Welcome to the February issue of the Observer. We once again find ourselves looking at some uncertain times. The past two years have been challenging, but our community has always supported each other in these times, and will again. Check out the article about volunteering for ways to get involved in the community. While we tried to provide a range of options, we know there will be lots we have missed. Please let us know if you have volunteering opportunities that we can let people know about. Here's to some lovely summer weather over February. We have a beautiful back yard in North Canterbury. When everything feels a bit heavy, there are lots of places to go to recharge and enjoy the outdoors.,

Rare native birds breeding in the upper Ashley - Rakahuri River. by Sarah Ensor Community Ranger - Department of Conservation
As a result of the superb work by the Ashley-Rakahuri River Care Group (ARRG) in protecting rare braided-river birds on the lower Ashley over the last 20 years, these birds are now becoming established in the upper Ashley River. ARRG members surveyed birds from the Okuku River confluence to Ashley Gorge, at the start of the breeding season in November. They were thrilled to record small colonies of black-fronted terns/tarapirohe, as well as breeding pairs of banded dotterels, pied stilts and pied oystercatchers ,along this 20 km stretch of riverbed. Three colonies (ranging from 10 – 25 birds) of the nationally endangered black-fronted terns were found in the first 5 km of the riverbed downstream from Ashley Gorge. Braided-river birds don’t usually nest in the upper Ashley as these birds require clear, open ,shingle riverbed and islands. However, the recent floods, clearing most of the weeds, have now opened new nesting sites. Unfortunately, it’s not just clear shingle required for a successful breeding season; these ground nesting birds are also seriously threatened by predatory rats, stoats, hedgehogs, and cats. If they survive that, then there are people, dogs and 4WD vehicles on the riverbed that can cause them to abandon their nests, or worse, the chicks and eggs are stood on or driven over. Hence many of these unique birds that nest on only braided rivers in Aotearoa, are now classified as threatened to nationally critical. The nests and chicks are not easy to see. ARRG has been protecting them through extensive predator trapping, weed control and public advocacy. Many people will be familiar with their signs, advising people of nearby nesting sites in the lower Ashley River between September to February. ARRG and DOC were aware of a clandestine 4WD event up the Ashley River planned for “Crate Day” on Saturday 4 December. This event has become increasingly popular over the years with over a hundred 4WD vehicles taking part. With awareness of birds now nesting in this area, additional protection and compliance will be required. DOC, ARRG and ECan placed signs at all entrances to the upper Ashley riverbed and close to specific breeding colonies advising of the nesting birds and not to disturb them. Four DOC compliance officers were present with the aim of advising drivers of the location of the nests. They estimated approx. 150 vehicles drove up the river, from the Okuku River bridge to the Ashley River (about 80 made it to Ashley Gorge). Overall they said that most were well behaved and respectful of the birds with only a couple of “loose cannons” amongst them. DOC is also aware of on-going use of the riverbed by locals throughout the year. Breeding season is almost over this year, but the entrance signs will remain in place to remind people of the critical breeding period from November to the end of February. Already some signs have been damaged / removed and even some of the signs by the active nesting colonies have been driven over. We are hopeful all these rare threatened native birds return next breeding season and begin to recover their seriously diminishing populations through the creation of new nesting sites. We are also hopeful that locals will welcome and protect these very precious birds and share the riverbed with them as they will only breed on these habitats. If you want to get involved in monitoring and protecting them, or find out more, please get in touch with ARRG, www.arrg.org.nz. The best website for background on braided riverbed birds and all the local groups protecting them is the BRaid (Braided Rivers website) https://braidedrivers.org/.

It’s time to turn on our Summer Water Use. Let’s change the way we think about how we use water during summer. Keep the WAI in Waimakariri.
Water early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid evaporation.
Take shorter showers. Showering can use up to 18 litres of water a minute.
Keep your sprinkler low – water the grass, not the pavement.
Use a bucket of soapy water and a sponge to clean your car instead of a hose. This can save 10-15 litres of water a minute.

Drink Wine. Save Lives. by Candice Breeze
It almost sounds too good to be true. But you read correctly. Drinking wine can save lives. Well, maybe not all wines, but a special Pinot Noir called Teitei that Alejandra Ruiz from Wild Yeasts will. Project Vino as she likes to call it, is a wine that is made to save lives and bring people back home. She wants her wine to not only be consumed and enjoyed ,but to make a positive difference in society. “I want to help people and organisations that help our community and environment. There’s enough wine out there that is only wine,” says Alejandra. An event that happened on 30 October 2021 is what inspired her to create this wine. She and her best friend were hiking in Arthur’s Pass National Park, and were involved in an accident where her friend tragically lost her life. Oxford LandSAR and Christchurch Alpine Cliff Rescue were involved in the search operation, during the two days of locating her friend. “The dedication and love they put into finding my friend was amazing, and it helped fill up a little gap that was left in my heart when I knew I lost my friend,” she said. When she found out that both of the organisations relied on volunteers, she knew that she wanted to find a way to help repay them for the work they did. Originally from Chile, Alejandra moved to New Zealand in 2010 to study at University. Having a love for wine, and with a degree in Oenology and Viticulture under her belt, she set off to the wine district of Marlborough, and worked at various vineyards in different roles. She also did a stint in France as a vintage winemaker. “I was very shy about my wine at first. I shared it with my friends without telling them it was my wine! Everyone liked it, and at the end of the gathering I would tell them it was my wine. They all encouraged me to create my own company,” says Alejandra. Finally in 2019 she took the plunge and created Wild Yeasts. Loving a challenge and Pinot Noir being her favourite wine. it was only fitting to have that the wine for Project Vino. “My Marlborough Pinot Noir 2020, Teitei is vegan friendly, with bright red fruit notes, very Marlborough in style, with a pleasing light tannin extraction and great length. It’s a Pinot that could be consumed at a natural temperature but also chilled.” Alejandra plans on also creating a Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and a Syrah with plans on donating in the future to Civil Defence and St John. If you’d like to purchase a bottle of Teitei 2020 Pinot Noir, $10.00 of every bottle sold will go to Oxford LandSAR and Christchurch Alpine Cliff Rescue. You can buy them at VinoFino online or in store at Christchurch. Or you can go to https://www.thewildyeasts.com/ and click on ‘Project Vino’ . To keep up to date with new wines that will save lives, you can check out Wild Yeasts on Instagram @thewildyeasts.

Look at you 2022. by Kerri Booth
Look at you 2022, rolling on in and none of us really knowing how to feel about you. Everyone seems to be a little tentative this year, to really shout any big plans from the roof tops. The platform that we used to stand on to shout has become a little shaky, and seems to be able to move at any moment causing us to have to constantly re-think. My brain and energy levels take a pounding under this regime and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one. Realising this makes me see how my brain and energy are prime real estate and I need to look after them as much as I can. Last year we sold our house and in the interim while building, we have had to downsize. That means I have cut my wardrobe down by a half. Now contrary to belief, I don’t actually have a huge wardrobe to begin with and I am not shy of a good cull BUT I am loving having even less once again. Sometimes I say it so much that I forget the power in the talk, but honestly Less is More and if you have ‘more’ you have to love all those pieces otherwise it's just clutter. Make it a goal to pull out everything from your wardrobe. Then spring clean it! Make it a beautiful clean space to be in. That is a game changer in itself. I want you to put everything back in and hang the coat hangers all one way. Now everytime you wear something, you put it back in the other way. This is a visual, to show you, what you are actually wearing and not kidding yourself into thinking you are when you aren’t. It is so refreshing having items of clothes that actually fit and you actually like. I always find it so interesting that we buy the same thing over and over again. Many a wardrobe that I’ve rummanged in has produced items in the same style, cut, colour. Such an easy habit to fall into. So even though this year may not be the year of huge announcements, it could be the year of small changes, that when we come to the end of the year and look back, we see it all added up to a big change. I’m down with that. Me old mate Benjamin Franklin's mentioned that "Failing to plan, is planning to fail”. We can plan small changes and we can own them. Right 2022 we see you and we got you.

I’m sure by now most of us are back to work and holding on to the memories of our summer holidays. I have enjoyed spending a quiet time around Waimakariri. We are fortunate to have everything we need on our doorstep. It has also been a good time to prepare for the year ahead which is going to be busy. One of the first items on my agenda is to continue advocating for a better outcome from the Government’s mandated Three Waters Reform. The Government’s model creates four large water companies that will take over all the $60-billion of water assets built and paid for by generations of New Zealand ratepayers. These will become four of the largest companies in New Zealand, rivalling Fonterra in size. This asset grab takes all the rights of property ownership from the current owners and gives them to the water companies – removing community say over how our water assets are used to achieve health and environmental goals. Waimakariri District Council is one of the founding members of a new group called Communities 4 Local Democracy - He hapori mō Manapori, which is committed to advocating for a better reform outcome for New Zealanders than is currently mandated. I am the Deputy Chair of this group. We are made up of 24 councils and counting, and represent more than a million New Zealanders – from large metropolitan to small rural areas. We are an action group committed to fresh ideas for better water. We launched in December in Wellington and formally presented our collective opposition to the mandated four entity model of Three Waters Reform to the Government’s Working Group on Representation Governance and Accountability (RGAWG), Opposition political parties and the Minister of Local Government, the Hon Nanaia Mahuta herself. Following these constructive meetings, we have been invited to present our alternative models to the RGAWG, and to the Minister, which is encouraging. We have been working with international consulting firm Castalia to develop alternative models. We will present these to the RGWAG in late January and to the Government in February. Following these presentations we will then release our findings publicly so there is true transparency about alternatives that will better serve New Zealand in the long term. I will make sure to keep you posted on our progress and key milestones as we continue the campaign. There’s a lot more on the Council’s work programme this year, including preparation of our draft Annual Plan which will come out to you for your views in March. I am looking forward to the year ahead. As always, I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue that you may want to discuss. Email me at dan.gordon@ wmk.govt.nz or phone 021906437. I’m here to help. Dan

Camping at Wooded Gully. by Daisy Harris - age 10
Tucked away in the foothills of Glentui, lies the beautiful river, walking tracks, campground and views of Wooded Gulley. The river, with all the rocks creating rapids throughout, sparkling in the sun, was very clean and so was the campsite but when we went camping there, the river was ice cold. We still went in, long enough to cool down on these stunning summer days. It was fun to stack some rocks up to make the water into deeper pools. My family has camped at Wooded Gully twice now. When we were camping we heard many wood pigeons and watched as the fantails fluttered by. We also found a secret track right next to our tent. I think this is a great place to camp and I highly recommend going to Wooded Gully to both adventurous people and people that just want to relax in the sun. The campground is beautiful with lots of different walking tracks and is an easy twenty five minute drive from Oxford, to Glentui. The walking track is a 5.6KM lightly trafficked loop trail. You can also access the Mt Thomas tracks from here. The campground has no bathroom or kitchen, but it does have two toilets in the toilet block. Dogs are allowed, but on walks they need to be on a leash. You can camp in a tent or caravan but there are no plugs for campervans. The Campground does not accept reservations and it is first-come first-served. The self-register at the pay station is next to the toilet when you arrive at the campground. The price to camp is $8 for adults eighteen and older and $4 for children 5-17. So, If you're feeling adventurous, bored, stressed or just want to get away without breaking the bank, I think the 25 minute drive to Wooded Gully is worth it. Go explore Oxford's hidden gem and create memories with your own family. Recommendation - take a hammock o sling between the trees for a relaxing place to read a book.

Principals Update
Introducing our Student Leaders
As a community, we align our learning and skills, showing how extraordinary we are. We identify the bright shining stars in the Oxford night sky as being something unique to us.
Amy Riach
Our vision is three connected parts: Kāhui Whetū - The collection (constellation) of stars. Joining together as one group, where each star has a relationship with one another, connected as a community. This phrase is used to express the connections as we grow alongside each other, with each other, together. Tātai Whetū - Aligning the stars (getting your ducks in a row). Putting together the learning and skills. This phrase is used to express all the learning that takes place in the learning journey. Rau Whetū - This refers to the hundred stars. From the expression “taumata rau”, meaning “extraordinary”. This phrase is used to express the success, achievements that make us shine together. Together the three phrases mean: “As a community, we align our learning and skills, showing how extraordinary we are.” In order to reach this vision we have been working on three specific areas over the past two years, as part of our strategic plan: - Grow together - through thriving connected communities: family, school, community and the world - Learn together - through pioneering and collaborative learning, where we are future focused, learning in an authentic way with and from one another - Shine together - through courage, success and pride we will shine. We will be prepared to take risks as we seek excellence, and celebrate our achievements fostering pride in ourselves, each other and our school. The graphic shows how the maunga/mountains (our strategic plan) connect the whenua/land (our values, who we are) with the sky (our vision, who we aspire to be)
As the new year begins, we are all looking forward to what 2022 might bring, and our goals for this year include a focus on fostering the relationships across all our year groups. As an Area school, we are uniquely positioned to develop these relationships between our youngest students and our oldest, and for me one key goal this year would be to increase the opportunities for whole school events. Already we have a few school wide events which are undertaken annually, such as our House Day, and it would be great to develop those further. All age groups throughout our school have a lot to offer the other, and we would love to make the most of that in the coming year. Our houses particularly are focused on bringing us all together, and they provide an opportunity to strengthen those inter-school relationships, something which we look forward to working towards this year.
Cailey Hollard As the Student Leadership Team for 2022, we have already begun discussion about our individual aspirations for the school year and where these personal goals may overlap, allowing us to pinpoint a number of collective goals for 2022. As a team we are all very invested in supporting our peers, and allowing them to take pride in our school’s community and achievements as well as our well established relationships with other Area Schools. We hope that our goals in 2022 enable us to maintain our reputation as a school that really values the connections we have both within, and outside of, OAS. One of our clear goals for this coming year is to focus on strengthening the inter-school relationships we have with other Area Schools across the Canterbury region in order to create the framework needed to support the introduction of even more academic, cultural, and sporting opportunities in which students at Oxford Area School can continue to expand relationships that will last beyond school. It is really important to us all that we strive to reinforce the amazing connections our peers have with other Area School students so that they can be carried on well after we have left Oxford Area School.
Zara Frahm Our school takes pride in the fact that we are so full of students who all come from a variety of different backgrounds, and are passionate about so many different things. As an area school we are able to cater to very different ages, and everyone has different levels of confidence. For me as a student leader this year it's a really big focus for us as a team to work towards creating ample opportunities for a variety of Oxford Area School students. This means meeting students where they are at in terms of individual confidence and readiness to put themselves out there, and providing support in a wide range of fields; whether that be academic, sporting, cultural, or even interpersonal, so that people have the opportunity to be their best, and to strive for a greater overall sense of participation and confidence in their own capabilities.
Ashleigh Lawler Over the last couple of years, many school sports teams were scheduled to compete in competitions all over Canterbury and the South Island. However due to Covid 19 these inter-school competitions were called off. As a result of the cancellation of these events, we saw a decline of interest in some of our sports teams, especially the school netball team. Being an Area School, and looking to focus more on fostering relationships within our school community, it would be great to look at growing the enthusiasm and participation in these events once again, and increasing interest in school teams through a senior/ junior buddy system to focus on coaching new players through. One main goal for me this year would certainly be ensuring these events can continue long after we leave school. Mr Hart talks a lot about legacy and I feel that this is something very important to me that I would like to see carried on in the future.

Welcome to our New Staff Richard Halliwell Kia Ora. My name is Richard Halliwell. On January 1st 2021, my wife and our two daughters stepped out of MIQ having just emigrated from COVID locked down UK two weeks before. Since then, we have been acclimatizing to the Kiwi way of life with the help and support of my in-laws who live nearby. Before coming to New Zealand I was a class teacher, Design and Technology leader and Forest School Leader in the beautiful Cotswolds in the Southwest of the UK. I have a keen interest in both listening to and playing music, and not being built for rugby, I enjoy cycling and most racket sports. My other interests include being an avid Formula One fan and wood turning.I have spent the past year working at the Maukatere Technology Centre in Rangiora, teaching Woodwork, Food Technology, Textiles and Computational Thinking. I am very excited to be joining the team at Oxford Area School and am looking forward to meeting and working with the engineers, craftspeople, designers, inventors and innovators of tomorrow.
Rachael Elliott Kia ora! My name is Rachael Elliott. I am passionate about creating a fun, inclusive learning environment. After completing a Bachelor of Teaching and Learning from the University of Canterbury in 2020, my family and I moved from Christchurch to Oxford for a lifestyle change, which has enabled me the opportunity to be able to enjoy walking, kayaking, quad biking, and camping at the weekends with friends and family. Since moving to Oxford, I have had a wonderful opportunity to work as a relief teacher at Oxford Area school, and I am excited to start my journey as a teacher in a year 4 class.
Ella Wallace Kia ora koutou, In the past two years I have spent a bit of time in Oxford and have always found it to be a special place. The scenery, the art gallery, Café 51 and boutiques shops to name a few of the things I love. But what has always stood out to me most is the kind and caring people and community of Oxford. Because of this community, I am most excited to be joining the team at Oxford Area School! A little about me. My name is Ella, and I was born and raised in Christchurch. I am passionate about performing arts and love to sing, act and dance. I am thrilled to be able to share that joy with my students in 2022 as a drama teacher at OAS. Moreover, I love books and I can’t wait to get into some English teaching!! (I’m in a book club called the Viking Hunters Book Club. Yep, I’m that cool). Aside from performing, reading, and teaching, you can catch me spending quality time with friends and whanau, walking hills or in a garden admiring the flowers (I’m lowkey obsessed with flowers). I am so grateful to be joining such an amazing team at OAS – I already feel so welcome and I look forward to being apart of the Oxford community. Ngā mihi nui,
Frank Dwyer Kia ora! No Ōtautahi ahau Ko Dwyer te whānau Ko Frank tōku ingoa Hello! My name is Frank Dwyer, and I’m from Christchurch. I’m thrilled to be joining the Oxford Area School whānau where I will be teaching English (and some Physical Education). I recently completed my Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning at the University of Canterbury, where I also received my Bachelors of Arts in 2018 in Media & Communication and English. I’m an avid reader, runner, beginner surfer and I love exploring the outdoors - hiking and camping. I spent a couple of seasons working at a Summer Camp for boys in New Jersey, USA, where I ran the rock climbing wall and the giant zip line. Feel free to ask me about it if you want me to chat your ear off. Bring on 2022, Patua te taniwha!
Megan Lowen Kia Ora I'm Megan Lowen and I will be teaching in the Year 7&8 syndicate this year. My background specializes in Outdoor Education, Exercise Prescription, Sport Management and Social Studies. I have previously taught in Melbourne, Marlborough and here at Oxford Area School. I took two years out to develop our family business and enjoy time with my children. My two daughters now attend Oxford Area School so I'm excited to be returning to familiar territory, getting to know everyone again and enhancing the learning of our tamariki

Countdown to the Oxford Schools Jubilee by Amy Riach
As we all move into 2022, and prepare for at least 3 months of writing the date down wrongly, the new year promises to be a very significant one for Oxford Area school. 2022 marks the 150th anniversary of the school, and this year during Labour weekend, Oxford will be hosting the 150th Oxford Schools Jubilee. The name is a nod to the history of our school, which began as many individual schools spread across the district, before they combined to form first the Oxford District High, and later Oxford Area school. Plans for the anniversary are already underway, and chief organiser Mary Chisnall is beginning to put together some fantastic ideas, saying the Jubilee is “ all about showcasing where we’ve come from, and where we’re going”. Mary was offered the role by Oxford principal Mike Hart, and tells me “I was really happy to accept the project. I’m up for a challenge!” Mary is extending an open invitation to the community, but also to the past students and teachers of Oxford. She says that “Teachers can be a big part of a student's pathway, so it’s exciting to see where they end up”, and she has plans to give past students an opportunity to speak briefly about where they are in their lives and careers now. Mary herself will recognise many former pupils and staff, having taught at Oxford for many years, and in fact she was a key part of the committee which put together Oxford’s last jubilee 25 years ago. A lot has changed since then, but Mary says she really wants the community “to see we’ve embraced change”, and with plans for a new build on the horizon, a building site backdrop will certainly speak to the changes that are still underway. The curriculum is also changing this year, and 2022 marks the introduction of an initiative designed to teach more NZ History in the classroom. Mary is highly excited that the jubilee will coincide with an expanded NZ History curriculum, and she calls it “a perfect opportunity”. Already she is looking to incorporate the history of the Oxford township into the jubilee, and with plans to engage classes in the months before the anniversary, she is looking all the way back to the foundation of New Zealand and Maori settlement, saying “The school can really embrace all that history”. She goes on to declare that she is “Really excited for the school to be so highly involved”, and with the year ahead to prepare, even 10 months out the jubilee is looking sure to be a wonderful anniversary. The jubilee will be celebrated on the Friday and Saturday of Labour weekend, so Mary is extending a reminder to save the date. We are looking forward to seeing the Oxford community come along, and Mary says that she highly values the community’s input. She tells me that “Schools have always been a very important part of the community, and we have a real opportunity to engage with our community”. So mark your calendars, and we look forward to seeing some familiar faces back at Oxford come October! If there is anyone in our community who would be interested in working on a committee to help organise the event, please reach out to Mary at the email address jubilee@oxford.school.nz. There will also be a public meeting held in February, and all details can be found at the Facebook page Oxford Schools 150 Years Jubilee.

Summer Show at Oxford Gallery toi o Waimakariri
by Candice Breeze
This summer Oxford Gallery toi o Waimakariri has had an explosion of colour within its gallery, from a variety of artists. The group exhibition had artworks by Kevin Bull, Miranda Brown, Jann Collins, Sue Currie, Jo Ogier, Marilyn Rea-Menzies, Adrienne Rewi, Paul Smith, Soon-Lee Spicer, Charlotte van Eekelen and Kris Waldin. The collection had a range of summer and beachy vibes, with the artists using an array of different mediums from paints, fabric, weaving, mixed media, and tapestry. A few of my favourites would have been by Charlotte van Eekelen, who had a series of art that used textiles, patterns, colours, materials and embroidery that really bought her art to life. Her artwork had a 3D element that stood out to me. Her three pieces are titled ‘Your Place’, ‘Bunny Love’ and ‘Rainy Day’. She began this style of art after being inspired by her 8 year old (at the time) son's cartoon superhero drawings that were sadly lost in the Christchurch Earthquakes. Another one that caught my eye was the work of Sue Currie, who used rich hues of purples, blues and magentas in her beautiful landscape paintings.
What I loved about her work, is that from far away it looks like intricate fine art, but when you look up close you realise that her artwork is in fact mixed media, where she uses, what appears to be tape and other pieces of paper, and paints over them to create interesting textures in her artwork. Her series of three paintings were influenced be her surroundings in Charteris Bay.
The last piece that really captured me was an art print by Miranda Brown. Waves of emerald green, which to me appeared to look like golden trees of life, in the shape of lungs, that gives the piece life. In her artist statement she states that ‘Emerald Garden’ is where dreams are woven into formation, anchored into our hearts bringing goodness into the world, nourishing and celebrating all life for future generations.
These are only a few of 11 artists that were on show in the gallery over Summer, whilst this exhibition has now come to an end, a new exhibition is now up, head over to Oxford Gallery toi o Waimakariri to check out the latest exhibition from local artists. twenty one
Lions Club
of Oxford & Districts A report by President Phil Bay I frequently get asked two questions. 1.What have Lions been doing? or 2. What are they going to do? Supporting Others: The Lions have been able to do several things, such as help at the Young Farmers Ball, thank you to Chris Watts and his team for inviting us to assist. We provided marshals for the Bridge-to-Bridge cycle race. At the Oxman event we had marshals, as well as the food caravan in attendance. It was great to be part of this major event which was a credit to the organisers. We have contributed to, and helped on the Ashley Gorge walkway. The Lions Club also has a representative on OPAC, who like us, want to contribute to what is best for our district. The development of youth is a major part of Lionism, as well as our club. We were able to help Oxford Junior Rugby with the purchase of equipment more suitable to their age groups. For the last four years the club has provided two scholarships per year to Oxford Area School pupils. It has been most rewarding to see how the students have developed resulting from the awards. Last year in collaboration with the Oxford Community Trust, we donated forty cord of firewood, and will have a similar amount this year. The Lions also have firewood for sale with the proceeds being used in the community. We manage the Toot for Tucker collection in the Oxford township. As part of the Christmas spirit, we take Santa along with a couple of helpers, to visit both Karadean and the Oxford Hospital giving each of the residents a present. Every year the Oxford Lions donate to Santa Claus Charitable Workshop Trust in Christchurch. A group of retired people work through the year making toys. At Christmas Lions clubs are given the wooden toys to distribute to those in need in their communities. We were given 50 toys last Christmas. Our major project for the year, is supplying fresh produce to Satisfy Food Rescue based in Kaiapoi which is then distributed to charities in North Canterbury. Like us they have a number of volunteers that help with this work. In 2021 we supplied 14500 kgs of produce, mainly potatoes and pumpkins. We were awarded best Lions project in NZ in 2021 and came second in Lions Constitutional Area 7, competing against clubs from Australia and Indonesia. Our work in this area can be a family affair with wives, partners and children helping. This is an ongoing project that is still expanding. Without the help, and sometimes sacrifices by our families, we could not do what we do and are extremely grateful for their support. Looking ahead to the next few months the main events are: The Coast to Coast where we have our food caravan below the Waimakariri Gorge Bridge. Annual Charity Golf Tournament. 2021 Charity Golf tournament supported the Oxford Community Men’s Shed as well as Diabetes Youth Canterbury (for youth with Type 1 Diabetes) The tournament this year is on March 25th. This is a very good fundraiser and our biggest day of the year. At the end of play we have a charity auction along with a happy hour for sponsors and participants. The Lions are starting to rumble with excitement already. This year’s proceeds are going to Canterbury West Coast Daffodil House and Oxford Community Trust project - Violence Free North Canterbury. Our club has forty members, five of which are women who are a very important part of the club. As you can see, the club is a busy one, and we always need more members. Come along and enjoy.

We are seeking an experienced, organised, and collaborative Board Secretary to support our voluntary Board of Directors, who are responsible for the governance of the Health Centre, which is owned by a charitable trust. The role has a level of autonomy and self-management; applicants will need to be driven and able to manage deadlines, but who also enjoy working as part of a supportive team. You will be the key contact to our Board Chair and Board members. Board Meetings are largely held monthly, with core companies and charities administration outside these meetings over the year. This is a contract role, where you will invoice the Health Centre for your time. Market-rates payable. We estimate this being on average 5-8 hours a month. explore the Solar System with the Oxford Observatory. by Beka Hunt
From its creation, the Oxford Observatory has been a gateway to the stars. Now, the township amenity is bringing another angle on the universe, in the form of a Modern Astronomy course. A success in its previous years, the course commences on February the 15th, and begins with ‘Exploring our Solar System’. Participants will learn about our immediate neighbourhood in the Universe, moons, asteroids, planets, recently discovered ‘extra-solar visitors’- and that’s only the first 8 weeks! The course consists of 4 parts and follows the format of a school year, with topics ‘Leaving the Solar System’, ‘Exploring the Milky Way’ and ‘Going Deep’ set to be taught over the next 3 terms. Due to this, it’s recommended that an interested person should view them as a trilogy- each area taught uncovers another. To make the classes accessible to all, the course is held on Zoom, and will be on Tuesday nights, 7pm to 9pm. The man behind the course, Erik Vermaat, has always been passionate about science, teaching physics and calculus at Oxford Area School before retirement. It wasn’t until the Observatory was created out of a telescope and an idea that Erik discovered the joy of astronomy. Now, he has created an entire website (ngawhetu.com) with years of astronomy research and resources for anyone to find. On top of this, he uses his knowledge to continue expanding the knowledge of others. The Ngā Whetū website explains that “education in general is one of the most important tasks in our society, because this gives the young generation the basis they need to take their responsibility to shape the future.” With this vision in mind, Erik has been fine tuning his 4 part course since 2017, dissecting and explaining the inner workings of space. “I’m not going away from real science, but explaining it in real English.” Due to this, he hopes to encourage all ages to sign up. “It’s our universe, so in a sense, everyone owns it and is entitled to know the basics. I really love it when parents bring their children along.” Erik will be hosting the Zoom calls alongside co-host, Easwaran Krishnaswami - AKA Iceman. Whether you're an adult who has always wondered at the stars, a student trying to discover your passions, or a child that wants to understand how it all works, this course could be for you. Each term is only $60, which covers 7 to 8 weeks of content. Registrations for ‘Exploring our Solar System’ close February 8th. Positions are filling fast, so if you're interested, head to https://oxford.ngawhetu.nz and follow the instructions under ‘theory courses, enrolment.’ This is just the beginning of a busy year in the Observatory, so watch this space! https://oxford.ngawhetu.nz (Oxford Observatory Website) https://ngawhetu.com (Eriks Astronomy Website)

Well another month has gone by, and there are only a few days till the kids are back at school and back to normal. I hope. Yes we are here again, but it’s nothing we have not been through before. We have gotten through this many times before. We have a great wee community, that is great at helping each other out. So let’s keep that in mind. Keep an eye out on your neighbours, and if you can’t check in on them, but have some concerns, then let us, or one of the many other people in our community that could lend a hand, know. It has been busy the past month, with cars being broken into. Burglaries are still occurring. Some are being reported, and others are not. A reminder on reporting. 111 if there is something happening now where people or property are in danger. If it has already occurred, then it’s 105, either via phone or on the internet. Any traffic offending can be reported via *555. On another note, please slow down. There are far too many people speeding. It is not a race track. With kids starting school, there will be more of our precious ones walking the streets. Be aware at all times of your surroundings. Last but not least, a big shout out to Ron Ealam for his service to the community through his work in the fire service. It’s a huge commitment to roll out time after time after time, and expect nothing in return. From both Aden and I, a big thanks goes out to all the fire service in both the Cust and Oxford areas that are out there keeping us safe. It would be a lot tougher for us if you were not out there with us.
AMBULANCE
FIRE RESCUE
Until next time. Be safe. Feel safe.
December ended up being a very quiet month for the Brigade with only four calls. Most welcomed by our members. One call was to assist the Cust Brigade at a shed fire. In our area we were called to investigate smoke (which we could not locate) that was seen in the Ashley Gorge, Glentui area. One to an unattended rubbish fire that was causing concern and was extinguished and the other was to investigate the smell of smoke which we were unable to pin point, in a flat. This brings the grand total of calls for the year to ninety eight. Recently the Brigade accepted an application from Katie Hallam to become a firefighter. The brigade currently has three recruit firefighters.
Oxford Chief Fire Officer
This month'`s message is; Never underestimate the speed of fire. Get out and stay out. A house fire can kill you in less than five minutes.
Trevor Ealam I hope you all managed to have a nice time over the Christmas break and spent time doing what you enjoy. Welcome to 2022 and another uncertain start to the year, with Covid lurking around. With schools due to go back, it is a good time to remember to be aware of our young people around our community schools. Slow down when passing school buses (20km either way when passing a school bus). You never know when a little person could run out from behind a hedge or bus. Please remember the show grounds are private property and Showgate Drive often has young children walking around, so please keep the speed down there also. We really do need some more recruits to join our great team. If you would like to learn more please ring the station on 033123516, leave your name and number, and our recruiting officer will be in touch. A huge thank you to Oxford Indian Hut for your amazing support throughout the month of January with your fabulous idea of 'Humpday for Heros' Look after yourselves and keep checking on your neighbours.
