Get out & about this Summer Shaz Davis shares local walking tracks

JANUARY 2021 Happy New Year to you all! Hopefully by the time this issue is in letterboxes we will be finally enjoying some summer weather. If 2020 taught us anything, it is that we have far less control than we think! We, like many others, feel less sure than usual about heading into the New Year. But, just in case things do go more to plan this year, we have been spending some time thinking about the future, and making plans for the Observer for 2021, which we hope will enhance our magazine. There is an exciting event in the community this month – The Oxford Community Trust and Oxford & Districts Lions have teamed up to bring a “Wings with Wheels Event” on January 24th. Check out the article and advertisement on page 8.

New Forestry & Outdoors business opens in Oxford words & photo by Shaz Davis

Check them out online at www.klotzforestryandoutdoors.com pop in at 58 Victoria Street, or call Ollie on 027 885 7150. Ollie and Sera Klotz moved to Oxford from Nelson in the middle of winter last year, and they’ve been hard at work setting up a forestry and related outdoor equipment store, that sells online and to the general public.

ABOUT CEMETERIES

Ollie is the face of Klotz Forestry and Outdoors. He has had several roles that focused on logging and related machinery in the Richmond and Nelson areas, and says his all-time favourite job was working at the Stihl Shop, which made it a logical call to open a forestry and safety equipment business. They stock a range of chain saws, outdoor power tools and safety equipment, as well as hunting and fishing knives, fishing rods, outdoor clothing and torches, to list just a few… If it is outdoors-related and they don’t stock it, they would be happy to order it in. “The hunting and fishing side works well with our forestry focus. Almost every logger is also a hunter or fisherman, and we’re still figuring out what people would like us to stock,” says Ollie. Sera is more behind the scenes. She packs orders, does the invoicing and, most importantly, pays the bills. It was Sera’s love of animals that prompted their move to Oxford. She had two horses and a sheep in Nelson, and now that they’ve got more land, she’s already added pigs and cows to the growing family.

We’ve developed a draft Cemetery Policy to guide how Council cemeteries are managed day-to-day and want to hear what you think. It covers things like: • Installation and maintenance of memorial headstones • Grave decoration • Gravesite and cemetery maintenance • Reservation of ashes or burial plots Feedback will open after the holidays, from Friday 15 January.

When they’re not focused on their new business, they spend time with their young nearly-six-year-old daughter, Payton, and enjoy camping and fishing.

Let us know what you think before Monday 15 February 2021.

You will also find them working out at Oxford’s gym, and taking part in powerlifting competitions or relaxing at the beach.

Find out more at waimakariri.govt.nz/letstalk

Ollie and Sera are interested in actively networking with, and promoting, other Oxford small businesses, such as handyman or mowing services. four

New Year is always a good time to reflect – what went well last year, what didn’t and to ask, “What could I do better next time?” For me it’s also important to take a moment to reflect on the things for which I’m grateful – friends, family, good health, food on the table and a roof over my head. This is particularly important in light of the tough year that it was for many in 2020. Personally, I’m also grateful

for a job I absolutely love – helping people to buy and sell homes. So to those who trusted me last year, THANK YOU for inviting me to be a part of your journey. It never ceases to bring me joy when first, second or third home buyers are delighted with their new purchase, and my sellers are over the moon with their result. From a real estate point of view, I’m also grateful the market is still pumping, despite the pandemic. So to everyone who was a part of my business last year, read my articles, or

even just waved a friendly hello in the street, thank you. I’m grateful to be a part of our wonderful community. If you’re thinking of selling in 2021, please get in touch as soon as possible. I’m putting together marketing plans for the first quarter and although the market is running hot, who knows how long it will last. Make the most of it. Get the ball rolling now. Wishing you and yours a happy New Year and prosperous 2021.

Take a hike

words and photos by Shaz Davis

There are many benefits to getting outdoors. It is not only affordable but offers an accessible and gentle form of exercise that almost anyone can enjoy. The side effects of connecting with nature are that it can help to reduce stress and improve your mood, along with building your fitness too. Here in North Canterbury, we are spoilt for choice with a large range of short and long walks right on our doorstep, or up to 90-minutes drive away.

Short walks The Mears Track just outside Oxford on Crallans Drain Road offers a short loop track (20 – 30 mins) through native bush. There are lots of sidetracks, but it would be hard to get lost. Although it starts with some stairs, the Ashley Gorge Loop Track (30 mins) starting at the Ashley Gorge Holiday Park, offers a gentle stroll on a well-graded path, through forest with a range of indigenous trees. Take the slightly rougher Waterfall Track to extend the walk to 90 minutes. The Glen Tui Loop Track in the Mt Thomas Forest Conservation Area, is a 2km loop through the forest with a few short steep sections. It should take up to an hour to walk at a casual pace with frequent stops. A visit to the amazing giant limestone rock formations at Castle Hill, gives you the option to stroll amongst the large boulders to find a scenic spot and enjoy a picnic. For something slightly more challenging, why not give the walk through the limestone river caves at Cave Stream near Castle Hill a go? You will need a good torch for each person, a sense of adventure, and a towel and dry clothes to change into back at the car. It is one of my personal favourites and takes about an hour all up (30 mins for the 600m-long cave part). It is best in summer, dependent on water levels, and requires company and a bit of clambering. It would not be suitable for small children, or anyone with a fear of dark enclosed spaces.

Half-day walks The Ryde Falls track in the Oxford Forest Conservation Area is a pleasant half-day walk. Choose the View Hill car park start for a shorter walk (3-4 hours return), or the Coopers Creek start for a longer walk (6 hours return). With the longer option, you can join up with the Link Track between the two car parks to make a loop. Trig M is a relatively easy uphill walk with stunning views over Lake Lyndon. The shorter and easier route of 6km return starts at Starvation Gully, just west of the top of Porters Pass and would take about 3 hours return, or a little longer if uphills are not something you do every day. For hardier hikers add on an off-route section to Rabbit Hill, or start below Porters Pass at Coach Stream instead. Foggy Peak is not for the unfit or faint-hearted. Start at the view stop parking at the top of Porters Pass, and follow the pole markers up the scree slope for 2km. It is a relentless slog up 800m which takes 2 - 3 hours up – and about an hour down. The views are spectacular, with the option for more adventurous trampers to continue to Castle Hill Peak. Hiking poles are recommended for the descent. Helicopter Hill from the Craigieburn picnic area is a 5km return trip. It starts through forest up to Lyndon Saddle, and then breaks out of the treeline for worthwhile views. It would take about 2 hours up and a little over an hour down. six

The Craigieburn area has a number of other walking and mountain bike trails, that are perfect for a half-day adventure. The Hogs Back Track has the perfect mix of forest and views and the Dracophyllum Flat Track is another favourite of mine. They’re both roughly 6km one way. For the more adventurous, the Middle Hut car park on the Mt Cheeseman skifield road gives easy access to the tops. Follow the path up to the skifield, and venture off-route to Mt Cockayne or Mt Cheeseman. If you’re headed out towards Amberley, Mt Grey is a pleasant halfday walk. Choose the fire lookout route from Lake Janet for the shorter, easier option, or head up from the Grey River picnic area and down via the Red Beech Track for a longer harder walk.

Longer walks The walk into Pinchgut Hut from Taaffes Glen Road in Loburn, is an easy 7km or 3-4 hours one way, making it a pleasant day walk or an easy overnight option. There are Mt Richardson and Mt Thomas as training warm-ups for Mt Oxford. As well as overnight options including Wharfedale Hut, Black Hill Hut and Bob’s Biv and Youngman's Stream Hut and Tarn Hut in the Puketeraki Forest Conservation Area. Peak Hill is an enjoyable day walk with a 640m ascent and to-die-for views of Lake Coleridge. The Craigieburn area has many off-route walks for hikers competent in navigation, such as Red Hill, Cloudy Peak, Hamilton Peak and Mt Cloudsley without having to travel as far as Arthurs Pass

The Lions have scholarships and sponsor young people on trips such as Outward Bound, Spirit of Adventure etc, and also help people in the community by providing practical support. The Oxford Community Trust provides social service assistance including food parcels, advocacy, youth events and holiday programmes.

Two local community groups, the Oxford Community Trust and Oxford and Districts Lions have teamed up to bring an exciting event to Oxford on January 24th. Wheels with Wings is set to be “a car show with a difference,” says one of the organisers Dave McPherson. It will be at Oxford Airfield on Browns Road, Oxford, which offers a lot of room, but also a lovely environment with trees and places for picnics.

Dave says “We want everybody to have a great time. We want families to be able to come, to wander round, buy some food, have a picnic and enjoy themselves”.

Classic and vintage car clubs are invited to take the drive out to Oxford, ending up at the Airfield, where there will be a display of 15-20 planes, stalls and food.

The Oxford Collie Club will be celebrating it’s centenary with two days’ of sheepdog trials, over the 30th and 31st of January 2021, at the club grounds at 49 Dog Trail Road in Burnt Hill, near Oxford. Prior to forming the club 100 years ago, the closest club was in Sheffield. Locals apparently tired of travelling and decided to form a local Oxford club, but sadly a lot of the early records were lost in a fire in 1958. The first local trials were run on Starvation Hill, and then moved to Ashley Gorge for a few years, until the club ran into financial difficulties. They moved to a location in Burnt Hill on a ridge on the northwest side until “the owners got tired of competitors ruining their privacy and driving through their yard”, says Graeme Petrie, who served as club secretary for a period of 21 years. The club’s trial grounds had one final move to its current location on Dog Trail Road. The bright-red Cook House was built in the late 1940s, and extended in 1957 to accommodate the national New Zealand Sheep Dog Championships in 1958. Food was cooked by wives over coal ranges, and served at large trestle tables in the Cook House. Graeme explained that the dog trials used to run over three days in late April and May when all the shepherds had finished mustering mobs from the hill country for winter, so all the shepherds could get a run.

The Oxford Collie Club, with the help from nearby sister clubs, such as the Loburn Collie Club, has had the honour of also hosting the 1999 South Island Championships and the 2004 National Cham pionships. In the early days at the Burnt Hill club grounds, they used sheep from the farm. “When the trials got more popular and entries got bigger, they used half-bred Woodstock wethers from Woodstock station with great success,” says Graeme. “Then they used Romney rams and the offspring were quite piggy and wouldn’t climb,” he says, referring to the requirement for the dogs to chase the sheep through an uphill course. “For the two recent championships, sheep were driven out from Mr Stokes’ Lees Valley property and sheep from Mr Feary’s at View Hill and Mr Scott’s at Burnt Hill were also used,” says Graeme. The Oxford Collie Club has about 12 committee members, and eight-to-ten active competitors. The trials at the end of January will also attract competitors from further afield. Anyone interested in watching the trials is welcome to head out to the club on either day to see the sheepdogs in action.

Lorinda Harrington

Competitors came to the trials from as far afield as Marlborough and South Canterbury. The trials used to follow each other moving from Loburn, to Oxford, to Sheffield and so on.

Independant Registered Financial Advisor

The trials have changed with farming practices, and are now held earlier in the year over two days.

Second hand

Style

with Kerri Booth

January 2021

Hello to you 2021! Let’s hope you aren’t quite the same as 2020 was. What do you reckon the fashion trends of 2021 will be? 2020 brought us new examples of loungewear. Funny that! Which led to us not really knowing how to dress again when lockdown was over. 2020 had so many days of us not really needing to present our dress sense as we have presented it before. Here’s what I’m thinking we are going to see more of. First is a favourite of mine. Whimiscal style. This is a style that adores colour, mixture of patterns and textures with lots of creativity and not too much notice of trend. Lots of people lost their mojo of dressing style over covid, and I’m thinking this year that it’s going to come back with more individuality. Maybe it’s not, but maybe I think if I say it out loud then people will believe it and treat this style as a trend. It’s definitely a trend that polkadotcom is very happy to be a part of. Another fabulous word I discovered the other day was ’the shacket’. What is a ‘shacket’? I hear you say. It’s a combo between a shirt and a jacket. Many times I have recommended to my clients to use their shirts like a jacket. They can be more comfortable then a blazer but still have shape to them. This is a trend that actually has a word for it, and I didn’t even know it! It works brilliantly for summer over dresses and summer tops. File that idea away for you to whip out when you need it. I guess in the month of January for 2021 my biggest trend advice is to at least once a month, take some time to renew even one item of clothing and just re visit in your head the style you love, and to add something that will enhance that style in your wardrobe.

Dear Oxford Community We are working hard to get Phone Consults right and continue to keep these as an available option for you. Here is a list of things that are NOT suitable for phone consults • • • • • • • • •

If your concern is urgent or you find yourself in an emergency situation. If you are a new patient to the practice. If you have already had a telephone consultation and you aren’t feeling any better. If you have had a face-to-face consultation, you still have ongoing concerns but you are unable to see the same provider. If you have a child under 2 who has acute (new and unexplained) symptoms. If you have a child who is experiencing abdominal pain whether new or ongoing without previous diagnosis. If you are experiencing eye problems. If you have been experiencing ongoing symptoms but have not yet been diagnosed. If you have had an injury and are requesting an ACC consultation.

Principals Report with Mike Hart

Sadly, we said farewell to a number of staff members at the end of last year including Miss Kendra Ward (Year 5/6), Mr James Smith (Year 7/8), Mrs Alicia Moore (Year 7/8), Mrs Mary Chisnall (Learning Support Coordinator), Mrs Louise Hayes (Year 3/4), Mrs Kathryn Retallick (Year 9/10), Mrs Sue Nuttall (Technology), Mrs Patsi Sullivan (Mathematics), and Mr Trevor Proffitt (Science and Technology technician). Each of these people have positively contributed to our school and our community. We wish them all the best for their next steps and their future. We have heard many positive comments about our annual Activity Days. With many students in many activities across the region, it is an awesome opportunity for tuakana-teina - our young students working with our older students. This is what uniquely makes us an area school and something we are very proud of. As always we are truly grateful for the parents and families that volunteered to support the activities making them successful opportunities. I would also like to thank the work of Anthea Anderson and Tara Egerton who orchestrate this complex couple of days for all of their work behind the scenes, as well as all of our staff involved

Senior Speech Competition 2020

by Jo West - HOD English

We enjoyed great success with our Junior Speech Competition at the end of last term. The competition involved nine Year 9 and 10 speakers who all stood firm by the courage of their convictions. A real highlight was watching the growth in our learners’ confidence as they voiced their opinions on what truly mattered to them and, in doing so, challenged the beliefs of others. Impressively, the maturity demonstrated through their varied topic choices does indeed highlight that our young people are thinking deeply and critically about the world around them. Ka mau te wehi! Congratulations to all students who presented their speech, and special honours to our first three placements: Shanae Wyllie 1st Hillary Cooper 2nd Micah Stagg 3rd A special thank you to Mr David Halls, Ms Sharyn Varcoe, and Miss Paula Christensen, for giving up your time to judge this competition. Given the quality of our speakers, this was no easy feat!

Our annual Senior Speech Competition, held in Term 4, saw a number of Year 11-13 students demonstrating their passion for words and their flair for public speaking. The diverse range of subject matter allowed for thought-provoking, often entertaining, powerful and inspiring content to be delivered. Congratulations to all students who entered into the spirit of the competition, and especially to those who were placed in the top four positions. Thankyou from The Gateway Programme by Lynne Kerr

2020 has been a very different/strange year for the Gateway Programme here at school due to Covid-19. We have had to work around the different restrictions that were presented to us with being able to get students out into the community to complete the workplace learning component of the programme. With outside provider courses getting cancelled, moving online to complete Gateway assessments with Industry Training Organisations were all challenges at first, but one that the Gateway students all took in their stride. Along with all completing their First Aid Certificates, the students this year have gained Unit Standards in areas like Welding, Nursing, Plumbing, Aviation, Sports Coaching, Engineering and the Automotive Industry. They have also gained valuable experience in these industries and important work ready skills, through doing a work placement. I would like to thank the following local businesses for supporting the Gateway Programme this year by giving or offering a student the opportunity to do a Work Placement. OAS Student Leadership team words by Beka Hunt

When you begin something, there is the common understanding that it will inevitably lead to an end. In Oxford Area School, that can be seen as the school year wraps up once again. The playground swings hang forlorn and hallways stand blissfully empty. Behind the scenes, new beginnings are being designed. For the student leaders of 2021, this is the selection procedure that began as the end of year neared. It involved introducing themselves to the teachers through one sentence. Those involved found this a particularly hard stage, as they were brimming with more to say, but were so restricted. The fellow year 12 students are also invited to rank the applicants- harsh but telling. Their student voice is not the deciding factor, but a necessary one. For 2021 there have been 5 student leaders appointed; 2 head students and 3 deputies. This is one deputy more than 2020. Mike Hart, principal of the school acknowledged that there is never a specific number in mind for the team. Some years it has been 3; some years 6. In 2021, Lauren Morris, Liam Bamford, Cole Stagg, Shaugn Kilgour and Journie Karaitiana will lead Oxford Area School into its next year. These inspiring individuals see this chance to lead as an opportunity to give back to their school. "I wanted to be a role model for students to look up to, being confident and happy"- Journie, the bubbly deputy who is aiming to achieve high and have fun in her last year. You can hear a part of each student in the way they reacted to the news of their new position. Cole, admitting "I was honestly surprised as I did not think that I was going to get a position on the team" and Shaugn saying "I was glad I got in the team with an amazing team of friends and looking forward to working alongside them next year." The reaction of someone who is perhaps too humble and then one who is simply excited to work together. Leading from the front, Lauren and Liam also both share similar goals that will drive the progress within the group. The 5 were chosen because the right people saw how their skill sets interlocked,

and the potential in that cohesiveness. Lauren is ready to bring one-on-one student interaction between the seniors and the juniors, telling me"I want students to know that they can approach the other head students, and me with any ideas or concerns that they may have." Liam is pushing for more involvement. His hair has just grown back from ‘Shave for a cure’, so that's another item on his mind- "I would love to bring back Shave for a Cure after last year, and just try to make the opportunity more inclusive, and just try to get as much support from the community as possible." It's exciting to imagine what they can accomplish together. As 2021 rolls around, we have to keep our eyes on Oxford Area School and those that lead it.

Explore the Netherlands!

New Beginnings with Hank Van Keulen

On Sunday 29 November, a large number of people enjoyed the ‘Explore the Netherlands!’ event brought to Woodend School by the Waimakariri Migrants and Newcomers Group. The purpose of this event was to raise cultural awareness by sharing the Dutch culture to help people gain a better understanding of what it is like to be a migrant and the value that different cultures bring to our communities.

Happy New Year! 2020 has finally come to an end, and what a year it’s been. Highlighted, or for some lowlighted, by the pandemic Covid 19. But, the reality is we coped very well. We can all pat ourselves on the back for the effort we all made to enter into the spirit of eliminating the virus from our shores. And to be fair the lockdown, better known as a “staycation”, wasn’t too much of a hardship. What better opportunity to spend quality time with our partners and children? After all, there wasn’t much else to do. My garden shed has never been so tidy and well organised!! My year has been further complicated by a full hip replacement at the end of June. Thank god for Private Medical Cover, otherwise I’d still be waiting… in pain!! The cost was $25,000, a lot of money that I certainly didn’t have sitting around doing nothing. I’ve had medical insurance for years and never had a claim, that is until now. I’ve paid premiums for a long time, and I’m Dutch, I don’t like paying for anything I don’t have to! However, I look at this as having my hip replacement on layby… When I needed my insurance it was there for me. Another Christmas is now done and dusted. Hopefully, you’ve all had some quality time with family during the Christmas days, as well as a relaxing few days off over the new year period. I know we did. I love Christmas Day with young grandchildren, close family, and elderly parents.

The Honorary Consul of the Netherlands, Mr Gerald van Looy, Dame Aroha Reriti-Crofts and Ingrid Rammers welcomed the visitors. Mayor Dan Gordon announced the prize winners of the ‘the Netherlands Quiz’ and the fundraising raffle for Woodend School. ‘Sinterklaas’ the patron of children, came to visit and with the support of Hanna Mason, a group of students surprised him by reading out beautiful poems they had written especially for him. A Dutch food market was set up, as well as a display of artwork made by the Te Ngahere pupils from Woodend School inspired by their study of the Netherlands. People enjoyed the live Dutch music, played traditional Dutch games and rode bikes. It was a fantastic day! We look forward to seeing you at our next event. We will keep you updated!

However not everyone had quite the same experience as us. Spare a thought for those who have in the past, and indeed did this year, lost loved ones over this special time of year. Jill and I personally had three such sad occasions last Christmas. To be fair, all of them where older and all of them had been unwell for some time. We ourselves experienced the passing of Jill’s mum shortly after Christmas two years ago after a long battle with cancer. However, we’re now into a new year, 2021. New beginnings. Life not necessarily quite as we know it, but, for us fortunate enough to live in “God’s-own”, it’s pretty close. A couple of things I’d like to add here. Firstly, my dear Mum used to say, “God put eyes in the front of your head to look forwards, not backwards.” How true is that! Secondly, Benjamin Franklin once said “out of adversity comes opportunity”. We just need to find it! Finally, it’s also a time of relaxation where many of us take some time off. We can’t go overseas, well we can but with great difficulty, so remember your staycation earlier this year. Enjoy your own back yard. Do some of the things locally you’ve never done. We have a wonderful city, region, in fact, whole country well worth taking the time to explore. Jill and I are back in the office for a couple of weeks before we go away on our break, heading to the Coromandel at the end of January. In the meantime, if you do have an insurance issue, or you have time to consider your insurances over the next few weeks while time is more readily available and you would some advice, give us a call. If you do need to make a claim, whether you’re a client or not and need some help, then give us a call. After all it’s what we do!! Jill and I, and all of us here at PPNZL wish each and every one of you all the very best for the New Year. Let’s hope it’s a better and more prosperous one than the year just gone… Thank you, cheers Hank.

In Touch with Matt Doocey MP for Waimakariri

January 2021 This time of year reminds me how lucky we are to be living in Waimakariri. Despite the challenges of 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic, we have a lot to be grateful for. I’m proud of our businesses that have kept locals in jobs as we battled the impacts of the pandemic, of our community for getting behind our businesses and I’m proud of our community organisations that are helping our communities recover. Through standing together, we can look forward to 2021 with optimism and confidence. Thank you to the Oxford Community Trust for organising the fantastic Christmas Wonderland last month for our community. My children and I loved walking through the displays and meeting Santa, and catching up with residents to exchange Christmas greetings. The Oxford Santa Parade also attracted great support from our community and I enjoyed walking the route for what was my seventh Oxford Santa Parade. It’s great to see the event go from strength to strength. Last week, my family and I enjoyed a visit to Ashley Gorge. As a parent of a young family, I’ve always enjoyed a summer vacation and, as we continue our fight against Covid-19, my family and I again had fun celebrating some of the exceptional recreation spaces right on our doorstep. We always enjoy a picnic and swim at Ashley Gorge and this year for the first time we took the opportunity to try out the walking track – thank you to Oxford’s community spirit in developing a great track that can be done by families.

Exciting lead role position for Oxford Area School Principal Mike Hart of Oxford Area School has certainly been recognised in Oxford as a pillar of the community. You may remember his face from the 'I've got your back' campaign video, that plays before every movie hosted in our very own town hall. This has already earned him street cred on top of his professional achievements. Now, his stardom extends to cover 13 other schools across Canterbury- his professional stardom, not his acting career. There exists in New Zealand such groups called the KÄ hui Ako. These are clusters of schools- primary and secondary- which collaborate to improve the quality of education, KÄ hui Ako meaning ‘community of learning’. Perhaps a mouthful, but still another aspect of the

work that goes on behind the scenes. Mike has recently been appointed the Lead Principal of our communities KÄ hui Ako. This means that on top of the smooth running of Oxford Area School, Mike will spend 2 days a week collaborating with, and organising the 13 principals he now directs. Pre covid, the leading principal would have travelled out to each school. For Oxford, that would be quite a journey to places as far as Akaroa and Hanmer. However, Covid 19 worked well to accommodate the introduction of Zoom to our society. Now Mike can meet his colleagues face-to-face without the travelling time on the winding coastal roads. In these meetings, the learning styles are compared and discussed, with new ideas brought to the table and examined.

words by Beka Hunt

Now Mike is at the head of said table. Kāhui Ako is a relatively new initiative, created just 3 years ago, but Mike tells me it is steadily gaining momentum. Migrating to a higher tech use has always been on the agenda, and Covid 19 merely assisted in the push. Even his new position was confirmed via phone. Granted, it was a strange feeling. Lead principal is not a new job to Mike. It is an extension to his current workload. To attain the role he was scrutinised by a National Moderator and a panel containing a selection of fellow principals.

COUNCIL UPDATE with Councillor Wendy Doody

January 2021 Happy New Year to you all and hopefully your 2021 will not be so disrupted like 2020. It was a tough time for all as we coped with Covid-19 and the aftermath of disruptions to every day life. From the Council it was a time of working at home for staff and Councillors and helping to keep the community stay connected and those in need being provided for and for that a grateful thanks to the Community team for their effort in helping in the community in times of need. The lock down certainly put pressure on us as Councillors as we had to grapple with the backload of work that needed to be done by the end of 2020. “Long Term Plan” taking a serious look at how we can keep the rates down but still maintain work for employment and continuation of work for growth related needs. Making sure we keep roading maintenance and urgent work for completion, but we did have to cut back on some work for outer years when times are more stable for out ratepayers. Our “District Plan” will be out for consultation early in the New Year, this has been massive work load for both Staff and Councillors alike to make sure our District is moving forward in the right direction for the next 10 years and as a community your voice is important for us to make the Plan workable and operative in two years time. Council has appointed a new CE to replace Jim Palmer who has decided to retire from his role in February what a legacy this gentleman has given to the communities of Waimakariri especially during the years after the 2010/2011 earthquakes and beyond. His wisdom will be greatly missed by the Waimakariri community and all of the Local Body Councils of New Zealand. On a personal note I would like to acknowledge two members of the Oxford Community that have passed away recently both have lived and worked in Oxford for their entire life. Robin (Jock) Frahm QSM, JP passed away on November 29 2020 Received his QSM for services to sport, Robin gave his time and energy to Cricket and Rugby within the Oxford Community and also to North Canterbury and latter for the Golden Oldies Cricket fraternity and Golden Oldies Rugby fraternity. Robin was a Justice of the Peace for 40 years his service to the Oxford Community and beyond was much appreciated. Robin was part of the Justice of the Peace Team serving at the JP Service Desk in Oxford. His 40 years service certificate was presented to his family. John (Sam) Doody passed away 15 December 2020 Gave his time and energy to both Rugby and Cricket within the Oxford and North Canterbury communities and latter as a Rugby Referee at Country level officiating in senior matches, Colts and age grades before retiring from active service to taking up coaching and helping up and coming referees in the country. He passed the NZ Rugby Law exam with Honours. Sam also won the “Jack Mayberry’s 64 hundred dollar show”, his chosen subject was “1959 Lions Tour of New Zealand” he was asked to name the teams in 3 out of 4 tests which he answered easily and could have answered to all 4 tests. This was a big thing to do for this quiet and private young man. On a final note I would like to mention the Oxford Collie Club’s Sheep Dog Trials celebrating 100 years on January 30 – 31 where a number of the New Zealand affiliated club members will participate in the weekend activities of dog trials. Congratulations on the clubs achievement in reaching this milestone I would also like to mention the ladies behind this event who will be doing the cooking for the weekend as has been done over the past 100 years. Regards Wendy

EMERGENCY SERVICES Police report with Oxford Constable

Mitch Alatalo

Fire Emergency report with Oxford Chief Fire Officer

Trevor Ealam

January 2021

In November the Brigade received eight calls.

Well, it is safe to say that it has been quite a year to remember, for some of the right reasons and some of the not so good reasons. Let’s set our eyes forward and look forward to what the new year is going to bring us. I hope you have all had a great Christmas and have safely negotiated your way through the new year’s festivities. If you are planning on going away for a break make sure you let your neighbours know. That way they can keep an eye on your place and let us know if there is someone there who should not be. There is always an increase in burglaries with all the nice new shiny toys in the house. Also, can we please keep an eye out on out mail boxes. There has been an increase in mail theft over the past few months leading up to Christmas, but I am sure it will continue. If you see anything suspicious let us know. Try and obtain a registration and a description if possible. It all helps. If you are travelling, enjoy yourself and stay safe, that includes travelling to and from your final destination. Watch your speed. We are catching far too many people speeding, not by 10-11 km/hr but a lot more. It’s not a race. Finally, I am still getting a lot of complaints from contractors about drivers passing where there is no room to pass. The hay season is far from over so please be careful. It is a two way street out there, so if you are driving a slow vehicle and you can see that the traffic is backing up, pull over and let them pass. That’s enough from me, have a great year and see you out there. Thanks again for reading. Be safe. Feel safe.

Three were to vegetation fires, one to an out of control rubbish fire with no one in attendance, one to a controlled rubbish burn with the owner in attendance where no action was required by the brigade and one to a suspicious scrub fire on the banks of the Waimakariri River where a motorcycle was found burnt out in the scrub. There were two calls to medical events, two calls to private smoke alarm activations which were false alarms and one motor vehicle accident where the occupant managed to get out of the vehicle on their own. This brings our total calls for the year to eighty four. This month’s message is; Vegetation is starting to get very dry and will ignite very easily. Please if you are going to mow roadsides etc, try to mow in the mornings when there is a dew. Fire restrictions will be on which means burning by permit only. For fire permits go to, ( www.firepermit.nz ). Take Care. The brigade members and families would like to wish everyone a happy and safe festive season.
