NOVEMBER

2021

It is hard to believe we are producing our November Observer, and already making plans for our Christmas issue. The Oxford Community Trust is gearing up for their Christmas Wonderland again this year, and are looking for businesses and individuals to come on board to make this event a success again. Last year it was a fantastic event, and with the year the way it has been, it will be lovely to have something for the community to celebrate the season. More info about this event is on page 10. The theme for the Oxford & Districts Lions Christmas Parade is Vintage - check out their ad on page 18. While we have been putting together this issue together, we have been reflecting on everything there is on offer in Oxford, with sporting activities, the community garden, Keep Oxford Beautiful, Oxford Women's Forum, classes at the Art Gallery. These just scratch the surface of what is a vibrant community with opportunities for volunteering, sports, creative classes and service opportunities. We love being able to showcase these organisations, to show what people are able to get involved in. If you would like us to do an article about your group or organisation, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us at info@oxfordobserver.co.nz. We hope you enjoy this issue. Stay safe out there!

Lip servic e When you think about lip fillers, do you visualize exaggerated fat lips from over-zealous dermal filler injections? You may be surprised to learn that botulinum toxin (commonly referred to as Botox®) can be used instead of dermal fillers to enhance beautiful, natural fullness to your top lip in a much more subtle way. It’s called the ‘Lip Flip’! We asked Doctor Laurie to tell us more about the ‘Lip Flip’ technique. What is a Lip Flip? The Lip Flip creates the appearance of a fuller, rounder lip by giving the upper lip a poutier shape and adding definition to the upper lip line (a.k.a. the vermillion border). This means the lip shows a subtle, relaxed fullness, especially when you smile, without adding volume or changing the natural shape of your lips. I make very small injections that temporarily relax the muscles around your top lip. This causes the part of your upper lip that's inside your mouth to ‘flip’ upward and outward, giving your lip a fuller appearance. How can I stop my top lip disappearing as I get older? A Lip Flip is an ideal treatment for clients that wish to regain more visual profile and impact of their top lip. As the muscles around your mouth relax from the Lip Flip treatment, your top lip gently 'rolls out', creating the illusion of more volume. This also helps stop your top lip moving up too far when you smile. Does Lip Flip help reduce ‘smokers’ lines? A Lip Flip is an excellent first step to regaining the lips you used to have (or want to have). However, the Lip Flip will not reduce extensive or deep ‘smokers’ lines and these will require dermal fillers to treat them. Who is a good candidate for a Lip Flip? The Lip Flip procedure is ideal for anyone with a thinning upper lip who is interested in a fuller, more natural looking lip. How long does a Lip Flip last? In general, the effects of a Lip Flip will last for at least two months. Is a Lip Flip better than filler? The Lip Flip amplifies the natural shape of your lips, without exaggerating, for an all-natural effect and it’s much more affordable option than lip filler, costing only $150. Is a Lip Flip noticeable? This is a subtle enhancement and typically clients start to see a difference after one week, with results in full effect after 2-3 weeks. You should notice a slight increase in the area requiring lipstick. Do lip injections hurt during the procedure? Typically, lip injections are quickly done by an experienced doctor practitioner. Some patients feel minor discomfort and or a slight pinch, but pain is usually brief and manageable. Everyone's body is different, of course, and some people may experience more pain than others. Interested in a Lip Flip? Want to discuss some possible treatments for some aspect of your look? Doctor Laurie is currently offering complimentary, private consultations, usually valued at $120. Appointments* can be booked online at www.canterburyclinic.nz or call us on 03-9258875.

Main divid e hair loung e review by Candice Breeze

I’m usually one to go to the hairdresser’s fairly frequently. However that all changed after the first nationwide lockdown in 2020. I had recently gotten married and had beautiful long brown hair with ashy blonde highlights. My hair had never been in better condition and it was my favourite colour my hair had ever been. So one day during lockdown I had been binge watching Sabrina on Netflix, and decided I wanted ice blonde locks just like hers. I mean how hard could it be? I had watched so many YouTube tutorials on how to bleach your hair, I was practically a pro! I searched the web for salon grade bleach, got out my credit card and awaited the arrival of the goods. Once they arrived I waited like any sensible person, until I was mid mental breakdown to then get out the bleach and attack my hair with it. Somehow all the knowledge I had learnt about hair bleaching went out the window and I proceeded to attempt to lather a fat dallop of bleach into my hair. I covered my entire hair and let it sit for 40 minutes, covering it in glad wrap, as I heard that was a good technique. Ready to see my hair transformation, I eagerly got in the shower and started rinsing away. However, I noticed clumps of my golden locks falling off, and the bottom of my bathtub looked like the floor of a barber’s shop. I had sizzled my hair. Not only that, I had damaged it so badly, I couldn’t even dry it. So after a haircut that went up to my ears, I began the process of growing my hair out and giving it a break. Fast forward 1.5 years and I still hadn’t been to the hairdressers but was ready to have a proper transformation. This time, a bit more subtle. I had already had a brown to blonde balayage thanks to my regrowth, and wanted to keep the regrowth I do have as I am on a journey to see what my natural hair colour even is. I had a consultation with Amie at Main Divide Hair Lounge, who suggested a rose gold toner in my blonde ends for the rosy look I was after. I arrived on Wednesday morning, greeted by stylist Larnii who motioned me to my chair and we discussed what colour I would go. She bought out some handy colour charts to help me pick the best shade of rose gold I wanted and then mixed up the golden formula. The process was smooth and quick, and Larnii was more than happy to have a quick chat then let me finish reading my book that I was engrossed in. After my processing time was up, we headed to the glorious basin to wash off the colour and begin the shampoo and conditioner portion of the service; my favourite part. Between you and me, Larnii gives the longest, most incredible head massage. I highly recommend.it. (At one point I nearly felt like dozing off). We then head back over to start blow drying my hair and doing the cut. I opted for some choppy layers with a pair of curtain bangs. Larnii did the most incredible job with the haircut and I am someone who is incredibly fussy, and until this day had not had a single stylist cut my hair the way I wanted. (Thanks Larnii!) Before I knew it I was sporting a new brown to rose gold balayage and feeling fabulous. The team at Main Divide made the whole process so easy. So if you are like me and overdue to get your hair done, go treat yourself and book in with the team at Main Divide, I promise you they won’t disappoint.

M eet the new owners of Fresh Choice Oxford by Candice Breeze

If you have ever stopped in at Supervalue Mandeville, you may be familiar with the faces of Kelly and Bevan, the new owners of Fresh Choice Oxford, who currently also own the Mandeville store. Having worked closely with Mike they already knew how amazing the Oxford community and the team and Fresh Choice Oxford were. “We saw it as an opportunity to combine the two teams so those who wanted could have some variety and work across both stores,” says Kelly Hames. Kelly, and her husband Bevan Hames have been married for 10 years and have two beautiful but cheeky girls Maddison, 8 and Milla, 6. When Kelly isn’t spending time with her family she likes to exercise, whether it’s running or cycling and loves a good glass of wine at the end of the day! Kelly was born and raised in Dunedin. She trained as a nurse and worked in the Intensive Care unit in Melbourne and Sydney. Eventually night shifts took its toll on her and she shifted to medical sales in Sydney. A career opportunity presented itself, so with a desire to come back home and expand their family, Bevan and Kelly made the move back to New Zealand, settling down in Mandeville. They embarked on the development of the Mandeville Village, which is how they ended up being the owners of Mandeville Supervalue. “Having owned and operated Supervalue for almost four years there’s certainly been some blood, sweat and tears poured into that business. Like any new business owner. I’ve had a lot of learnings!” “But most of all I love people and I love a sense of community and giving back. I have an absolutely amazing team of people around me every day, and we have a community that support local and in return we are able to provide that support back. It’s a full circle and I feel privileged to be a part of it,” says Kelly. Get ready for some big changes happening to Fresh Choice Oxford over the next month or so. They have a new chiller for the dairy section going in, and aim to start doing their own sliced meat and potted salads, and extending their range with some new exciting suppliers.

There will also be a new hot food case, and food-to-go chiller being installed at the front end of the store to help those who are looking for quick ‘grab and go’ lunch items. “The biggest change of all is the flow of the aisles. We need to move things around to try and make room to extend our grocery range, which is going to be a massive job,” says Kelly. To leave you on a funny note, Kelly says she is learning how to back a trailer for the first time so “apologies in advance if you see me struggling in the carpark or one of my team in the entrance way controlling traffic for me while I try back it into place!”

p et food - isn’t it all the same stuff ? by Tracy Ashley

The Short answer is ….No ! Dogs & Cats are our best friends. They quickly become our fur-family and these days we fork out quite a bit of coin for the privilege. They benefit our lives in immeasurable ways and taking care of them is important. We all know that “we are what we eat” and diet is the biggest influence on their health, just as it is on ours. So, while the topic of nutrition is a deep one, here are just a few surface points to look for to help you choose the diet that’s right your pet. Because dry food is a large portion of petfood fed today, I will just concentrate on this for now. Pet Food is basically broken down into groups of quality. Budget, Premium and Super Premium. While some of you may have heard of AAFCO standards, there are really no regulations in what determines the differences in these groupings. AAFCO standards are set pretty low & wide. Small scale manufacturers might not afford the cost to apply, or are not exporting to the USA & don’t require it. So what are the main differences? Firstly price does not always reflect quality & listed protein levels , fats etc do not always either. It is best to look at the ingredients. BUDGET F OODS To keep manufacturing costs down, highly processed and low cost ingredients are selected. The more expensive ingredients are minimised & low cost ingredients are maximised. Artificial colouring is often added & synthetic preservatives are used to lengthen the shelf life. This does not bode well for your pet’s digestive system as those low cost ingredients are often grains or potato which are moisture absorbing, which can cause bloating, inflammation, digestive blockages & allergies. The meat content is usually low quality bi-products, unspecified meat meal or some imported products are produced using rendered meats. The protein portion may even have meat bone meal added. Feed rates will be higher due to the limited nutrient uptake. PREMI UM F OOD S This can be a bit of a loose area, but in premium there will usually be no animal bi-products, meat bone meal and ultimately better in terms of quality ingredients. You should expect to find a specified Meat Meal eg: Poultry Meal & sometime more exotic meats within the first few ingredients. The quality of the grains are improved by eliminating wheat & barley but you may still find corn/maize, soy and potato included. Some entry level grain- free petfoods start in this group often using potato and peas. We may start to see fruits, vegetables or berries added to improve fibre & health benefits. They tend not to use artificial colours. When feeding these foods you should see improvement in skin & coat, digestion, energy, strong bones, muscle development and overall improvement in wellbeing. Feed rates will be lower than budget foods due to the increase in the uptake of nutrients and you should see less poo on the lawn. SUPER P R E M I U M F OODS Over the last 10 years we have started to see this next group of foods on NZ pet store shelves. Often made using more exotic meat protein sources, these are often used to assist with allergies or other health disorders. You should expect to find specified meat meals eg: Chicken meal rather than a generalised poultry meal on label listings. The selected meat products are across the whole of the first few ingredients. The quality of the meal may be human grade, free range farmed or grass fed for example. You may find formulations containing multiple meat proteins such as Chicken Duck and Turkey. You will find Grains, including rice, are excluded and potato is limited or excluded. In their place are higher quality legumes, fruits and vegetables to improve digestion & well-being and spices & herbs to assist in inflammation & support the immune system. They tend not to use synthetic preservatives, artificial colours and flavours. When feeding these foods you should see even more improvement in skin & coat, digestion, muscle development, immune health, energy & overall wellbeing. Feed rates tend to be lower than both budget & most premium foods, due to being even more nutrient rich. In a lot of cases they are a whopping 90% digestable, meaning that they are getting more from their food & there is less waste being produced on the lawn. So, weighing it up? Premium & super premium foods do generally cost a bit more than budget foods, although it is worth doing the math on cost vs old & new feed rates, as sometimes they work out to be similiar. Either way you will know that your pet is being fed better, and you will be providing the greatest chance of your loyal friend living a healthier longer life with less vet bills. g et ready for party season ... ‘Tis the season to have parties, events and be merry! Being in the southern hemisphere means we combine summer events with Christmas events. There is nothing like a special occasion to add extra pressure onto ‘what to wear!’ How on earth do you narrow down the jungle of choices and protocol of what is appropriate to what particular event? Many a frazzled message has been sent my way with a slightly harassed person at the end of it. But never fear….. Kerri is here and I have a step by step solution, that I run through my own head when having to pull an outfit together. The first thing is always give yourself plenty of time. Don’t leave it to the last minute. Half the joy is knowing you have an outfit already sorted, when looking forward to social situations. That feeling of having an outfit that you are excited to wear, should be bottled up and sold. I would buy it! Ok you have time, so now work out what the dress code is. Let’s take a wedding for an example. Is it formal or casual? Where is the venue? Church, garden, beach, backyard? Small or big? Simple or extravagant? Understand the vibe. Once you have this understanding then you can start heading in the right direction. The second thing is my favourite. It’s time to get your creative juices on. Come up with five top looks that you love and meet the brief. Search pinterest, fashion mags, people walking down the street, internet, shops. Make a mental or physical mood board of five looks that you love. Be open to changing it up if you need to, but this will help you begin with a direction. Even though you are hitting the brief, don't forget to make sure you take in your personality. You want to reflect who you are, and you will be your most confident self when you are. Third thing, don't skimp on the basics. Good underwear and accessories are essential. Many many times a look has been pulled off with the most simple dress but killer accessories and shoes. What goes on underneath is sometimes more important that what goes on top. Number four. Make up and hair. Don't forget about these. When creating your top 5 looks, make sure you take these two things into consideration as well. Having a bit of a plan can make shopping for outfits so much more fun. It’s when we have no idea what we are looking for, that it becomes overwhelming. Really put the effort into step number two, so you can gain your direction. Lastly, beg, borrow and steal. We don't have to own everything and if we can use our girl or boy people to help us out, then we are totally winning. Your wardrobe triples in options when we share and lend. When I have an event that I feel like I’m on show, having a piece lent to me by someone I love, is like a little reminder through the evening that I am loved. It’s a perfect addition to the feeling for a perfect outfit. This is my little recipe that I follow and share with my clients often, when they have events to plan for. Hopefully this helps you guys for the fun season ahead. Happy outfit wearing!!

500g Fresh Asparagus 200g Halloumi 100g Baby Kale/baby Spinach 2 Medium Beetroot 2 Red Onion 1 Red Pepper 100g Almonds Whole or Flaked 50g Toasted Seeds (Pumpkin/Sunflower/Sesame) Extra Virgin Olive Oil 2 Cloves Garlic ¼ cup Chopped Parsley/Mint DRESSING ¼ cup Tahini 3 Tabs Water 2 Tabs Cider Vinegar 2 Tabs Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 teasp Sesame Oil 1 Tabs Honey 1 Clove Garlic Crushed ¼ tsp Salt

Asparagus is so delicious when grilled on the BBQ, same with Halloumi. So either do this on the BBQ or in a hot oven (210 degrees celsius) Wash and chop the beetroot, toss in olive oil with the chopped garlic cloves and salt and pepper. Pour onto a baking tray and roast in the oven till soft. Do the same with the red onion & Red Pepper. (I like to cut my onion into wedges) Roast till the edges start to brown. Snap the stalks off the Asparagus and toss in Olive Oil Salt and pepper and spread on the BBQ turning once the spears start to blacken and blister. Cut the Halloumi into ½ cm thick strips and place on hot bbq grills. Turn when they start to bubble and brown. Put to one side whilst building the salad. Toast Almonds in a pan over hot heat moving them all the time for about 3 mins. Remove from hot pan on to a plate to cool. Whisk all the Dressing ingredients together and put into a jug to serve. Place the Baby kale, Roast Beetroot, Red Onion and Red Pepper into a bowl. Toss it all together well so all the oil mixes into the leaves, mix in 2 table spoons of dressing. Mix well. Place on to a serving platter. Arrange the Asparagus on top then cut the Halloumi into bite size chucks and Sprinkle on top of Asparagus. Roughly chop the toasted almonds, mix with toasted seeds and chopped parsley and mint then sprinkle all over the salad. Serve with Dressing on the side. This Salad would be perfect with BBQ Lamb or even Salmon.

Enjoy.

community gard en looking for enthusiastic help ers . by Beka Hunt

Our Oxford community garden is flourishing, with only a handful of our community remaining involved. Established in 2015, Lee Leonard took the lead in the garden's care when the original organisers became too busy to continue.. Since then, Lee has been organising every aspect of the garden, securing donations and grants. An extension of the Oxford Men’s Shed, the garden has since been kept tidy byLee and her fellow gardener Ted Dring. “It would be nice to have a few regulars,” Ted admitted, adding “maybe some newer, younger people, anyone wanting to learn really”. Every Thursday, 10am to 12pm, Lee and Ted are in the garden weeding and planting. Though there is only so much that can be planted before the raised beds are full with growth. All the produce in the garden is practically organic, as it is never sprayed. Unfortunately, there is a real problem with vandalism, meaning many plants don’t make it to fruition. In spite of this, Lee and Ted remain optimistic. Lee, who absolutely adores gardening said, “there’s a lot of satisfaction in seeing something grow. I don’t think a lot of young people really know where their food comes from, I would love to show them.” She has been growing new seedlings in her house after their original location (her greenhouse) was destroyed by the high wind. The greenhouse struts are now supports for young saplings. She can't keep the whole garden up without some help. With the school holidays drawing near, there is a perfect opportunity to show family the planting basics with a picnic lunch to top it off. There’s a handy table just for this reason. Lee and Ted would be pleased to show you around, and you may just fall in love with watching your work grow.

If you have any questions, you can reach Lee at 03 3121536 and leevelia99@gmail.com or just swing by the garden on Thursday morning, as visitors are always welcome.

Mikes Principal Tumuaki Update The world is changing, workplaces are changing in function and form, the way we now operate in those workplaces is adapting and changing through disruptive technologies, how we communicate is changing and globalisation is here - not to mention the impact COVID-19 is having on the way we do things.

Shave For A Cure Success Thursday, 30 September was when some of our brave students and staff shaved for a cure. So far we have raised over $3700. Six senior students and three staff members shaved this year; Liam Bamford, Shaugn Kilgour, Cole Stagg, Jacob Nish, Straeci Abalos, Alex Eginton-Abbott, Mr Thompson, Mr Kean and Mr Hart.

For a moment consider our Year 1 learners who are 5 years old in 2021. By the time they leave school as an 18-year-old, it will be 2034! Only 4 or so years ago Tiktok was launched and, now sitting at over 2 billion users, has transformed the way a generation communicates and seeks information. I wrote a similar article a number of years back and my example was Facebook. It grew but this next generation outgrew it and needed something different. What will happen in the next 4 years? The reality is we don't know. We don’t know what jobs will look like then and it is very hard to predict the changes we will experience – we are preparing our learners for the unknown, but one thing we do know is that those entering this workforce will need to be adaptable, agile, and able to learn new skills as their environments evolve. We have seen this agility in businesses through the COVID-19 impacts - the innovation, agility and adaptability is something to celebrate - and often when outside of our control. Teachers working in schools know more now about the learning process and how the brain works than a generation ago. We are aware of the attributes that employers are looking for in the workplace and we are adapting our practices to best prepare our students for this. Sitting in rows of silent learners listening to the teacher regurgitate information is the past.

Thank you to our 'hairdressers' Megan, Miss Ramsay, Ms Davis and Mr Mullis. Likewise, thank you to everyone who has got in behind this worthy cause and donated to our team. Shave for a Cure is a New Zealand wide initiative which supports funding for cancer research and brings awareness to patients and their families living with blood cancer. There is still time to donate to the Oxford Area School team through the Shave for a Cure Website, so if you would like to contribute, there is still time before the donation period ends!

Years 9-13 Basketball By Deb Baggot Four teams were entered into the School Sport Canterbury Friday night competition. The teams had three grading games then were put into sections. All of the Oxford Area School teams were in Division 3. The season was due to finish on August 20 but we were suddenly at Level 4 and in lockdown on the week of the finals. After a four week wait, the finals were held on Friday 17 September. Only teams that made the top four were scheduled to play and all four of our teams had made the top four - a great result! Unfortunately the Year 9 boys game was cancelled due to no venue being allocated. They ended their season placing third equal with Lincoln High School. The Senior boys were at home and had a fast and exciting game against Kaiapoi High School. Kaiapoi were the eventual winners taking the game 76-58 with Oxford finishing runner up in Division 3, Section B The Girls team, Oxford Good Company were also at home. They had a convincing win in their final, beating Riccarton 49-29 to take out Division 3, Section B The Intermediate Boys team was away at Riccarton High School for their final. Another great result for Oxford, winning 50-33 and winners of Division 3, Section B All students are to be commended on the way that they played this season, displaying the school values and playing the game with good sportsmanship. Thanks to the following people who assisted with the running of basketball. The time and effort that you have put in is much appreciated. Staff - Mrs Don, Mr Burston and Mr Schasching Students - Ashley, Shaugn, Rico, Ella L, Ollie Parents - Nicky and Quentin Stagg, Hollie Ornsby, Julia Graham, Mark Shelley Thank you for another great season,

The future is a collaborative environment, providing the learner with the choice about where they will work that best matches the learning activity they are carrying out, encouraging higher-order thinking – beyond remembering information to having the learning stick with them (deep learning). This generation of learners needs to be the creators, the collaborators, the critical thinkers. They will enjoy learning and most importantly know how to learn. This future is exciting and it is a great pleasure to be a part of this as an educator, working with learners and the communities we serve. We are growing together. Waiho i te toipoto, kaua i te toiroa - Let us keep close together, not far apart As we navigate changes, things will look different and may challenge what we believe - regardless let’s work through this together, not apart.

NZ Barbarians Area Schools Rugby Tour by Earl Cacho From the 21st to the 25th of September, Earl Cacho attended the NZ Barbarians Area Schools Rugby Camp in Palmerston North. He shares some of the highlights from his trip: The Barbarians Area School Rugby was a great five day experience. On the day I got on the plane, it felt like it was a dream, like I was playing for a professional rugby team. As we arrived at Massey University, we got ourselves ready for our first training. This training was to test our fitness level and see who deserves time on the field by doing a bronco. Bronco is a way to test your fitness level and as an outside back we have a time limit of 5 minutes. When I finished the bronco my time was 5 minutes and 23 seconds. I was so relieved I made it through. The next day, we had breakfast and then suddenly Aaron Smith just came through the door and all the boys were just shocked. We did a Q&A with Aaron Smith for a bit and had a group photo. Later on that day, we had a rugby match with Palmerston North Boys School U16. It was a pretty tight game as we just won by 4 points. After the match the coaches made us do cold and hot water recovery so our body won’t be too sore for the next couple of days. Thursday and Friday were just a light training session as we had a game on the last day versus Hato Pāora College 1st XV. On Thursday morning another special guest came in and it was Nehe Milner-Skudder, 2015 World Rugby breakthrough player and we did a Q&A and another group photo. Friday night came, it was the main highlight - our jersey presentation. When it was time for the presentation a couple of former All Blacks players and managers came in and it was Mike Brewer, Mike Banks and Clive Aitken respectively. Saturday, the final day, our last game. We had physically and mentally prepared ourselves for the game against Hato Pāora College. When we finished warming up and heading back to the shed to put on our jersey, our brotherhood connection over the last 4 days was so strong. As we headed into the match we kept on fighting in the game as it was really close. Seconds left in the game the opponent scored and was up by 1 point. We kicked off again and tried contesting for the ball but we knocked it on as the referee blew the final whistle. It was a tough loss since we only lost by 1 point. But win or lose, once a baabaa always a baabaa. To sum it up, wherever you go don’t be intimidated if you are not selected. It just leads you to keep on training, don’t lose hope and never stop dreaming. Thank you - Earl Cacho

help keep Oxford b eautiful by Candice Breeze

Despite a number of setbacks due to vandalism recently, the team of six volunteers who make up the local community group, Keep Oxford Beautiful, continue their hard work. With a small budget each year, the team work to ensure Oxford does indeed look beautiful. They have done the Police Station Heritage Rose Garden, The Caravan Dump Station down High Street and planting tree bulbs down Main Street. They also do work for the community orchard, and nut trees behind the rocks, fixing up the heritage jail including opening it up in the mornings and shutting it in the evenings. A working bee is planned for the end of October. “We really just want to enhance the local community and would love to see more people come and join us, even if they can only spare an hour,” says Sandra Townsend. The next project they will be working on alongside the Council, is The Oaks Walkway at the end of Weka Street. There’s a path through to the Cemetery and a dog park. There’s a lot of old oak trees and they are hoping to plan bulbs around the walkway. If anyone has any spare bulbs of the following that they could donate towards the cause, drop them off to Sandra Townsend at 5 Weka Street: Snow Drops, Snow Flakes, Daffodils, Blue Bells, Woodland Hyacinths, Grape Hyacinths or any spring bulbs. They also plan on planting rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas, and erica’s in the Oaks Walkway in conjunction with Green Space with the Waimakariri Council.

pottery at the Oxford gall ery by Amy Riach

As the Oxford Pool opens, and that stubborn leafless tree in the corner of the garden finally blossoms, without fail the spring holidays seem to fly by. Now all at once the winter uniforms have been returned to the bottom of the wardrobe, some warmer weather has finally arrived, and the holidays were spent at the river, or the mall, or maybe in bed with Netflix and altogether too much chocolate. But for some students in Oxford, the holidays were spent at the local Art Gallery, wrestling with clay, and eventually turning it into pottery. Under the tutelage of experienced ceramics artist Ruth McLeod, this October the Oxford Art Gallery hosted a holiday ceramics workshop, open to school aged children from year 1-13. The holiday workshops run every term, and include everything from pottery to paper making, with volunteers coming to help out, and make the experience accessible and affordable. These holidays, Ruth was joined by artist June Inch and volunteer Janet Ensor, who are each very familiar with clay based art. Both Ruth and June have their own art displayed in the Gallery, and though they make it look easy, appearances can be deceiving. While molding the clay is highly therapeutic, Ruth likes to say that “clay has a memory”, and it turns out that the way you handle your clay at the very beginning has a huge impact on how the pottery will look at the end. Naturally this led to quite a few do-over’s, as the drying clay seemed to acquire a mind of it’s own! But though the day was certainly not without trial and error, by the end of the course every student went away with a complete candle light holder, or at least they will in about a fortnight, after they have all been kiln fired and glazed. The use of the kiln opens up so many opportunities for clay based art, and in fact the history of ceramics at Arts in Oxford began when the school donated a pottery kiln to the gallery. Ruth and June will be glazing and firing the candle holders, an undertaking just slightly beyond the capabilities of us newbies. But still, we are undeniably learning hugely from the two artists, and Janet says that “This is just amazing, for children to be able to do this with these amazing people who can impart their knowledge”. Project Manager at the Gallery, Lynley McDougall was equally excited about working with Ruth, saying “You can really ask Ruth to create anything. She’s such an amazing artist”. It was definitely a pleasure to be taught by her, so when the next holidays roll around, head on down and check out her work, or maybe enrol in a course yourself!

Oxford women’s forum by Beka Hunt

The Oxford Women's Forum is a chance to network and enjoy the company of friendly community members. Established in 1986, the group is open to anyone - with the exception of males of course. Anyone from the surrounding area is welcome to join the 5 annual meetings, held in the Oxford Working Mens Club. Independent of the council or any other large establishments, the Forum meetings are organised by a committee of 5 members, with Sandra Rountree as President, Julie Boulton as Treasurer and Gillian Rowan as secretary. Interestingly, each member is called and invited personally to every event. This small gesture represents the pure intentions of the group - like-minded women forging genuine friendships. In July, the Forum celebrated their 35th anniversary. The members were presented with a cake and Jill Marshall, one of the original founders, was given the honor of cutting it. Three other members were invited to talk about their time with the Forum, and the cake was later shared with tea and coffee. Still, the night wasn’t complete without their customary meal and guest speaker- all included in the $25 cost. On their Anniversary Dinner, Treacy Landers from Premium Petware took the floor speaking on her area of expertisepet care. The Forum has also heard from the likes of Sara from The Seed Warehouse, Polkadotcom Stylist Kerri Booth and other local speakers. For the upcoming meeting on November the 4th, Sandra has snagged Jo Ealam from the Oxford Community Trust. The Women's Forum love to hear from locals on a wide range of subjects, ranging from a Lawyer's advice to a fashionista's tips- they’re always on the lookout for more speakers. Jo Ealam was asked with Oxford newcomers in mind, as she can explain the many Community Trust Services and introduce people to our township. This is, of course, always fascinating to learn about no matter how long you have lived in Oxford. On top of an interesting presentation, the Forum loves to run occasional raffles at their events and even bring out the Christmas music for their last meeting of the year (this will be November the 4th). Running from 7-9pm, it sounds like a ball. Sandra admitted “the hardest part of going to a meeting is getting talked into running something!” She would also love to extend thanks to Margaret Thomas, the former secretary, who had to step down due to health issues. Margaret was a wonderful organiser, and the Forum is forever grateful for her hard work. It’s hard to say goodbye, but here’s hoping a return to the norm sees new, enthusiastic members before the year is out. If you would like to ask questions, Sandra is reachable at 03 3124047, and she would love to connect with potential members. Afterall, connecting has top priority in the Oxford Women's Forum.

COUNCIL U P DAT E with Councillor Wendy Doody

Having been part of a Council hearing on “Stock Water Race By Law”, I decided it was time to give some background to this historical and important piece of infrastructure to the farmlands from Oxford to Eyrewell. The water race transformed the Waimakariri-Ashley Plains when opened by the Prime Minister Richard Seddon in 1896. The Irrigation Scheme is a tribute to all the people, their initiatives and energy who created, managed and maintained the 800kms of water races covering 40,000 hectares over the past 125 years. In early 1892, after discussions by the local Roads Board concerning recent years of droughts and the need for an improved water scheme, elections were held and members of the 1st Waimakariri-Ashley Water Supply Board were elected, members inspected the Ashley Gorge and moved across country to the Waimakariri River at Rockford 6.5kms above the Gorge Bridge. Most were immediately convinced the Rockford was the ideal place for an intake even though it required a long tunnel. They were met by Marmaduke Dixon and his son, Marmaduke-John Dixon who promoted the merits of a cheaper intake at Browns Rock, 3.5kms below the Gorge Bridge. At this stage Marmaduke had been farming at Eyrewell for 40 years and had only the year before put in his own substantial water scheme. The scheme is best describe by a letter he wrote for the English mail “I am now going on with a small scheme on my own property quite independent of anyone else. It covers about 4000 acres, it is well in hand and about a fortnight will see the water on the land. We have been at it for about 4 – 5 weeks and have shifted about 6000 yards of slough (outer covering or overburden) land and got about 300 acres of land ploughed and hope by the New Year (1892) to have well up to 1000 acres under turnips and green crops. It will cost me 100 pounds, being my own contractor and engineer” The effects on the land was astonishing, as a hundred farmers and interested persons found when they attended a field day arranged by Marmaduke Dixon shortly before Christmas in 1891. EXTRACTS FROM THE OXFORD AND CUST OBSERVER; A large part of the meeting was spent discussing a letter from Dixon in which he offered to engineer and construct a race. It is preceded by an article describing his success at harnessing the Waimakariri River for irrigating his own property. The debate between Rockford and Browns Rock targeted two concerns the difference in price the larger tunnel at Rockford costing 31,000 pounds, as compared to Browns Rock being 10,000 pounds. The new Board set to work immediately borrowed 10,000 pounds and by November 1896, the intake and 76 metre tunnel blasted from the rock were completed and the main race took water to the Eyre Crossing 17kms away. The Opening 16th November 1896 was a Gala Day for the District but sadly Marmaduke Dixon did not live to see the Official Opening having died in 1895. A warm tribute was paid to his pioneering work by the Prime Minister Richard John Seddon. Hope you enjoyed reading a very short version of this important and historical infrastructure for our District. Regards Wendy twenty eight

We as a community are indebted to the Blackwell family for their donation that has brought about the purchase of this fantastic artwork and is part of celebrating their 150th anniversary. Giving back to Kaiapoi and Waimakariri is firmly embedded in the Blackwell family’s DNA and is highlighted in this beautiful new sculpture. From George Henry Blackwell to today’s generation of Andrew and Michael, we salute your commitment to our community and wish you a happy 150th anniversary. PEG A S U S MEN Z S H ED I enjoyed attending and speaking at the recent opening of the new Advice Kiwi Pegasus Menz Shed based at Gladstone Park in Woodend. From concept to completion this was achieved in 20 months which is remarkable and down to the commitment of the local committee and generosity and support of funders such as Joel McLachlan from Advice Kiwi. Council has supported the establishment of other Menz Sheds in the District because they are a great place to learn new skills, share skills, have a laugh and enjoy each other’s company as well as work on practical tasks - either personal or as a group - to benefit the community. If this is of interest to you I encourage you to make contact with your local Menz Shed – they would welcome your involvement. CO V I D VA CCI N AT I O N S I believe in the Covid vaccination programme and encourage everyone who is able to get vaccinated. It is our best chance to beat this virus and allow us to get back to normal. The more people who are fully vaccinated, the more protection we have against Covid, resulting in more freedom for all New Zealanders and the ability to also make the most of the coming summer season. If you haven’t already booked your vaccine you can do this at https://bookmyvaccine.covid19.health.nz or by phoning 0800CANVAX (226829). Recently I had the honour of laying a wreath at the Kaiapoi cenotaph to commemorate the 104th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele. 846 young New Zealanders lost their lives, including local residents. We can never thank those who gave the supreme sacrifice during World War 1 and conflicts since, but we can remember them always and not forget that it is due to their sacrifice that we enjoy our freedom today. Lest we forget. I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue they may want to discuss. Email me at dan.gordon@wmk.govt.nz or phone 021906437. I’m here to help.

Matt Dooc ey MP for Waimakariri

This week marks an important milestone in my search for the next Waimakariri Youth MP, with interviews taking place in two days. It has always been important for me to support young people, so it’s a no-brainer to include them in Parliament, along with giving them the skills and confidence to take part in questioning and debating. My former Waimakariri Youth MP Ellie Tizzard, a former leader at Oxford Area School, said being part of Youth Parliament 2019 had been a huge boost for her development. Ellie worked hard to deliver her project, to improve workplace literacy among Waimakariri’s youth, and she is now working for me as an intern to further develop this. She was one of just five students in the country to receive a Student Excellence Award for her work advancing the concerns of local youth at the NZ Area Schools’ Association Conference. Many people in Oxford will be well aware of Ellie’s impressive achievements, not least her former school, where I had the pleasure of talking to more potential future leaders earlier this month, and hopefully encouraging some of the seniors to apply. Youth Parliament takes place every three years, with the incoming Youth MP to attend the two-day event in July 2022 where they will debate, ask questions of Ministers, form select committees and take part in a conscience vote. They will get a thorough insight into the workings of Parliament, and have the chance to make a real difference in their own community. I am very much looking forward to meeting the next young person who will work alongside me in taking the voices of Waimakariri young people to Wellington.

Victor Bennett Allen - Vic. Vic loved living in Oxford and being a part of it's community. He would have been humbled by the many acts of respect and kindness shown by people in the time since he has passed and we, his family, have found great comfort in them. To the Oxford Medical Centre, St John Ambulance Service, The Oxford Men's Shed, Christine Roberts and all the people who have helped us, especially with his funeral plans, but also in the time after with baking and meals, thoughtful cards, flowers, kind words and the many other ways we have been comforted during Vic's illnesses and his passing, we can never thank you enough. You have affirmed for us what we have always known, and what Vic spent so much time ensuring: that Oxford is a wonderful community to live in.

It has been great to see some sun, and I am sure we would like to see a whole lot more of it. With the days getting longer, there are a lot more people out and about, so please be mindful when you are out driving, and be mindful when you are approaching a pedestrian crossing. There may be someone unexpectedly waiting to cross. In my experience with the warmer days and longer nights come more parties. If you are attending a gathering please organise a sober driver. It does not take much. I hear too many stories of people taking the chance and driving after having a few too many. Be safe out there. You are not the only person using the road. Your actions could have far reaching effects. Burglaries are increasing in the area again, so please be mindful about your security around your home and when you are travelling about. Take your keys out of your vehicles when they are parked at home, and put valuables out of sight when you leave the house. Keep an eye out for any suspicious activity in our area. If you do witness something, please let Police know. Remember if it’s happening now dial, “111” and if it’s already happened and there is no danger to life or property dial “105”. Thank you for your time. Until next month, be safe. Feel safe.

Another interesting month with the extreme weather conditions keeping the Brigade on it’s toes. Most of the twenty calls the Brigade received were over two or three days. We were asked to assist Sheffield Brigade at the hotel fire and a vegetation fire and the Springfield Brigade at a vegetation fire. In our area we were asked to attend nine vegetation fires, the most serious was just before the the Gary River Bridge which involved about 25 hectares. There were five calls to secure roofing iron etc, one motor vehicle accident with the occupant receiving moderate injuries, one to assist St John and to one of the more unusual call’s to assist in the rescue of a horse. This brings our total calls to the year to seventy five.

This month’s message is; The risk of wildfires is increasing around New Zealand due to climate change. We would like to encourage people to help defend their homes and property by keeping your grass short, keep gutters and areas around decks clear of dead leaves, debris and pine needles. IF YOU ARE NOT READY THE RISK IS ALWAYS EXTREME.

Firstly my apologies for not getting the time to get a write up prepared last month. The Oxford ambulance has had another couple of busy months, with our current job numbers about the same number we finished up on last year. It was World Sepsis Day on 15th September. Sepsis is a rapid moving condition that is life threatening. Complications of the infection affect the body’s immune response. It starts to damage its tissues and organs. As we age we have more medical problems and less ability to get infections under control before sepsis takes over. The sooner you get help the better the outcome. Signs of sepsis, slurred speech or confusion, difficult to wake. Extreme shivering or muscle pain, passing no urine for a day, severe breathlessness or breathing fast. “It feels like you are going to die.” Mottled blush or pale skin or feels abnormally cold to touch. May or may not have a high temperature, may even have a low temperature. Please have a low tolerance to call for help if you develop one or any of the above symptoms. We also appreciate any help we can get to find your house as quickly as possible. Please have your street number clearly on your front gate post. We had a case recently where there were bike lights put on the road gate post, and other posts where we were to turn. It made finding our patient very quick and easy. The ambulance station at Oxford is not manned 24 hours a day. If you require emergency assistance please call 111. Take care out there. Please keep an eye out for your elderly neighbours, Keep safe and stay positive.

toot for tucker . On Tuesday 7th December we will again be Tooting for Tucker. This charity food drive is now in its 11th year and we continue to be astounded by the generosity of our community as we set out to help fill the local food banks ahead of Christmas and the coming year. This year we are asking people to provide their own bags please. Where once Food Banks were seen as providing primarily for the poorer folks in our community often on benefits, that is no longer the case. Now those on lower wages who struggle to meet extra costs such as school fees, new uniforms, camp fees and of course the rates or a warrant or registration on the car, all which seemed to come at the same time, need assistance. Today, as a result of Covid, many of our small business owners are suffering, as the income they rely on is just not there, but bills still need to be paid. Our rural community has also suffered this year. Many farmers have had a great deal of damage done to their properties as a result of flooding and wind storms. More than ever, we need each other, and like the way we tackled Covid, when we came together to try and beat this thing, we now need to come together again to help those in our community who have a greater need. If we all give a little we will make a huge difference to those Food Banks in our areas. It will allow them to give to those who call on them. I remain eternally grateful to our sponsors, our community, and the volunteers who help us every year and for the support they continue to show Toot For Tucker – Proud To Live Here.
