Addition Helpful Hint It doesn’t matter which order you add the numbers in an addition problem. Examples: 34 + 11 = 45
is the same as
11 + 34 = 45
17 + 10 + 24 = 51 is the same as 10 + 24 + 17 = 51

Division Helpful Hint Division splits, or shares, amounts into equal groups. Example: 20 ÷ 4 = 5 is the same as 20 shared equally between 4 groups = 5 in each group

Helpful Hint Try using the ‘bus stop’ method to help you work out division questions. Example: For 48 ÷ 4 place the 48 in a ‘bus stop’: 4 48 1 First divide 4 into 4, which is 1: 4 48 12 Then divide 4 into 8, which is 2: 4 48 This gives the answer: 48 ÷ 4 = 12
