Welcome to the 13th annual Oxford Film Festival The festival has seen some exciting changes this year as we transition to a full-time, year-round event with our first full-time paid executive director. We are adding more monthly programs, and have built the festival into a five-day event instead of four; with more venues, panels, parties and films. We are also focusing on helping to support local filmmakers get their films made with our OxFilm Society program. One thing that has not changed is our focus on great movies. This year the Oxford Film Festival will bring you 139 films that will provoke and amuse. From documentaries on “Dixie,” a comedy about divorce, puppets in love, and an animal balloon fight, to music videos and experimental shorts; this year’s slate of films really has something for everyone. What is a film festival? Sure, it is about watching independent and low budget films, getting to interact with filmmakers, and learning more about the industry. But, it is more than that. Just as you go to a book signing or an art reception, going to a film festival is about supporting the arts. From first time filmmakers and DIY go getters, to veterans in their field, film festivals showcase a wide variety of talents. For you, this is a rare opportunity to see films before many others do; from our world and regional premieres to special screenings of films that may not otherwise get to be shown locally. I am especially excited to host the filmmakers and special guests in Oxford. I love how our town rolls out the red carpet for visitors, and we know they will feel right at home because of you. This weekend is not just movies! We have nine panel discussions that focus on a variety of topics in the film industry such as: making movies here at home, getting cast in a movie, and diversity in the industry. Our experts will be sure to inspire you. The most important element of every festival is the Q&A with the filmmaker. This is your opportunity to learn more about how the movie was made, why the filmmaker made certain artistic choices, and more. Interaction with the filmmaker at a festival is what makes these events so special. Don’t miss out on taking the opportunity to speak one-on-one with a filmmaker. But, of course, there are also the parties. Anyone with a VIP pass or a party upgrade ticket gets to hang out with us in the evenings. From a bigtop circus themed awards ceremony, to a concert with surprise musical guests; the festival parties put the festival in film festival. I look forward to meeting each and every one of you this weekend. As the executive director, my job is made easy because of the support of our sponsors, our hard working volunteers, and you, our guests. If I don’t get the opportunity to thank you in person, please know that your support means the world to the Oxford Film Festival and myself. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge all those hard working women and men who came before me to make the festival what it is today. If you see them around be sure to thank Molly Fergusson, Michelle Emanuel, Diala Chaney, Micah Ginn and so many others for their efforts over the past 12 years to bring independent film to Oxford. Please join me in celebrating this year’s festival. I’ll see you at the movies. Melanie Addington

Welcome to Mississippi and the Thirteenth Annual Oxford Film Festival. The Mississippi Film Office has been a proud supporter of the festival since its inception, and is happy to be a part of this vibrant and innovative cinematic celebration. We are delighted to have you here. In addition to providing a great venue for our own Mississippi filmmakers, and for presenting bold and engaging independent film to an audience from throughout the South; we are happy to show off Mississippi to all of the visiting filmmakers. Oxford, Lafayette County, and locations across the state have supported location film production for over 100 years, and we look forward to supporting the industry long into the future; wherever and however filmmaking may advance. Our Mississippi Motion Picture Incentive Program will certainly be a part of that future. Our cash rebate program returns to the filmmaker up to a 35% rebate on Mississippi production expenditures and on resident and nonresident cast and crew payroll within 90 days of completion of production here. Our $50,000 minimum spend is the lowest for a rebate in the country. Video games, national commercials, webisodes, shorts, documentaries, television, and features are all eligible. There are also tax reductions on production equipment. We are committed to making changes dedicated to the continued development and support of the film industry in Mississippi. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at 601-359-3297, or visit our website, www.filmMississippi.org. I know you will enjoy the wealth of talent that will be showcased as well as the panel discussions and other activities that are part of this outstanding festival. Of course, I know you will also enjoy your time in Oxford, and I encourage you to explore all of the interesting venues, restaurants, and attractions that make this town so special. Working with the Mississippi Development Authority’s Tourism Division, it is my hope to invite Mississippi-born musicians, performers, filmmakers, chefs, photographers, and other artists back home to showcase their talents. There is no place quite as special as Mississippi when it comes to the arts, and this yearlong celebration will offer a unique way to highlight all that sets our state apart. The support of members of the arts community like yourselves will be especially important in making this a success, and I encourage you to visit mscreativeeconomy.com for more information on how you can submit an event to be part of the celebration. And The Award Goes To…
Each year of the Oxford Film Festival, winners in the narrative feature and short, documentary feature and short, animation, experimental and Mississippi narrative, documentary and music video categories receive The Spirit of the Hoka award. New this year is a best editing award, selected by head programmers and staff. The Festival is presenting two new awards this year: Best Editing and the Alice Guy-Blaché Award for female filmmakers. What is a Hoka? The award is named for the Hoka Theater, founded by Ron Shapiro in Oxford in the 1970s. The combination movie house and café first brought independent films to town and served as a cultural nexus for the townspeople and college students. At the time, it was a rare and special treat for a small town in Mississippi. It helped to coalesce a community of film buffs, too; a community that has blossomed under the care of the film festival over the past decade-plus. The theater itself was named for Princess Hoka, the Chickasaw woman who, according to legend, first deeded much of Mississippi, including the area now known as Oxford, to white settlers back in 1832 with the Treaty of Pontotoc. The Spirit of the Hoka statuette was created by renowned sculptor Bill Beckwith. New prizes this year also include: Narrative Feature: • $20,000 camera rental package from Panavision • Eight hours of post color correction from John Davidson Color • A listing of your script on InkTip so that producers and reps can find you Documentary Feature • Three days of audio post production from Bad Animals of Seattle • Eight-hours of post color correction from John Davidson Color Narrative Short • A listing of your script on InkTip so that producers and reps can find you • Three days of audio post production from Taproot Design in Oxford Documentary Short • Three days of audio post production from Taproot Audio Design in Oxford

Mississippi Narrative • Cash prize through the Casey Spradling Memorial Award • One-year membership and free equipment rentals from OxFilm Society • InkTip Script listing
Mississippi Documentary • Broadcasting on Mississippi Public Broadcasting (Broadcast on Mississippi Public Broadcasting (MPB) Television is contingent upon and limited to the winning film meeting MPB’s legal, content, and technical guidelines.) • one-year membership and free equipment rentals from OxFilm Society Mississippi Music Video • One-year membership and free equipment rentals from OxFilm Society
In addition to the Hokas, four other special awards are given: • The Alice Guy-Blaché filmmaker award is awarded to a female director. It is named in honor of Alice Guy-Blaché (July 1, 1873 – March 24, 1968) who was the first female pioneer in early French cinema and is revered as the first female director and writer of narrative fiction films. It also includes a $1,000 cash prize and is selected by head programmers and staff. • The Lisa Blount Memorial acting award is given to the strongest independent performance that shows an actor or an actress willing to take risks for their art. Lisa Blount, an award-winning actress from Arkansas, was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1983 for her breakout role in An Officer and a Gentleman, and received the Best Actress prize at the 2004 Stockholm Film Festival for her lead role in the independent feature film Chrystal. Along with her husband Ray McKinnon and coproducer Walton Goggins, Lisa took home an Academy Award for their Live Action Short The Accountant. Lisa passed away in 2010, not long after agreeing to be a juror for our 2011 festival. It is selected by head programmers and staff. • The Ron Tibbett Audience Award is named for the founding director of the Magnolia Film Festival in Starkville, the first independent film festival in Mississippi. Tibbett died in 2004 in a car accident just over a year after his short film Buffalo Common debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. • Editing Award for best editing of a film in festival.

Searching For Hell
World’s first full-length documentary film in virtual reality cinema. Searching For Hell is a feature documentary and transmedia project exploring the theme of contemporary hell through various means of artistic and social expression. The Searching For Hell film starts out as a quest to discover the truth behind the story of digging a hole to Hell – the deepest borehole in the world – in Siberia in the 1980s. From there, it continues across different continents, cultures and ideas, in an attempt to discover what and where Hell is today. Five film-making teams embarked on a journey to tell the personal and creative stories of people inhabiting contemporary Hells all over the world; the township-turnedtheme-park of Hell in Michigan, a house converted into a morbid vision of Buddhist Hell in Japan, a deadly sulphur lake in Indonesia, and the dark present-day Congo. They are all doors to Hell. This creative and original feature documentary and transmedia project – Searching For Hell – will walk you through those doors, examining Hell’s geographical, cultural and social realities Mississippi Art on Display includes images and posters from music videos, experimental, shorts, documentaries and major motion pictures made in the state: • I Didn’t Do It • 25K • Landscape of the Mind • A Long Journey • Night of the Loup Garou • A Mississippi Love Story • Ocho • Acre Beyond the Rye • Saved by Grace • Ballast • Texas Heart • Chasing the White Dragon • The Youngest One • Dodge Dakota in River • Yalobusha City Dead

Everything we do is to serve the people on the front lines of foodservice. We enable those who think “impossible” is a good reason to try something. We work to keep the people who find their purpose in early mornings, late nights, elbow grease, and the occasional fryer burn on the road to Michelin ratings.
We aren’t just in the delivery business... we’re in the success business.
A magical tale that follows Si, a temperamental 6 year old, who gets a goldfish from her parents after begging for a puppy.

Making Movies Oxford Film Festival’s Community Film by Allie Evander
The Oxford Film Festival celebrates the art of independent cinema from across the globe while also focusing on moviemaking and enhancing the arts right here in Oxford and North Mississippi. The Film Festival holds monthly events, which culminate in our annual four-day film festival each February. The festival exhibits over 100 quality films from across the globe and has been praised for its hospitality. The festival screens short and feature-length films in both showcase and competition settings, hosts panel discussions on issues in contemporary filmmaking, and invites the filmmakers to interact with the audience at a number of social events. Oxford Film Festival also supports moviemaking in the area through the production of the community film, which is shown every year at the festival. They also support moviemaking through the funding of OxFilm Society, which loans equipment to filmmakers filming in Oxford. But in 2011, the Oxford Film Festival became movie producers too, with its first ever Community Film project. It is designed to showcase local talent and bring the filmmaking experience to a local level. Each year’s community film is written, directed, and edited by local filmmakers, cast with local actors both professional and non-professional, and staffed by local volunteers. Countless members of the community pitch in each year b behind and in front of the camera to make the film a reality. The final product then premieres at the next Oxford Film Festival. “The community film helps the festival to support local filmmakers and provide opportunities for the community to not just enjoy watching movies but being part of them,” says Melanie Addington, the executive director of Oxford Film Festival. This year’s community film is Once a Month which was first adapted into a Ten Minute Play by Kate Leslie from Oxford author Tom Franklin’s short story. The story is about two couples who have a monthly dinner that is changed by a recent funeral. Once a Month will premier at this year’s Oxford Film Festival which is February 14th-16th. Alice Walker is the director of Once a
40
Month. Walker is an active member of the arts community in Oxford and has a long history in the performing arts. She is an actor, singer, artist, director, and producer and has served as president of the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council, as a member of the Board of Directors for VOX Press, and as managing producer for Theatre Oxford. She has appeared in three of the OFF community films and is making her film directorial debut with Once a Month. Derek Brown is the editor of Once a Month. Along with lifelong friend Nazario Bell, Brown established Life Long Productions in 2011 to take their passion for video, photography and all things creative to the marketplace. Danny Klimetz is the director of photography for Once a Month. Klimetz is an artist specializing in storytelling. Typically focused on still photography and couples, he enjoys the time he gets to work on other passion projects in film. Previous Community Film projects have been The Hanging of Big Todd Wade (2011), The Show Must Go On (2012), Ten (2013), and Killer Kudzu (2014). The Hanging of Big Todd Wade was written and directed by Micah Ginn. The film is set in Oxford, 1893, and is about how “Big Todd” Wade faces the gallows for a crime he did not
commit. Will his alibi be revealed before it is too late? The Show Must Go On was written and directed by Matthew Graves. During a performance of a community theater’s murder mystery play, an actor is actually killed. With the state arts commissioner in attendance to determine future funding for the theater, the cast and crew have no choice but to continue with the show. Ten is a documentary short by Joe York. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Oxford Film Festival, the University of Mississippi’s Media and Documentary Projects Center teamed up with the festival to create a documentary film starring 10-year-olds from the Oxford/Lafayette County community discussing the joys and trials of being 10 years old. Killer Kudzu was written by Felicity Flesher (winner of Oxford Film Festival’s first ever Screenplay Contest), and directed by Meaghin Burke. When Oxford is attacked by a mysterious botanical menace, the townsfolk must work together to save the city from bumbling bureaucrats and botanical terror. The Community Film enhances the arts in Oxford not only through local filmmaking but residents of Oxford have the opportunity to be apart of something big.
