In response, 230 investors with USD $16.2 trillion in assets under management publicly demanded corporate action on deforestation in the Amazon and beyond. This was further underlined at COP26 in Glasgow. Many of these investors rely on our data and insights to tackle this problem. We also help the companies they finance to better address their own risks related to deforestation and other impacts on nature and people. Our information also helps improve accountability, and is used by campaigning organisations and journalists worldwide. Global Canopy is at the heart of a global movement to change markets by making their impacts and dependencies on nature more transparent and accountable.

Our recent work spearheading a new reporting framework for market impacts and dependence on nature has the support of financial institutions and companies worldwide – and has been championed in recent months by both the UN Secretary General, and President Macron of France. What we do Global Canopy is a data-driven not for profit that targets the market forces destroying nature. We do this by improving transparency and accountability. We provide innovative open-access data, clear metrics, and actionable insights to leading companies, financial institutions, governments and campaigning organisations worldwide. • We enable leading companies, financial institutions and governments to identify and tackle impacts on nature in their supply chains and investments. • We improve accountability by shining a light on powerful players that are failing to act on this critical issue. • And we rank the performance of companies on deforestation and other social and environmental metrics, helping to improve ESG ratings on these issues. Over the last 5 years, with partners we have created a set of groundbreaking open data platforms, including:

• Forest 500 - identifying, assessing and ranking the 500 ‘powerbrokers of deforestation’ • Trase - for the first time linking consumer markets to deforestation on the ground at scale. • ENCORE - a unique approach for financial institutions to estimate and explore the dependence of their portfolios on nature, and related financial risks. • TNFD - a nascent Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures - a ‘TCFD’ for nature - backed by major financial institutions, companies and governments. Over the critical years ahead, we will continue to innovate in linking markets to the origins of what they consume, and to the social and environmental impacts they cause. The Role: Overview Global Canopy is seeking a talented, ambitious and mission-driven Finance Director with a strong track record in non-profit financial management and team leadership. This is a moment of rapid growth and transformational opportunity for the organisation, at the start of a well-funded 5-year strategic period.

Business Partners, and 2 Finance and Admin Officers. The finance function and team are ready to move to the next level in the context of continuing growth and ambition in the organisation. This creates an opportunity for a review of our financial strategies and systems, and new thinking as we evolve.

You will lead on financial strategy and management for the charity and provide advice and support on the organisation’s strategic development and management overall as a key member of its Leadership Team. You will also be the Company Secretary, overseeing our governance and risk management processes.

Experience of managing change (“changing the wheel while the car is moving”) and finding new ways to solve problems will be invaluable.

The Finance Director leads GC’s growing Finance team, with direct line management of a team currently comprising a Finance Manager, 2 Finance

The Finance Director will report to the Executive Director, work closely alongside the COO. They will play a key role in the organisation’s Leadership Team and Board engagement, putting them at the heart of a vibrant and innovative organisation that plays a vital role in the fight against the climate and nature crisis.

The Role: Responsibilities Lead and develop GC’s strategic and operational financial management (55%) • Develop a financing strategy which demonstrates how GC will finance its strategic plan and monitor performance against the strategy. • Lead risk management processes within GC and support both managers and trustees to understand and fulfil their responsibilities for risk management. • Develop and prepare GC’s organisational dashboard of KPIs including financial and non-financial indicators. • Produce regular reports for the leadership team and the trustees which communicates and analyses performance. • Oversight of financial planning, reporting, controls, payroll and cash management. • Act as Company Secretary and lead on governance processes at GC. • Help guide and set up systems for GC’s growing earned income and commercial revenue streams. • Support the evolving shape and business plan of the organisation as it grows to ensure financial sustainability.

Lead the Finance team (30%) • Develop, lead and manage the Finance team, ensuring financial frameworks, procedures and processes are in place and evolve to operate effectively and efficiently. • Improve the capability across the organisation to deal with finances and budgeting. Leadership team (15%) • Prepare for and participate actively in leadership team meetings, trustee meetings and other team meetings. • Contribute to the development of GC’s wider strategic plans, initiatives and activities as appropriate.

About you To be successful in this role, these are the things that will matter the most: • Experience overseeing management of a complex portfolio of philanthropic and public funds and of UK charity accounting. • Track record developing & leading teams and having impact and influence across a fast-growing organisation. • Skills and drive to lead on a financing strategy that diversifies income streams while maximising our charity’s impact. Essential behavioural competencies: • Solutions-focused and collaborative, taking responsibility for the team’s effectiveness, wellbeing and internal impact. • Impact-oriented, making finance leadership count in our development as an organisation & our impact in the world. • Able to identify needs and to communicate complex financial information in a simple and clear way. • Able to live Global Canopy’s values and mission, which strives for excellence and focuses on solutions/impact.

Skills and experience: • Qualified accountant, or significant senior experience. • Board-level experience commensurate with role as Company Secretary (relevant qualifications a plus). • Third sector experience / knowledge of charity SORP. • Track record of overseeing funding contracts and reporting to donors, including management of multiple income streams which fund multiple projects. • Board-level collaboration and reporting experience, including on risk management and compliance. • Experience in commercialisation of products/services or experience of commercial financial management a plus. • Verbal and written communication skills to engage and connect with a range of stakeholders on financial and organisational matters. • Senior finance experience in a complex charity at a time of change and growth.
