Welcome to our October issue. We have had some pretty crazy weather lately. We are sure you all, like us, will be glad to see the winds calm down. Now that we are currently at Level 1 in the South Island it is great to see some events happening again. The Oxford & Districts Lions have been extremely busy and you will see a few events that they have coming up! We would like to welcome Tammy Pfahlert to the Observer. Tammy is a fantatastic photographer, and we are looking forward to working with her. Check out some of her photos of Moose the Deer on page 4. The Observer takes a lot of work from a lot of people, to come together, and find its way into your letterbox, or place of business. It is a big endeavour each month, and we appreciate everyone we work with, who is part of this process writers, photographers, proofreader, printers and delivery people. It truly is a labour of love, and your support means so much to us, so thank you to everyone who has reached out to us with kind words. We hope you enjoy this issue, as much as we enjoyed putting it together. We have a book to give away this month ‘A Baa-rilliant Adventure’ written by local author Jennifer Somervell. Email us at info@oxfordobserver.co.nz to be in to go in the draw to win. You can now check out the Observer online through our website www.schnurrbartdesignandpublishing.co.nz

You Deer call me Moose Words by Beka Hunt - Photos Tammy Pfahlert
If you have been fortunate enough to pass by the property of Rio Coster and Adam Green, you might have met their newest resident. If not, let me be the first to introduce you to Moose - a wild deer turned farmhand. Moose was found when he was no more than 48 hours old, after an unfortunate event involving his mother. He was carried home wrapped in a thermal and given straight to Rio, his soon to be mother. Rio bottle-fed him lambs’ milk and nursed him into a strapping young deer- albeit; one who considers himself a lamb/dog hybrid. Moose not only rides in the truck with the dogs, but has broken into the house on several occasions, surprising the surrogate family by rearranging their bedroom furniture, and taste testing it for good measure. One evening they even arrived inside to find each and every tomato gracing a singular bite mark- not quite his favourite snack. That would be crumpets (more specifically crumpets with honey), as he developed quite a taste for the treat after stealing a portion of Rios. All this adventure and not even a year old. He’s cheeky, inquisitive and hungry- characteristics of most young children. Fitting as he turns 1 in December. Moose has even been known to exercise his legs down Powells Road (usually when the dogs are away) when he is craving company. If you ever come across Moose, he has two beautiful earrings with the contact information of his owners, so that he never gets lost. He’s also been ‘fixed’, so can’t establish family ties elsewhere. Surprisingly, he’ll make a run for it when he is lonely; not when he is scared. In the recent thunderstorm he kept his cool, sheltering on the porch til the storm blew over. four
He’s not the usual pet, certainly not the first choice of many, but he sounds like a great one. If you ever see a young deer galavanting around Oxford, just try calling his name and he might deem you worthy of his love.

A more sustainable way to live Words by Emily Chapman - photos Bruce Chapman
Recently a tip off from a friend, sent us over to Old West Coast Road to a business called Living off the Land Ltd, for some food for our chickens. We not only got the chicken food, but some vegetable plants, and two Cox’s Orange apple trees, along with a hands on demonstration in the orchard, on how to plant them. Owners Gary and Vicki Knudsen set up the business a few years ago, and recently Gary has gone full time running the business. Gary says “I believe in not being dependent on anyone as much as possible”. He has a passion for plants and animals, and they grow and raise much of their own food, supplementing it with offerings from family members who are hunters, along with trout from the nearby Waimakariri River. Gary started to realise that there was interest in the way they lived, when visitors to their property would ask to see the vegetable garden and the sheep being milked. It surprised him, as this was just part of their everyday life, but other people were interested in what they were doing, and the business grew from this. Gary says “We run our business the way we run our lives”, and through the business they have the chance to show others how they live, and how they too can live a more sustainable life.
Gary says they are regularly getting new chickens in, and love having the fertiliser from the chickens to use for the gardens. Along with the chicken food, there is also food for other animals, including Hekeao Hemp Horse Feed. Gary says “I know the owner and his ethics, and it is naturally made in New Zealand”. As much as possible feed is sourced locally and apart from the horse food, Gary is able to show people how the food works for the animals on his property.
All the vegetable plants are grown from seed on the property and hardened off before they are sold. They target what they find are good producers, as Gary says it is important for them to know that what they are sending people away with, are plants that will grow and do well. This is a business that is obviously people driven rather than money driven, and Gary says, “we don’t just sell things, we will teach people how to plant, to prune and what we have learnt through experience.” There are no sprays or fungicides used on the property, which means the odd bug or two, but that is all part of the organic process. Their fruit trees are sourced through Waimea Nurseries, with orders in for two years down the track. Chickens are rehomed from an egg production facility, and when we visited there were 30 chickens ready to go to their new homes, after being cared for. six

FORR EST ENGINEERING General Engineering & Repair Work Design & Build items to client’s requirements >> Onsite welding & repairs
OPEN 9.am - 5.30pm Monday - Saturday
3134 Old West Coast Road (Look for the White Rooster) Since Covid-19 Gary believes people’s interest in the self sufficient lifestyle has grown. He feels that people have always wanted to grow their own food. It is often the reason they have bought lifestyle blocks, but then they have become too busy to make it happen.
>> Repairs & alterations to dairy yards & backing gates etc >> We build Hayfeeders & Palm Kernel trailers
However, the break in normal life helped them to take the next step. They have taken the opportunity to look at their lifestyles, their properties and made some changes towards becoming more self sufficient. Gary says “It is such a privilege to have this business. We are so blessed to meet beautiful people. The world is full of the most outstanding people.” He enjoys interacting with his customers, and children are always welcome to come and see the animals, taste the sheep’s milk icecream and get a look at what is happening each season on the property. If you do go for a visit, and have some spare seedling trays, please take them with you, as Gary uses all recycled trays for their plants and can always do with some more!

Selling Your House? Why Professional Photography is Now a “Must Have” Two seconds. That’s about how long you’ve got to grab a buyer’s attention online – less than the time it took you to read this paragraph. If your house is listed for sale on a website with shots that are dark, dingy, far away or badly framed, you’ll miss out on buyers. They’ll skim over your listing as their attention is grabbed by an eye-catching, well-lit “hero” shot of another home down the road. In addition, listings with poor quality photos are easily dismissed by high quality buyers but they do attract bargain hunters. The subconscious message is that if you can’t afford professional photography
you may be desperate to sell and willing to accept a low offer. In our fast paced society where advertising culture has shifted towards “showing” rather than “telling”, high quality, professional images are a “must have” to attract as many buyers as possible. More visitors to your open homes means more offers, more competition and more money on settlement day. Although smartphones are capable of taking fantastic photos, a great phone doesn’t make a great photographer. The small outlay for professional photography is well worth the return on investment. A professional real estate photographer
Di Moreira M 027 848 8020
will use image composition, lighting, angles and even the time of day to capture and tell the story of what living in your home could look like. They’ll use editing software to touch up and perfect the images. So if you’re selling, use professional photography to attract more buyers and achieve a better sale price. I’m also happy to offer an estimate of how much your home is worth. Let’s talk soon.

Face mask fundraiser for Waimakariri Gorge Golf Club Words and photo by Beka Hunt
If there’s one industry that will profit from Covid-19, it’s the face mask manufacturers. Here in Oxford, our Golf Club seems to have cornered the market. For the past few weeks a select group of Club Members have been creating masks, and selling them to raise money for improvements on the golf course. The idea came to Mary Te Awa when her grandchildren mentioned the need for masks, when using public transport. She made them willingly, realising the potential in the actionwhere there is demand, there should be a supply. When speaking, she recalled it was her craft club that met to amass designs, picking the most successful shape; interestingly the version from a YouTube tutorial. With a pattern acquired and a market to be conquered, the next major step was the amount of fabric required to make and sell hundreds of face masks. The select group of approximately 8 women took on the challenge and decided on a fabric type, style and sizes. Pure cotton, with a minimum of two layers for each mask, (as recommended by the Ministry of Health.) The fabric was eventually acquired cost free, when a handy email brought in piles of material. Even elastic wasn’t hard to come by. However, the supply is running low- probably since elastic isn’t the most desirable item to stockpile during a global pandemic. Either that, or it is a precious resource that owners are less willing to donate- a question for another day. Even so, face masks were made. The bulk were sewed in working bees, with efficient systems in place to maximise the cutting, sewing and pressing process. The resulting face masks have been selling like toilet paper before a Level 4 lockdown- rapidly. Many were snapped up in a recent club tournament. Mary confessed; “I think everybody’s surprised about how well it has done,“ as it is turning out to be quite a successful venture. They would love to thank the Main Street Bakery for assisting with their Fundraising, by providing an outlet for their masks. To snap up your own mask, look out for the stand in the Bakery, or other sellers in Oxford, and survive a pandemic in style.

Arts in Oxford celebrates 10 years Words by Shaz Davis - photo supplied
The Arts in Oxford Gallery, at 72 Main Street in Oxford, celebrated its 10th anniversary with a forum and discussion on the value of arts and culture within the Waimakariri district. This was followed by a talk, and collaborative painting by well-known NZ artist Philip Trusttum, to officially open his next exhibition: “What have we got here”; which runs until 8 November. “In addition to looking back to appreciate what it took for the community to raise enough money to build this community asset, celebrating within the context of Covid-19 has had us assess what we need to do, to be more robust and relevant, for the next 10 years, says Oxford Arts Trust Chair, Areta Wilkinson. “We’ve progressed from an ‘art on the walls’ gallery, to exploring ways to develop our creative sector, which is why we chose to celebrate our birthday through community engagement activities. Since lockdown we’ve realized how important online communities are, and we will be focusing more on that too. Making videos of artists’ stories and DIY workshop videos, so people can give something a go at home. During lockdown many people turned to the arts for their wellbeing. It was a reminder of how crucial these practices are and how creativity enhances our lives,” says Areta. The Oxford Arts Trust was recently awarded a Creative NZ grant, which has allowed the gallery to try new things, like print making workshops, to engage and connect with the local community. “It’s a new direction for the gallery – seeing art as a way to connect with people – and we’d love people to drop by and say hello, and have a look at the latest exhibition. With Covid-19 a lot of charitable trusts are struggling, or closing, as donations decrease, and we are confronted with that as well. We’re looking for more volunteers to help run the gallery, and would love to hear from other people and businesses to find out how they can contribute towards both the development of art and the gallery, and also how we can support them,” says Areta. The Arts in Oxford Gallery is open Fridays to Sundays from 10am to 4pm. Call 03 312 1639 or email artsinoxfordgallery@gmail.com.

Te Ara Atawhai creates job opportunities Words by Beka Hunt - photo supplied
Te Ara Atawhai is the brainchild of DOC and MSD - New Zealand's Department Of Conservation, and the Ministry of Social Development. The course was established in 2018, and produces future conservation workers, with an 80% employment rate coming out of the nine weeks. It’s a training program for DOC potentials, and quite a contrast to the 30 years of IT experience Reuben Hunt has under his belt - a drastic career change that certainly seems to have paid off. To be accepted onto the course, candidates had to be unemployed. Due to Covid 19, this provided an opportunity for employees looking to work in the field, but tied to other commitments. Tricky work contracts? Covid 19 took care of that. Reuben was one of the 88 initially interested candidates. After a vivid seminar explaining the gruelling aspects of the job, that number decreased drastically. Te Ara Atawhai is a training course for the physically fit and passionate environmentalists, which was not a strong selling point to many attendees. To be accepted, Reuben was subjected to one-on-one interviews and a “trial on Quail Island, where they were monitored by a number of DOC rangers, at all times as they installed a new culvert and dug drain ditches.
block owners, due to the skillset the course creates. In total, he worked in approximately 25 locations around the Canterbury region- even to Thongcaster Road. Reminiscing, he told me, “It is a life changing course. Yyou work with a team that could potentially be lifelong friends.
Of the 88 who attended the seminar, 8 were accepted, even though the maximum number they could take was 10. The operation was centred in the Mahaanui base in Sockburn, but DOC is hoping to roll it out across the country.
Te Ara Atawhai was an opportunity to work with passionate people who held the same beliefs. Reuben called it his second family. They ate, worked, and even slept together on an overnight tramp that marked the end of the course.
On the course, Reuben earned NZQA credits in Site Safety, First Aid and Grow Safe. He learnt to care for and use instruments in all terrains, and the techniques to maximise proficiency in brush cutting, weed spraying, tree planting and predator control.
Each participant received a certificate and a referral letter; precious documents to secure a job with the new qualifications. In fact, Reuben has already been offered positions- a bonus on top of the 4kg he lost, the new outfit and the skills. His career change is extraordinarily drastic, even bizarre, yet he couldn’t be happier.
As someone who has been living on lifestyle blocks since he arrived in New Zealand, he believes “it should be mandatory for all lifestyle

New owners for Black Beech Wine Bar Words by Shaz Davis - photo supplied
Dani and Pete Rielly have taken over the Black Beech Wine & Pizza Bar in Oxford’s Main Street. After deciding to return to New Zealand to be closer to their kids and grandkids, they looked around and bought both the wine bar, and a house in Oxford, on the same day – just before lockdown started. With lockdown happening, the couple went back to Australia for a while. Pete returned in June. He had to go into quarantine for two weeks and then set about getting the wine bar ready, and opened for business on 14 August. He hopes that Dani will be able to join him early in October, when they plan to hold an official re-launch. Pete says he hasn’t changed much at this stage; other than extending the opening hours. Black Beech is now open on Thursday and Friday from 4pm till late, and Saturday & Sunday from 11am till late. Although Pete worked mainly in the building industry, he used to help out at a friend’s restaurant from time to time and says: “It’s always something I wanted to do, and the wine bar offers a unique opportunity to seat people outside for a beer, or coffee, or whatever they like.” Black Beech will run as a husband and wife team with a couple of part-time staff. Pete says that it would not have been possible to get this venture up and running without the help of their children and their partners. They have been a huge help and we could not have done it without them. Plans for the future include a change in the seating, and small tweaks to the menu. “We’re a bit limited by our kitchen space so pizzas will always be our main food, but we’re planning to add tapas and other small dishes,” says Pete who has been busy painting the outside, getting ready for summer. Pop in for a boutique craft beer, a glass of wine or a gourmet pizza and say hello – or grab a takeaway pizza to enjoy at home. You can find the menu online at www.blackbeechbar.com or on Facebook. Mark I have had a few different school experiences, but didn’t really find school great. One of my old teachers suggested Community College and I completed the Emerge course last year. If you are not the type of person that feels comfortable in school environment than this is a great place, it helps you a lot. I would not be where I am now if it wasn’t for this course. The support of the tutors and staff is unbelievable and helps you to gain more confidence.
SPORT & RECREATION Grayson I wasn’t enjoying school, but here we are treated more like adults than we would be at school, and it is a lot easier to get work done not as many people around. We also have awesome support from the tutors, and it is helping me to get my credits to go on to other study.

Amelia - The thing I like the best here is the people. Everyone is so kind to each other, so welcoming, it makes me want to stay. I had been out of school for a while, but find the teaching here so good, it is not just in the classroom all the time, but out and about learning different things. I definitely want to get a job in the horse industry in the future.
Emma – I came down from Wellington to do this course as there is nothing like this in the North Island. I really enjoy it much more than school. It is such a supportive environment. The support you get from the tutors is more than just teaching, it is personal as well. I love the practical learning as well, we learn things like mowing lawns, fencing, life skills. I love people so I would love to work with people and horses, maybe trekking, or training of horses.

Ride for men’s health Words and photo by Shaz Davis
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is a worldwide event to raise funds to support prostrate cancer, and men’s mental health. Classic and vintage bike lovers from around the world, dress in dapper attire, to take part in a combined ride, on a designated day each year, although this year they will follow pandemic protocol and ride ‘solo together’. The Observer chatted to Oxford locals, David and Bren Morgan, before their participation in the 27th September event in Christchurch. David will be riding his 1986 BMW K100 with Bren in the sidecar. David has managed to raise more than $6,500 for Movember; the beneficiary of the fundraising.
“We’ve been blown away by the response we’ve had from everyone,” says Bren. But it’s not just the fundraising support. “When I talk to people about the ride, and the reasons for it, they often start to open up and share their personal stories,” says David. The couple feel motivated to “do their bit” for men’s mental health and prostrate cancer. “It is a combination of awareness that prostate cancer and mental health are pushed under the carpet, and a love of vintage motorbikes,” says Bren. They have four older style motorbikes. “We go out on the bike as often as we can. We love the freedom of it, and the camaraderie with other bikers and classic car people, is phenomenal,” says Bren. David’s love for bikes goes back over 50 years after getting a scooter at 16 in the UK. He upgraded as soon as he passed his motorbike test, and bought a 600 Panther with sidecar, and used to head off with his mates every weekend to go camping. He revisited his passion when he was given his brother’s 1979 Honda about 16 years ago, after his brother’s untimely death from cancer. If you’d like to make a contribution to men’s health issues, especially prostrate cancer and suicide prevention, donations can be made up until 23:59 on 11th October. Go to https://gfolk.me/ DavidMorgan367741 to make a donation or text or email David on 0277 046 935 / david-bren@xtra.co.nz and he will send you the link.

Make your health & wellbeing a priority with Livestrong PT Words by Emily Chapman - Photos Tammy Pfahlert
Oxford local, Ben Pfahlert, is passionate about helping people to achieve their health and fitness goals. Ben, who was previously working in the dairy industry, decided that working with people would be more fulfilling and strives to help them overcome challenges in their lives. Ben says, “I have always had a strong passion for the health and fitness side of things.” Ben’s dad got him started at a gym with a personal trainer as a young person, as he had been overweight as a teenager, and since then quality exercise and nutrition has kept him healthy, and has always been a part of his lifestyle.
He is also aware that it can be quite intimidating to start a gym programme, and also a mental challenge to overcome, but his homebased gym is a private, low key place for people to come and work on improving their wellbeing. He can work with clients one-on-one or in small groups. To get started Ben will take clients through a pre exercise screening, so he is clear on any health issues and injuries, and discuss personal goals, then get started with training at the individuals pace. His focus is on training the whole body with big compound exercises that get the whole body moving as well as huffy puffy/ cardio exercise. Sessions are 30-45 minutes, and he has flexible options available to fit around people’s work or family commitments. Ben and his wife Tammy have 3 children, when Ben is not working, he enjoys family life, bee keeping, gardening, hiking and hunting. If you would like to find out more check out his Facebook page @LiveStrongPT or give him a call on 027 834 7142. Not only has it been a part of his physical wellbeing, but it has helped improve his mental wellbeing, and helped him to work through depression and anxiety. Ben himself has a focus on exercise and nutrition and he wants to help others on a similar journey. Once he completed his study and qualified, he started working with a big gym in Christchurch. Although a good experience, Ben realised that this was not how he wanted to work. He found there were too many people, and it was often hard to get equipment. He says “I wanted to be training people in my own community and providing that service here. BOT News Kia ora koutou katoa
Kia ora koutou katoa, Oxford Area School recently celebrated the Māori language, during te wiki o te reo Māori / Māori Language Week; a week that has been celebrated each year since 1975. Māori language week is an opportunity for concentrated celebration, promotion and encouragement. And every minute of every hour, of every day, is a Māori language minute. We can choose to use te reo – every time we do, even just a ‘Kia ora!’ contributes to revitalisation. Our own kura / school story is steeped in a cultural narrative. Starting with dual naming of our school: Te Kura o te Poho Rakahua [the school of Mt Oxford] Oxford Area School In our story and our imagery, we hold our vision in the sky in the form of stars (whetū), and our values in the land which are our foundations. Our values and vision are connected by our goals and inspiration, the mountains (maunga). The mountains hold the instructions, the guides to reach the stars - our vision. Steeped in the mountains are whakataukī and whakatauakī (proverbs, sayings) that inspire us to climb to the top. Ngā mihi Mike Hart - Principal
Thank you for your support during Book Week. We raised much more than we expected and have over 70 new books to add to our library collection. We were also able to give book prizes to all our Dress-up and Colouring Competition winners. We could not have done this without the wider community supporting us. Nga mihi.

Elections, Elections, Elections. At the present time, we are being inundated with election debates, adverts, billboards and party promises for the upcoming 53rd New Zealand General Election. Back here at Oxford Area School, towards the end of this year, we will be holding mid-term elections for the Board of Trustees. School trustees play an important role in shaping the educational experience and achievements of students. This year we have two positions in our elections. We know that Boards work best when they reflect the diversity of their communities. That is why it’s so important for the Oxford Area School community to engage and have an opportunity to learn about, understand and participate in the upcoming elections. Timelines for elections are; we will be calling for nominations from October 11th 2020 until November 1st. Voting commences on 6th November with Election Day being December 4th. After votes are counted the new Board takes office on 11th December 2020. In addition to the end of year mid-term elections, due to a recent resignation, we have a casual vacancy to fill also. This does not require an election process but does require someone committed to our school and our students achievements. This person will sit on our board for a period of 18 months following the upcoming elections completion date, after which they will then also go through the election process in the triennial elections if keen to continue in the roll. The school has also recently held our Student Trustee Elections and would like to congratulate Journie Karaitiana for being re-elected into this position. Journie has been a very valuable team member over the last year, and we look forward to working with her over the next coming year as a good strong voice for our students’ representation. Our students’ voice matters, and Journie plays a very important role in making their voice heard. To those other students that stood for this position, a huge thank you for giving it a go, and thinking of helping our school and your fellow students. Ngā mihi Matt Riley - BOT Chairperson
Past student shares her experiences of life after school On Monday the 21st September Rhiannon Moore, a past student of 2017, head girl and 13 years of schooling at Oxford Area School, came and spoke with our year 12 and 13 students, about life after school. Rhiannon shared her experiences from taking a gap year, Camp America, to almost completing her degree in environmental sciences and political sciences at Victoria University in Wellington. Rhiannon's main message was to embrace the unknown, to be prepared to step outside your comfort zone where personal growth begins. Rhiannon shared her experiences of schooling in Oxford, and is very proud of her country school education and all the opportunities that came with it. We are very lucky to have such a wonderful young woman come in to share this with our students. Arohanui ki a koe e hoa Rhiannon . We all wish you the best as you embark on your next unknown - life after university.

Year 5/6 Syndicate camp Written by Matilda Burns and Benny Ward We had a very exciting, cold and wet overnight experience at Hanmer Springs. On the 10th September, Yr 5/6 went on a trip to Hanmer Forest Camp. There were four activities to choose from. The Tree climbing was really exciting! Only a few people made it to the top of the tree. Secondly, there was Mountain biking in the forest, which was very muddy. There was also Mission Impossible which was a team-building activity. Last but not least, there was Orienteering where we would follow a map to find the numbers and letters all around the forest. The last thing we did before heading back to school was going to the Hanmer Springs hot pools. It was really fun, but it started hailing when we got there. My favourite ride was Conical thrill because it gave you butterflies in our stomach. Overall It was a really enjoyable camp!
Sefton Riding Centre Primary Schools Show Jumping On Saturday 19th September Oxford Area School took part in the Sefton Riding Centre Primary Schools Show Jumping Competition in Sefton. Two teams were entered. One is Class 1 (obstacle course, poles or 25cm) and one in Class 2 (45cm, 65cm or 80cm) The girls all had a fabulous day competing and Team 1 came away with a first place in their class, which was very exciting.

Local Author’s ‘Baa-rilliant Adventure’ When local author Jennifer Somervell first travelled to Israel in 2014, she had no idea it would result in a book. What she does remember is on her second visit, while buying an illustrated ‘Animals of the Bible’, that she knew would be needed for illustrating, the bus left without her. “I got a real ribbing for that!” “The storyline came,” said Jennifer, “as I was imagining the angel appearing to shepherds and their sheep in the fields outside Bethlehem. And I thought, WWhat happened to the sheep? Wouldn’t they follow their shepherds? What might happen if they did”? An atmospheric and dramatic adventure story results, as three sheep, Rumbly, Tumbly and Woolly, stumble after their shepherds in the dark. Written in 2014, it was five years before Jennifer found the right illustrator. Zerika van Jaarsveld was visiting a friend in Oxford in the summer of 2019, when they met.
Photo - David Ford
“I saw how Zerika captured emotion and facial expressions in her paintings, and I was excited. I knew she could show the love of the shepherd for his sheep.”
and shepherds of the time.Jennifer’s niece, designer Ezra Andre worked through lockdown to make its print deadline. She also came up with the ‘baa-rilliant’ title. Jennifer is thrilled with the reviews - comments like ‘exquisite pictures’, ‘brilliant re-telling’, ‘novel and dramatic storyline’, and ‘depth and richness of the historical information’.
A working partnership began. Jennifer and Zerika didn’t want a book that looked like a Westernised nativity Christmas card. They wanted the Middle Eastern setting to look genuine. But it was difficult. Some things were hard to nail. So, they sought help from a scholar in Israel to check their pictures. Covid 19 seemed like a spanner in the works. I thought, “How are we going to finance this and get it to print now? Then some wonderfully generous people believed in us, and invested in the book. Without them, it would never have made it to print. I will be forever grateful. This book belongs to them, as much as to us.” While Zerika laboured over the pictures, Jennifer’s husband, Ken Fletcher, spent evenings and weekends researching what became the non-fiction, end section, revealing the real nativity history, and the close relationship between sheep
“There are layers in this book. On one level it can be read as a dramatic story of three delightful sheep characters. But it also speaks of the good shepherd and what that means. In the words of my travelling companion to Israel, “It’s a book that keeps on giving.” The community is invited to the book launch Saturday October 3 at 3pm at the Oxford Jaycee Rooms, 56 main Street. Please RSVP asap for catering purposes to Jennifer at 027 452 9858 or books@landinglights.co.nz. Books will be available after the launch, at Emmas of Oxford, & Paper Tree, Rangiora

Here We Go again… with Hank van Keulen
“Here we go again”. A thought that we all experienced over the last couple of weeks. Well, I certainly have. The anxiety of uncertainty. The fear of restraint. The waiting for the 1 pm announcement of new Covid cases… again!! More importantly, where they are! Level 2, however, I would suggest wasn’t too arduous for most of us. Scanning the QR codes is a pain but again not that difficult. And now we’re back to normal, well, as normal as can be expected. Once again, we hear comments of “the new norm” and “get used to it, it’ll happen again”. I must admit, I’m a bit over that. Life is a constant change. Life is a constant string of events that are progression, good or bad. It’s often been said that the only constant in life is change. And there are only two certainties in life, death and paying taxes! After all, we’re human. It’s in our nature to change, to advance, to progress and sometimes it’s things we don’t necessarily like that much. It’s not a matter of getting used to it, it’s more a matter of that’s what we are whether we like it or not.

I’m not a religious man, but, many of us have heard the prayer “God, give us the serenity to accept that which we cannot change, the courage to change that which we can and the wisdom to know one from the other.” We need to, I need to, stop worrying about things that are beyond my control. Take it on the chin. By all means be informed but accept it, deal with it, and move on. I know that’s all a bit philosophical, but it’s also real. I’m very much about keeping it real. There’s just one more short comment I’d like to make. I’m not strongly politically opinionated but do have personal thoughts on the subject. It’s not in any way my intention here to give any personal political opinion but, I urge you to spare a kind thought for the Government of the day. They are and have been for the last few months in the unenviable position of “damned if we do and damned if we don’t”. The decisions they are asked to make are some of the most difficult in current living memory. It doesn’t matter who is in power and the actual decisions they have made. What matters is that they have made decisions. Right or wrong, that’s better than what we see in the world around us. Remember, they too are all people like us. They too have families, emotions, personal opinions, everyday stresses. But they too breath the same air as us, live in the same country as us and it’s also their children that will inherit our legacy. Now back to our business. We’ve recently experienced a number of clients querying increases in their insurance premiums.
MEET THE CANDIDATES Sunday 11th October at the Oxford Club
Yes, overall, insurance premiums have gone up. It’s a sign of the times. Again, it’s not something we can control. But what we can control is being aware and informed of what it is that we’re paying for. What we can control is seeking good advice and guidance on what is necessity rather than nice to have. Remember, hope for the best but plan for the worst. Jill and I recently reviewed our own insurances due to an increase in premiums and we’ve made adjustments based on the changes in our personal circumstances. We looked carefully at necessity as opposed to nice. We took good advice… from me!! If you already have an adviser, like Jill and I have, and you’re happy and confident with them, then seek their counsel. If not, then feel free to call, we can help. Afterall, it is what we do.

How many seasons do you think there are in a year? The most common answer is four. In the fashion world there are literally 52 micro seasons! That means new drops, lines and trends are brought out even faster than we, as a consumer can buy them. No wonder we get confused and overwhelmed with what is available. When I’m asked what is on trend I often say ‘well for the next 12 hours it is this, but wait another 12 hours and it will be that’. We are constantly overloaded with new visual information and it can leave you feeling slightly exhausted, and a little behind the 8 ball all the time. Mother Nature had the right idea with only going for 4 seasons, (even though she can give us all four of the seasons in one day sometimes). How do you combat this problem? Let’s think about what fashion means to you. For me, fashion is meant to be about personal expression, and having fun. Fashion to me doesn’t mean wearing the latest trend constantly. Trend does not equal personal style. You can learn all the style lines and tips and colours, but if you don’t feel comfortable in the clothes, then it isn’t you and you won’t wear them. Being clear on how you want to present yourself to the world helps so much, when making purchases for your wardrobe. Instead of being dictated to by the ‘trend’ in the store, you will make choices from your own personality style. Because we are all unique, you won’t fit into one neat, pretty, little box of style. Thank goodness, because how boring would that be? But you can take bits and pieces from different trends and create your own style. Working out your ‘north star’ is vital to planning the wardrobe journey. Words such as relaxed, natural, creative, classic, soft, refined, feminine, arty, edgy etc all evoke emotion or a feeling in us. When we look at clothing or a style, we get a feeling. Some good and some not so good. The ‘north star’ helps direct you and remind you of your own personal style. It’s really one of my favourite subjects in the world. Hence ‘Be your own kind of beautiful’ is part of polkadotcom’s north star. Before you purchase new items for the upcoming season, see if you can take note of your own taste and make sure that these items line up. Have fun and enjoy the freshness of spring.

Oxford Women’s Forum Formed over 34 years ago, and still going strong today with over 30 members. Oxford Women’s Forum was started by a group of likeminded ladies, who thought that women (aged over 16), would enjoy a casual evening out for a couple of hours for a meal, and to hear an interesting speaker/entertainer. With only five meetings per year (MarNov) there are no ties; just a great way to catch up for an evening, that is relaxed, entertaining and has a great sense of camaraderie. All for $25. We have a new committee, but would also like new members with new ideas for future speakers/entertainers. The next Women’s Forum get together will be on Thurs 5th Nov from 6.45pm, at Oscars restaurant at the Oxford Club. There will be a pre-Christmas feel for our last meeting of the year. We will have a Christmas feast, and Christmas music. We will also have a raffle to help with future advertising and gifts for our speakers. Bring a new member ,or catch up with old friends. The more the merrier.

Hayfever is a term used to describe an allergy, which may be either seasonal, such as in spring when there is plenty of pollen or new plant growth which causes the allergy; or perennial, when you are allergic to dust, pet hair or other irritant substances. The severity and type of hayfever varies from person to person, but can make you miserable if not treated and the symptoms prevented. When you have an allergy, the body releases a substance called histamine, which is why the most common medicines used to treat allergies are called antihistamines. These block the effect of histamine and will prevent any more histamine release, which should prevent the allergy getting worse. Other treatments often involve a nasal drop or spray. These include steroid based sprays, antihistamine sprays, saline rinses or sprays and decongestant drops or sprays. Eye drops are also available to help with itchy watery eyes. A cough may occur from persistent nasal secretions running down and irritating the back of the throat. This is called postnasal drip, and may also be helped by antihistamines, and should not be treated with medicines to stop coughing. Talk to your community pharmacist about the right medicine to treat your hayfever, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as not all medications are recommended.

Mitch Alatalo Spring is here and with that comes weather that changes at a moments notice, and we have already had our fair share of wild weather. So please take your time if you are driving, and if you are heading out into the back country, take a look at the weather forecast and be prepared. I have been lucky to get out and beat the tracks with the family. I couldn’t help but notice all of the animal signs about. I thought it would be appropriate to remind everyone about their, and everyone else’s safety, while out there enjoying what our beautiful district has to offer. From a policing point of view, the area is looking in good shape. I am really pleased to see the amount of people reporting suspicious behaviour, not only via the usual platforms, but also to Police. Like I say, every little bit of information helps. It really does. It’s also great to see everyone looking out for each other. Community spirit is alive and well. On a short, but sweet note, if anyone is interested in the Oxford Community Night Patrol, they are always looking for keen new people to join the team. Make yourself known to myself or Aden and we can point you in the right direction. You are the eyes and ears of the community. Last but not least, enjoy the school holidays, and have a great time with your kids. Breathe. Smile. Have an ice cream or two, and be safe.
St John Ambulance report
Well it has been a busy time for the Oxford truck; attending jobs in Darfield, Rangiora, Waikuku to mention a few. We are on course to have one of our busiest years to date. Strokes seem to be a common reason to be called out. Remember “Time is Tissue”. The faster we can get you to E.D. the better your chances of having a full recovery. FACE Is their face drooping on one side? Can they smile? ARM Is one arm weak? Can they raise both arms? SPEECH Is their speech jumbled or slurred? Can they speak at all? TAKE ACTION Call 111 immediately. Even if you are unsure of the time of onset, call as soon as possible. Can we all remind our children and remember when we are riding our bikes, scooters, skateboards on the footpath and approaching people from behind, to just sing out “Hello”. I have been made aware of people getting a dreadful fright not hearing people coming up from behind. We are finding there are a number of mailboxes without numbers, or where there are joint driveways, we have no idea which house we should be going to. A simple number on the box or post at the house gateway, will help us, help you. This may seem simple, but could be the difference between life and death.

August was a little busier than the last month ,with five calls. One call was to assist the Rangiora Fire Brigade at a vegetation fire. The other calls in our area were to three false alarms: one to a slash burn which was under control by the owner, one to a commercial smoke alarm activation set off by the cleaner and the other to a residential house with a faulty alarm, which was replaced by the Brigade. The other call was to assist StJohn. This brings our total calls for the year to fifty one.
