Welcome to the 16th annual Oxford Film Festival. We look forward to celebrating films with you. This is now my fourth year as the Executive Director and while there are always new challenges, I feel like I have found my sea legs with the festival and am happy to share this year’s lineup with you. We’ve come a long way, baby. While we have doubled in attendance since 2015, doubled our sponsors, our budget, our film submissions, one thing that will never change is what is the heart of the festival: hospitality. We are here to make sure you have an amazing experience and we hope to keep making that happen year after year. From bowling parties and karaoke to a VIP lounge experience, we want you to festival-in-style with us. Just got time to attend one movie? Take part in a Q&A and get that festival feel. There are always too many people to thank that make this weekend a success -- from the filmmakers who make great work we have to share and champion -- to our sponsors who make the festival possible with their support -- to the volunteers who make sure the festival runs smoothly and the screeners and programmers that pick excellent movies to share. But mostly I want to thank you, the audience, for showing up, asking good questions, partying with the filmmakers and having a good time. You put the festival into Oxford Film Festival. If I don’t get the opportunity to thank you in person, please know that your support means the world to me and to the Oxford Film Festival. But if you see me, come up and introduce yourself! Please join me in celebrating our 16th. With a range of films in every genre, there is something for everyone. I’ll see you at the movies. Melanie Addington
Welcome to Oxford! This is our little hamlet, velvet ditch and hilltop oasis. We believe Oxford embodies and embraces our rich artistic and literary heritage, which all celebrates our individuality, diversity and quirks. We are glad to open our homes and businesses with a warm welcome for you to show off your works and share your originality with us. Through this, we all grow a little. We are proud of past festivals in terms of attendance and content, and we are happy to see this event continue to grow. I extend my hope that this year’s event will be better than last - and continue to do so. Enjoy your visit and please say “Hi” to everyone you see - we’re that way. Keep Oxford Square! WELCOME to Mississippi and Oxford
Film Festival’s Sweet Sixteen! We’re so proud and honored to continue supporting this celebration of cinema while witnessing its tremendous growth year after year. With over 230 films programmed, there will be no shortage of subject matter, genres, and styles of filmmaking for your viewing pleasure. In addition to providing a venue for our Mississippi filmmakers and storytellers, OFF presents bold and engaging independent films from around the globe while introducing those visiting filmmakers to the beauty and mystique of Mississippi. Oxford, Lafayette County, and communities across the state have supported film productions shot on location for over 100 years, and we look forward to supporting the industry long into the future, wherever and however filmmaking may advance in the state. Our Mississippi Motion Picture Incentive Program continues to build that path into the future. As a cash rebate program, the incentive returns 25-35% on Mississippi production expenditures and resident cast and crew payroll within 90 business days after submission. Our $50,000 minimum spend is one of the lowest in the country, and video game production, national commercials, webisodes, shorts, documentaries, television, and features are all eligible. There are also tax reductions on the rental and purchase of specific production equipment. We’re committed to the continued development and support of the film industry in Mississippi and look forward to assisting with your next production. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at 601-359-3297, or visit our website, www. filmMississippi.org We’re so glad you’ve joined us this year and look forward to meeting many of you. 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Media Arts Panel Location: Powerhouse Community Arts Center
My First Film With Zia Anger Location: Malco Screen 5
Panel includes Fest Forward Experimental films for first 2 hours. The Media Arts Panel invites both filmmakers from the Fest Forward category and artists from the Media Arts Exhibit to discuss the role that media plays in their creative practice. Panel members will also address advantages, challenges, and techniques used when communicating to their viewers through methods beyond traditional storytelling.
4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Media Arts Exhibit: Silent Reflections Reception Location: Powerhouse Community Arts Center Featuring artists Rebecca Adorno, Rebekah Flake, Desiree Dawn Kapler, Anik Kurkjian, Brooke White, and Reiko Yamada, this panel includes an exhibit dedicated to various manifestations of story telling told through various forms of media by artists spanning the mediums of photography, video, sound, and performance. Many of the “stories” stem from the artists personal experiences with regard to their own geographical origins. The art show runs from Wednesday until Feb. 26. GRAHAME WEINBREN will also perform “Letters” during the reception. A menu of 25 alphabet letters in a 5 X 5 grid is on screen. Members of the audience are invited to shout out a letter. Each letter is connected with a one minute film. Grahame acts as MC and communicates the choice to the projectionist, who operates a custom JAVA program to bring up the film connected to the chosen letter. After the film is shown, that letter is no longer available. Grahame is always adding and subtracting material to this piece, so each performance is a premiere of the most recent version.

Programmers’ Notes
Brian Whisenant
LGBTQ Programmer Although OFF has been an ally of Queer films for years, this category was created in response to homophobic legislation by our state’s legislators. It is important that we not forget that. This year, however, the films have taken an interesting turn. Our features include two very hopeful films where inclusion and love transcend bigotry and differences (At the End of the Day and Gospel of Eureka), a film that takes the coming out/coming of age story and turns it sideways (Giant Little Ones), and a documentary that reminds us that hate is still alive and terrifying (Call Her Ganda). We also have two shorts blocks (I’d like to thank the Academy) one of which takes a look at Queers on the edge-questioning, thought provoking and a little naked. While the second block may be “traditional,” it is still very, lovingly queer.
Don Lewis
Narrative Features Programmer For nearly 20 years I’ve been attending film festivals as first a volunteer and then later as a writer, filmmaker, juror and panelist. This is my first year as a true programmer and I’m honored to be showing this group of Narrative Features. Having never really done this before but having seen how it can be done well, my main goal was diversity. Not just diversity in terms of the buzzword, although definitely that. But I wanted a little something for everyone on the screens here in Oxford. I love this town and I love this festival. I wanted to give audiences a little bit of everything and I hope I came through. My only regret on how the slate turned out is that we just didn’t have enough days for all the great films that were submitted.
Donna Kozloskie
Documentary Programmer As cameras become more and more accessible, so do the stories that they are able to capture. Audiences can now easily peek into lives previously unseen. Whether one is watching the life of a neighbor (Confederate Pride, White Supremacy and My State Flag), or that of a young man on the other side of the globe (Zumari), the experiences of the world can now be experienced by any film festival audience. Each documentary film in this year’s lineup will introduce a new story - a new way of thinking, feeling, seeing, laughing and just plain being - leaving a shared experience that lingers on and off screen long after the credits roll.
Jennifer Murchison
Narrative Shorts Programmer My sophomore year of programming certainly has been easier! I have a better idea of what to expect and a better idea of what fits with our audience. But it is still a daunting task to decide what will and will not be screened at the 16th Annual Oxford Film Festival. I often identify myself as an #OldMovieWeirdo, a lover of classic cinema. I will go out of my way to be part of a cinematic experience, including driving two hours to pay respects at James Dean’s crash site, as evidenced by my picture.
8
I am proud to intersect my day job (disability service provider for students in college) with my evening/weekend/lunch hour job (film festival screener and programmer). This year, at my suggestion, the Oxford Film Festival board and executive director agreed to provide more opportunities for filmmakers and performers with disabilities by creating a reduced-rate submission fee. We have seen an increase in this responsible representation, and I am honored to be a conduit for more artists with disabilities being able to share their art and tell their stories. I hope you enjoy your time in our sleepy, southern gothic hamlet. Enjoy the program we have created, and pace yourself with the candy.
Valerie Guinn Polgar
Fest Forward Programmer The Fest Forward category had a strong first showing last year, as it was defining itself as the new experimental film and animation category. For its 2nd year, the Fest Forward program has a more distinctive presence. The Experimental Film Block includes contemporary trends in filmmaking, found in both process and content. The Narrative Animation Block includes animation styles ranging from traditional hand-drawn animation, to stop motion and pixilation, to digital and 3D animation. While the two viewing blocks are distinct, the Fest Forward Category collectively combines both traditional and contemporary trends in filmmaking told through experimental means or through the more familiar method of storytelling within the world of animation. This intersection is where the unexpected is realized.
Victoria Negri
Mississippi Programmer The Mississippi shorts and features program is a diverse lineup of films by passionate, talented artists. As somebody who has only lived in the Northeast, my only exposure to the South, other than visiting a few times because of Oxford and other events, is through film and storytelling. The filmmakers in this program depict stories that transport audiences beyond the specificity of life in Mississippi. They communicate universal struggles, they challenge political divides, they reinforce the magic of watching actors connect onscreen, and they prove that a great film, no matter where it’s made, is crafted with the honesty of the human spirit, unabashedly illuminated on screen, which connects us all. It was an honor to select these wonderful films for Oxford.
