We are heading into our 4th year of publishing the Observer. It has changed considerably in that time, and we are thankful for the support of all our readers and advertisers. Some of these advertisers have been working with us for the whole time, and we are so grateful to everyone who chooses to advertise with us. People have told us that the Observer sits on their coffee table, and that they go back to it all month. This means that our advertisers information is seen over and over. Local papers/magazines are still a great option for advertisers, and your advertising budget goes back into the local economy, rather than to a global digital entity. It's a win/win for sure. Speaking of our local economy, these are challenging times for everyone. If you are in a position to, please support local. If you can't make it in to a business, buy online, or even purchase a voucher to a hospitality, hairdressing, or other business to enjoy when things are more settled out there. By doing this you are helping people in our community, and that has a big impact. We look forward to the years to come, highlighting local people, businesses and groups.

A word from Hank

Keeping Healthy with

Tracie Mill er Are you ready for winter? Happy New Year everyone! Is it too late for that, I’m not sure. Anyway, yes, I’m back. After a break for a few months I’ve decided to start writing again. To be fair I’ve had a number of people ask when I was starting again so, to all those supporters out there, here we go… It seems that after my time away not much has changed. A few things, we don’t have “alert levels” anymore. Instead we have a “traffic light system” and here I thought the only traffic light other than the road traffic control was a drink Jill and I bought for our grandchildren before we gave them back to their parents, so they’d have plenty of energy after a visit… Wrong, we’ve got a new one. However, the new Red setting doesn’t seem to be an awful lot different then the orange we’d become used to. For most of us it’s really business as usual with some stricter measures around numbers at gatherings and wearing of masks. Not too arduous at all I’d suggest. There does seem to be, however, an awful lot of negativity around. So much so that Jill and I have decided this year to watch far less, if any, news on T.V. We don’t watch the 6 pm news and no longer watch the morning breakfast shows. We read our phones. Once upon a time that would have been the Press but now it’s Stuff. We’ve decided to choose what we want to influence our lives. Not what gets thrown down our throats. We’re determined to allow more positivity into our lives as opposed to the doom and gloom we currently see through the media. For those of you who regularly read my columns, you’ll recall in one of my later columns I encouraged all to “shop local”. To support local business as much as possible. That stance hasn’t changed. In fact in the current climate I believe that to be even more important. With the highly contagious Omicron variant, many small businesses face real uncertainty should they or any of their staff become infected. Many could face closure due to the isolation requirements. It therefore behoves us to support them in these times of uncertainty. Shop local!! To this end we here at PPNZL have formed a close working relationship with two other financial service providers. A Mortgage and Lending Adviser as well as a Commercial and “Fire & General” broker. Let me introduce you… Dennis Quayle is a locally based Mortgage Broker. He operates under the brand Mighty Mortgages and provides a lending advice service ranging from personal home mortgages through to business lending. Although Dennis operates independently, he looks after all our clients’ lending needs. I’m not going to say a lot more. I’ll end up stealing his thunder. You’ll hear from him over the coming issues. Many of our existing small business clients will already know Ross Campbell as looking after their commercial insurance needs. Ross is also based locally here in Rangiora and specialises in commercial, house, contents, motor vehicles and anything else you might need insuring. He operates under Ross Campbell Insurance Brokers. Again, you’ll hear more from Ross over the coming issues. In forming our marketing alliance for the year, Dennis, Ross, and I have decided to share this column month about. That means you’ll hear from each of us in turn. It makes life a little easier for me, I only do it once every three months. But trust me, their columns will be just as interesting if not better than mine. Stay safe everyone. You’ll hear from me again in three months. Cheers Hank. CONTACT HANK ON 021 357 062 OR EMAIL HANK@PPNZL.CO.NZ

With autumn upon us it means winter is fast approaching - shorter days, cold weather and unfortunately, the cold and flu season. A healthy immune system is the best defence against cough, cold and flu. So get yourself and your family prepared before the cold weather hits. Have your flu immunisation. Flu symptoms are severe and are not to be confused with cold symptoms – with the flu you often don’t have the energy to get out of bed. This may be fully funded at your doctors so give them a call. If you feel your immune system needs more of a ‘boost’ we are here to help with products formulated to support the body’s immune response. Buccaline tablets can also be used to boost your body’s natural immunity for up to three month’s and provide some protection against the bacterial complications of the flu or a cold. Buccaline is NOT a substitute for the flu vaccine but may be used as well as a flu vaccination. Staying active, eating a balanced diet and ensuring your home is warm and dry and can all help keep you and your family well this winter. Let’s all stay happy and healthy this winter!

Re.clotheme open for business by Emily Chapman

Oxford has another shopping option with re.clotheme, a pre-loved clothing store now open in German Road. Owner Michelle Anderton is no stranger to the business, having previously owned a second hand children’s clothes shop. She says “I have been an avid pre-loved shopper most of my life. I love the philosophy behind it; the sustainability and the thrill of finding an individual garment to re-love and make into my own fashion style, giving that item a second chance at life and knowing I’ve saved it from heading to the landfill! After spending time looking after a family member, she was ready to do something else, and she wanted something that would bring both her, and other people, joy. Michelle understands that people like to dress well, but says “labels are so expensive now - most people have items in their wardrobe that have lots of life left in them (some pieces haven’t even been worn) and deserve to be reloved again “. She can help with quality items, at an affordable price. Re.clotheme sells on consignment, with a 50/50 split on successful sales. They will keep items for a maximum of 7 weeks, then reduce in price, to ensure there is always fresh stock rotating through. Owners can then take their items back, or they will be donated to other charities, including the Budget Boutique in Oxford. If you have quality clothing you would like to sell, contact Michelle and she can have a chat about what seasonal pieces she is accepting currently. Sizes range from 8 - 16 with + sizes also available. Along with clothing, Michelle has a curated range of jewellery, bags, hats and shoes. Eftpos, credit cards are accepted, and a website is in the works to give maximum exposure for people’s garments. Re.clotheme is at 566 German Road. Watch out for the sign and a blue and yellow letter box. Head up through the deer farm and you will find a beautiful pink shop full of quality clothing and accessories. Opening hours are Thursday 10-4.30, Friday 10-4.30, Saturday 10-3.30, or by appointment. Michelle is happy for people to get a group of friends together and make a time with her to come and do some shopping. Check out their facebook page at www.facebook.com/re.clotheme.

New at the Oxford Museum. by Emily Chapman

The Oxford and surrounding districts community is extremely fortunate to have the excellent resource of the Oxford Museum. It is run by a committee and a group of approximately 40 passionate volunteers. They have created a ‘New to the Museum’ section to showcase new items as they come in. Featured currently is a selection of items from the Winter Family from Coopers Creek. Volunteer Allan Thompson says “we don’t often get such a range of things from one place”. Included in this donation is a Magic Lantern, which is an old projector with slides, that runs on kerosene, and is in beautiful condition. An exciting new item is a restored hansom cab (featured on the cover) which is on loan from Oxford locals Allan Rhodes and Lisa Bullock. The cab was used by Allan’s grandfather Alfred Rhodes as a taxi in Christchurch in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It is thought that it was the second to last hansom cab in operation in Christchurch. If you have any items you would like to donate to the Museum, or are interested in becoming a Volunteer, please contact Allan Thompson, 312 1247. The committee try and keep all items locally sourced. The volunteers are also able to help with family research. This is one of Committee member Voila Brown’s areas of interest and expertise. The museum has a large number of photos, family histories and old school records dating back to the 1800s. These school records can be very helpful in finding out addresses, siblings' names, parents' occupation and other helpful information. The Museum is open Wednesday, Friday, Saturday 1-3.30 in summer and Sunday 11-4 all year.

Accessories are the ! by Kerri Booth

“I’ve always thought of accessories as the exclamation point of a women’s outfit.” - Micheal Kors What is accessorising? I have always thought of accessories as the icing on the cake. They are pieces that are chosen to complement the rest of an outfit; the finishing touches. They are one of the best ways to showcase what you love and your personality. A whole item of clothing in a particular colour can leave us feeling intimidated but a scarf, shoes, bracelet, earrings in that colour can seem less daunting and more fun. Take a classic outfit of jeans and a tee. I could show a line up of people in this outfit, but it’s just jeans and a tee until you start to play with accessories. You could re invent your whole look by dusting off that jewellery drawer and bringing items out to see the light of the day. There is a common misconception that changing your look means having to change every single aspect of your wardrobe. It’s simply not true! Viewing your jeans and a tee with a cap, street shoe and fun belt, is completely different than jeans and a tee, with statement earrings, clutch and heels plus a blazer. When choosing accessories my advice is to go with what you love. Be a little magpie and anything you spot that makes you smile or reflects who you are, is a sure sign that it could be meant for you. It also doesn’t always have to be expensive. Costume jewellery is amazing and allows you to try something different without paying a big investment. Taking these pieces and layering them up, or keeping them simple is completely up to you. I always keep the rule of perspective and balance in my head, but sometimes personality can completely override that. If you are a ‘more is more’ type of person then embrace it. If you are a ‘less is more’ then roll with that. Keep in mind what you want to showcase. Where do you want your exclamation point to be? I am a constant overuser of an exclamation mark, and often am an all or nothing accessory wearer. My main advice is don’t leave jewellery, shoes, hats, belts dusty in the corner of the wardrobe. Pull them out and ice the cake.

3 books sure to improve your wellbeing because reading fiction does that. by Amy Riach

There’s nothing wrong with a little escapism even at the best of times, and as New Zealand contends with the unknowns of Covid and Alert Level Red, there’s a lot to be said for getting lost in a good book. And as it turns out, if good fiction is your go-to, there’s no need to feel guilty about ignoring those emails just a few hours longer. They’ll keep until Monday, right? In fact, according to kiwi mental health organisation All the Bright Places, reading fiction is one great way to improve your wellbeing. Oxford’s own Health teacher Emma Don has a few books to recommend herself, and it’s nice knowing that you don’t have to delve into the world of self-help novels to work on your wellbeing. Fiction alone is said to foster empathy and reduce stress, and it can help kiwis in dealing with a fast changing world. So to quote Dr Suess, ‘escape all that waiting and staying’ and ‘find the bright places where Boom Bands are playing’.

This Tender Land - William Kent Kruger A book lent to me by Ms Don herself, 'This Tender Land' is one that is sure to remain a favourite. In the summer of 1932, in the depths of colonial Minnesota, Odie O’Banion sits on the River Gilead in a canoe, and he is not alone. Orphaned and living at the Lincoln Indian Training School, he and his brother Albert are subjected to the cruelty of America’s bygone re-education camps. Camps designed to separate Indigenous children from their families. Children, like their best friend Mose, who joins the brothers on their canoe after a dark night and an accidental crime, forces escape upon the three boys. With them goes Emmy, a broken hearted girl of 6 whom they cannot leave behind. And headed towards the mighty Mississippi, these 4 orphaned vagabonds search for a place to call home. As they journey into the unknown, they cross paths with travelling faith healers and displaced families, struggling farmers and lost souls who have nothing in common, but are all equally adrift. Written like a modern classic, 'This Tender Land' is one of those books that you will loan from the library, and then turn around and buy a copy for yourself, just because you need to keep it on the bookshelf.

The Prince of the Skies - Antonio Iturbe Historical fiction at its most beautiful, 'The Prince of the Skies' is entirely captivating. It is a book that tells the story of famed author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and his friends; pilots changing the face of aviation in the shadow of war. But flying is a dangerous dream, and Antoine is set at odds with the woman he loves. Noelle is unsuccessful in every effort to keep both his feet firmly on the ground. Together with his friends Jean and Henri, he begins to pioneer new mail routes across the globe; the three men blazing trails in the sky, while back on solid ground they deal with the challenges of the domestic in a world torn apart by war and political factions. And in the midst of his adventures in the unknown, Antione begins to weave a children’s story that will come to touch the hearts of millions around the world. A story called 'The Little Prince'.

Geiger - Gustaf Skördeman 50 years on from the Cold War, Sweden has all but recovered. The espionage and duplicity of America’s almost-war no longer occupying the public morale. But brewing under the surface is a plot half a century in the making, and all it takes is one phone call to bring the Cold War back into the present day. One call to a landline in the suburbs, and a single word near-whispered into the receiver. Geiger. Agneta Broman is waving goodbye to her grandchildren when the phone rings, but she has been waiting for this call for a very long time. And as her daughters and their children disappear down the driveway, she retrieves her weapon from it’s long held hiding place, and walks up silently behind her husband. Then she pulls the trigger, and the astonishing crime hits headlines. This extraordinary murder is not Sarah Nowak’s case. But once she had called the victims her friends, and so she joins the investigation regardless. Only this is no run of the mill killing. And an intricate plot, held together for 50 years, cannot be undone in a day.

At the time of writing COVID omicron cases are currently on the rise in Canterbury. We would like to reassure our patients that it is business as usual at the Oxford Community Health Centre and we will continue to deliver your care in the best way possible during these challenging times. You will notice that our preference will be for telephone consultations but face to face consultations will still be carried out where the clinician deems it necessary and you may get called to triage your appointment booking. It is now a requirement for all patients to wear a surgical mask if they are attending the medical centre in person. For patients who have a mask exemption their consultations will be conducted outside of the medical centre with the clinician in full PPE. We would like you to ensure you have a plan for how you are going to manage yourself and your household if you are required to go into self-isolation. If you live alone or are feeling vulnerable we would urge you to contact us and ask to speak to a Practice Nurse about setting up an Acute Care Plan for yourself. As well as a plan for yourself this plan can include such things as who will look after your animals if you are unable to manage them yourself. Council update

Mayoral update

with

Wendy Doody. Oxford Rural Drainage: meeting was held in February and the committee have an issue with land clearance and subsequent erosion issues affecting Mounsey’s Creek catchment. Council Staff and Councillors have viewed the area and are fully aware of the issues with Council’s infrastructure and ECAN with the copious layers of shingle building up in the river bed from storm damages over the past months. If anyone can help answering the question of illegal earthwork done in widening access to New Road where soil and gravel have been dumped into the river’s floodplain and falling into the actual waterway, the committee have commented they would appreciate information of the possibility of serious breach of any consented work. 3 Waters Reform: Growing in momentum with 29 Councils around New Zealand having signed up to supporting Councils opposing the takeover of all assets proposed. The Working Group have put forward documents that support an alternative approach to the Government Reform, worked on by a Specialised Company employed by Council’s Working Party to give them sound advice on moving this beast forward. Alternative Options for Water Reform website https:/www.communities4localdemocracy.co.nz/ideas. Annual Plan: unfortunately due to the latest Covid breakout we need to look after Personal Safety of our community so no events will be held this year to discuss with the public at large except for Pegasus where they hold their Monthly Cuppa catchup. If you have any questions or issues please get in touch with Council Staff or myself. Roading Briefing: was held at yesterdays Utilities and Roading Meeting giving us an update of the damage to the Rural roads, culverts and bridges caused by the latest rainfall events. Please keep up with the “Snap Send Solve” with your concerns to roading and infrastructure damage. The staff are aware of a number of unsealed roads needing repairs and will get the work done asap. Unfortunately they have a number of major works that need immediate attention. Oxford-Ohoka Community Board: have given to West Eyreton Oaks Reserve North Eyre funding for a community project to do planting for beautification to this parcel of land for the community to enjoy, hopefully this will take place this Autumn. Thank you Mark Brown Community Board Member for the effort you have put into getting this project off the ground. On a final note: Ian and I have sold our property in Oxford due to personal reasons and will be moving to Rangiora. I will still be your Local Body Councillor for the Oxford- Ohoka Ward for the next few months left in this 3 year term. The only difference is instead of travelling from Oxford to Rangiora I will be travelling from Rangiora to Oxford to support the Oxford Community, we are very sad to leave our lovely home and garden which we have developed over the past 14 years with a beautiful view of Mt Oxford and the community we love and support. Kind Regards, Wendy

Dan Gordon. It has been a mixed start to the year with some happy, and some sad occasions. Firstly, I would like to acknowledge Blackwell’s Department Store’s 150th anniversary. It was a privilege to speak and provide a toast at their recent celebration. Blackwell’s history is tightly woven into the story of the development and growth of Kaiapoi, with the store representing the true centrepiece of our river town. From the founder George Henry Blackwell to today’s generation of Andrew, Michael and family, they provide an excellent example of the success that local businesses can have when they focus on serving the community, and providing outstanding customer service to successive generations of Waimakariri residents. Last year, to mark their 150 years, we were delighted to accept the gift of the Karo sculpture by renowned artist Andrew Drummond, which now sits prominently near the Kaiapoi River for all to enjoy. A very generous gift. It was also a privilege to attend the Oxford Volunteer Fire Brigade awards and to acknowledge Ron Ealam’s 25 year service and award of a gold star. As a community we couldn’t function without the people who generously volunteer their time. Ron is an excellent example of that, having also given 48 years of service to Oxford Search and Rescue. We thank Ron for his outstanding commitment to the community. The fire at Sutton Tools was devastating news. My thoughts and those of the Council go out to the 100 employees. Sutton Tools has been part of Kaiapoi for 60 years and employed many generations of local families. Immediately following the fire I phoned the owner in Australia and expressed that they are a much-valued business in Kaiapoi and Waimakariri. Recently I sent a letter, which I and all the Councillors signed, reiterating our ongoing support and that we are here to help. Sutton Tools remaining in Kaiapoi and Waimakariri is a priority for our Council. We are committed to supporting them in the coming weeks, months and years ahead. Intense weather events are occurring more often. Council staff, contractors, Civil Defence and volunteers are always on standby prepared to support our community. The weekend of 13-14 February was a case in point and I want to acknowledge and thank all those who support us to make sure we are protected. When there are events such as these, keep a look out on Council’s Facebook and website for updates. If there is ever an issue of concern, do call us on 0800 965 468 – this number is available 24 hours. Dan Gordon

APRICOT ALMOND POLENTA CAKE Gluten free & Dairy free

300g Fresh Apricots (150g if using dried) 250mi water 3 Cardamon pods (cracked) 200g Ground Almonds 50g Polenta 1 tea sp baking powder 150g Caster Sugar 6 Eggs 2 teasp Lemon Juice 1 Tab Rose Water

TO DECORATE

1 Tablesp Apricot Jam 1teasp Rose Water Toasted slithered Almonds or chopped Pistachio nuts Dried Rose Petals

METHOD

You will need a 20cm/8 inch round spring form cake tin. Pre heat oven to 180 degrees C Cut the Apricots in half, remove stone. Put 8 halves aside for the topping. Put into a heavy based saucepan, the remaining Apricots pour on the water, add the cracked Cardamon pods. Bring to a boil and let it bubble away for about 8 mins, most of the water will evaporate but don’t let it boil dry. Remove from heat and leave to cool. Line the spring form cake tin with baking paper and spray with oil. In a food processor (bowl if you don’t have one) add the cooked Apricots but remove the cardamon pods, I like to squeeze out the seeds as they add extra flavour. Add the Ground Almond, polenta, baking powder, caster sugar and eggs. Give it a good blitz to combine. Scrape down the sides of the food processor then add the lemon juice and rose water. Blitz again. Pour cake mix into the cake tin. Arrange the uncooked apricots on the top. Bake for 40 mins, Check cake afer 30 mins to make sure its not browning too much. If so cover lightly with foil. Once cake is cooked leave to cool before taking out of tin. Once cool enough to handle, remove from tin and place on a cooling rack. To glaze, mix the jam with the rose water in a small sauce and heat until it bubbles. Remove from heat and with a brush paint the top of the cake to give it amazing shine. Sprinkle with the toasted nuts and dried rose petals. Enjoy with Greek Yogurt, Ice cream or cream, for either coffee time or dessert.

We have many exciting things to look forward to this year, not to mention the progress of our rebuild project and our 150th Jubilee (to be held over Labour Weekend). While there are some small changes to the start of the year, many things are just the same. Our teachers and support staff have spent considerable time planning and preparing, to set us up for success for the remainder of the year. We are very pleased to announce Mr Aaron Campbell to the role of Presiding Member (Board Chairperson) of the School Board for 2022. We are very excited to have someone of Aaron's caliber in this role. We must also note the amazing service and dedication Mr Matt Riley has made in his time as Board Chair over the past nine years. In Matt's time, he has led our school through many significant events, staffing appointments and property upgrades. We can attribute a great deal of progress of our school over the last nine years, to Matt and his tireless dedication. Thank you Matt. Towards the end of last year and into the Christmas break of this year we have been working on a landscaping project out the front of Aotahi. And it is finished! This space provides all-year-round use with the artificial grass - not to mention less mowing for our caretaker! The expansive decking provides for a nice place to gather during breaks but also as a "stage" for performances, enough to fit a whole class on and the students enjoy "parkour" as they hop over the View Hill boulders.

52 Bay Road Oxford

Firstly I would like to take this opportunity to thank Matt Riley for his dedicated service and leadership over the many years that he has represented parents on the Oxford Area School Board of Trustees, and held the position of Presiding Member (previously Board Chairperson). His work ethic, commitment to the school and desire to see our Tamariki rise to be the best they can be, and to get the most out of their schooling years, has been beyond reproach. Without question this has been a massive commitment of his time and that of his family. I look forward to working with Matt while I learn from him the finer points of this role. I am humbled and honoured to have been nominated and voted by my fellow Board members into the role of Presiding Member for the 2022 year ahead. I have been on the Board of Trustees for almost three years now, and look forward to the challenges ahead that come with holding this position. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to thank the senior leadership team and all the staff at school for all the hard work to get the school up and running as smoothly as it has. At the end of 2021 I think we were all hoping that 2022 would be a step closer to normality. However the move into the red traffic light setting announced in January meant our staff and leaders had to adapt a new approach, and spend a significant amount of time preparing for school commencement with the new COVID safety standards in mind. I hope everyone had a well deserved break over the summer holiday period, and those in the school community are keen to get stuck into what may be in store for us during 2022. Ngā mihi Aaron Campbell

Last year, Hazel graduated from the UC with a Bachelor of Science in Data Science: “I was part of the University of Canterbury’s Emerging Leaders Development Programme, which developed my leadership skills and boosted my confidence. Attending the University of Canterbury was a big change for me from the small rural town I grew up in, and doing this program with so many talented individuals from different backgrounds helped influence me to think about the bigger picture – the idea of creating something that will have the potential to impact lives across the world". Women in ICT Awards (WIICTA) has celebrated gender diversity and recognised female excellence across the New Zealand tech channel since first launching in 2016, acknowledging the achievements of a talented group of female front runners who have become influential figures across the local industry.

Countdown to Oxford Schools Jubilee Meet Melva Monk, Oxford’s Oldest Pupil by Amy Riach

Oxford School Std 5 1935 Back Row: Myrtle James, May Reeves, Marcia Boocock, Ngaire Quinn, Shirley Reid, Thelma Pawsey, Joan Oldman. Second Row: Marjory Meyer, Lorna Dalley, Winnie Waterman, Jean Squire, Casey Reid, Melva Frahm. Front Row: Keith Boocock, Russell Thompson, Doug Handley, Clare Stubbs, Lester Reid, Allan Thompson, Ross Higginson. With two months down and eight months to go, the upcoming Oxford Schools Jubilee is providing an opportunity for all of us to look towards the future of Oxford Area School, but it’s also inspiring a deeper look into 150 years of history. Different in so many ways, and yet so much the same in others, OAS has changed hugely; but it has always been a central part of the Oxford community and all the people in it. At 98 years old, Melva Monk is Oxford’s oldest former pupil, old enough to remember the days when Oxford Area School was not an area school at all, but rather the Oxford District High. It was almost a century ago when she first started school at Oxford Primary in the 1920's, and a few years after that when she began high school here. Now she tells me a wee bit about her life, both during and after school in Oxford. Seven decades ago, life at Oxford District High was remarkably similar to student life now at Oxford Area School. The basketball team which we still take such pride in, was not only up and running in Melva’s teenage years, but in fact the players were coached by her. She tells me proudly that she was both coach and captain in her day, and says “I loved playing basketball, and I was a good player!” She goes on to explain that she “even played for North Canterbury”, and it’s clear that the competitive sport was a lasting highlight of her high school career. Of course in order to make it to school and to basketball training, first Melva and her brothers had to bike half a mile from Coopers Creek to catch the bus. As someone who gave up biking years ago, in the pursuit of doing other things like not biking, the journey made in rain, hail, or shine seems beyond dedicated. And Melva seems to delight in my inability to relate, laughing loudly as she adds that they never had a car either, “but we had a horse and gig!” Melva’s grandfather was the man responsible for settling the family in Coopers Creek, and Melva tells me he came to New Zealand from Germany, though he found it tough at first to get re-established here. Eventually though he set his hand to construction, and built “a wee little church out at Coopers Creek”. When Melva turned 18, she moved into the Oxford township, and not long after she and her late husband Jack, built a family home on Park Avenue. She has her twin brothers to thank for that, and she laughs as she explains that Jack and her brothers “were together all the time, they were just never apart and that’s how I met Jack”. She and her husband soon grew their Oxford family, and Melva’s own kids went to school in Oxford. A long standing member of our Oxford community, Melva now resides in the Oxford Hospital, and she tells me “It’s nice to think someone’s interested in the older people. We’ve got this history”. Melva certainly does have a history, her stories now a part of Oxford’s own historical landscape. It was a privilege to be able to chat to her about her life and her days at school, and relay my own modern versions of the same tale. As the jubilee approaches, including alumni in the anniversary, is something I am very much looking forward to, and it will be fascinating to hear about life after Oxford for some of our ex-pupils. If there is anyone in our community who would be interested in working on a committee to help organise the jubilee, please email event coordinator Mary Chinsnall, at jubilee@oxford.school.nz. All details can be found at the Facebook page Oxford Schools 150 Years Jubilee, or contact the school at 033124297 for inquiries. twenty one

Ma Dooc ey MP for Waimakariri

In the last year under Labour we have seen the biggest ever increase in rents across the country, of $50 a week. Here in Waimakariri we have seen an even greater rent hike of $70 a week over the past year. Given the year we’ve had, and the impacts on so many income streams due to Covid-19, the added pressure is making it harder to get ahead for many. Add to the rent increase the cost of fuel at the pump and the weekly grocery bill and it is hardly a surprise to see more and more people struggling to manage the family budget. The latest figures show meat prices alone rose almost 4 per cent between December and January, and up almost 6 per cent from January last year. As local MP I am being made increasingly aware that people across the district are finding life tougher than ever, the latest evidence in the number of people turning up to pick up food from drop-off points. One sector which particularly under the pump with overbearing government regulations is agriculture, with the latest insult from this government being the recentlyannounced ute tax. It is vital that we keep up our support for our farmers who are ultimately the ones who can feed us. That’s why it was important for me to bring National’s agriculture spokesperson, and future New Zealand’s first female Minister for agriculture, Barbara Kuriger, to meet with farming groups in our district. It’s important these groups feel listened to, after all they are the backbone of New Zealand, and Barbara is committed to challenging the overwhelming amount of legislation coming from this government. As a farmer herself, she is acutely aware of the need to listen to the farming community –they are the ones who really know their land and how best to look after it for future generations. Another rural initiative driven my Youth MP and Oxford local, Hillary Cooper, is getting under way and will also help drive the rural sector, in more ways than one. Hillary, who has a strong farming background, is helping improve access to jobs for young rural people through driving courses and mentors. This district has a proud history of producing great leaders and advocates within the rural sector. Long may it continue.

Get involved with St John Oxford. by Beka Hunt

Health is a universal issue, and is the reason that organisations such as St John exist. In 2021 alone, St John Ambulances responded to 606,503 calls across Aotearoa. In Oxford, we are lucky enough to have our own ambulance, which responded to around 400 calls. Yet due to its small size, the Oxford station is only officially operational between the hours of 6pm and 6am. After talking to volunteer Jack Patterson, I learnt just how much the Oxford crew care about their community, as they continually help outside of their usual hours. During the day, if there is a call in this area, the Oxford Volunteers are contacted. If available, they choose to attend the call- as a trip to ED takes around 3 hours. This is no small feat. For Jack, it’s just part of the job, but he wishes that they had enough personnel to cover the day completely. To officially man the station full time, Oxford would need upwards of twenty volunteers- so far, they only have six, with four recruits. Jack was trained by the station 6 years ago, and has been returning every year since. He signed up purely to give back to the community, saying, “I’m continually amazed at how much help I can give to people and I have absolutely no regrets.” He is adamant that there’s no better place to learn. “The Oxford station is a great place to begin a journey in St John. The support system here is so great that you’re never alone- anyone joining can get a wide base of knowledge, very quickly.” There’s many benefits for those that sign up, especially for recent school leavers, with Jack adding “anyone thinking of using this as a vocation can become a paramedic out of school. It costs nothing to become an EMT (emergency medical technician), only your time. Becoming a fully trained paramedic is no different from going to university.” As well as the experienced personnel, new recruits also have the benefit of a special mannequin designed to assist cardiac arrest training, that the Lions Club has recently donated. This contribution is greatly appreciated, and will serve the community for many years to come. As for Jack, after a night of saving lives, he returns to manage his 20 acre property, growing and processing his own wool. He competes in Woodchopping, and assists on farms around Cust a couple times a week. In spite of this busy life, he plans to use his spare time to continue saving lives as a First Responder, and hopes you might choose to as well. To become a Paramedic out of school you need to be over 18, reasonably fit and have a full driving licence. If you are interested in volunteering, you can contact Mel Brooker (027 545 9088), or call the Oxford Station phone on 03 3123516. Please leave your contact details, so we can catch up with you. 1 https://www.stjohn.org.nz/news--info/news-articles/st-john-releases-ambulance-data-for-2021/

Thank you for your time. Until next month. Be safe. Feel safe.

During January the Brigade was called seven times. Three calls were to assist the Cust Brigade, one to a vegetation fire threatening property, two to private smoke alarm activations and both cases nothing was found. In our area we attended one motor vehicle accident with no injuries to the occupant, one to set up a landing zone for a rescue helicopter, one to private smoke alarm activation which was found to be a faulty alarm and one to controlled slash fire which no action was required by the Brigade.

OXFORD CHIEF FIRE OFFICER

Trevor Ealam

This month's message is; Before lighting an outside fire check to see if it is allowed. Let your neighbours know and check that the smoke will not disturb your neighbours or reduce visibility for road or air traffic.

We have had another busy start to the year with 54 jobs attended to by the Oxford team. These jobs range from MVA to helping a fallen patient to their feet. With Covid making itself known please remember to get your booster, get tested if you have symptoms, have a plan for isolation including someone close by who can collect food and goods as required. The Ambulance will still come to you if necessary even if you do have symptoms. It is best to let ambulance communications know you have covid concerns so we can wear the appropriate PPE gear. Strokes are one condition that is time critical. The sooner you can get treatment the more likely of a better outcome. If you have any inkling that a stroke may have occurred please call 111 without delay.

OXFORD ST JOHN STATION MANAGER

M el Brooker

We have several new recruits that have recently joined us which is fantastic, but we are always looking for new people that are wanting to give something back to their community, If you would like to learn more please ring the station on 033123516 leave your name and number and our recruiting officer will be in touch. The ambulance station at Oxford is not manned 24 hours a day. If you require emergency assistance please call 111. Take care out there. Keep safe and stay positive.

OXFORD CONSTABLE

Another month has passed, and it is that time again. Summer is behind us. Yes, it has been a crazy summer with the weather, but I hope you have all enjoyed it. There have been a number of rural and dwelling burglaries this last month, so I would like to reiterate, be aware of your neighbours and the people in your community. If something or someone looks out of place, please let us know, or let your neighbour know. You are the eyes and ears of the community. Look out for each other. Unfortunately, I am still hearing of unreported incidents, vehicle break-ins, and even attempted burglaries. The days are getting shorter, and the mornings are getting darker, and it’s that time of year again to give your vehicle the once over before winter, and not wait for that next Warrant of Fitness. Make sure you have good tread depth, and your wipers are working properly. With the mornings getting foggy, watch out for your following distances and put your lights on. It’s amazing how much difference it makes. I have been getting lots of comments from people in the community about the amount of Police presence in the community. I for one think it’s great. However, the reports coming back are not. There are too many people not wearing their seat belts, and on their mobile phones. Seat belts and distraction are two of our main contributors to serious harm on our road, and it’s a real easy fix.
