T

he Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) is a non-governmental organisation which envisions societies that are peaceful, equal and free from violence. CSVR aims to understand and prevent violence, heal its effects and build sustainable peace at community, national and regional levels. We do this through collaboration with and learning from the lived and diverse experiences of communities affected by violence and conflict to inform innovative interventions, generate knowledge, shape public discourse, influence policy, hold states accountable and promote gender equality, social cohesion and active citizenship.

JOB SUMMARY

SVR seeks a candidate that is knowledgeable, respected by policy makers, national and regional structures, and the professional community – including research and advocacy, institutes, psychological and community Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) at national, continental and international level. The candidate should have strong stakeholder relations and be well-networked towards building a sustainable organisation. CSVR is looking to appoint a dynamic, innovative, strategic and tactical leader, an Executive Director who sees both the big picture and the details. This position will be responsible for promoting sustainable peace at community, national, regional and global levels by understanding, preventing and addressing the effects of violence and inequality. The selected candidate will be based in the Johannesburg office and report directly to the CSVR Board of Trustees.

JOB PURPOSE AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Lead the development and implementation of the organisational strategy, resourcing and governance. 2. Lead the integration and mainstreaming of gender across programmes and departments. 3. Account for all functions of the organisation including finances, communications and operations (IT, HR, Admin, Risk management). 4. Drive the funding and fundraising (donor liaison, building reserves, increasing funding) to ensure the financial health of the organisation. 5. Identify, initiate and maintain strategic partnerships 6. Profile and strategically position the organisation in national, continental and international forums. 7. Promote and maintain a healthy organisational culture.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

ACTIVITIES

Integrated Transitional Justice and Peacebuilding Interventions

• Identify, initiate and strengthen strategic national, continental and international partnerships towards the integration of transitional justice and peacebuilding. • Lead and direct the convening of platforms to foster integration of transitional justice and peacebuilding interventions (e.g., Capacity development)

Increased African thought leadership

• Leverage expertise for profiling and strategic positioning of the organisation at national, continental and international platforms. • Oversee, produce and share knowledge through various platforms.

Redress for victims of human rights violations and violence

• Direct the creation of collective platforms through which institutions are held accountable for human rights violations, violence and redress.

Increased accountability for transitional justice, violence prevention and redress

• Leverage and participate in high level platforms, diplomatic corps and multilateral relations towards increasing accountability.

Effective, efficient and sustainable organisation

• Lead the development and implementation of the organisational strategy. • Drive and shape goal setting and business planning for the organisation. • Create and build opportunities for cross-team and cross- organisational synergy and collaboration. • Oversee the development, review and implementation of efficient and effective policies and procedures, foster a culture of accountability and compliance. • Provide effective leadership, supervision, support and oversight of all CSVR staff and foster a culture of synergy and growth.


QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

CANDIDATE PROFILE

1. At least a Master’s in a relevant degree (Human rights, social work, psychology, gender, business administration, law, development, etc). 2. At least 10 years’ management experience. 3. At least 15 years’ experience in the field of violence prevention/peacebuilding/gender/trauma/ mental health and psychosocial support/transitional justice and/or human rights. 4. Experience in a non-profit environment will be an added advantage

Strong fundraising experience. 6. Financial management skills and good governance. 7. Highly motivated to deliver positive change. 8. Willingness to travel and flexibility with working hours. 9. Fluent in spoken and demonstrated written English skills. 10. Experience in effectively and efficiently managing and growing non-profit organizations.
