Known as the pearl of the Andaman Sea, Phuket is Thailand’s largest island (it is about 50km from north to south and 20km from east to west, roughly the same size as Singapore). This awe-inspiring province offers a profusion of natural delights — intensely turquoise water perfect for lazy dips, soft powder-white sand for leisurely strolls, soaring karst peaks to gawk at and forested mountains to explore. 호젓한 해변 푸껫은 활기 넘치는 명소로 가득하지만, 도시의 왁자지껄함에서 벗어나 마치 선계에 온 듯한 느낌을 주는 한적한 곳도 많다는 걸 아는 이는 드물다. 특히 서부 해안은 조용히 휴양을 즐기기에 안성맞춤인 장소다. 마이카오비치를 비롯한 일부 해안은 국립공원에 속해 있어 사람들의 발길이 거의 없는 편이다. 관광이나 레저를 즐기기엔 너무 멀어 사람들이 잘 찾지 않는 바나나비치 같은 해변도 외부와 차단되어 호젓함을 만끽할 수 있는 곳이다.
Hideaways and Hot spots There are plenty of areas pulsating with energy in Phuket, but there are also many isolated stretches of sand that are a world away from the frenzy of city life. The west coast is particularly abundant in hideaways. Some of these private beaches are part of a national park (for example, Mai Khao Beach) and not frequented by the masses, while others (such as Banana Beach) are too far from the action for most travelers, making for ultimate seclusion.
코끼리의 매력 까마득히 먼 옛날부터 코끼리는 타이 문화에 있어 중요한 역할을 해왔다. 현대에 들어 많은 것이 바뀌었지만 코끼리의 존재감은 여전하다. 왕권을 상징하는 흰 코끼리는 오랜 세월 불교 작품의 소재였을 뿐 아니라 시암 왕조 때에는 국기에도 등장했다. 오늘날 타이 관광산업에서도 코끼리는 비중 있는 역할을 하는데, 타이 최대 문화 공원인 판타시에서는 ‘애마’가 되어준다.
Enchanting Elephants Elephants have played a role in Thai culture for centuries. The white elephant signifies royal power, has been portrayed in Buddhist artwork for centuries and was even featured on the national flag back when Thailand was called Siam. Nowadays, tourism provides the bulk of work for these gentle giants, and Phuket FantaSea, Thailand’s largest cultural park, offers visitors the chance to get up close and personal with them.
섬과 바다 푸껫 섬 주변에 흩어져 있는 환초(環礁)는 마치 성역처럼 감춰둔 비밀스러운 장관을 엿볼 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. 그중 피피 군도는 환상적인 풍경으로 명성이 높은데, 흔히 ‘피피 섬’이라고 부르는 이곳이 여섯 개의 작은 섬으로 이뤄진 군도(群島)라는 사실을 아는 이는 많지 않다. 피피 군도 중 피피돈 섬에만 사람이 살며, 피피리 섬은 영화 <비치>에 등장해 유명해진 마야 만이 있는 곳이다. 나머지 섬 역시 그림 같은 풍경을 자아낸다.
Sand and Sea The many islands dotted around the main island of Phuket offer visitors the opportunity to explore secret sanctuaries. The Phi Phi Islands, a set of six islets, are the star of the show. Ko Phi Phi Don is the only one with villages on it, and Ko Phi Phi Lee is home to Maya Bay, the shoreline made famous in the movie The Beach. The others are simply picturesque landmasses jutting out of the glistening sea.

GETTING AROUND From Phuket International Airport, the easiest way to reach your resort is by taxi or hotel pick-up service. There are various options for getting around the main island. Local buses are bright blue and have the destination written in English (note that there do not seem to be timetables or designated stops); tuk-tuks (auto rickshaws) offer a quintessential Thailand travel experience; taxis generally cost only a fraction more. If you are planning to move around, renting a car is a practical option, and to explore the outlying islands, book a boat tour.

Because of its popularity, it is perpetually busy, so try to visit early in the morning or just before sunset to avoid most of the crowds.
