MAY 2021 Happy May! We hope you have all enjoyed the magnificent autumn weather we have been having. Oxford is fortunate to have an amazing Art gallery – Arts in Oxford. This month the gallery has a new exhibition, FOLIO; an exhibition of Oxford Area School NCEA Art Folios by students achieving Excellence. Their column is on page 13 for more information. If musicals are your thing - Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat is on in Rangiora between May 13- 29 Check out their ad below for details. As always, thank you for reading, and thank you for letting us know what is going on in the district, for our stories.

The 2021 Mt Oxford Odyssey sure lived up to it's name of We had four seasons in one day at Coopers Creek. We went from rain to sun, the mountain completely cloaked in snow/sleet/cloud then clearing so we could peak the top.... the day really had it all! Luckily for those of us at the Race Village we had near on perfect conditions. Just a bit of rain at the start of the day, but not enough to stop the smiles or the atmosphere. Thanks to Russ at Canterbury Weather Updates, we had an hour by hour forecast that was incredibly accurate. Something we are very grateful for ,as it gives us confidence to run the event safely.
Salewa Marathon Winner Gavin Dale on his final descent. Photo credit: Sean Beale.
The Oxford LandSAR team were out in force, as were a great bunch of volunteers, who were keen to make the day memorable and safe. The athletes that took on the Salewa Mountain Marathon, the Further Faster 32km Mountain Challenge, and the TeamCP Half Marathon bore the brunt of the conditions. The summit was pretty brutal and looking at the photos, and hearing the post-race chat, it was pretty clear that this year we were really experiencing a true mountain race. The TeamCP 15km competitors had it a little easier, with no snow underfoot or challenging weather to contend with. But this trail is no walk in the park and has challenges of it's own, maybe just without snow and sleet numbing the faces!
The Salewa Mountain Marathon saw competitors heading out over Mt Oxford, then dropping steeply to the Wharfedale Hut, doing a loop on Black Hill, then back up and over Mt Oxford. This has an elevation gain of 3500m over the three climbs and descents, and sees competitors truly battling mind and body to get back to the finish line. We saw some incredible times this year, with the conditions adding an extra challenge. Less than half an hour split the top three men. From Clyde, Gavin Dale made it look easy, coming home in 5 hours, 42 minutes. Christchurch men Oliver Linscott and Zack Reimer took out second and third respectively; Oliver in 5hr 55 mins, Zack home in 6 hr 5 minutes. The women's race was equally tight with a half hour difference splitting the top three. Veronika made the trip from Queenstown worthwhile, taking out the title in 7 hr and 38 minutes. Local legend Sia Svendsen chased her home for second place, coming in at 8 hr and 2 mins. Another local Hannah Presswood came in third at 8 hr and 12 mins. This year we introduced a team’s event where competitors had to run together for the duration of the event. Lower Hutt men’s team Maungaraki Vert Chasers, comprising of Grant Pritchard and Samuel Grave, finished in 9 hr and 38 mins. Locals Kerry McCorry and Scott Evans finishing in the mixed teams in 12 hours and 40 minutes. 2021 saw the introduction of the Further Faster 32km Mountain Challenge. The new course took in sections of the marathon and 21km course, with some extra running over the back of the mountain. We were really pleased with the numbers giving this new course a crack, including some pretty impressive competitors doing their first ever event!

We were looking forward to seeing what times would come through and were impressed with how quick the leaders were. In the mens race Daniele Danesin stormed home in 3 hours 31 minutes. Local man Tom Kissel and Fairlie local Ben Brown racing each other to the finish; Tom pipping Ben across the line in 3 hours 51 mins, Ben home in 3 hours 53 minutes. The women’s race equally tight. Blenheim athlete Katie Morgan a clear winner in 4 hours and 2 minutes. Tessa Walker and Sez Peddie only a minute apart; Tessa coming in at 4 hours 36 minutes, Sez at 4 hours and 37 minutes. The teams event saw Harrejohns take out the title in 5 hours and 50 minutes, The Youngs in second place at 5 hours and 59 minutes, with Bun Runners coming in third place at 6 hours and 14 minutes. We look forward to seeing how these numbers stack up next year with possibly different conditions on the summit.
The TeamCP Half Marathon is the original event of the Mt Oxford Odyssey and it’s great to see numbers staying strong, including in the tramp category. Andrew John Kirkcaldie took out the mens race in 2hr 38 mins. Andrew’s friends informed us on the day that he is a top hockey player, who had to rush off to a game after he finished on the mountain. The Mt Oxford Odyssey was his first event and he was even using borrowed gear. Clearly a natural, we can’t wait to see how Andrew progresses in his running career.

a true mountain event. The men’s race was super tight with the top three men only 5 minutes apart. Tim Gruijters chased Andrew home in 2 hrs and 41 mins, Mitch Ireton closely behind in 2 hrs and 43 mins. The women’s race also saw just 5 minutes between the top three. Christchurch woman Alice Riddel only just behind the leading men, racing home in 2 hr 50 mins, followed closely by Nory Lansing and Miriam Clark; 2 hr 53 and 2 hr 55 respectively. The TeamCP 15km trail event saw a few not turn up on the day, weather putting off a small contingent getting to the start line. Turns out Coopers Creek was the place to be though with the skies clearing in time for the race start and great conditions throughout the race. Times are always impressively fast and this year was no exception. 16 minutes split the top three men and women. Josh Merrin, Allan Staite, and Casey Taylor all racing home with three minutes separating them. Josh home in 1hr 31, Allan in 1hr 33, and Casey in 1hr 34. Helen Gillespie led the women to the finish in 1 hr 37, Ngaire Baker chasing strong in 1hr 46 and Kristina Arcus in 1hr 47. Congrats on a great race! It sure was competitive out there!

CHICKEN, GREEN OLIVE & LEMON TAGINE
4-6 Serves 4-6 chicken thighs 2 preserved lemons ½ cup olive oil 2 onions diced 3 cloves garlic, crushed Handfull of fresh coriander chopped Handfull chopped parsley ½ tsp ras el hanout 2 tsp powdered ginger 1 tsp turmeric Pinch of saffron threads 1 cup pitted green olives ½ cup chicken stock 50g salted butter Toppings Greek yogurt Toasted slivered almonds
Method
Recipe by Louize Juniper
Remove flesh from the preserved lemon, place in bowl, add diced onion, garlic, Ras el hanout, ginger, salt and pepper, saffron and half the olive oil. Massage this mix into the chicken flesh. If possible leave the chicken to infuse (Overnight in the fridge would be good) Place remaning olive oil in casserole dish, scrape the onion and spice mix off the chicken and put into casserole dish. Place chicken on top of onion and spice mix. Add whole pitted green olives, finely sliced preserved lemon rind. Pour over chicken stock and dot with salted butter. Heat Tagine/casserole dish on hob to simmer. Cover with casserole lid and place in oven 200 degrees C for 1 hour. Serve and top with Greek Yogurt and toasted Almonds. Lebanese couscous or regular couscous is the normal acompliment to go with a tagine but rice is also used.
Notes
A Casserole dish with well-fitting lid is perfect to use instead of the Traditional Ceramic Tagine. Whole chicken can be used for this dish too. I just remove the lid in the last 30 mins of cooking, then remove the whole Chicken, remove the flesh, shred the meat and stir back into the sauce. Ras el hanout is a middle eastern mix of spices and can be found at all good supermarkets (Rangiora Produce has a great selection of different spices) Preserved Lemons can be found at Fresca Mediterranean, Conway Lane, Rangiora, along with Lebanese and normal Couscous.
Enjoy..
Green family tours North Island with their band The Wax Birds words & photos by Candice Breeze
The Green family travelled throughout the North Island over Christmas Break, singing and strumming in their band The Wax Birds – a husband and wife duo that they developed over lockdown. “It’s something we’ve always wanted to do, but hadn’t quite got around to it. But during the lockdown in 2020, we had a lot of time to write music and record songs, and decided to just go for it,” Jo said. Jo and Pete met in Church over 15 years ago, through their love for music. Pete played the bass that his church bought him from Cash Converters, and went on to play throughout college, and in a band in England. Jo has also been singing since she was 13, participating through the church. In November 2020, at their tiny house in Cust, Jo and Pete, recorded their first acoustic jazz style album entitled “Slow Rise” With an itch to travel and see the North Island they decided to pack up their family of four and pay their way through their music. “On Boxing Day we took the ferry to Wellington. We were able to get for free tickets in exchange for an hour and a half gig on the ferry.” They travelled their way through Wellington, Porirua, Palmerston North, Hamilton and the Coromandel performing gigs at retirement villages, farmers markets or hotels, in exchange for a free night stay. “We met some cool people along the way. We camped out in peoples gardens. it was a great experience,” Pete said. They also encouraged their family members to buy experiences for their kids for Christmas instead of physical gifts, which enabled them to go to the Waitomo Caves, various Zoos and aquariums. six

Government Announces Housing Shakeup The Government has taken drastic action in an attempt to cool the housing market, reduce prices and make it easier for first home buyers to get on the property ladder. It is still too early to tell if the measures will be effective and how it will affect other areas of the economy. What we do know is that there are still thousands of people looking for a house to buy and that price increases, in any sector, are driven by a lack of supply. Here is a summary of the recent announcements.
“Bright line test” extended from five to ten years: This means an investor selling a rental property within ten years must pay tax on any capital gain.
The bright line test will remain at five years for new builds and, in most circumstances, will not apply to a family home.
Investors can no longer claim a tax deduction on mortgage interest: Businesses have always been able to reduce tax by offsetting expenses necessary to generate an income. Under the new law, to be phased in over four years, this will no longer apply to mortgage interest for a property investment business.
$3.8 billion infrastructure fund: This is designed to fund services, like roads, water and sewerage, to accelerate housing developments. It is unclear how this fund will be accessed and by whom.
Di Moreira M 027 848 8020
Easier access to a First Home Grant: Income and purchase price caps have increased so more first home buyers who have saved a 5% deposit are eligible for the $10,000 First Home Grant. The new income caps are $95,000 for a single person and $150,000 for two or more buyers. Purchase price caps vary between regions. To check if you are eligible visit kaingaora.govt.nz.

Oxford Author Winning International Awards words by Amy Riach - photos supplied
Many Oxford students will recognise the book titled ‘The Day Dad Blew up the Cowshed’; a picture book about life on a rural New Zealand farm, and what happens when a returned serviceman decides that it’s time to update the shed. Well it turns out that Jennifer Somervell, author of the award winning book, lives and writes right here in Oxford. Self published, her books have become a family affair, with sister Margery the artist behind all the illustrations, niece Ezra André the designer, and husband Ken responsible for everything computer reliant, including the back-page research for Jennifer’s Tales from the Farm series. The humorous books are all based on true stories, formed from the tales that shaped Jennifer’s exceptionally kiwi childhood, growing up in the 1970’s on a farm in the Hawkes Bay. Her latest addition to the series is titled ‘The Old Truck and the Flood’, and the newest book stars Jennifer’s old farm truck, a 1921 Model 10 Republic. The truck is still being driven around the farm today, and it turns 100 this year, much to the delight of all the Canterbury kids reading about his adventures! Impressively, each of Jennifer’s books have won awards, but it’s her recent stand alone tale that is really making waves. ‘A Baa-rilliant Adventure’ is Jennifer’s first stand alone book, and was only published last October. A creative nativity story, the picture book recently won second place in the Illumination Book Awards. The awards are designed to celebrate books with a Christian world view, and are open to publications from everywhere in the English-speaking world, so coming in second is a huge achievement for the Oxford based author.
To date, her books have sold over 18,000 copies, which Jennifer says “to me is just astonishing, because they’re just our farm stories”. But that’s exactly what makes her books so appealing for New Zealand kids. According to Jennifer “They’re their stories too, and they recognise themselves in them”. She likes to engage with those kiwi kids who are reading her books, and Jennifer travels around primary schools throughout New Zealand, reading her books, and even recruiting classroom kids to act them out. In between all those school visits Jennifer is still writing, with two books in production this year. She likes to write far away from her office, drafting ideas over coffee at the cafes in Oxford, “and any other cafe she can find!”, adds Ken. According to Jennifer “I consider coffee a business expense now!”, which sounds like an ideal use of the budget if you ask me. All of Jennifer's books are great stories, filled with that famous kiwi humor that kids across New Zealand will understand, and I’m sure that the kids in Canterbury are greatly looking forward to reading her newest additions! Jennifer’s books are available at Emma’s at Oxford, so if you ever spot them there, go check them out!
But reaching this point has been no easy feat, and Jennifer’s writing career has been a long journey. Her first book wasn’t published until 2012, but even as a child Jennifer wanted to write, and she’s been doing just that for most of her life. In fact Ken has always seen her as an author, and even if Jennifer can’t remember that far back, her husband says “We got married 33 years ago, and she was writing then”. But the stories that Jennifer writes didn’t start off as hers. According to Jennifer “My father was a gifted storyteller, and I always felt like I wanted to capture those stories”. It’s clear that the author has never been short of inspiration, and the family’s penchant for anecdotes is something Ken has picked up on too, telling me that “Jen’s family generates stories like no other family I’ve heard of”.
Hemp Seed Oil for Pets. Just another Fad? Fish Oils, Flax seed oils etc. There certainly have been a roller coaster of fad supplements for pets over the years, but Hemp Seed Oil has the potential to outlast. Here’s why. Hemp Seed contains GLA`s, (Gamma- Linoleic Acid) a unique omega-6 fatty acid that possesses strong anti-inflammatory abilities. Omega 6`s overall are viewed as unhealthy but the GLA is the exception to the rule & essential in their diet. • It is a key Anti-Inflammatory • It regulates Hormones • It supports healthy Skin & Coat Balancing Omegas As with anything, balance is important & the body needs more than omega-3s alone. Hemp Seed Oil contains a more balanced Omega 3 & 6 ratio. When your dog’s omega-6 and omega-3 fats aren’t balanced, the body produces too much AA and it leads to inflammation. How To Know If Your Dog Needs Hemp Seed Oil Inflammation should appear in times of short-term trauma. But ongoing infection, long-term reactions, stimulants or allergies lead to chronic inflammation. Then GLA is essential to his diet to reduce the inflammation. • Some causes of chronic inflammation can be Poor diet/ processed food, Chemical Flea/Worm Treatments, Medication, Environmental toxins, Aging. • Some signs of chronic Inflammation are often Diarrhea, Constipation, Skin rashes, Lethargy, Digestive problems, Arthritis, Decreased mobility Why Choose hemp seed oil Hemp Seed Oil is a sustainable source of GLA for your dog … and it’s rich in trace minerals. You can use it internally or topically for skin problems. As an added bonus, Hemp Seed Oil is also a good source of SDA (stearidonic acid). SDA is good for the heart. Even better! Pro Tip: Combine Hemp Seed Oil GLA with Pure Green Lipped Mussel powder as an extra boost of Anti-Inflammatory Fats ! The Feedshack is a small locally owned & operated business specialising in diet related issues, & sourcing natural healthy nutrition and quality pet solutions & accessories. New Trainers for Oxford Fitness Centre words by Beka Hunt
Recently, the Oxford Fitness Centre farewelled a trainer. Although it’s sad to see a regular go, Jane Hinz (an incredibly helpful receptionist) says; “you can feel it amping up. It [new trainers] brings new life into the gym.” So, let’s meet our new personal trainers; Rory O’Brien and Maureen Lambe. Maureen has been in the fitness industry for 17 years, whilst Rory has worked for around 10 years. They both have training in all areas of fitness, but enjoy teaching 'functional fitness’- conditioning for everyday life. Rory began his fitness career as a participant in a ‘transformation challenge’- which he won. When he won his second challenge, it was clear he had found his calling. Rory has always had a passion for sport- particularly Rugby and League, but claims he’s too old to take part. It’s a bonus for his dog, as the surrounding wilderness works wonders for walks, so there’s more time for adventures. Rory enjoys that part of Oxford- ‘it’s not too far to go to be among the trees and in the mountains." While he is still adapting to the new community, Rory truly believes in physical wellbeing only being half of the puzzle. In his time in Oxford, he hopes to set up a support system for men struggling with mental health, as well as a youth gym program (currently in the works.) Maureen also endorses enriching others; “Humans are made to move. I like to try and pass this mentality on to my clients at the Oxford Fitness Centre- they motivate me.” She recently returned from the UK after working full time as a Personal trainer and a CrossFit coach. Originally from Nelson, she is enjoying the classic Oxford personalities. “Working at the Oxford Fitness Centre is awesome. The people are lovely and it has a real community feel to it. Everyone seems to know everyone!” When training clients, she tends to stay away from most machines and focus on that style of functional fitness- Maureen listed exercises such as “free weights, kettlebells, dumbbells, bodyweight movements and core exercises,” as examples. In the gym, she focuses on helping others better themselves. Outside of hours, she can be found participating in anything from bouldering and stand up paddle boarding, to movie watching or even training with her own coach to compete in CrossFit. Wherever they are, be it in the mountains or on the water, both Maureen and Rory always teach maintaining good fitness habits. Maureen’s reasoning is, “fitness is for everyone. It can and should be adapted to keep everyone challenged no matter what your background, age, body type, goals or experience.” Rory unknowingly echoed her when he told me “you’ve got a body for a reason and that is to move.” This is why you can find them in the Oxford fitness centre, helping everyone they can. Their heart is in their work. Oxford has struck gold, so stop in to see what the fuss is all about- or even to meet two new members of our community. After all, what’s the worst that could happen? Burpies?

Hi
I’m so excited to be coming to you in a new space here at the Observer. Many of you will have seen my column which I have very much enjoyed writing from my little second hand store in Darfield. Changes have been afoot and polkadotcom has sold the store to make more time to spend one-on-one inspiration with you people. It’s an incredibly exciting chapter which allows me to bring my experience as a trained stylist, but also having owned a boutique that is not dictated to by trends, but much more by style and personality.

This change has come at the perfect time, and is very much in the air. Literally ‘in the air’ at the moment! Leaves are changing. The air has that crisp feel to it, but mixed in with the hot autumn sun. Autumn is the season that will test if your wardrobe is interlocking or not. Ladybird contender for NZ’s oldest Donkey words by Beka Hunt - Photos Tammy Pfahlert
The cats vs dogs debate has started its fair share of arguments. It's now time to move on and introduce a new contender; the donkey. This change of heart is the result of a trip to meet one of New Zealand's oldest donkeys, Ladybird. When the previous owner could no longer care for Ladybird and her mate Nero, they were rehomed with Oxford local, Jaccy Roberts. Ladybird’s exact birthday was lost in the move, but her past owner did confirm the year of birth. Ladybird is now between 33 and 34 years old. A recent article in the New Zealand Donkey and Mule Society newsletter featured the elderly equine, saying “she is a serious competitor for the oldest donkey in NZ”- as most elderly donkeys have unknown birthdays, it is impossible to truly claim the title. Yet for her age, Ladybird remains incredibly unproblematic- only requiring a separate diet to her paddock mates. Each morning and evening, Jaccy soaks “gumnuts”, softening them for Ladybird’s worn teeth. Donkeys are incredibly social animals, so she is saved from sharing them amongst her paddock mates; Nero, Genevieve, Sam, Geppetto and Bertie. Whilst Ladybird is the front runner, her buddies are not far behind in terms of age, and Nero seemed to be making up for lost

speed when he was chasing the new puppy from their field! Interestingly, the donkeys politely wait until they can see the bathroom light switched on in the mornings, before they begin braying, and it is never loud enough to disturb the peace. As they are retired show donkeys, one could say they have standards. Jaccy explained “I can just go out into the middle of the paddock and pick their feet”- a feat that shines light on her gentle treatment. Whilst most might not consider donkeys as an excellent pet, Jaccy recalls attending a vintage car rally, and watching as they gave children rides in the donkey wagon. “I remember sitting there thinking, that’s me when I’m older. ” Now she couldn’t bear to part with her brood. “If I bred them, I wouldn’t be able to get rid of them.” She’s even included the equines in her will, so if anything untimely happens, they will be surrendered to the Donkey and Mule society’s rehoming center. If you’re searching for the secret to donkey care success, Jaccy is the one to approach. The evidence is in the buckets of soaked gumnuts and the nibble marks on my notebook. Those in her care are still kicking, and even Ladybird was looking spry. You can glimpse the family among the tree stumps at the Pumula homestead- 'Pumula’ fittingly meaning 'the tree under which we rest' in Zulu. Now, you can drive past knowing it is the home of a donkey that is quietly achieving greatness, with her foster family and gumnuts on the side. Can’t get much better than that!

Hosting CASA fest last month was a wonderful way to round out our term. 240 competitors from all six Canterbury Area Schools. There simply are so many people to thank from the organisation of the catering to billeting - we are so grateful for the support we received from the whole community. At the end of the day, the festival is all about the people. We saw old friendships rekindled, new friendships formed with not only the students but the supporting staff. I do need to make a special mention of what we have since dubbed our CASA fest Queens - Lesley Inch and Deb Baggot. These two have had a real stop and start to this festival as it was first scheduled in 2020 and COVID affected. We all can certainly agree, with their leadership, it was a fantastic event. Our student media team have assembled a number of videos and articles curating a great archive of this event. Every five years Area School Principals are eligible to apply for a 10week sabbatical to undertake professional learning, reflection and rejuvenation. I have been awarded a sabbatical for Term 2 this year. During this time I intend to complete a six-week course run through Harvard Graduate School of Education. This course focuses on navigating the complexities of leadership in a time of disruption. I will also spend time visiting schools to enhance this study. We have spent considerable time ensuring that this absence is smooth and also allows for internal growth in our school.
Wow, already the first term of the year has disappeared on us! And what an extremely busy term it has been with lots of great learning happening in and outside of the classrooms. And what a way to finish our school term by hosting the annual CASAFest event, three-day sports and cultural exchange amongst the six Canterbury Area Schools.
So for Term 2, the Senior Leadership structure will be as follows: Acting Principal - Sharyn Varcoe Deputy Principal Year 1-6 - Jacqui Paterson Acting Deputy Principal Year 7-13 - Lesley Inch Acting Assistant Principal - Justin Thompson During this same time, Tanya Wells (Team Lead Year 4-6) will also be on sabbatical during Term 2. Some of the other staffing changes you will see are: Acting Team Leader Year 4-6 - Bec Hart Acting Team Leader Year 7-8 - Claudia Faulkner Kia ora koutou, Mike Hart - Principal
It is a big undertaking to host this awesome tournament. To those of you that have played a part in helping with this event, whether it be an organizer, host of billeted students, all the volunteers for sporting activities, food preparation and everyone else I’ve failed to mention, we thank you all. Upon the start of term 2 things will be a little different within the Senior Leadership Team here at Oxford Area School. Last year the Board approved for our Principal, Mike Hart, to apply for sabbatical leave for term 2 of this year. We believed this sabbatical would be very beneficial for both Mike and the school. Mike was deservingly granted this leave. This time gives Mike the opportunity to not only step back from a very busy Principal's position but to also explore schools that have implemented New Pedagogies for Deep Learning, learning our school is very interested in looking at. With the major property redevelopment coming we would like to look at incorporating this type of learning within the development of our build. We hope Mike enjoys this period of time away from the school, it is definitely well earned! With Mike’s absence, Sharyn Varcoe will be the Acting Principal. Jacqui Paterson is to continue as Deputy Principal Y1-6 and act as Principal in Sharyn’s absence. Lesley Inch moves to Acting Deputy Principal Y7-13 and Justin Thompson will be the new Acting Assistant Principal. We would like to congratulate and thank these four people and we look forward to working with you during our next term.

Queenstown Mega Trip 2021 by Justin Thompson Last term the Adventure Based Management, Geography and History classes travelled to Queenstown, to research Gold Mining, Tourism and Land Use, and for the opportunity to take part in tourist activities. The activities the students were able to take part in included AJ Hackett Bungy, Shotover Jet, Skyline Gondola and Luge. Whilst in Queenstown the Geography and ABM students researched land use in Queenstown, looked at the Queenstown Marathon and the Sustainability of Queenstown as a tourist destination. This group had a lovely talk from Arrowtown Lakes District Museum which gave them the history of tourism development in the Queenstown region. The History students had an amazing opportunity looking at the archives and museum studying various aspects of the Gold mining history in the region. The students learnt a lot from their time away and got to experience some awesome activities that Queenstown has to offer. As one of the leaders of the group I would like to thank the students who worked hard and really took every opportunity while away on this trip. I would also like to thank Mrs Gilpin and Mrs Don for their help and support to make this trip happen. I know the students are now well equipped for the assessments they will be working on in the coming months.

CASA FEST by Amy Riach Oxford was planning CASAfest all the way back in 2019, and the annual tournament has been a great success! The 5 visiting Area schools arrived in Oxford on Wednesday, and the opening ceremony began at 10:45 that morning. After our mihi whakatau, and an impressive haka from both the visiting and the hosting schools, all of the players got up to perform their CASAfest song, team creations that included soundtracks from The Lion King and Thomas the Tank Engine. And by 12:00 that day CASAfest was well under way! The inter-schools tournament lasts for three days, and consisted of 6 rounds, giving each team a chance to try out all the different challenges. The competition includes more than just sports, and players designed cupcakes, competed in Debating, and took part in a Stem challenge and a Quiz. CASAfest is all about taking part and having fun, and the 6 Area schools each took the Fair Play oath, declaring unanimously to play hard and play fair, to be gracious winners and dignified losers. And the players all lived up to their promise, giving each match their all, and forming friendships in the process. Wednesday saw the teams complete the first 3 rounds, competing in everything from Debating and Theatre Sports to Football and Touch. Over 250 players spent the day here at Oxford, and when the final round of the day finished at 6:30, all the teams ate dinner out on the courts, under the combined light of the floodlights and the moon. The following day the schools took part in just 2 rounds, finishing the day at 3:00 and giving everyone the time to prepare for the evening social! Thursday was also the day of many out of school challenges, including the Dragon Boating, which was one of the most highly anticipated matches of the competition. Dragon Boating is something that’s really special for the senior students at Oxford, so including it in CASAfest was really exciting! All of the teams gave the races their absolute best, and Rangiora New Life impressed, taking out the 250m race. Oxford followed closely in second, climbing back into first place in the 500m turns race!
Following the day’s competition, the players returned to school at 7:00 that night, ready for the annual CASAfest social. The neon themed dance was certainly a highlight, giving the teams an opportunity to socialise and celebrate away from the sports fields. It was an opportunity for the visiting staff to celebrate as well, and the social really captures the spirit of CASAfest. With Friday being our final day, we’re all sad that CASAfest is coming to an end. After an exciting morning filled with Round 6 challenges, the farewell ceremony began at midday. The Poroporoaki was a really special way to end the competition, and each of the visiting schools had the chance to speak about their experience at CASAfest, before the winner of the fair play trophy was announced! Rangiora New Life were the winners of the fair play award for CASAfest 2021, and as they will be hosting the tournament next year, it was really nice to see such a display of sportsmanship. Oxford’s head students passed over the
www.facebook.com/oxfordarea
CASAfest flag to Rangiora’s student leaders, and with that the farewell was over, and all 5 visiting schools got back on the road, heading back towards home in time for the holidays. CASAfest has been a huge event, and running the competition has taken a huge amount of effort. Thank you so much to all of the Oxford staff who put in so much work behind the scenes, to the teachers who became team managers, who organised the social, who managed all the student volunteers. Mrs Inch and Mrs Baggot were the chief organisers of the tournament, so thank you for all the work you put in not only during CASAfest, but in the months before as well. And thank you to all the students who volunteered over the three days, and to those families who took on billets from the visiting schools. We couldn’t have hosted CASAfest without everyone who helped out, and we really appreciate all the players and staff from our visiting schools, who came here to Oxford to make this happen! CASAfest 2021 has been an amazing experience, and already we’re looking forward to next year's tournament!
Wearable Arts We are excited to announce we are back for this year. Information and Entry Forms now available for this year's show. North Canterbury Wearable Arts (previously Oxford's Wearable Arts) is organised and brought to you by the Oxford Area School PTA as a fundraiser for the school. But, more importantly, it is a community/ district event which gives an opportunity for the creativity of our students and adults to showcase their work in a "show" atmosphere with live music, judges, compere and prizes. For students especially, it is a huge opportunity and wonderful experience to be able to research, design and create a garment and then model it on a stage in front of an audience. This year we will have the one evening show in the Rangiora Town Hall on Saturday 4th September - 6.30 pm Please encourage anyone you know who has a creative bent to contact us for more information and an Entry Form. The Oxford Family Run Butcher words & photos by Candice Breeze
Everyone knows and loves the Oxford Butcher. Writer Candice went behind the scenes to find out more about the family run business from Shane Frahm
Tell me a little about the history of this place. My great uncle Neil bought this shop in 1957 off a guy named Charlie Brown. The shop was actually directly across the road from where we are right now. It took him a year or so to get the courage to borrow money to buy the shop. In September 1973 the shop we are in now was built, I can remember coming into the shop with my dad as a kid. Uncle Neil then went into partnership with his son Gavin in 1969. In 1980 I started as an apprentice butcher. I even won apprentice of the year in 1983. That was roughly the same year we extended the shop. In 1988 Uncle Neil wanted out due to ill health, so myself and my dad Bevin, bought the shop. Bevin retired in his 60s and that’s when I took over full time. To be honest we’ve just carried on since then.
Did you always want to become a butcher? I was always pretty keen to be a butcher. I worked in the shop after school and in the holidays. I have a daughter who works with me in the shop. My son has done his time in the shop too but has been off driving tractors. He says he will come back, but I’m not sure if he will.
What’s changed in butchery over the years? Back in the day Gavin and Neil had an Abattoir (slaughter house) up the road for home kill. That eventually got shut down and we began the service of just going onto farms and doing the killings. It’s something we still do to this day, and is a big part of what we do. There’s obviously been a lot of changes in machinery over the years too. You use to be able to sell sheep skin and beef hide, which you could use to make leather and shoes, but now it’s worthless and gets chucked away, which is sad.
What’s something you love about your job? We meet a lot of interesting people, whether it’s people coming into the shop, from locals to out of towners, or driving out to do home kills. We go all over the South Island, so it’s fun to drive down roads you normally wouldn’t, seeing scenery and getting to know various people.
How is your shop different? We make all our sausages with natural casings and do a lot of things still the old way and by hand. We still do from scratch to finished product, and that’s our biggest point of difference to supermarkets and big butchers. They don’t bone out from the carcass like we do. We also naturally cold smoke our meat in-house which is one of our specialties, and all of our meat comes from farms in Canterbury.

May Ashley Gorge Reserve Track The track committee have been working very hard over the past five years to develop tracks suitable for walkers to enjoy. Stage 1. Loop Track is a 1 hour walk, Stage 2: Waterfall Track is a 2 hour walk and the Stage 3: brings you to a 5/6 hour easy/moderate tramp on unformed but safe track, with some steep pinches and no flood-prone watercourses and the view from the top provides a 360 degrees view from Pegasus Bay, Christchurch/Port Hills/Canterbury Bight/Canterbury Plains/Ashley Gorge to the densely forested Canary Stream and Puketeraki Range beyond. To help design and build these tracks are a group of very dedicated people of young and older members with volunteer hours around 5000 given. Youth involvement Oxford Area School students, Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery School, Rolleston Scout Group and Rangiora Squadron 88 Air Cadets and John Burton, would like to acknowledge 3 students Emma Warwick, Bailey Baker and Keegan Bremner, who have been very involved in the track formation on a weekly basis for quite some time. DOC have now installed a track counter and gave the walker numbers on the Loop and Waterfall Tracks from Nov 2020 – Mar 2021 (113) days with a total of 5827 walkers. If you would like to help this committee on a voluntary basis to keep up the maintenance and help to have this area predator free, please contact johndenise. burton159@gmail.com How about packing up the family and having an adventure walk on these tracks and enjoy looking at the native bush? It seems lately that life is returning to it’s simple normality after a year of unknown and uncertainty. After waking up each morning and looking at “Stuff” or, waiting for the early morning news or, eagerly anticipating the 1.00 pm updates or, the special announcement by the Prime Minister, life now seems a bit ordinary! Just about the only thing we can’t do is travel beyond our shores, but it looks like even that will return at least a little back to normal. Boring!! If it wasn’t Covid with it’s levels of lockdown continuously changing, then it was Donald Trump and the US elections. And if it wasn’t Trump and the feeling of “what’s he said now!!”, then it was our own political scene. For all intents and purposes all that has pretty much gone. “Stuff” is boring and has lost it’s eagerly awaited morning read. One thing we have learned and are still realising, is how matters and circumstances outside of our borders have strongly influenced our lives. Whether it be lockdown level because of what’s happened in Auckland or whether we have to wait for months for delivery of goods and supplies due to what’s happening overseas. We’re fine! Why do we have to suffer because of others? I guess it’s something we just have to accept and carry on. I said this before and I’ll say it again, let’s just worry about the things we can control and not things we can’t. One of the questions I’ve had recently more and more from clients is the increase in insurance premiums. This is also partly influenced by what’s happening overseas. Most of our insurances policies, all insurances including house and contents, are reinsured overseas. This means that in some cases up to 90% of insurances are covered by overseas based reinsurance companies. Because of that they set the rules, including what they charge our insurance companies for the benefit of having their claims paid. This in turn is influenced by what’s happening on an international bases. It’s determined by levels of claims worldwide. The insurance that has seen the most increase in premiums is Private Medical Cover. This is a more local issue in that only a small part of Medical is reinsured. For the most part medical claims are covered by each insurance provider themselves. That has been influenced by a combination of increased medical costs and an increase in claims. The more people have medical cover the more claims are made. The more claims are made the more medical providers and resources are needed. That again has an influence on costs. The second type of cover that has seen increases in premium has been disability cover such as Income Protection and Trauma claims. Again, more people have this cover, so, more claims. More claims, more costs. This is, to a degree, dependant on overseas trends, particularly for the larger and long term claims. If you’re finding premiums are getting out of control, then there are things we can do about that. There are options rather than just cancelling altogether. Sometimes it’s better to have something in place rather than nothing at all. All personal risk insurances i.e. Life, Health and Disability insurance, go up with age. But with age often comes change in circumstances and as such needs for insurances change. We can help with that. We can guide you through what’s a “nice to have” as opposed to what’s a “need to have”. If this is you, then give us a call…After all, it is what we do… creating certainty.

Oxford provided a great day out for town and country at last month’s A&P Show. With the wet weather the day before and a long weekend ahead, my wife and I, like many parents, were grateful for an opportunity to take the family out, with Oxford turning on the beautiful April sun for the day. This year saw history in the making with Show president Marie FitzPatrick possibly being one of the youngest Show presidents to step into the role. Besides putting on a very successful Show, with record numbers through the gates, Marie also runs an Angus stud and has just had a baby. Well done on some expert juggling, Marie! Our rural fire stations play a valuable role in our communities and it was a great honour to officially open and speak at the Swannanoa Temporary Fire Station. We are lucky to have such hard-working volunteer firemen and women, who commit hours of voluntary service in keeping our community safe. Not only are our volunteer fire brigades the first point of call for protecting lives and property from fire but in our rural communities they can also be the first people responding to medical emergencies and motor vehicle accidents. Being able to formally acknowledge their commitment, and that of their families, at the opening was a privilege. Bringing National’s Forestry Spokesperson Ian McKelvie to Oxford recently to visit Bennetts Sawmill was a valuable opportunity to chat to our local sawmillers to check in with them on how we can support them. I was very impressed with the business model that has seen this family business thrive for over 50 years through providing a valuable service to our local market. Ensuring Waimakariri has good health services is important to me and I recently met with the Canterbury District Health Board’s new CE to discuss a range of issues for our residents. This is part of a regular catch up I have been having with our DHB to advocate for our residents and our health needs. Authorised by Matt Doocey, Level 1, 188 High Street, Rangiora.

Brian Thompson Brian is born and bred in Oxford, went to Rangiora High School, and his brother is the third generation on their family farm. Being the youngest in his family, he missed out on being on the farm, and instead went into the world of mechanics, doing his apprenticeship at Oxford Transport. Dedicating his life to being a firefighter, Brian has been in the brigade for over 50 years, joining at 18 years old when his father-in-law recruited him to join in 1969. The best thing about being in the brigade is “serving the community” says Brian, as he reminisces about his time in the field. “We used to just do fires, but now we are first responders. We get calls for accidents, medical, setting up landing pads for rescue helicopters, scrub fires, garden drum fires, constructions sites, sheds, houses and haybarns are all part of the job,” he says. “The equipment is a lot more advanced now too, branches are more effective to spread out water efficiently. We don’t use as much water as we used to.” Another thing Brian loves about the job is going out to the schools. He talks about a recent trip to View Hill School where they used a smoke machine and put it in a room to show how to get down and out with a demonstration, so they can see how smoke works.
Sally Audsley Originating from the United Kingdom, Sally has lived in Coopers Creek since 1997, and has been in the Oxford brigade for 13 years, previously being in Search and Rescue. The Brigade is very much like an extended family. All there for each other if and when needed. Sally says “There is always great banter during our weekly practice, and again continues with our social gatherings. Once a month we have a BBQ for members and their families to catch up. There is also a keen golfing group, which attends tournaments against other brigades as far afield as Invercargill. Rifle shooting competitions and the odd fishing trip.” Sally's role within the Fire Brigade is as an Operational Support person. This still allows Sally to attend call outs, but wearing a different uniform so others know what her role is. She has been the Treasurer for a number of years now, and being involved in the Brigade is a great way for her to put something back into the community. Similar to Brian, Sally also enjoys going out to the schools doing demonstrations. They simulate a car crash with old cars that they take out to schools. “It’s fun to see the kids get involved and a picture of what really goes on.” Female firefighter numbers have slowly been increasing over the years, with most brigades having one to two female firefighters in their brigade. However Sally would love to see more female firefighters joining the brigade. “I’d love to see another female here at Oxford!” On Saturday 22 May, Oxford Fire Station has four of its volunteer firefighters doing the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge to raise money for Leukaemia. They will be wearing 25kg of gear while walking up 51 flights of stairs. Good luck team!
Water Reform on the Central Government Agenda You may have read about the Government’s proposed Three Waters Reform. When we talk of ‘Three Waters’ this means drinking water, sewer and storm water. Central Government is looking to remove these functions from Councils with the argument that there is a problem where some Councils have under-invested in Three Waters infrastructure over many years. While that might be the case for some Councils, this is not true for all and certainly not here in Waimakariri. Waimakariri residents can have faith in the quality of water services we provide. The Council is particularly proud of the investment undertaken over a number of years to get our infrastructure upgraded, compliant and that the water is sourced from deep and secure aquifers. Thirteen of the fourteen schemes administered by this Council are fully compliant with the New Zealand Drinking Water Standards, and the fourteenth is currently being upgraded to be fully compliant by June 2021. The delay on this last scheme - a small rural supply in Poyntz Road - has been caused by ensuring we adequately consult our community so that the solution has buy-in. All this has come at a cost to our community - over $100m over 20 years - and while it hasn’t been easy to have these conversations (because these projects are funded by rates), the result is infrastructure that’s reliable and is a core part of ensuring we have a healthy community. We know the condition of our supplies better than anyone and have a 150-year asset management strategy to manage them for our community. When I spoke at Parliament’s Health Select Committee I raised these points, and reiterated them recently at a Government forum on Three Waters Reform. However our Council, and most Councils I am in regular contact with, are extremely concerned about the proposed timetable being considered for Three Waters reform. We are being told that we will need to consult our communities in the latter part of this year … the worst time to consult, coming in to Christmas. The current timetable allows insufficient time to properly consider the reforms, mainly because we are unclear on most of the detail. At the moment we don’t know what structures would be established to manage our water services, how they would be funded, what compensation the Council would receive for our Three Waters assets, the impact this would have on ratepayers, and the input that community voice has to shape this direction. As you can see, there’s a lot we don’t know. We are being asked to consult with you, our community, before we have all the information required to make an informed decision. Unfortunately the concerns of our sector appear to be falling on deaf ears of both the Minister of Local Government and the Department of Internal Affairs. I don’t understand the urgency. It is only fair we are equipped with all the information, have adequate time to consider this, and properly consult our community. The process needs to be slowed right down. At this stage our Council will maintain an open mind on the reform process but before we come to any decision we need answers to a lot of questions and time to hear our community’s opinion on the proposal. Until this information is provided, and there is a much higher level of transparency, it is difficult to see how the Government’s proposed reform is right for our Council and community. Oxford A&P Show I enjoyed attending the Oxford A&P Show on Easter Saturday – a great day out where town and country come together. Lovely weather, and a credit to the hard work of Show President Marie FitzPatrick supported by Vice Presidents Letitia Schroeder and Steve Macauley, and the amazing Christine Roberts and Show Committee.

Getting to Queenstown is a long drive when you live in Oxford. In fact when you drive over the Crown Range and stop for coffee along the way, it takes about 8 hours. But it’s well worth the trip, and a group of Oxford students have recently made their way down to Otago for a visit. The senior Geography, History, and ABM classes spent 4 days away from the classroom, and in Queenstown this March, and we absolutely loved it. The week long field trip had been months in the making, and we managed to fit a vacation worthy itinerary into the span of two days. Both Monday and Thursday were spent driving, all the way down to the bottom of the South Island, and then all the way back again. So Tuesday and Wednesday were action packed! And while the trip gave us all the opportunity to work towards assessments, school work was far from the only thing that kept us busy. Tuesday was earmarked for exploring Queenstown’s international tourism industry, and it’s clear to see why the town is a global destination. For those of us brave enough to try, although I’m afraid I couldn’t count myself among the number, bungee jumping was on the program. Even when you’re like me, and perfectly content watching from the sidelines, the fall looked nothing but terrifying. But the bucket list activity was a huge highlight for those thrill seekers who gave it a go, as was the Shotover Jet, which received rave reviews despite the screaming that accompanied every turn. We had the chance to try out luging as well, which thankfully was slightly more sedate, and the view from the top is well worth the gondola ride up. New Zealand is a beautiful country, and Queenstown was no exception. The Geography class set about mapping the stunning view, and the following day put their sketches to good use, as all of us focused on collecting data for our assessments. The trip was a unique opportunity for us, and the senior History class had the chance to gather sources from the archives of the Arrowtown Museum, while ABM and Geography spent hours gathering data from transits in Queenstown. This term the History class is focusing on the Otago Gold Rush, and we had already started our research into the historic event, in preparation for our visit to the former gold mining capital. But being able to gather so many primary sources from the museum was unparalleled to any websites we might have found, and the day in Arrowtown was really special. Geography and ABM followed us to the landmark town in the afternoon, and we had the chance

Are you ready for winter?
Sunday 2nd May - Communion Service.
With autumn upon us it means winter is fast approaching - shorter days, cold weather and unfortunately, the cold and flu season.
16th May – Service. Salvation Army Service at 6.00pm
A healthy immune system is the best defence against cough, cold and flu. So get yourself and your family prepared before the cold weather hits. Have your flu immunisation. This may be fully funded at your doctors so give them a call. Flu symptoms are severe and are not to be confused with cold symptoms. With the flu you often don’t have the energy to get out of bed. If you feel your immune system needs more of a 'boost', we are here to help with products formulated to support the body's immune response. Buccaline tablets can also be used to boost your body's natural immunity for up to three months and provide some protection against the bacterial complications of the flu or a cold. Buccaline is NOT a substitute for the flu vaccine, but may be used as well as a flu vaccination.

Police report with Oxford Constable
Mitch Alatalo Hi everyone, I hope you are all keeping well. Autumn is upon us, although I do wish we had a little more rain. Even though the nights are getting colder, and we have had the odd morning and evening of thick fog. Can we please watch our speed, travelling distances and turn on your lights. It makes a world of difference in the fog. Still on road policing; pedestrian crossings. We have a great wee town and yes there is lots of traffic travelling through, but just as many locals as well. I have seen people waiting at the pedestrian crossings for vehicles to slow and even stop. This at times can take some time. It is everyone’s responsibility to make sure it is safe to cross. I know that school will be back by the time this article is printed, but can everyone make sure they have a chat with their children about crossing the roads. It is a dangerous place. In saying that, motorists need to drive to the conditions as well. There are three sets of pedestrian crossings, two in quick succession so please drive to the conditions. I am hearing by all accounts it has been a great roar, with plenty of animals for those who have done the hard yards to get to where they need to get to. I am also getting a lot of reports of people not being where they are supposed to be either. The onus is on the hunter to know where they are hunting, and the path they take to get to where they are hunting. If you are found hunting on private property there are consequences; one being loss of a firearms licence, I have said this to many a person, a firearm licences is a privilege not a right, so treat it as such.

Fire Emergency report with Oxford Chief Fire Officer

The Cust/Oxford St John have attended 126 jobs in total to date this year and 24 jobs for April, Jobs have ranged from more MVA, falls and trauma. Winter months are nearly here. Keep yourself healthy by eating well, exercising regularly, and drinking plenty of water, and see your GP if you are unwell. It is a good time to become a member of the St John supporters scheme. Although the money and donations now go into the national body please be assured Cust/Oxford St John is well supported with uniforms and the general running of our ambulance and our station from these funds. Thank you for visiting our stand at the Oxford show. We had success in attracting several new recruits but the more the merrier. If you are interested there is one final chance to join up this year so please phone the station on 033123516 or email your details to mel.brooker@stjohn.org.nz It was lovely to see so many turn out to the ANZAC remembrance today. It is always a privilege to be able to wear the green uniform and march as part of the parade.
The Brigade was called five times in March. Two calls were to assist the Cust Brigade, one to a structure fire and one to an un-permitted rubbish fire late in the evening. The calls in our area were to a car fire which was totally destroyed, one call to investigate smoke in the Burnt Hill area, which was found to be smoke coming from a crop residue burn in the Sheffield area and one to set up a landing zone for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. This brings our total calls for the year to eleven. This months message is; Don’t encourage a child’s fascination with fire. Keep matches and lighters well out of reach.
The Oxford station is not manned 24 hours a day - if you require emergency assistance please call 111
Last but not least, there have been lots of reports of suspicious vehicles driving about and looking up drive ways. If you see anything suspicious, please report it and let your neighbours know as well.
