senior members who will be graduating in December 2010 or May 2011. The program offers students a chance to reflect on their experiences in their fraternity or sorority and decide either how to make your memories more impactful, or how to pursue alumni membership after you graduate. so how do I Go Greek, anyway? Here are nine helpful tips for navigating the recruitment process, straight from FAU’s Greek Life Office...

Public service, leadership development and education of youth are the hallmark of the organization’s programs and activities. Sigma Gamma Rho addresses concerns that impact society educationally, civically and economically. WHAT We’re KNoWN For: Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is known for coordinating events to involve, educate, and positively influence the student body as a whole. Some of our national programs include Project Reassurance, Buckle Up America, The March of Dimes, and Operation Big Book Bag. Be yourself
The recruitment/intake process can be intimating, but the best advice for potential members is the simplest: Be yourself. As weird as the process may feel, everyone is simply trying to get to know each other in a short time, so make sure you stay true to yourself in order to find your best fit.
Have genuine and honest conversations
Just as the fraternity and sorority members are trying to get to know you, you should be trying to get to know them as well. Make sure you’re talking about things that matter to you. Seek out real conversations and people you connect with, because those people are your potential brothers or sisters – and if the conversation is not there now, it most likely won’t be there once you get a bid of membership.

Meet as many people as you can and make real connections with them. This sounds like a lot of work but the chapters are meeting a lot of people throughout recruitment and you will want the most people possible to remember your name and face. Additionally, you will want to make sure that you like the people who are currently in the chapter, not just one or two members.
expose yourself to the chapter experience
Ask questions about what the chapter does. You will want to get a sense of what type of events the chapter is involved with, what they value, and what kind of things they hope their members will be a part of. Knowing these things ahead of time will help ensure that you are joining an organization that is similar to yourself and you know you will enjoy.
seek accurate information
You have a right to accurate information regarding the chapters. Make sure you visit the fraternity and sorority life website, www.fau.edu/greeklife and check out reports or chapter profile information provided. You can also stop by the Greek Life Office located in the Boca Raton Student Union, Room 218, if you have more unanswered questions.
look for the group where you feel most comfortable
At the end of the day, you should ask yourself: “Do I see myself as a member of this organization?” If you cannot answer that question with a yes, then it’s probably not the right choice. You will want to join the organization where you feel the most relaxed and comfortable.
Keep an open mind
Again, the recruitment/intake process can be very a strange and unsettling experience, but it is good advice to simply keep an open mind. There are a lot of rumors and falsehoods surrounding fraternities and sororities and it’s in your best interest to make your own firsthand assessment.
Trust the process
At the Greek Life Office, we believe this is the perfect phrase for the recruitment/intake process. What is supposed to happen for you always does. Don’t get too caught up in the day-to-day aspects, just make sure you complete the whole process. A word on hazing from FAU’s Greek Life Office Hazing of active or new members is illegal and forbidden. Hazing is defined as any act that endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a person, embarrasses, frightens, or degrades a person or which destroys or removes public/ private property, for the purpose of initiation, admission into, or affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership, in a group, organization/team. The expressed or implied consent of the alleged person against whom the actions have been taken will not be a defense. Apathy or acquiescence in the presence of hazing is not considered a neutral act; it is a contribution to the act of hazing. FAU expects that each chapter evaluate the mission and purpose of its new membership program to ensure it is making a positive contribution toward the development of new members. Any reported incident of hazing will result in an investigation and possible accountability proceedings by the University, Inter/national organization, and even local law enforcement. Simply put, zero-tolerance will be provided when it comes to the act of hazing. National Hazing Prevention Week
National Hazing Prevention Week (Sept. 27-Oct. 1) is a way to bring attention to the problem of hazing locally. The goal is to educate parents, faculty and staff, students, community members, and local and campus police so they can more easily recognize hazing and have the skills to intervene if hazing occurs. According to the Greek Life Office: “The ultimate goal of these efforts, however, is to prevent hazing from happening in the first place. That goal will only be accomplished through strong educational efforts, diligent policy enforcement and comprehensive and on-going efforts on each campus and within all organizations.” Here are the activities planned for FAU’s National Hazing Peevention Week... l Letter writing campaign to NFL & ESPN on the Breezeway 11-1 p.m. l Guest Bloggers on www.fau.edu/greeklife and “Greek Life @ FAU” Facebook page l Fraternity & Sorority Brown Bag debating hazing in professional sports at the Student Union Palmetto Palm Room, 12-1 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 28. l Wear your jersey or organizational T-shirt and anti-hazing button around campus to show your commitment to stop hazing.
