Hi everyone and welcome to the February issue of the Observer. The summer weather has been absolutely beautiful, although challenging for the firefighters in the District. We have been running a summer photo competition, and some of the entries are featured on page 18. The winner of the voucher from The Hive Cafe at Springbank Honey is Josh Tabley for his photo of his daughter on a water slide. The team at the Ashley Gorge are running a Gala Day on February 24th. The event is a fundraiser for more improvements to the Reserve and will be a great day out. More info on page 4. The Oxford & Districts Lions and Oxford Community Trust again ran a successful Wheels with Wings event - we have some photos by Ngaire McPherson on page 8. Mark your calendar for the 24th of February for the Ashley Gorge Family Fun Day. In the past the Gala was a favourite event in the district, with people coming from far and wide to attend. Ashley Gorge Advisory Group member Robert Judson says that the first Gala was held in 1948/49. Much like this year’s gala, it was always a fundraising event, aimed at families and children, with events such as sack rack races, three legged races, sheath tossing, which is a pillowcase filled with straw, being flung over a goal post. The Reserve has seen many improvements over the past few years, with much of the drive coming from the Ashley Gorge Advisory Group and the Waimakariri Council. AGAG is made up of locals who have the Reserve at heart, and put in many hours of effort to ensure it remains the beautiful community asset it is. The Reynolds Pavilion was opened a few years ago, and there is now a free barbecue in the pavilion that visitors are welcome to use. Camp Manager Jean-Pierre says this is being well utilised, and people hold birthday parties and events there. The Ashley Gorge tracks are extremely popular with visitors totalling over 10,000 in the past 9 months alone. These tracks are the second most popular in Canterbury, after the Castle Hill track. An extensive trapping programme has seen many native birds return to the area, including the Tomtit, which Robert Judson says he does not remember seeing before. The 2024 Gala is fundraising for a Wheelchair Track and a mini playground for children. The wheelchair track will go through the 80 year old Redwood Trees, to the lookout, and back to the carpark. Jean-Pierre and his wife Michelle been running the campground for the last two years, and are excited to resurrect the Gala. In the past it was an important event for the community, and Jean-Pierre says that he would love to see as many of the community support the event and have a sense of ownership in the reserve. He says “The Gala has a lot of history, lots of people remember coming to these events with their families”. Entry to the event will be $10.00 per car load and this will include entry in the Duck Race for the first 150 cars. There is limited Eftpos, but cash is preferred. There will be lots of activities, and food available to purchase, so why not bring the family and make a day of it?

Beauty and the Wind celebrates Year of the Dragon with new Garden Sculpture by Beka Hunt

On February the 10th, the Chinese New Year will be celebrated and the Year of the Dragon officially begins. For Bonnie and Todd Selak, the timing couldn’t be more perfect. The pair own ‘Beauty and the Wind,’ a small business that Bonnie dreamt of in 2017. In 2018, Todd jumped on board, combining his engineering skills with Bonnie's ideas. Now, they are using this golden opportunity to showcase their newest kinetic wind sculpture design, the ‘Magical Wind Dragon’. Bonnie and Todd are ecstatic to share their product, as it is their most unique and intricate design yet. It features a red dragon winding around a golden garden stake, which creates the illusion that the mythical beast is soaring. When researching the significance of the dragon, Bonnie could feel the connection that the art piece has to Chinese culture and symbolism, making it all the more special. Each of their products begins as a design on paper penned by Bonnie, which Todd then turns into a prototype. In the case of the dragon, the process took over a year as they perfected the engineering, ensuring it spun easily in the wind. Their finished piece has to be strong and durable whilst keeping its magic. Luckily, Bonnie and Todd run the business out of Wellington, so always have prime testing conditions. Bonnie, who grew up in Oxford and attended Oxford Area School, hasn’t always dreamt of entering the garden decor field. The idea blossomed in a Peru workshop where she decided it was time to focus on creativity and making a business that brings her joy. When she was younger, Bonnie's mother would take her to the beach to collect driftwood, shells and beautiful trinkets. Together, they would make wind mobiles to decorate their home. Bonnie remembered the joy she had felt on those days, and wanted to bring that back into her life. Initially, she and Todd handmade the designs.

They launched their website in the first lockdown and marvelled at how their business was received world wide. Bonnie explained that many people took up gardening during the covid pandemic, and that orders came flooding in from everywhere. She spoke about the excitement that a Kuala Lumpur mailing address brings, and the pride she feels as a Cantabrian. “For Todd and I, it’s our dream. We share a passion about this, we have a vision to create fun, beautiful things that come alive in the wind. It’s impossible not to feel excited about that!” She enjoys living in Wellington, but says that the sight of the South Island will always bring a sense of home. In terms of the Magical Wind Dragon, Bonnie and Todd feel that it cements their place in the garden decor market. After a trip to the UK to exhibit in an industrial garden trade show, they found that the larger companies lacked uniqueness and passion in their designs. It’s this area that Bonnie and Todd feel most strongly about. Their new work in progress is a fairy on top of a mushroom for all those who want to feel childhood wonder. Head Lice The children have gone back to school but apart from knowledge and skills, what else might come home with your child? Unfortunately, head lice. Head lice do not discriminate – they love both clean and dirty hair and are not the result of poor hygiene. The infection is spread by head-to-head contact and generally occurs when children play together, or when they come into close contact with each other. This allows the insect to move from one head to another-they cannot ﬂy or jump!

Emma Gillard is well known in the Oxford community through her previous ownership of a much loved bookstore on Main Street. She opened Emma’s at Oxford in 2007, and ran the store for 14 years before selling the business in 2021. This was a natural progression for Emma, after years of hard work, it was time to try something new. Now, three years later, she is bringing her passion for people into the Real Estate field, earning her certificate in December to become a licensed salesperson.

Not all people with head lice get an itchy scalp when they are infected. The itch associated with head lice is from sensitivity to the saliva of the head lice. To check your child’s head you can put normal conditioner onto wet hair (this stuns and immobilises the lice) and comb with a ﬁne toothed comb, concentrating on behind the ears and nape of the neck. Many treatments (both natural and chemical) are available from our pharmacy to help kill the head lice. These treatments need to be reapplied in order to completely eradicate the infection and COMB, COMB, COMB! Many different combs are available; metal, plastic, spiral pronged, electronic lice combs... ask us which treatment and comb may work best in your childs hair. Unfortunately there is no fail proof way to stop the spread of headlice. Tying your childs hair back and/or plaiting long hair and not sharing hats, hairbrushes and hairties is a great place to start. The use of tea tree oil and other deterant sprays may help deter lice from settling on the hair.

Although Emma was looking for change, she never imagined she’d move into the housing industry. In fact, it was pottery that first stole her heart after leaving the store. She shapes pieces with her hands, using things like leaves and twigs to pattern the clay. Emma fell in love with the creative outlet, admitting that she could talk about it for hours. “I honestly didn’t know I had that creativity in me, now I have my own studio and kiln. Pottery is so personal. It’s me creating something with my own hands, that goes out into the world. ” She later revealed that her kiln is named Betty, and that opening it after firing a batch of designs makes her feel like a kid on Christmas morning. Pottery kept Emma busy until she spotted a Harcourts job advertisement in the Oxford Observer. Initially thinking nothing of it, she reread the issue later on and was encouraged by her husband to give it a go. Since leaving Emma’s at Oxford, she has found that she misses interacting with people. It was an honour to be invited into someone's life when they popped in with news of a new grandchild, or a book they loved. Now, as Emma pointed out, things only look a little different; instead of selling books about houses, she will be selling houses! Emma is hoping that the trust she was given will transfer, and that she will be able to help house buyers as they go through a somewhat scary transition.

Emma has discovered a talent for the sport, and was quick to acquire necessary gear when she realised the joy it gave her. When it’s still light out at 10pm, and the nights are far too hot for sleeping, suddenly the evenings are free, and there is finally time to read all those books you added to the list when it was winter and there were never enough hours in the day. If you didn’t make a New Year’s resolution, then this one's for you, and these are some of the best books you can read in 2024.

Ride 4 Awareness of Ovarian Cancer February is “Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month” and last Saturday from the Oxford A&P Grounds, Wendy Gerritsen began her “Ride 4 Awareness of Ovarian Cancer” on her horse Anmoch around the Oxford Township. MP Matt Doocey said a few words before cutting a ribbon to officially start Wendy and her support riders on her conquest to ride through townships each day in February throughout the South Island to bring awareness of Ovarian Cancer. Wendy invites anyone to saddle up to ride with her when she is in your town or nearby or you are welcome to find out about Ovarian cancer, including information on the signs and symptoms, by visiting her sponsored horse float which will be at the start point of each of her rides. There will also be products including Hi Vis Vests with her logo and beautiful Melwood Horse Blankets for sale. All proceeds from these sales go to the Ovarian Cancer Foundation. There is also an opportunity to show your support by donating to the Ovarian Cancer Foundation. There needs to be urgently more Awareness and research done on Ovarian Cancer.

Wendy is back to having three monthly checks with her oncologist to monitor her cancer. It is expected to return in the near future. Wendy feels lucky that she has been given time so that she can make other people aware of ovarian cancer and hopefully, they can catch it early and not have to go through what she has gone through. She bravely shares her story so other women understand the signs and symptoms. Wendy wants to make as many people aware (men included so they can check in on their wives and partners' health) to catch ovarian cancer in the early stages, which gives a better chance of survivability Ovarian Cancer can affect women of any age, so it is important to be aware of the symptoms. So, Wendy has been passionate about horses all her life. She got Anmoch as a young horse just before her diagnosis with cancer. Anmoch has given Wendy something to take her mind off cancer and given her goals to look forward to. So it seems fitting to be riding Anmoch through towns where Wendy is hoping she will be more visible and making her conquest more visible as well. Please Drive slowly around the horses Thank you.

• Ovarian Cancer has the highest death rate of all gynecological cancers in New Zealand. • Smear tests are only for Cervical Cancer and do not detect Ovarian Cancer. • Ovarian Cancer has symptoms that are easily dismissed for other ailments. • Approximately 300 women are diagnosed every year and 200 die every year, this needs to change.

Wendy has Ovarian Cancer and she knew nothing about it until it was nearly too late. Typical of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer, Wendy had been to see several GPs over the years with symptoms but felt she wasn’t really being listened to. Finally, she asked the local medical centre to see a doctor that would listen to her. Luckily she found a doctor who did and within hours of her appointment, she was booked in for an ultrasound. Wendy was diagnosed with high-grade serous ovarian cancer Stage IIIC in March 2021 and has since undergone several surgeries and rounds of chemotherapy treatment with some success, however each time the cancer has returned.

Wendy is also hoping to make connections with groups to organise talks and spread her message and awareness wider on her travels as she has already given several talks to groups in her local area. Kia ora e te whānau | Greetings family and friends of Oxford Area School. There were many significant accomplishments last year at Oxford Area School that will endure. Some of the year's highlights include the development of Takurua. It boasts an administration zone, food technologies, a canteen, science labs, workspaces, classrooms, and a wellbeing hub. We plan to officially open Takurua in early March 2024, once the busyness of the new school year settles. The naming was inspired by Our Universe Week held during the year when we hosted Astronomers Haritina Mogoșanu and Sam Leske. We also rounded out a Balanced Scorecard setting four lofty objectives that will be reported on annually: We meet the learning needs of every student - planning and delivering for the diverse needs of our students. We grow trusting relationships - ensuring a strong trusting connection between students, staff and whānau. We foster the importance of learning ensuring our students are best prepared for NCEA Qualifications and achieving their highest possible ability. The students of Oxford Area School continue to exceed expectations, with six of them selected for national sporting representative teams. In addition, two students received National Area School Leadership awards, while another was chosen to join the National Secondary Schools Brass Band.

Tēnā koutou katoa, My name is Aaron Campbell and I am one of your parent trustees elected to the Oxford Area School Board. I am married to Mrs Rachel Campbell who teaches in the year 7 / 8 area and I have two children at the school, one starting year 10 and the other starting year 7, both of whom have been students at the school since being new entrants. In my working life I am a police officer holding the rank of Sergeant supervising one of the frontline Public Safety Teams based out of the Christchurch Central Police Station. My personal interests are grappling martial arts (Judo / Brazilian Jiu Jitsu), running and hunting, however the latter is probably a bit deceptive, more accurately would be taking my firearm for a hike. I'd like to thank you for trusting me to make the right decisions that benefit all of our tamariki in attendance at Oxford Area School. I am currently in my second term as parent trustee having been initially elected to the Board in 2019 and I have just finished my second year as the elected Presiding Member of the Board. Being on the Board of Trustees is something that I find hugely rewarding and I look forward to being your trusted voice on the board for the remainder of this term, and hopefully many more terms to come. Tēnā koutou katoa, my name is Rebecca Griffiths and I have had the privilege of being a parent representative for the past 3 years. I have been associated with the school for over 35 years, having spent my time as a student from J1 to Form 7 and now with my children as students at Oxford Area. My husband Adam and I have 5 wonderful children Harry, Scarlett, Fletcher, Elliott and Primrose. We are fortunate to be able to live on a lifestyle block that has been a part of our family farm for 5 generations. As a family we enjoy the country environment that Oxford provides us, having access to beautiful native bush for walking, rivers for swimming, and participating in Saturday sports.

My name is Erika Jury, I live on a lifestyle block just out of Oxford with my husband Shaun and daughters Isabelle and Maddi. I'm the General Manager for an international flexible co-working and serviced office space company after having spent the last 20 years in media, and we also run a small flock of sheep, have horses and chickens, a cat and a dog on place. Both our girls have been at Oxford Area School since year 1 and we very much love the small rural and community-based feel of OAS coupled with all the opportunities open to the children at all levels. It's very important to me that there is always a solid and clear connection between the school and those invested in its future and I am very passionate about being a part of a team that facilitates that. I love the opportunity to contribute, participate and add value from our experiences and also help foster the important connection between the school, parents, students and community that being on the Board give us. Mark Shelley - I’ve been asked to put a little something together I’m assuming this is so new parents and people that don’t know me well will know a little bit more about me. The first thing you should know is I like to talk, I could talk the ears off an elephant. I’m a family man with four children, three teenagers all have attended the Oxford Area School. I’m a glazier by trade and I love tinkering with things. Hopefully that gives you a little insight on me. My name is Juddy Taylor, married to Rachel who is currently a teacher in the junior school. I have four children who have all attended our school over the 22 years we have lived in Oxford, our youngest is in her final year. I love the thought of hunting and fishing, making the most of our back yard, but only occasionally indulge with such activities. Family has been our main focus over the last 22 years and now we are starting to think what we can do together as the nest empties. I believe in principles of respect, honesty, integrity and the importance of family and would like to see these values kept in our school and community. I have had the privilege of serving as your parent rep for three terms. It is my hope to continue delivering the best for our dedicated team of staff and seeing positive outcomes for all of the children that attend the school through our governance role. Kia ora, I'm Alyssa East, a year 12 student at Oxford Area School. I live just outside of the township of Cust, and am from a larger family of seven, with two brothers who also go to OAS. My role on the board is as student trustee, representing the student voice and providing a student perspective to decision making. Welcome to our new Teaching Staff. Welcome to Philippe McMurdo Ngā mihi manahau ki a koutou, My name is Philippe McMurdo and I have been teaching now for a little over 6 years. I was born and raised in Rangiora but moved out to Oxford nearly 11 years ago where I still live with my wife, Dannielle, and our two young boys, Harrison and Indiana. I have a wide range of interests including fishing, carpentry, music, boxing, performance, cooking, writing short stories, languages and cross-cultural studies. Before teaching I studied Jazz at CPIT and performed at weddings, in cafes, festivals, on the street and in theatre shows. Then I worked as a youth-worker at Rangiora High School for a time where I discovered a passion for working with young people. Following that, I moved into making furniture from recycled materials and spent time in a few different trades before returning to music performance and studying to be a teacher and shortly after, earned my first grey hair. Fernside Primary School is where I have been cutting my teeth for the past 6 years, but I have also continued studying in te Reo Māori (a language that my Mum raised us to speak) through Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. I am beyond excited to begin this new work with Te Kura Poho Rakahua / Oxford Area School and cannot wait to meet the students, their families, the other teachers, and to teach the fantastic world of performing arts. Welcome to our New Library Assistant- Sarah Matthews Kia Ora, Having made myself familiar with Oxford Area School for the past couple of years as a reliever for Yr 1-8 I have returned to take on my dream role as a librarian assistant. As a child, I was an avid reader but it slowly dwindled in adulthood. When I moved to Oxford I wanted to find my passion for reading again and meet some like-minded people so I started a community Bookclub. This has been a wonderful experience and I now cannot keep up with my ‘Want to read’ list. My husband Michael and I have lived in Oxford for 3.5 years and have 3 children, Violet 5, William 2 and Lilly 1. We love being a part of the Oxford community. I am very excited to transition from a teacher's role to a librarian's role in our brand-new building and look forward to sharing my passion for books and getting to know all the students at OAS. Welcome to our New Sports Coordinator - Viktoria Doocey My name is Viktoria, I am originally from Hungary where I gained my P.E. Teacher and Gymnastics Coach qualifications. After finishing university I went to the UK, where I worked as a swimming teacher and a gymnastics coach. I met my husband in London, and after getting married we decided to move back to Canterbury where he is from to start our family. We have two children aged 10 and 8 years old. I have lived and worked in NZ for 11 years now. I have a passion for teaching children, and my mission is to help and promote students' emotional and physical wellbeing and raise the children's interest in sport. Promoting healthy and active life, teaching them important life skills like perseverance and resilience that they can use in other areas of their life, carrying these skills into adulthood. In the last 20 years I have worked as a swimming teacher and a gymnastics coach, both sports I am very passionate about, and I have had the pleasure to pass on some of my passion to the students I have taught. Sport has always played a key role during my entire schooling. Representing my schools in Student Olympiads in various sports such as Gymnastics, Volleyball, Handball and Athletics led me to University. As a dyslexic myself, I found that sports taught me self-confidence, determination and presented me with opportunities that I wouldn’t have achieved otherwise. I am looking forward to being involved in the Oxford Area School’s Sports department as a Sports Coordinator to help the school’s sporting life, getting children involved in different sports, and help making a difference in their lives.

Hello there, As I write this offering, we are enjoying sweltering hot temperatures in Oxford and District and we are all trying to keep as cool as we can. As always, whilst a warm welcome is assured when you visit your Club, the air conditioned Club keeps you nice and cool, just the thing for a hot Canterbury day. The Club recently held a well-attended working bee with Club members assisting Committee members and staff with some overdue tidy up tasks. Thank you to the volunteers who helped on the day, much appreciated. The Club also took the opportunity to bring out of storage framed historic pictures of Committee and past Presidents. The pictures help in preserving the tradition and heritage of the Oxford Club. They also serve as a visual testament of the Club’s journey and the contribution of those who have been part of the Clubs history. These are displayed in the Main Bar. The Sports bar which is having a paint refresh will display sporting pictures and other pictures of interest from the Clubs past. The Club recently ceased operation of the Club Bistro, which has recorded unacceptable financial monthly losses for some time. This was a difficult decision but had to be taken to protect the financial integrity of the Oxford Club now, and in the future. The Bistro will re-open as a leased operation. Expressions of interest will be assessed for the best fit for the operation of the Bistro and our Club membership. The Takeaways are “alive and well” and will in the interim period incorporate and offer some bistro food through the Takeaways. The yummy pizzas are proving very popular also – do try one! As always, our friendly staff will give you, our members and community at large the best possible service and range of product possible under our current circumstances. Bar meals are also available, please check with staff for details. There are still some of our members who are not receiving our weekly email blast which is crammed full of information on what’s happening and activities coming up at our Club. If you are not on our email list, give the Club a call and give them your email so you don’t miss out on any of our Club Member benefits. Well another month has gone by, and this little town is humming along well. Kids are back at school and there is still plenty of warmth in the sun to get outside and enjoy. Yes children are back at school, which means increased foot traffic in the mornings and afternoon so please be mindful of your speed, especially around the pedestrian crossings, school and day cares. Children are so unpredictable, prepare for the unexpected. There has been a sharp increase in burglaries and stolen vehicles in the area, so please report any suspicious behaviours, or anything that looks out of place. We are getting the information but sometimes it’s not being reported in the right way. I know we are not always in the office, and can be difficult to get hold of. So if it’s happening now and there is risk to life or property, call 111. If the incident has already occurred and you have discovered it after the fact, phone 105, or via the internet. There is also the Rural Lookout App which is an easy was to report the information and this will get to us. We are still hearing of the odd party out and about, so I would just like to say be responsible, have a great time, but please don’t drink or consume drugs and drive. It’s not just you on the roads who might be affected by your choices. Once again thanks for reading. Be safe .Feel safe.

With summer in full swing, the weather has been a bit trying with the winds and hot days. Hot days can be a problem for our most vulnerable, the very young and elderly. Remember to try to stay out of the sun during the middle of the day, and drink plenty of water. In the Waimakariri district we have a real issue with unclear and incorrect house numbers making finding people in an emergency frustrating for emergency services and the patient. Time wasted can have an impact on the recovery outcome. Please ensure your house is clearly visible from both directions at the road gate, and on shared driveways at your actual gate. This is also a good time to check your St John membership is still current. A membership for your family is cheap, and covers your family for the year for ambulance callouts. Lastly, a reminder to seek help early if you are concerned regarding a health issue. Don’t wait until the morning as things can deteriorate rapidly.

December was another reasonably busy month for the Brigade. We were asked to assist the Cust Brigade at a fire which was thought to be in the roof of a structure, which was found to be smoke coming from a nearby fire. In our area we were asked to assist St John four times.

Oxford St John is still looking for new recruits to join our team. Being available to support our community on our ambulance as a volunteer is very rewarding. We are a mixed bunch who have created a great team that could always do with new members. Please call the station on 03 312 3516, leave your name and number and our recruiting officer will be in touch. The ambulance station at Oxford is not manned 24 hours a day. In some places the vegetation is getting very dry, so if you are going to mow the dry road side or topping a dry paddock it would be a good idea to leave it until first thing of a morning when there is a bit of dew around so there is less chance of it catching fire.

There were two motor vehicle crashes where in one the driver and passenger received multiple injuries. The driver was extricated using hydraulic cutting equipment and was transported to hospital by the Westpac Helicopter. One to a vegetation fire where a fire was set in a pit and nor-west winds spread the fire to the surrounding vegetation, one false alarm which turned out to be in the Tasman area and one to set up a landing zone for Westpac helicopters. This brings our total calls for 2023 to seventy seven. This months message is;
