PEOPLE We are men and women of different backgrounds and with different political, religious and cultural views, unified by the same values of justice, human dignity, democracy, solidarity, commitment and sobriety. We strive to build a fairer and more united world that is free of poverty and injustice, where every person is able to fullfill his/her human rights and live in dignity within a peaceful, sustainable and unified society. We aim at strengthening the capacities belonging to vulnerable people and their communities in order to guarantee an equal and effective fulfillment of everyone’s human rights. Pietro Nibbi, Director There are 72 members, 208 workers and more than 150 volunteers, involved in raising awareness and promoting and managing communication and fund raising events. 2008 was a year of immense work and great satisfaction. Counting on the support of volunteers in Bologna, Florence, Pisa, Perugia, Rome, Milan, and the province of Arezzo as well as on new and expanding volunteer groups, seemed to be a dream not so long ago. It has now become a reality which has to keep on being nourished with commitment, enthusiasm and responsibility. Paolo Pezzati, Head of Volunteer and local groups office 2008 witnessed an increase in the number of private donors due to specific fundraising activities. 1,350 more people now believe in and support us, sharing our ideals and our hopes. Tania Salvi, Fund Raising office If I were to use a metaphor to let people understand my working experience I would use that of a journey. Despite having a relatively clear idea of where I wa going, as often happens on a journey, I have encountered detours, stops and starts, people, experiences, difficulties and enthusiasm which have not only let me create the the best path over time but have also allowed me to travel along it with a completely different baggage from the one I had when I set off. Anna dal Piaz, Citizenship Education office

ACTIONS AND TOOLS We work to guarantee that all people can have what they essentially need and that they can live peacefully with different cultures. We work to enhance local dimensions, promoting social inclusion as an answer to human needs of security and giving a voice to the weakest so that they can actively participate in their communities. Roberto Barbieri, Head of International Cooperation Having brought Oxfam into Italy has made Ucodep an important actor, investing time and resources and giving impulse to a platform such as the Global Coalition against Poverty as well as stimulating joint work both on concrete projects and on the important and difficult world of policy making. Ucodep is subsequently undergoing a smart growth period in terms of quality, which is, above all, consisitantly in line with its mission. I hope that in the near future we’re able to strengthen our perspectives and potentials for partnership. Laura Ciacci, Head of International Cooperation, general director WWF Italy The Annual Report, which has been published for some years now, is certainly a tool which makes a member like me feel part of a mature and responsible organization, that is attentive in reporting what has been done, how and why it has been done and, above all, how this is coherent with the association’s values and purpose. Bruna Giovannini, Ucodep member

2008: A YEAR TOGETHER 008: A YEAR TOGETHER JANUARY STRENGHTEN LOCAL COMMUNITIES
We continued supporting the Eastern Cape Province thanks to a three year project funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Tuscan Region, that facilitates the process of administrative decentralization in South Africa, consolidating the role of local institutions in democratic and peace building strategies, in the implementation of effective politics and services toward the fight against poverty and access to essential services. Stefania Spapperi, Head Sub Saharan African office
FEBRUARY HEALTH IN VIETNAM
Ucodep helped us to diversify crops with new kinds of fruit and vegetables which we had never produced: cabbage, courgettes, pears, pineapples and peaches. We therefore have many more vitamins in our diet and in our children’s diet and we can sell what we don’t eat at the market. Sung Thi Mai, Health promoter in the village of Sin Chai, municipality of Den Thang, district of Bat Xat, province of Lao Cai, Vietnam
MARCH HUMAN RIGHTS IN ITALY
Poverty is not a fatality, it has names and surnames, those who are responsible and those who are accomplices. The Italian coalition Social Watch is a network of organizations working to ask governments to respect the commitments which they proclaim in international venues. Ucodep is crucial within the coalition also thanks to the project, which it coordinates, called Promoting Social Development. This project aims at keeping public decision makers’ and society’s attention on these issues, so that no backtracking is made on human rights. Giulio Sensi, Policy and campaining, Mani Tese

APRIL LOCAL DEVELOPMENT IN CENTRAL AMERICA
We follow small red berries in Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, in the plantations of the coffee chain Cafè y cafè, the regional network which supports small coffee producers’ associations in Central American and the Caribbean, increasing the value of territories, products, and local cultures, and encouraging exchange and circulation of experiences among producers. Lorenzo Ridi, Central America and Brasil office
MAY SUSTAINABILITY AND DEVELOPMENT IN ITALY
For the G8 in Japan, we also celebrated the Tanabata festivity: participants at Terra Futura were invited to write on and hang small papers with their wishes on to the tanzaku bamboo branch, asking world leaders to keep their promise to give public development aid. Elisa Bacciotti, Oxfam international and Ucodep campaign office
JUNE SMALL SCALE PRODUCERS IN BOSNIA HERZEGOVINA
With the help of Ucodep and Slow Food we exhibited our cheese, which is produced “in a bag” during the most famous international fairs of traditional products, such as the Salone del gusto and Terra Madre in Turin. (The cheese produced “ in a bag” has hadan international Slow Food presidium since 2006). Miroslav Glogovac, Nevesinje, Bosnia Herzegovina, producer of the cheese “in a bag” and president of the new producers association “Cheese in a bag of Herzegovina”

2008: a year with us JULY CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION IN ITALY I have understood that educating my students about global citizenship issues is not an ideological action, but a political action, linked to cultural education. I feel that creating a network between teachers and educators, both at a national and international level, is of primary importance when circulating essential teaching strategies and materials in the global civilization which is emerging in an increasingly complex and diversified way. Rosaria, teacher in Arezzo at the first international seminar “Educating for Global Citizenship”, which involved more than 100 Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Maltese and Dominican Republic primary and secondary school teachers and educators.
AUGUST SMALL PRODUCERS IN BRASIL Partnership between Cofruta and Ucodep is fundamental for Cofruta and our members. Having bought agricultural machinery and having attended training and markets, we strengthened and stabilized the sales of Amazon products, which are mainly produced through family farming. We began with our first exports, training new young people who would have the possibility to get a respectable job within the cooperative, increasing the value of our local resources and conserving our environment. This is absolutely the first time that Cofruta is supported by such an international project initiative. Josenildo Costa da Silva, President of the Association Cofruta, Abaetetuba, Parà, Brasil
SEPTEMBER ITALY: WATER, HEALTH AND EDUCATION CAMPAIGN The squeaky clean face of Chris Martin and the melodic rock of his Coldplay. There could not have been a better setting for the opening event of the FOR ALL campaign, which Oxfam International and Ucodep launched before the G8, asking G8 leaders to ensure the six million teachers and health care providers needed to guarantee all people throughout the world with water, health and education. Coldplay have supported Oxfam’s work and campaigning around the world for many years and decided to mention Oxfam during all their concerts during their world tour “Viva la Vida”. Marco Bena, Ucodep’s volunteer at the Coldplay concert in Milan

OCTOBER WATER AND NATURAL RESOURCES IN ECUADOR Ucodep’s Ambi project helped us a lot to improve irrigation channels and to protect our water sources. An example? Only half of the water coming from Suarez Davila channel, which irrigates three communities (Chicapamba, Morales Chupa and Anrabi) manages to get to the fields. Today we have more water, sufficient for the crops’ needs and we are able to reforest the land with native species which are growing very well. Head of the irrigation committee of the community of Chilcapamba, Cotacachi, in the Province of Imbambura, Ecuador
NOVEMBER DECENTRALISED COOPERATION IN ITALY Two places, one bond. We celebrated a decade of the Arezzo Committee for Decentralised Cooperation for the Dominican Republic though people, projects, long distance adoptions and actions which tie Arezzo to this Caribbean land. Over the years we have strengthened coffee producers’ associations, supporting exports in international markets and thanks to fund raising activities through long distance adoptions and with donations from associations and companies in Arezzo, we have built wells and aqueducts which have brought drinking water to more than 50 schools, repaired the roofs of 12 schools, set up school vegetable gardens, secured a daily meal to hundreds of children by building three canteens and have guaranteed school children with all their required vaccinations. Roberto Barbieri, Coordinator of the Arezzo Committee for Decentralised Cooperation
DECEMBER EMERGENCY IN PALESTINE This war was the most recent episode of a very difficult situation, which the inhabitants of Gaza had to face, aggrevated by 20 months of isolation and economic embargo. Using our experience gained from the very start of the conflict in the West Bank in in the fields of counselling and food security, we managed to carry out emergency relief programs, thanks to our Palestinian partners and Oxfam International, planning post emergency actions to protect the weakest members of the population. Francesco Rigamonti, Mediterranean and Middle East Office
ANNUAL REPORT 2008
RESOURCES In 2008, our main donor was the Italian State, with 35% on the total revenue, mainly from funds allocated by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as the Ministry of Social Solidarity. The European Union continued to allocate a substantial percentage of funds, equalling 32% of the total revenue. Funding from European Union doubled compared to the previous year. Daniela Tavanti, Head of Secretarial and Administration The association’s revenue in its work in Italy, Europe and in countries in the Global South rose from 82% in 2007 to 86% in 2008. Massimo Catignano, Head of Accounting and Country Administration Office In 2008, Ucodep managed to carry out its work spending only 9.8% of the total revenue for structural costs and 1.6% for promotional and fund raising activities. 88.3% of the total revenue was directly allocated to associations direct activities. Federica Comanducci, Head of Research, Social Accountability and Quality Funds donated by the general public or by companies and foundations allow us to carry on and increase our commitment to the weakest in the world with continuity and independence. Donations allow us to plan our activities more effectively, responding to the most needy contexts and guaranteeing instant action in humanitarian emergencies. Elisabetta Gasperini, Head of Fund Raising
