I am Brian Welton, and I recently joined the Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi family as your new CEO and administrator.

I have worked for Baptist Memorial Health Care for 11 years, most recently as the CEO of Baptist Memorial Hospital-Crittenden in West Memphis, Ark.

Many factors drew my family to the LOU community. Perhaps, most of all, the way people genuinely care about their neighbors and each other.

I also saw a team of innovators who have a vision for this community and are striving for excellence by keeping the patient at the center of every decision we make. That’s what makes a hospital thrive.

I am honored to have joined the Baptist North Mississippi family and will ensure we continue to build on decades of hard work and progress. We have a talented team of skilled physicians and care givers who collaboratively develop initiatives that meet the needs of our patients and community.

As Oxford and its surrounding areas grow, so, too, will the advanced services we offer. We continue to recruit top-tier physicians and are working to train the next generation of doctors with our internal medicine residency program, now in its third year.

Our goal is nothing short of establishing Baptist as your provider of choice. As the new CEO, I will continue building on our strong foundation of caring, excellence, high quality care, and innovation. Great things have been happening at Baptist North Mississippi for over 35 years now. Here’s to more great things to come!

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of it. And it will be my privilege to come to know all of you.

BAPTIST OFFERS COMPREHENSIVE HEART CARE SERVICES

The Baptist North Mississippi Heart Care Center offers the full continuum of advanced cardiac care, from heart surgery to cardiac rehab. When seconds matter, that technology provides rapid diagnostics and better treatment.

Coupled with the Chest Pain

Center, Baptist continues to provide comprehensive heart care services in one advanced facility.

The Heart Care Center has two dedicated catheterization labs, an electrophysiology lab, and a peripheral vascular lab, as well as a multitude of noninvasive diagnostic procedures. The center also offers a two-phase cardiac rehabilitation program designed to restore patients to normal

levels of activity and reduce future risk of heart problems.

Other diagnostic and noninvasive services include echocardiography (M-mode, 2-D, doppler and transesophageal), non-invasive vascular studies, electrocardiography (EKG, ECG), coronary intensive care and Holter monitoring.

Invasive services include cardiovascular surgery, renal

angiography, aortography, percutaneous transluminal angioplasty coronary stents, and pacemaker and internal defibrillator implantation.

The Heart Care Center was recently expanded with the opening of the new Electrophysiology Lab.

The EP Lab is used to assess and repair the heart’s electrical system and diagnose abnormal heartbeats such as bradycardia, tachycardia, atrial fibrillation and cardiac arrest. The EP Lab allows physicians to perform cardiac ablations, EP studies, 3D mapping, and device implants such as pacemakers and defibrillators.

Recently the EP team implanted the first leadless Aveir pacemaker and performed a Vein of Marshall alcohol ablation.

The American College of Cardiology recently recognized Baptist Memorial Hospital –North Mississippi for excellence in diagnostic catheterizations and percutaneous coronary interventions with its Cardiac Cath Lab Accreditation.

Baptist has earned the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain – MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award for the fifth year in a row. They also hold accreditations for TEE and Chest Pain Center Accreditation.

The Baptist North Mississippi Heart Care Center is offering the latest-generation stroke risk reduction option for high-risk patients with non-valvular AFib seeking an alternative to long-term blood thinning medications.

Baptist North Mississippi Heart

Care Center will perform its first Watchman procedure in February. The Watchman is a minimally invasive, one-time procedure designed to reduce the risk of strokes that originate in the left atrial appendage.

“Left atrial appendage occlusion (Watchman) can allow patients to safely discontinue their blood thinner while simultaneously providing protection from strokes caused by atrial fibrillation,” said Cardiology specialist Dr. Thomas Flautt. “We are extremely excited to bring this new technology to the Oxford community.”

Dr. Mark Campbell will be bringing back the TAVR procedure in March. TAVR is a procedure that replaces a diseased aortic valve with a manmade valve.

LIVING WITH DIABETES

A Practical Guide to Ongoing Health Maintenance

In the realm of health, millions grapple with diabetes, an ongoing condition that demands consistent care and attention. This journey involves individuals equipped with glucose meters, insulin pens, and a steadfast commitment to sustain their well-being.

Living with diabetes is an ongoing process, where blood sugar levels shape the daily landscape, and every decision plays a crucial role in one’s health journey. Beyond occasional interventions, the key to thriving lies in continuous and comprehensive maintenance.

At the forefront of this story are individuals refusing to let their diagnosis dictate their lives. They become architects of their health, building a foundation against the unpredictable fluctuations of blood sugar through knowledge – a deep understanding of diabetes and its impact on daily life. This knowledge transforms patients into experts, empowering them to make informed decisions.

Continuous glucose monitoring becomes a valuable tool, freeing individuals from sporadic blood sugar checks. Real-time data becomes their ally, allowing swift responses to deviations from the norm. This constant awareness is not just a tool; it’s a lifeline for proactive

health management.

Nutrition takes a central role, involving meticulous meal planning and a focus on balancing carbohydrates. The kitchen transforms into a space where food choices consider both taste and health, emphasizing moderation and balance.

Exercise becomes a key element in this quest for sustained health. Physical activity is not just a routine; it’s a prescription to regulate blood sugar, enhance insulin sensitivity, and fortify the body against potential complications. The variety of options ensures everyone can find an activity that suits their preferences and fits into their lifestyle.

Beyond these essentials,

the support of a community becomes a pillar of strength. Connecting with others sharing similar journeys provides not only emotional support but also practical tips and insights. Managing diabetes is not a solo mission but a collective effort.

As we explore the lives of these resilient individuals, their stories convey a simple truth – managing diabetes is a marathon, not a sprint. It requires adaptability, resilience, and a commitment to continuous maintenance. Through knowledge, technology, nutrition, exercise, and community, they not only defy stereotypes but inspire others on a similar path toward sustained health and well-being.

HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY

Baptist North Mississippi is the only facility in the Oxford area with a hyperbaric oxygen therapy suite. Some wounds need 100 percent oxygen to heal properly. Pressurized oxygen stimulates the body’s natural healing process allowing new blood vessels to grow into injured tissue.

Hyperbaric oxygen is a medical treatment in which the patient breathes pure oxygen under increased pressure. It is administered in a single-person chamber and while it may be the main treatment conditions, it is usually part of an overall plan of care involving surgery, antibiotics or other therapy.

Hyperbaric oxygen is a simple concept. The air we breathe is normally 21% oxygen at 14.7 pounds of pressure per square inch (psi). In the chamber, the pressure can be increased to as much as three times normal, and the patient breathes 100% oxygen. This safely increases the amount of oxygen in the blood to many times its normal levels, thereby delivering much more oxygen to all parts of the body. This increase in oxygen delivery helps improve healing and controls infection in certain conditions.

HYPERBARIC OXYGEN FACILITY

Our single-person chambers of clear, acrylic plastic are seven feet long and 30 inches in diameter. During the treatment, you lie on a stretcher inside the chamber. The entire chamber is filled with oxygen so all you do is breathe normally. An open microphone inside the chamber allows you to communicate with the staff at all times. Each treatment usually lasts about two hours and you may sleep, listen to music, watch television or your favorite video streaming service.

OTHER TREATMENTS PROVIDED

We also offer the following treatment options: Wound debridement

Bioengineered skin substitutes

Epidermal skin grafting

Compression therapy

PATIENT GUIDE

Checking into the hospital can be an intimidating experience for some. Follow these guidelines to ensure your stay at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi goes as smoothly as possible.

First things first:

Ask your doctor what will happen during your hospital visit. Ask for a simpler explanation for anything you don’t understand.

Select an “advocate” to help you during your hospital stay. You need a trusted family member or friend to assist you, in your room, during stressful moments, remembering things you can’t and making sure your wishes are respected.

PREPARE A MEDICAL INFORMATION FILE

Be prepared to share your medical history with the doctors and nurses who will be caring for you. An at-home medical file is a convenient way to gather the documents that you may need if hospitalized:

• Medical directive documents, including a living will and durable power of attorney for health care decision-making.

• A list of your current medications, including any over-the-counter drugs, herbal medicines and alternative products including the dose, frequency and reason for taking each.

• A list of all your allergies, including food, environmental and medication allergies.

• If you have a problem with falling or other safety issues, note that, too.

• A list of your physicians and their phone numbers.

• A list of all pharmacies and phone numbers.

MEDICATIONS YOU RECEIVE AT THE HOSPITAL

While you’re in the hospital, your physician may prescribe more than one medication for you. Ask these questions about them and write down the answers:

• What are the names of the medications I’m taking?

• Why am I taking this medication?

• What times will I be receiving the medication?

• Can I see what my medications look like?

• May I have a summary list of my discharge medications?

PRE-ADMISSION AND INSURANCE

Please let Baptist know ahead of time that you are coming. Most insurance companies require prior approval or certification.

• Notify your insurance company as soon as you think you will have to go to the hospital.

• Many insurance companies require you to notify them no later than 48 hours after an emergency admission to the hospital.

• Your insurance company may or may not be responsible for paying for your services. It depends on your policy.

• You and your physician are responsible for making sure you have met all the conditions of your policy.

Your personal information: Keep in mind that you are being admitted to the hospital because your physician, who is a member of the medical staff, has requested it. Therefore, we will need to get some personal information from you, including financial and medical records required by law. These records are confidential and will not be released to persons not involved in your care or payment for your care without your written consent.

YOUR LEGAL MEDICAL DIRECTIVES

You should prepare an advanced medical directive, either a signed and notarized living will or a durable power of attorney for health care. You may also set up an advance care plan or appoint your own health care agent using the forms below.

• In case something happens and you can’t make decisions for yourself, these legal documents let your doctors and family know what you have already decided about your care.

• Tell your doctors and family about this now so there aren’t any surprises.

• If you need to set up a living will or power of attorney while you are already in the hospital, notify Patient Registration.

• If you do not bring a copy with you, have someone bring it to the hospital to be placed in your medical chart as soon as possible.

MEDICAL DIRECTIVE LEGAL FORMS

If you don’t already have the documents listed above, you can print, fill out and sign an advance directive, with or without an attorney. Two (2) witnesses must sign in your presence or you must have the

document notarized.

The forms can be found online at https:// baptistonline.org.

confidential and will not be released to persons not involved in your care or payment for your care without your written consent.

DURING YOUR STAY

Make sure you have a copy of the Patient Bill of Rights in your hospital room. If for any reason you feel you aren’t receiving the best care possible, talk to the nurse in charge or the hospital’s patient relations representative.

• For your safety, you will receive an identification wristband to wear until you are discharged from the hospital.

• Any medications you bring into the hospital must be left with the nurse.

• Please do not keep valuables or money with you. The hospital cannot be responsible for them.

• Electronic appliances, such as hair dryers, clocks, electric razors and curling irons, must be checked and approved by someone from nursing services before being used in your room.

• Do not bring pillows or blankets from home. If you need extra linens, please contact someone at the nurses’ station.

COUNTDOWN TO CHECK-OUT

Procedures for your check-out or discharge from the hospital involve your doctors and staff working together. Please be patient during this process. We understand your

eagerness to return home!

• Your doctor will advise you that you are ready to be discharged from the hospital and will write orders directing the hospital staff to begin the discharge process.

• Your nurse will act on any orders your doctor has ordered prior to discharge. This could involve final tests or lab procedures that need to be completed prior to your leaving. This process can take several hours.

• At this point, you may not be completely recovered and may need extra attention and care at home. Please tell your nurse you would like to speak with a case manager and/ or social worker if you need help in planning for special equipment.

• Contact family members to arrange ta ride home, unless you will be traveling by ambulance (hospital staff will handle that). Be sure to let the hospital staff know if you prefer a particular ambulance service.

• Once you have been officially cleared for discharge, your nurse will remove your IV and other medical devices, discuss with you any physician instructions, such as follow-up visits and how to take medications.

• Finally, you will be assisted to the door by a member of the hospital staff.

MANAGING YOUR PAIN

Based on your comfort level, your health care providers will develop

a pain management plan for you while you’re in the hospital. Be sure to share with your doctor what has worked to relieve your pain in the past and to provide honest answers to questions about the pain you’re experiencing.

• Don’t hesitate or be afraid to tell the hospital staff if you’re in pain.

• Don’t wait to report pain. Pain is much easier to control when it first begins than when it has become intolerable.

• Actively help your health care professionals assess your pain. Answer their questions as completely and honestly as you can.
