New look Womersley’s - Cobra Club on tour Five motivational reads plus much more

MARCH 2021 Hello again – welcome to the March issue of the Observer. This month we have some awesome articles from our team of writers. They all work really hard to bring a variety of community stories, and we really appreciate their work. We had a little reminder in the last few weeks of the ongoing effect Covid-19 is having on the world. The Oxford Community Trust is a great source of support in the community & they realise that some people are still feeling the effects of loss of jobs, or hours, because of Covid. We spoke with Manager Jo Ealam about the ways the Trust can help. Read more on page 14. The Rangiora Promotions event Happyhire’s Eats & Beats is coming up on Saturday 13th March- this is always a fantastic event. Check out the ad for this on page 3 Have a great month!

Woven Maori hopes to spread tikanga words & photos by Candice Breeze

Spreading awareness of sacred traditional Maori processes is something that Tiare Annadale wants everyone to mōhio. Annadale hopes to bring Te Reo and traditional weaving classes to Oxford, which she calls her “safe haven”. “It’s important to learn the tikanga and the process of harvesting the flax and why it’s used. It’s sacred traditional knowledge that I want to bring forward,” says Annadale. Recently she was able to share her knowledge with a group of Muslim youth. She took them to the flax bush and went through the process of saying a karakia, giving thanks to the plant and the earth. She also educated them on why the flax is cut at an angle, and why the three middle flaxes are left alone. “We leave the front three alone as that is seen as the family. If you cut one of those, it will end that generation. It’s great to bring forward that knowledge that we can’t just take what we want. It’s a respectable sacred act,” Annadale says. A new venture that started in November 2020, Woven Maori has been an instant success with Annadale within the first week of starting , getting orders and requests to do workshops and attend events such as Aroha Festiva. She credits Oxford and the friendly community here saying that it allowed her to grow into the person she is now. “This community is beautiful and the people are amazing. You are free to be you here,” Annadale says. Growing up she didn’t know much about her culture.

four

It was “dormant” to her. But one evening six years ago when trying to finish a kete (a bag) out of flax Annadale and her sister, decided to enrol in a short course in weaving at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. “It was the birth place of getting to know my heritage. Te Wānanga bought something alive in me. It made me feel happy and connected with my culture,” says Annadale. She always envisioned herself having her own business whether it was with Te Reo or weaving, but she wanted her business to have a purpose. She began to make Pake, (traditionally a rain coat), and flower bouquets for herself and her friends and family’s weddings. After a few failed attempts she realised that she could do this, and do it with a purpose and clear vision. “These were all significant moments in my journey that led me to have the confidence to do it.” She gathered all the photos she had taken of Ketes, Pakes and flower bouquets, and put them up on Instagram and Facebook. That is when Woven Maori was born. Annadale has seen a great need in, and around Oxford, to teach, and hopes to have a relaxed Te Reo class, where it’s conversational based, with people of all levels coming and conversing in Te Reo.

Supporting the Community An exciting, new barbecue trailer has recently been designed and built, with the Selwyn and Waimakariri communities in mind. Mark Terry previously worked for PGG Wrightson Real Estate, in Blenheim and relocated to PGG Wrightson Real Estate, Darfield in July 2020. Being new to the area, the trailer was a brain wave idea, to help locals in our community and in turn give Mark’s business some profile. He engaged with close friend, Glen McKay an engineer based in Oxford, to design and build the trailer. Shortly after starting the process, Mark entered a business partnership with Karen Hennessy, (who already works in real estate, with PGG Wrightson Darfield) offering a unique male/female team approach to real estate, in the Selwyn/Waimakariri districts. The trailer is available for use to anybody in the Selwyn or Waimakariri district – including clubs, individuals, companies, field days, shows, sports events etc. Bookings must be made via Mark or Karen and a small bond will need to be paid, which will be refunded upon the trailer returning in the same condition as it was hired. All parties who make use of the trailer are able to make a donation; any funds accumulated from donations will then be distributed back into the local community on a regular basis. One day during level 4 lockdown, Tori Rossiter quietly looked up ‘food trucks’ on Google, deciding to finally take the plunge into starting her own business.

With the name decided she began to open her truck part time, on top of her full time job and being a mother. Her first market experience, however, didn’t go so well.

Lockdown gave her the motivation and push she needed, to finally invest in herself, and create her own business; something she had dreamt about for years. “I thought why don’t I just do it? What have I got to lose!” says Rossiter.

“It was awful, and if I had gone off that experience, I would have canned it there and then,” Rossiter says.

When she returned to full time work after lockdown was lifted, and her maternity leave ended, she began to plan her business, digging up recipes she had already created years prior. “I’ve had recipes for five years that I have played around with, adapted and perfected” recalls Rossiter. Having set up kitchens previously, including Under the Oaks and Cruisy Days Diner, made it easier for her, as she already knew the ins and outs of how to start a kitchen, and get all the appropriate licenses needed.

However that all changed when the Lions group in Oxford invited her to come along to the Big Day Out. She began to get recognised by locals, and started to attend other markets and events. With that response she decided to quit her fulltime job as a chef, and go full time in her passion project. “Now I’m getting a lot more interest, and the other night I sold out of everything. I actually had to shut early for the first time!”

When she got her food truck, her mother suggested the name Queenie’s Delights, as Queenie has been her nickname in the family.

Cobra Club on Tour. words by Beka Hunt - photos Bruce Chapman

On Monday 15th of Feb, you may have heard a low roar originating from the Main Street. Incredibly, the roar was not that of a lion but a beast of a Classic car. This car was one of the 24 that stopped at the Black Beech Wine Bar for a parking spot and a lunch of pizza. The pack consisted of Cobra, Fraser and Mustang cars, with an estimated value of $4 million worth of pure power. The Black Beech was a stop among many on their 2 week ‘2021 Southern Run’- a circuit tour of New Zealand beginning in Auckland. On the tour, the convoy covered an average of 500 kilometers per day, rain or shine, with the roofless drivers packing plenty of rain gear. The wine bar was the starting point for many ‘Christchurchers’ who met to begin their 9 day section on the circuit, before driving onto Tekapo. Every two years, Classic car owners across the country are welcome to join this drive and share their expertise. On the road, the motorists would carry out a ‘shed raid’- viewing a member's work in progress and offering their advice. The cars themselves are mostly built from scratch or imported, with a range of engines starting from 450 horsepower. Unsurprisingly, much fuel was needed, as well as stops every two hours for the sake of the driver and their transport- repairs are not quick or easy when dealing with custom designs. A costly lifestyle, but as Club President Graeme Holder said; “what’s the point of having one and keeping it in a shed?” The tour, held by the New Zealand Cobra club, had each restaurant and motel carefully mapped. Roni Nilsen, a key organiser, explained how each stop would be pouring money into local businesses.

She also added that the plan included everyone; “we made sure there’s plenty of shopping for the wives.” They found many establishments willing to host approx 38 hungry motorists, motels and restaurants alike. By the time of writing, this 4,500 kilometre tour will be completed. Designed to pass through all the prime destinations in New Zealand, the drivers had an opportunity to share their love across the country.

Anyone is welcome to join their Facebook group ‘Cobra Club New Zealand’, a relaxed page dedicated to bringing car enthusiasts together. The club would also love to thank The Black Beech for being an excellent, accommodating host. As for Oxford, we can only strain to hear that roar on our Main street once again

In Touch with

Matt Doocey MP for Waimakariri

I’ve made a new year’s resolution that 2021 will see me run my first full marathon. It’s good to have a goal to work for when you’re trying to move towards a healthier lifestyle. It can be difficult for me to fit gym time into a schedule that’s often unpredictable, so having a tangible aim helps. I’m looking forward to the challenge and welcome any runners out there to please share your tips. You’ll be able to follow my progress on Facebook so feel free to jump in and add your expertise. I enjoyed speaking at and attending the recent Field Day in Oxford to look at how we can support our farmers as they work to meet new climate-change targets. Regular forums are great for keeping our farmers connected and for supporting their mental-health needs. As National’s Mental Health Spokesperson, I was able to talk a bit about the need to ensure our farmers don’t feel isolated and the importance of access to early intervention services. Remember, reaching out to someone you know can be an important first step if you are feeling overwhelmed. Our communities are celebrating a return to Alert Level 1 after the recent Covid-19 resurgence. I urgently returned to Wellington to join my fellow MPs to look at how we can support affected businesses when trading is impacted during Covid-19 resurgences. It’s important we limit the economic and social impacts of the pandemic while we do everything to keep our communities safe. Legislation like the Covid Resurgence Support Payment bill adds another layer of reassurance for employees and business owners as we continue to prepare for potential changes in alert levels. As always, I am here to help, so please get in touch if you would like to set up a time to meet with me at my Oxford community clinic. Authorised by Matt Doocey, Level 1, 188 High Street, Rangiora.

5 ways to make your senior Dog or Cat more comfortable At The Feedshack, we have been specialists in world class animal nutrition for over 12 years. In our own furbaby family we have had dogs and cats reach their “ancient” age. A quality diet helps get them there, but this is when we need to change a few things to support their end years. Our responsibilty as care takers is to provide the best quality of life for them and that is where nutrition and appropriate supplements can play a major part.

Step 1. Diet - The Foundation of Good Health You need to feed them anyway, right? By adjusting your food choices for them towards foods that have removed inflammatory ingredients such as rice, potato, wheat and maize, you’ve made a good start. Further again, those that have the most meat provide the most nourishment! Cats are “true carnivores” and that’s where Orijen Cat and Kitten sets the highest standard....with a whopping 85% meat delivered in WholePrey ratios! The list of ingredients is just outstanding! You feed less vs other foods because it is packed with nourishment. When compared to other “science based” foods on the market it’s embarrassing (for the other brands!). Orijen Senior Dog Food delivers some of the highest levels of glucosamine and chondroitin (from natural sources) in a manufactured dog food in the world. Meat content is a massive 85% and there are no inflammatory ingredients for more relief. We found this food was awesome for our first beagle, Bailey as he aged - wow what a difference in him!

Step 2. Supplements to support Health In addition to a great diet, you may get to the point where a bit of quality supplementation is appropriate.....like uncut 100% Pure Green Lipped Mussel Powder (watch for those products with fillers), 100% Hemp Seed Oil and Pet Specific Probiotics. When used correctly, these can seriously enhance the lives of your senior furkids. (Not yoghurt though)

Step 3. Reduce Calorie Intake to avoid weight gain The misconception of pet food is that overweight pets are caused by too much fat in their diet and we should reduce the fat for weight loss (alongside exercise and correct feed rates). In fact our carnivorous fur family require appropriate fat levels for low GI energy and one of the biggest causes of weight gain in our porky furkids, is actually the massive inclusion of inflammatory grains and potato in most pet foods today. Their bodies are unable to digest these starches and proteins - especially at such high levels and they are then more often stored in the body, putting on the bulk (a lot like us really). Orijen and Acana Senior Dog Foods contain high ratios of meat - no grains - low legumes slightly lower fat (but still high enough for energy and a good yummy rating). In our experience, our senior cats perform exceptionally well and are actually less grumpy on the Orijen Cat & Kitten recipe.

Step 4. Maintain a constistant exercise regime Dogs need regular excercise to maintain healthy muscle, joints and weight. Daily walks also provide mental stimulation. Too much can be harmful to the senior dog, though. Long walks and high-impact activities can put pressure on already damaged joints. Many older dogs also don’t have the energy they once had. The key is to remember that the walk is for your dog, not you! If your pet wants to amble at a slow pace, stop to sniff (and rest) every few minutes, then let him. Look for other warning signs that your dog is struggling. Excessive panting, drooling or coughing can all be signs of exhaustion. Never force your dog to try and keep up with you.

Step 5. Choose The Right Bed To Relieve Joint Soreness Your dog’s bed can make the difference between a comfortable sleep and waking up with sore joints. If your dog often seems stiff in the morning, his bed could be the culprit. The best beds for senior dogs are made with thick memory foam. This molds to a dog’s body shape, which prevents pressure points on sore hips and shoulders. Keep in mind that heavier dogs need thicker memory foam. You don’t want the bed to allow the dog to sink through to the floor. You should also look for a bed with solid foam instead of shredded. Shredded foam doesn’t provide the same support.

Why do we choose the products on our shelves and not others? We have worked on a key philosophy ....sometimes you can actually get a better result spending less money but spending it appropriately on the right products. Think of comparing the ingredient listings on your food like this... you buy a luxury car and spend $250,000 on it! You pop the hood and look under it (ie looking at the ingredients on a bag). To your horror there’s a second hand motor inside! Not happy? No surprise! That’s often what we find talking to our customers , that they are spending the big money on their food (think luxury car) and when you actually look at the ingredient listing ......and understanding the terms and how things are listed is key, they haven’t got the food they thought it was! (worst of all, they believed they were feeding the best to their pet) And that’s why for years our foods have clear ingredient listings, are priced according to value and why we do not stock some of the “better” known brands . 12 years of trust, integrity and specialist knowledge is what we offer to our customers. Look forward to seeing you in the store or have a look at our feedmypet.co.nz website .

Five books to kickstart 2021 1. Get Your Sh*t Together

By Sarah Knight

This book is perfect for those of you who are starting to lose sight of those 2021 goals you created for yourself at the beginning of the year. Sarah Knight has a no fuss approach to achieving your goals by putting them into small manageable chunks. When a project or goal seems unattainable, it is because the end result is so big. For example perhaps your goal for 2021 is to get a six pack, and currently you don’t have any packs. The end result seems too far away that you put it off, but if you broke this down into small manageable chunks you realise that in order to attain this, you just need to commit to a 30 minute gym session three times a week. Or perhaps your goal is to write a novel, but the daunting word count of 40,000 words + seems so daunting that you can’t even write a sentence to begin it. If you set a goal to write a 40,000 word novel, in 12 months, that’s only 833 words a week, or only 119 words a day. When we break down these large goals into small manageable ones, they suddenly seem more attainable. While Knight’s abrupt and no bullsh*t style writing may not be for everyone, it certainly gave me the much needed motivation to get on with my 2021 goals. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to reach their goals, help finish a project, or someone starting up a small business.

2. Big Magic

By Elizabeth Gilbert

You may be thinking, Elizabeth Gilbert, I’ve heard that name before. Well most of you have. She is the infamous writer of ‘Eat, Pray, Love’, the novel that took over the best selling charts and that also hit the big screen. Gilbert shares her insights into the big magic that everyone has inside of them. It is the kind of book that helps spark creativity that perhaps you didn’t even realise you had. She discusses how everyone has a magic inside of them, that the universe gives them, and then its up to you whether you discover it, and do something with it. She explains doing something with your “magic” is the difference from living a mundane life to the extraordinary life. She discusses how fear can hold people back when it does not need to be. Fear has it’s place but it is not needed in every situation. Acknowledge your fear. Let it have it’s moment but don’t let it in the drivers seat. Learn to be comfortable with it, otherwise it will stop you from ever accomplishing everything. This book by Gilbert is written sweetly and has a gentle approach, helping everyone find their inner magic. I would recommend this book to someone who has thought of an idea for a project, but is too afraid to start, fearing they aren’t good enough. It would also be good for someone who doesn’t feel they are creative, but wish to be. It is an inspiring read to help inspire you to become something great.

3. Atomic Habits

By James Clear

People tend to overestimate the importance of single actions, and underestimate the power of making small habits repetitively over a long period of time. Clear takes examples from sports, business, and education along with evidence of psychology and neuroscience, and explains how tiny habits can grow into life altering outcomes that can lead us to healthier, happier, more productive lives. The books is broken up into four main ideas: 1. The power of 1 percent changes over time. 2. Forget goals and create systems instead. 3. Focus on identity over outcome. 4. The four fundamental laws of behaviour change. In short he says in order to make small changes in our daily lives, to be better over a long period of time, we need to make our goals: obvious, attractive, easy and satisfying. The book itself is quite complex, and has many gems that will help you become more productive, and help you achieve long term goals. I found myself writing down tons of tips and ideas for bettering my habits over 2021, and would recommend this book to anyone needing to achieve long term goals, or simply wanting to live a more productive lifestyle.

4. Tiny Habits

By BJ Fogg

Are you finding it hard to make changes in your life simply because you don’t have enough time? Good news is BJ Fogg tells you exactly how you can, simply and easily. Change doesn’t have to be hard! This book is based on 10 years of research and has been tested on 40,000 people. The three main principles of tiny habits is the ABC’s – anchor, behaviour and celebration. BJ encourages you to see behavioural change as a science experiment, where you will have fun, explore, and perhaps discover something new about yourself. There are benefits to creating tiny habits, with the most being that they are easy, quick and safe, but over a length of time can turn into something mighty. Fogg also gives exercises and prompts to help you in various scenarios, such as dealing with irritants in your life, as well as plenty of pictures and diagrams to help understand the fundamentals of tiny habits. At the back of the book Fogg also shares templates and master plans of tiny habits you can do in 15 life categories, to help you start creating tiny habits straight away. This book is a must read, and would suit anyone from students wanting to create better study habits, to farmers wanting to create better habits in their busy daily lives, to people wanting to create a business, or stay at home mums who want to have better a better routine.

5. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck

By Mark Manson

This book was the book that got me into productivity and self improvement books. It is also a book I’m sure you have all heard of, but perhaps you haven’t read it. If you have, you know how great and highly rated this book is, and for good reason. Mark Manson tells it like it is. His philosophy is showing people how to give less f*cks about the things you don’t care about, in order to have more f*cks for the things you do care about. The book is broken down into nine simple chapters, that all intertwine with chapters discussing how to say no, the value of suffering, and how you always have a choice in anything you do in life. If you think you are too advanced for this book, or think you already know everything, then Manson is here to give you a slice of humble pie. He talks about how you are wrong about everything, and how failure and pain is part of the process to living a healthier sustainable lifestyle. This book is very straight forward and to the point, like the title suggests. It’s easy to read and would be great for anyone.I think everyone would benefit from reading this book.

Revamped hardware store owners with big vision Visitors to Womersleys will be noticing some exciting changes in the shop and workshop as new owners Ali McLelland and Gerry Taege work on renovations. The North Canterbury locals purchased the business last November and were pleased to purchase a business with great potential, that is a true local business, not a member of a big franchise.

The business is ideally suited to Gerry who has always been involved in engineering, building and fixing things, and was the ideal change of focus for Ali, whose background is in nursing. Ali and Gerry have opened the shop right up with a new counter area which means that people are able to see what stock is available. They have been carrying out a survey to see what people would like them to stock, and the first thing is animal feed. They have feed for a range of animals – chickens, pigs, horses etc. They are currently working on a partnership with Farmlands to ensure competitive prices, and coming soon customers will be able to use their Farmlands Card for their purchases. They are also looking to provide landscaping and garden centre services. Gerry says “we want to be able to provide these services so people don’t have to travel to access them”. Along with this they will have hire equipment such as concrete mixers, scaffolding, nail guns, concrete floats, trowels , trailers, water blasters and more.

It is business as usual in the workshop with fabrication and welding jobs, although Gerry sees a lot of scope with the amount of machinery they have, and would like to see it all utilised. Ali is working on ideas for craft workshops such as working with resin, and possibly classes for women learning to use power tools. There is going to be a lot to see, as well as all the standard hardware store goods, so pop down, have a look around and a chat – you won’t be disappointed!

Jo says people may not have accessed support from the Trust before, and may feel that because they still have a job, they would not be eligible for help. However, many people have reduced incomes, or reduced hours because of Covid, and there are ways the Trust can support them. She says “one way we can help is to supply food, which would free up money to pay another bill that week”. There are other ways that the Trust can provide assistance, including firewood, help with medical bills and prescriptions. The Trust, situated at 37 Main Street, Oxford, offers a confidential, friendly service, and if you are not able to go into the office, please feel free to email jo@oxfordtrust.co.nz. or call 03 312 3006

Arrivals & Departures

Dr Seamus Flynn

Catherine Thompson

Yvonne Rattray

Over the past few weeks you may have noticed a few new faces at the Health Centre and some familiar faces missing so we would like to update you on the changes. After Christmas we were sad to see the departure of Elinor who was a stalwart in reception for the last few years and had become a friend to many in the local community. Elinor and her family have relocated to Christchurch and she has now found a new position in town. If it weren’t for the distance we know Elinor would have loved to stay with us as she enjoyed getting to know the community and we know she will miss you all. We will miss her caring nature and the delicious lemon muffins she used to supply us with! We also lost another vibrant member of the reception team when Melanie also resigned from the Practice this January. Melanie enjoyed getting to know the Oxford community and fully immersed herself in her role while she was here. Unfortunately, Melanie has now also relocated to Christchurch and has chosen to give up the commute to Oxford. We will all miss her style and her amazing shoes! We have welcomed Catherine and Yvonne to our reception team recently and they are both looking forward to getting to know you all. Catherine and Yvonne both live locally and are happy to be working closer to home. We have recently also said goodbye to Dr Alex Shaw, who quite a few of you will have met over the last year or so. Alex has taken up a position in Australia and will be relocating there with his family. Alex enjoyed getting to know the Oxford community and was a big help to us in a difficult year that included a pandemic and a lockdown! We wish him well in his future endeavours in Australia. We have been privileged to obtain the services of Dr Seamus Flynn who is a GP Registrar and he will fill the gap left by Alex. Seamus comes to us with a background in urgent care, working at the 24/7 Clinic and Greymouth Hospital. He has chosen to specialise in Rural General Practice and has committed to working with us on this journey for the foreseeable future. Seamus is looking forward to getting to know you and immersing himself in the Oxford community. Seamus has clinics at the Health Centre Monday-Thursday every week. Recently our District Nursing Team has also grown and we are pleased to introduce Tori and Erin to the community. They will be joining Lu and adding strength to our District Nursing Team. You may see them out and about in the little silver Health Centre car during the day as they look after our patients in the community. As a side note this car is very ancient. The nurses are currently squeezing in time to fund raise for the replacement of this vehicle especially with winter coming. If you would like to help them you can donate via our website on the Donate page. One thing you can guarantee is that although some of our team has changed they will all strive to bring the Oxford community the same excellent care that they have always had. Let’s hope 2021 is a brighter year and remember we are always available to assist you with all your healthcare needs. words by Robyn Salton

Mikes Update

BOT Update

Over the last month, we have had the chance to celebrate the achievements of the 2020 NCEA (Year 11, 12 and 13) learners in our Annual Academic Assembly. NCEA is our National qualification framework with typically Level 1 being sat in Year 11, Level 2 being sat in Year 12, and Level 3 being sat in Year 13. 2020 threw us many curveballs, in fact, it threw our planet a number of curve-balls. However, there is good news - in the face of adversity we succeeded. 2020 hit some records for us in academic achievement. I can tell you our NCEA Level 1 results are the best results as far back as I could retrieve figures from 10 years ago in 2010. It is well above national averages and above schools of similar status.

As a Board, we are here to work both with students and for everyone within our school community. The Board’s job is to see that everything that needs to be done gets done - legally and ethically and to ensure that every student at our school is able to attain his or her highest possible standard in educational achievement. We are here to represent the needs and aspirations of our community and are excited and looking forward to seeing what 2021 brings us. (Fingers crossed it is not as disruptive as the 2020 year!) As Board Chairperson I am more than happy to talk to anyone relating to governance matters of our school. To contact me please email me at boardchair@oxford.school.nz or phone 027 454 8778. Our other current Board of Trustees and dedicated team for 2021 are: Deputy Chairperson: Justin Taylor Parent Trustees: Sonya Miller, Rebecca Griffiths, Aaron Campbell Principal Mr Mike Hart Staff Trustee: Mrs Lesley Inch Student Trustee: Journie Karaitiana Board Secretary: Mrs Heather McLachlan

Congratulations to our current Year 12s (last year sitting NCEA Level 1) on their results last year. NCEA Level 2 results were similar - the best we have had since 2010 - again above national averages and schools of similar status. Congratulations to our current Year 13s (last year sitting NCEA Level 2). While that is a focus on achievement, NCEA can be endorsed with Merit and with Excellence. Back to our NCEA Level 1 results - over 50% of the 2020 Year 11 learners achieved with either Merit or Excellence endorsement. Again best results in the last 10 years, above national averages and above schools of similar status. These academics along with NCEA Levels 2 and 3 endorsements were celebrated today. Again well done to each and everyone of you. This clearly shows the academic success achieved at Oxford Area School competes with and in most cases exceeds schools throughout New Zealand. This certainly has set the bar high and is something this school and our community should be very proud of - I know our staff are. Below is a list of those who received an Endorsement Certificate in 2020.

MERIT Ella Taylor Zoe Newton Principal - Oxford Area School Adam Norton was awarded the Prime Minister's Vocational Excellence Award at our Senior Prize Giving in 2020. The award comes with a monetary value of $2000. Adam says “I was interested in getting into the Food Industry and chose to take Hospitality at school as well as doing a 2 Day Ara Dual Enrolment course. This gave me lots of experience and insight into being a chef...I was really surprised that I was given this award. My family and friends were all really pleased for me”. This was certainly evident at Senior Prize Giving when Adam was given a standing ovation with lots of loud cheers from his peers. “The prize money has meant that I have been able to purchase all of my chef equipment and uniforms, as well as having money left over to help with transport to and from Christchurch this year”. Year 12 and 13 students who are undertaking a vocational pathway and or related subjects can be nominated for the award, if they meet the criteria which includes a number of skills and attributes. The award is intended to help students thrive in their chosen career pathway.

Years 7-8 Beach Education By Emeric & Nicholas

On Friday the 5th of February 2021, the Year 7/8 classes went to beach education day at Spencerville Beach. There were many people who accompanied us, including seven teachers, six parents and five senior students. When we got to the beach the lifeguards got us to put our bags in the changing rooms and walk up the stairs to the meeting room ready to start the day. There were four lifeguards - Danny, Jade, Tom, and Jesse who taught us about rips, safety rules/equipment and first aid. Once everyone was in the meeting room and ready the lifeguards got us to split into four groups, with each lifeguard taking a different class. We had four stations which we rotated around. The first station was with Danny downstairs with the IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat). The things inside were two paddles in case the engine broke down, the second was a knife with a blunted tip made for cutting seaweed and ropes that might tangle up a stray swimmer or surfer. The next was a rescue tube that you bend around the waist of drowning swimmers. The next station was going up to the lifeguard tower with Jade. Up inside of it, there were 4 radios and two binoculars along with lots of papers. The lifeguards use it to watch out for rips and look where the safest place is to put the flags. They also look out for people in trouble or drowning. The next station was first aid with Tom. He had a mannequin and performed first aid on it, and also showed us the equipment in the medical bag that the lifeguards used. The last station was with Jesse where he showed us the different boards they used and how they rescued people with them. After morning tea we went down to the beach and started playing some beach games. First, we played octopus twice and then played a game called buddy’s.

www.facebook.com/oxfordarea

If you got out during the game then you went and built sand castles. After that was lunch. Once lunch was finished we got changed and went upstairs where we learned about rips, how to get out of them, how they are caused, and how to identify them. Then finally we went in the water for an hour. The waves were pretty high and the currents were strong. The adults and parent helpers formed a square which we had to stay in. It was a fun experience and the Year 7/8 Syndicate really enjoyed it.

Vocational Excellence at Oxford. words by Amy Riach - photo supplied

For many senior students, making a decision about where to go and what to do after school can be tough. But Adam Norton is one 16 year old who has it all under control. With aspirations to become a chef, Adam excelled in hospitality at school, and over the course of 2020 was enrolled in a weekly culinary course at Ara. The course gave Adam the opportunity to work towards his career goals outside of school, and at Senior Prizegiving last year, he received the Prime Minister’s vocational excellence award for his achievements. The well deserved award came with a $2,000 scholarship, one which Adam immediately put to use, buying his Chef’s uniform and a set of formidable looking knives. That was his last year at Oxford, and now Adam is attending Ara full time. Quickly moving up from the introductory course he was enrolled in over 2020, Adam is now working at level 4 of the hospitality curriculum, in a class composed primarily of much older students. Sadly his classmates of last year all enrolled in different courses, but Adam says he still catches up with them in the hallways. The course is a mixture of both cooking and theory, and the class moves around working kitchens in Christchurch. In the words of Adam, “It’s so cool”, and he hopes to earn his diploma before finding a job in a kitchen of his own. Last year, Adam said he had the opportunity to try “A little bit of everything”, but this year the course is becoming more specialised. The class is centred around cooking rather than baking, which is something Adam vastly prefers. Making meals is much more fun than baking is, or so I’ve been told, but Adam has the ability to do both. His course runs 4 days a week, so it’s certainly more work than it was last year, but Adam is still thoroughly enjoying it. Everyone at Oxford is proud of what Adam has achieved, and we wish him all the best with his course and his future career. I wouldn’t be surprised if he runs his own restaurant one day, and I think everyone will be complimenting the chef.

Keeping Healthy

Oxford Club host SI Workingmen’s Club words by Beka Hunt - photos supplied

with

Tracie Miller Treating insect bites and stings Most insect bites and stings cause small reactions that are confined to the area of the bite (localised reactions). They can usually be treated at home. As soon as you've been stung by a bee, remove the sting and venom sac if it's been left in your skin. Do this by scraping it out, either with your fingernails or something with a hard edge, such as a bank card. Don't pinch the sting out with your fingers or a pair of tweezers because you may spread the venom. Minor bites and stings can be treated by: • washing the affected area with soap and water • placing a cold compress (a flannel or cloth cooled with cold water) over the affected area to reduce swelling If the bite or sting is painful or swollen, you can also: • wrap an ice pack in a towel and place it on the swelling • take painkillers • use a spray or cream that contains local anaesthetic, antihistamine or mild hydrocortisone on the affected area to prevent itching and swelling • take an antihistamine tablet to help reduce swelling See your GP if the local swelling is severe or if the redness and itching gets worse or doesn't clear up after a few days. Insect bites can sometimes become infected so see your GP if the bite or sting fills with pus and feels tender to touch, your glands swell up and you feel unwell with flu-like symptoms. Some people are particularly sensitive or allergic to stings. They have a life threatening reaction called anaphylaxis which results in swelling of the face, difficulty breathing and a rash over their entire body, not just in the region of the sting. This is a medical emergency and must be treated as soon as possible so call an ambulance.

Friday the 5th of Feb saw 160 players register for the South Island Working Men's Club Golf tournament. Players practised on the Friday afternoon, at the Waimakariri golf club, getting the feel of the course and their competition. Much like The Olympics, the annual event is held in a new location each year. Also, the hosts are often the most favourable towns in New Zealand, so Oxford was naturally a prime spot. Our Working Men’s Club had advance warning to smooth out the wrinkles, but an event as large remains quite a handful. Clubs based across the South Island entered teams of four, which consisted of players from all walks of golf. Each day saw fine weather, and the play advanced without a hitch; teams would begin at 7.30am, or compete in the early afternoon. Brian Thompson, a key coordinator, spoke of the many compliments the club received on the ‘pristine conditions’ of the course and the tournament, so the hard work definitely paid off. In their teams of four, each player began with a personal handicap that was subtracted from their own final score. For example, if one's overall ‘gross’ score is 90 with a handicap of 20, the ‘net’ score is 70. This ‘stroke play’ allows for teams to compete, another facet of the sport. To determine the overall score, the net totals are combined within their team. In this way, anyone was able to participate- no matter their experience- with two trophies up for grabs. The Oxford Working Men’s club hosted not only the tournament itself, but also an evening meal and awards ceremony to congratulate the players. At the end of the night, Woolston club took home the ‘gross’ trophy, with the Waimate Country Club winning the ‘net’ trophy. Another key element of competition was the raffle, where lucky golfers won major prizes. During their stay, teams bunkered down in the town’s accommodation and enjoyed all that Oxford offers. The turnout was excellent, and the food was good. At the end of the long weekend, I think it is safe for the organisers of this event to celebrate. Oxford has scored another hole in one.

Happy New Year to you all! Everyone at Karadean would like to say a huge Thank You to all our local Volunteers who have helped us with our Christmas Party and our Outings. You are all very much appreciated. Would also like to thank Oxford Area School for bringing in gifts for all of our Residents. The Students had purchased these gifts themselves and then delivered them! The Residents were very appreciative! Thanks to the Oxford Early Learning Centre, who came in to see us before Christmas and perform their Nativity Play which was enjoyed by all Residents. We would like to thank the Team at Oxford Fresh Choice and Oxford Pharmacy for all their help with our weekly shopping trips! This is one of the highlights of our Residents week, so thank you for helping to make it special. We have been busy at Karadean over the Christmas period. We made a few trips up to the Winter Wonderland, which was amazing and loved by everyone! Had a visit to our local museum. Was great to see all the old machinery. There was even some of our Residents old items there! The Volunteers at the Museum were so helpful and knowledgeable. Take care and stay safe, The Team at Karadean.

Leadership Camp 2021.

words by Amy Riach - photos supplied

Term one at Oxford is well under way, and as we enter the new school year, a new group of student leaders have stepped up. With two head students and three deputies, the student leadership team of 2021 is in good hands. And preparations have already begun. On January 29th, in the week before we returned to school, Oxford’s head students and house leaders headed away on camp. Together with Mrs Don and Mr Hines, we set off towards Orohaki, and spent time getting to know each other as a team. Of course this included team building activities, some more outlandish than others, and records were made and broken. We discussed what it meant to be a leader, and laid plans for this term's upcoming House Day. Members of our senior leadership team came to visit and provided valued input, though it is possible the real drawcard was Mr Hines’ cooking. That night we stayed at Birch Hill lodge, and found ourselves awake the next morning at a less than reasonable hour, although I’m not sure it can even be considered morning when it’s still dark outside. We were going to walk up the Birch hill track and see the sunrise from up high. Unfortunately the weather had other ideas, but we still managed to spot the rising sun through the cloud, and it felt good to have achieved something so early in the morning, before coffee or even daylight. However the highlight of the trip was guest speaker David Williams, who works in a leadership role with some of New Zealand’s largest companies, consulting with frontline managers from Fonterra and Air New Zealand . He talked to us about his own experience as a leader, but also shared his insight into how we could all grow as leaders ourselves, introducing us to the principles of leadership. His speech quickly became what was more of a conversation, and I think we all took something away from it. It was certainly a great experience for all of us as we head into Term 1, and a massive thank you to Mrs Don and Mr Hines who made it possible.

COUNCIL UPDATE with Councillor Wendy Doody

March 2021 Recycling It was great to see the community took on board what was required and made a great effort to reduce the levels of contamination. In week 2 Oxford residents went from 47 contaminated bins from 134 bins collected to Week 6: 12 bins contaminated from 271 bins collected. We do still need to reduce this number of contaminated bins being collected so if in doubt then put into the rubbish bin. A big thank you to the residents that have taken on the roll of having their recycling bins pass inspection you are a “Star Performer” in Recycling.

On Wednesday Councillors and North Canterbury Sports and Recreation Trust members had the opportunity to view progress on the Indoor Court Facility – what an asset this will be for the whole of Waimakariri. The acoustics in the indoor court facility are fantastic and will be perfect for any function wishing to book the venue or sit in comfort to watch sport being played there. The building is on course to be completed late July after that the fit out will commence, NCSRT may have to wait to open their Gym and fitness centre due to getting special equipment shipped from Spain. Covid certainly creates issues with shipping services to our shores.

On a Personal Note I would like to acknowledge the passing of Valmai Thompson (nee Reed) who lived all her life in the Oxford area and the long service contribution she gave in a voluntary capacity to the community. For those living in Baxter Place, this was a request to council by Valmai to name the street in the new subdivision to acknowledge her ancestors who owned property there.

Well the kids have been at school a month already, and time keeps moving. Before we know it, it will be Easter, and the kids will be back on school holidays. Burglaries are still occurring in our community, so please keep an eye out for any suspicious activity. It’s great to see and hear all the chatter on Facebook letting our community know who and what to keep an eye out for, and that it is getting reported through the right channels as well. There has been a spike in 4X4 vehicles being stolen in the greater area. Toyota Landcruisers and Hiluxs as well as Nissan Safaris in particular. If you are able, can you park them out of sight so prying eyes cannot see them from the road. Road safety is a big part of policing, and there is a great burden that rests on everyone’s shoulders. There have been far too many tragic accidents in the greater community, and some close to home. Please be responsible, if not for your safety then for your family’s and the families of those you share the road with every day. Stop does mean stop. Not roll slowly. Stop, look and look again. One last thing, with the Roar fast approaching, there have been increased reports of both hunting and poaching in the area. Be safe out there, and please identify your target. We all want to get back safe and sound to our loved ones. You never know who you might meet out there.

2021 has started with our Oxford truck attending more than double the number of call outs to date compared to the same time last year! We are finding that we are able to transport more patients to a medical destination, and while in the city we are often asked if we can attend other calls to help with the heavy workloads being experienced. With Covid still being relevant please remember to wash your hands often, observe social distancing and if you show any symptoms please stay at home and follow the health line advice. If you have called an ambulance and have any symptoms in your house please let this be known to the call taker. At this time of the year there are a lot of outdoor activities taking place. Please remember if you are tramping to take plenty of water, warm clothing, sun hat, and sunblock and a way of contacting help if the need arises. If you do get injured call for help, keep warm and stay put and wait for help to arrive. Stay safe and enjoy our fantastic outdoors. Cust Oxford St John are a volunteer ambulance ambulance station, we are always looking for new recruits. If you are interested in finding out more about how rewarding it is to be part of a great team volunteering for your community, please call the station on 033123516 and leave your details and someone will be in touch.

It was a very quiet start to the year for the Brigade with only three calls in January. Two calls were to private smoke alarm activations which were false alarms. The other call was to a motor cyclist who collided with a bridge and received serious injuries.

Thank you for your time. Until next month, be safe. Feel safe.

The Oxford Station is not manned if you require an ambulance please call 111
