Art Camps return Camp director, art teacher and Art to Go business owner Andi Bedsworth has been working with the More excitement is in store this coming holiday Arts Council and The Powerhouse event facility to season for kids and parents alike, as the Yoknapataw- bring more art education to the area consistently for pha Arts Council and Oxford local business Art to Go the better part of a decade. “I thought it would be really fun to develop team up to provide another round of Holiday Break new art classes and camps—and I wanted to do Art Camp. Not only does this program bring kids ages 3 summers—then found that there was also need through 12 opportunities to be creative and socialize for when kids are out of school and parents are during time off from school, but it allows many work- still at work,” Bedsworth said. “So during spring, ing parents to maintain their schedules throughout Thanksgiving and Christmas break, and Columbus Day and different holidays like that, we hold the often-hectic days leading up to Christmas. The holiday-themed camp offers both a half and camps where we do arts projects and games and full-day option, and involves various crafts, movies different things to keep the kids occupied and and games which cater to the interests and the age safe and having fun creatively expressing themselves —while the parents are still at work and groups of attendees. There will be the Santa’s Elves Workshop on Mon- kids are out of school.” YAC Executive Director Wayne Andrews provided day, Dec. 23, and also the 2020 Winterland Art Camp, which will occur on two different days: Thursday and further insight into the council’s role in the popular series of holiday camps. Friday, Jan. 2 and 3.

“What we do as an arts council is work with artists to help them start a business, and so the council actually doesn’t run the art camps, but we partner with artists by providing them space, administrative support, marketing, and scheduling, Andrews said. “We do the administrative part, while they create the classes and the programs that are particular to their talents. One of the art council’s longest partners has been Bedsworth and Art to Go. “(Bedsworth) was an instructor at the University, and she wanted to have her own business, and this is how she transitioned, Andrews said. “These opportunities have had an economic impact on our town, while providing a very needed service of handling kids out of school — while I still have to work.

These holiday camps have also allowed Bedsworth to supply some local college students, and other artists, with teaching opportunities thanks to the growing popularity of the programs. “It allows us to open the space up to lots of different teachers to try lots of different things, Andrews said. “My favorite project was making the snowman face, said returning Holiday Art Camp student Julian Martin, 8. “You don’t just have to sit there and listen to what a teacher tells you to do. You get to explore making art on your own — and you get recess, so it’s not boring at all. More information can be found at OxfordArts.com

Canopy of

Lights returns to Oxford Downtown Square BY JAKE THOMPSON

The most wonderful time of the year is here, and Oxford is bringing back a few old traditions this holiday season. Returning last year after an absence, the Downtown Square’s Canopy of Lights is back this year with a lighting ceremony that took place in November. The idea to bring the lights back came from Oxford Mayor Robyn Tannehill seeing old photos of the Square at Christmastime when the Canopy of Lights was a prominent feature.

18 Holiday Gift Guide=2019

Through the City’s research, they learned the canopy dates as far back as the 1960s and the original canopy featured orange, green, red and blue lightbulbs that were regular-sized and not the small lightbulbs that are used today. When trying to recreate that same imagery with the canopy’s revival, the City ran into some issues. “While researching our options, we discovered that these larger, colored bulbs would overload today’s infrastructure,” Tannehill said in a statement. “For this reason, our canopy features white LED lights. We worked hard to find a lovely white light that does not have the overly blue glow that is present with some LEDs.” The City Buildings and Grounds Department, along with the Oxford Fire Department and Oxford Utilities, worked to try and get the canopy installed on Nov. 14 prior to SEC Network’s SEC Nation coming to town for Ole Miss’s football game against No. 1 LSU and in the anticipation of large crowds on the Square. “We hope that our citizens and visitors alike will take the opportunity to come to the Square and enjoy the view!” Tannehill’s statement read. The canopy is not the only former holiday tradition the City of Oxford is bringing back. For the first time in 10 years, the downtown water tower will be lit up by Christmas lights. The City determined through old photographs and any memories of people who could remember that the tradition with the water tower began in 1994. In 2009, the City ended the tradition due to many needed repairs. “As Oxford grows, we continue to find ways to take our cherished traditions and turn them into new experiences,” Tannehill said. “We’ve heard many stories of how people knew they were home for the holidays when they spotted the lights on the water tower from Highways 6 and 7.”

Dance

of the Fleas UM Museum’s 2019 ornament inspired by crowd favorite artwork BY ANNA GUIZERIX The University of Mississippi Museum’s 2019 commemorative ornament is one that will have its recipients hopping, that’s for sure. Inspired by the Pulgas Vestidas, or dressed fleas, from the UM Museum’s Mary Buie Collection, the ornament’s design departs from the trend of previous years, in which a landmark was depicted in gilded gold. Instead, as Membership, Events, and Communications Coordinator Kate Wallace said, the Pulgas Vestidas ornament is a whimsical play on one of the most wellloved works in the museum’s original collection. “The Museum’s pulgas vestidas have been on constant display since their addition to the original 1939

20 Holiday Gift Guide=2019

Mary Buie Museum, cementing them as the most beloved staple of our collection,” Wallace said. “The Fleas are a visitor favorite and have been continually on display longer than any other piece in the permanent collection.” Pulgas Vestidas, or dressed fleas, are a Mexican folk tradition in which fleas were clothed and arranged in handmade dioramas to resemble tiny people. Although the tradition can be traced back to 18th century Mexico, their original purpose is unclear. A possible explanation is that they were given as gifts to newlywed couples, the most popular subject. In the late 19th century, Mexican women began to sell these to tourists as collectible oddities.

It is believed that this folk art started in convents more than 300 years ago and flourished in Guanajato, Mexico. Common people eventually started making their own pulgas vestidas to sell to tourists, but the practice had died out by the mid-1900’s.

- Octavio Paz

I shall never be one to disparage this amazing skill, since where spiritual health is concerned, building a skyscraper and adorning a flea are each as monstrous as the other.

The “happy wedding party” on display at the UM Museum is made from fleas, cloth and paper – and so small, their display is approximately the same dimensions as a book of matches. Esteemed Mexican poet, writer, philosopher and diplomat Octavio Paz had much to say about the art of flea adornment. A winner of the 1990 Nobel Prize in Literature, in the 1920s Paz called it a “difficult art, exquisite and useless.” He went on to

add, “I shall never be one to disparage this amazing skill, since where spiritual health is concerned, building a skyscraper and adorning a flea are each as monstrous as the other.” The individual insect characters were accessorized with shoes, hats, belts – even almost microscopic loaves of bread. Distinguished, elegantly attired fleas could be purchased as late as the 1930s, before the tradition eventually faded away and became a lost art. This year marks the UM Museum’s 19th ornament. Ornaments from previous years include: the Old Skipwith House, Brandt Memory House, Ventress Hall, the Lafayette County Courthouse, Oxford City Hall, the Ole Miss Women’s Basketball Jersey, the Theora Hamblett House, Theora Hamblett’s “Christmas Trees,” the Walk of Champions, Oxford’s Double Decker Bus, Powder Blue Football Helmet (no longer available), Faulkner’s Typewriter (no longer available), the Herakles Neck Amphora, the Barlow’s Planetarium, and the Grove. (I’m missing a few that are sold out, but I can send a complete list too.) New ornaments are $25. Previous years’ ornaments are $20 each. Museum members and Friends of the Museum get a 10 percent discount on all merchandise in the store.

SUGAR CONE CHRISTMAS TREES INGREDIENTS 1 box of store-bought wae cones Green food coloring Vanilla buttercream frosting (homemade or store-bought is fine) Coconut shavings Icing bags and decorating tips M&Ms candies Peppermints Skittles Chocolate Chips

HOW TO MAKE IT 1- Place the sugar cones upside down on parchment paper, on a flat surface. 2- Combine the green food coloring and vanilla buttercream to make green frosting. 3- Using a butter knife (or something safer for little hands), apply a coat of frosting to the outside of the cones. 4- From there, let your (and your little one’s) imagination run wild. Use the coconut shavings to create a flocked tree, or make it a sweet surprise and fill with candies. 5- Once sugar cone trees are decorated, display on a round platter for a festive centerpiece at your desert table. Keep an eye out for any elves who might be looking for a fix for their sweet tooth!

From the

desk of Santa Claus Dear Children of the LOU Community, Ho Ho Ho from my workshop at the North Pole! I hear you’ve been very good boys and girls this year! All the elves have told me they’ve been checking in on you, and they’re quite impressed. Mrs. Claus and I are so very proud of each of you! Here at the North Pole, we’ve all been hard at work getting ready for the big day. The toy shop is full of toys ready to be piled into the sleigh, and the reindeer are racing to begin their magical flight. Mrs. Claus has been baking cookies around the

24 Holiday Gift Guide=2019

clock for the elves, to make sure they have plenty of energy before Christmas Eve. It won’t be long before your teachers get you to send letters back to me, detailing exactly what you want for Christmas. If you’re good, and eat your vegetables and mind your mommies and daddies, I’ll be sure to tell Rudolph, we’ll be making a stop in Lafayette County again this year. I’m making a couple early stops in your town at the Oxford Christmas parade and at Visit Oxford and the Graduate Hotel, too – I might even stop by PetsMart to make sure Fido has his Christmas dreams come true!

Christmas in Oxford is so magical, and it’s because of good boys and girls like you who keep Christmas cheer going all year long. Be sure to be kind to others, be a good helper at school and do all your chores. I’ll find out who is naughty and who is nice! I better run! Mrs. Claus is calling for me to try on my suit. She’s certain it won’t fit after all those delicious cookies you left for me last year! Love and Merry Christmas, Santa Claus P.S. Leave some carrots and oats out for my reindeer this year – they get hungry flying across the globe!
