Welcome to our September issue. It was a bit touch and go as to whether we would be able to get this out to you. We are able to print at Level 4 but not distribute, so were waiting with anticipation for the announcement of Level 3, as we know all other business would be as well! While it is a stressful time again, we have made time to enjoy the beautiful weather, prepare our vegetable gardens for spring, and get outside as much as possible. We can't help but feel grateful that we live in North Canterbury at a time like this. With lots of space, and supportive communities, we believe it is the best place to be! Thank you for your support, and the support of the local businesses advertising with us. We hope for smoother times ahead for everyone.

FIGHT THE VIRUS
Whether you live in the township or out on the farms We’re asking you all to bare your arms There’s a virus rampaging out there on the street And it’s hunting down people at the places they meet We have one defence against the spreading infection It’s simply to roll up our sleeves and have an injection All that we need is two little jabs To stop living in fear of results from the labs So let’s all join together and take up this ght And it won’t take very long until the end is in sight The goal is to have a life where we can be free And each and every one of us hold the key So don’t be afraid and don’t show hesitation Be proud of yourself when you have the vaccination By Robyn Salton

how to get ahead of p et
all ergy season
by Tracy Ashley
Allergies in pets have grown to be one of the leading causes for a trip to the vet. However, you can often manage it without the vet bill, by understanding & identifying the root cause, and then putting in place an ongoing management plan. Prevention is best, but what if the problem is already in your pets life? You know that spring ( allergy season) is nearing, and you are dreading the next flare-up. What can you do to prevent or alleviate the reaction?
1.CHECK & BOOST THE DIET.
Don’t just feed them, nourish them. Think of it as feeding the Immune system. If you are already managing food or environmental allergies, make sure that they are getting a good variety of hypo-allergenic flavours in their diet to prevent deficiencies & new allergies. Make sure that the ingredients are of quality, and not too high in potato, cereals, soy and artificial preservatives that can upset the immune system too. Our top flavours are a variety of quality fish options, kangaroo, venison, goat and lamb. It is unusual to see reactions to these, and sometimes it is not the meat, but other additives in some foods that can flare things up. So if your pet can handle these, then you are away on a great diet plan. If food has not been identified as an everyday issue, but rather an environmental issue, then a boost in a diet high in omegas leading up to and over this period to support the immune system can alleviate a major flare-up. Good levels of Omega essential fatty acids are essential for all allergy pets all of the time.
2.BOOST GUT HEALTH.
The digestive system and Immune system are tightly linked when it comes to allergies. Building and maintaining bacteria and microbes is crucial to the success of allergy management, as well as all other aspects of your pet’s health. Frequent de-worming kills off this healthy bacteria, and it is common to see increased itching after a dose, possibly also a reaction of the immune system not handling the poison. Our pet specific pre & probiotics are a must to rebuild gut flora after a worming treatment. If your pet severely reacts to these, there are also effective homeopathic & herbal options to reduce worm burden, that do not upset gut flora or create side effects that may be better suited in these instances.
3. USE NATURAL REMEDIES.
There is a big movement away from conventional medicines, and toward old school herbs or homeopathy in efforts to reduce or eliminate side effects that conventional medicines can incur, and some suppress the immune system further. Homeopathy has been used since the 18th Century and herbs even longer. Many of today’s conventional medicines were derived from these. Homeopathy, when properly applied is extremely effective and safe to use on pregnant/ lactating and the ill thriving. Our Tagiwig range of homeopathic solutions help with allergies by supporting the immune system and include natural parasite care options. If you suspect your pet may have allergies, or are looking for an alternative allergy food to your existing management programme, pop in to see if any of our alternatives may help. Frews
c el ebrates 100 years
A hundred years is a notable time for any transport company to be in business. But when its still under the ownership of the founding family, now there’s a real accomplishment! … and that’s what Canterbury firm Frews can boast as it closes in on its centennial, to be celebrated next month. Home base for the rural transport operation of Frews Transport is the mid-Canterbury town of Darfield, 50km inland from Christchurch, while associated with Frews Contracting (independent, but still family owned) is headquartered in the Christchurch suburb of Yaldhurst. Just as noteworthy as the continuity of ownership is the consistency of the type of work Frews Transport does. At its core, the company services a rural farming community – carting stock and grain, delivery and spreading fertiliser, operating a regional freight service – in the same way E.H. (Edgar Harold) Frew and his partner W. McCrostie did when they started up McCrostie and Frew in the Greendale area in 1921. Naturally, in terms of equipment, the operation then was a lot more modest, a single traction engine compared with the around 60 vehicles of the current fleet, plus the more than 25 trucks and many more machinery items run by Frews Contracting. Edgar Frew eventually took over sole ownership, and on retirement his son, John, took over and generated a period of expansion, both locally and in the Oxford and Rangiora areas of North Canterbury. John was succeeded by his three sons, Evan, Merv and Owen. Faced with the complexities of multiple family ownership, in the mid-1990’s the company was split into three equal divisions, each set up as a stand-alone commercial entity. Owen took Frews North Canterbury, Evan – Frews Contracting, and Merv retains Frews Transport. Owen has subsequently sold Frews North Canterbury, with the Oxford part of operation being bought by Frews Transport. With Evan and Merv retired from the day-to-day operation of the companies, it has now passed onto a fourth generation, with Merv’s sons Chaz and Dean now joint owners of Frews Transport and Evan’s son Hamish owning Frews Contracting. As Merv Frew puts it, making a century with the family still integral is a remarkable achievement. “Not many companies have been going 100 years and have the same family actually running them. The name might be the same, but in most cases the ownership has changed. Evan and I are third generation, while Chaz, Dean and Hamish are fourth generation down from the original”

colour me good .
Lately I have been making hops, skips and jumps about how to wear colour. What I have been noticing is that colour doesn’t discriminate, but we definitely do.
Just because it is a bigger canvas, it doesn’t mean that you can’t put colour on this canvas! You are going to evaluate where you want the focal point to be, and how you want it to look over all.
We set rules such as, you have to be a certain size and age to be able to pull colour off, which can be so limiting.
The only thing that needs to be considered to use colour for the canvas, is scale. Not how old or young the canvas is, or where the canvas came from, or where the canvas is going.
Now these mindsets can sneak in at any time, and can lull you into thinking they are true. Especially if you don’t challenge them. We also can get locked into the mindset of our size, and that only certain things suit that size.
Those things won’t matter to the canvas, and whether it can have colour on it or not. Those things matter to the artist, and the artist’s preference as to colours they like or want to use.
Think about yourself like a canvas. If you are going to paint a canvas that is teeny tiny, then your scale will be different.
Do you see how when we talk about an artist and a canvas, it can be so much easier to put in perspective. As soon as we talk about us being the artist and the canvas being our body, then it can throw us into a bit of a flap as to how to create a look for ourselves.
Just because it is tiny doesn’t mean that you can’t put colour on the canvas. It just means where you put it is important, and to what scale.
Simplify it down, so it’s more manageable.
Now think of a huge canvas. You are going to use a different scale to create the look you want.
Who knows, you may even end up loving colour, and playing with different ideas!

FASHION fashion show benefits
SHOW mental health in the community .
August 6th saw Flaxmill Events Centre transformed into a runway for the ‘Spring out of the Blue’ fashion show put on by Robyn Paget of Thea’s New and Pre-Loved Boutique.
The event was a sell-out, and attendees were treated to night of fashion, music and fun.
Over $3000.00 was raised, and these funds will go to benefit the mental health work undertaken in the community by the Oxford Community Trust. Robyn says it was great to showcase clothing from her boutique, but “supporting a cause that is real to me and many people” was the driving force behind the event.
Oxford Community Trust manager, Jo Ealam says “we are so grateful for the support of Robyn and the team putting on this event. Not only will the money help greatly in the work we do, but the support shown by the community for the cause, is very uplifting for us.” Thank you to Fresh Choice for their donation to the event, and also to Love Ya Fudge, Polkadotcom, Andrea Kewish Photography, Emma’s at Oxford, Thea’s, Daisy’s Wedding Flowers, World Famous Sheffield Pies, Oxford Pharmacy, Marina Vermaat Massage Therapist, for their donations of raffle prizes.

recip e of the month . by Louize Juniper
I’ve chosen this recipe this month as I’m very aware of the price of green vegetable at this time of year and as we head closer to spring we feel the need for lighter fresher tastes. This is an affordable, easy, zingy and quick to produce. Just use frozen veggies to create this tasty colourful dish. Happy cooking!
T H A I C H I C K E N B A L L C U R RY APROX 4 PORTIONS THAI CHICKEN BALLS Zest Lime 2 Tabsp Cornflour ¼ Cup Coconut Cream Pinch Salt 1 Teasp Sesame Oil Black Sesame Seeds
500g Chicken Mince 25g Lemon Grass 50g Fresh Ginger 3 Cloves Garlic 2 Tabsp Fish Sauce
Oven 180oC Lightly oil baking sheet. Blitz Lemon grass, ginger, garlic, lime zest, fish sauce in blender or Nutra bullet to create a paste. Put minced chicken, coconut cream, cornflour, salt, sesame oil and ginger/garlic paste into a bowl or food mixer and mix together until well combined. Using a couple of desert spoons place even size spoonfuls on to your oiled baking sheet. Sprinkle with black sesame seeds. Bake in oven for 10 mins. Once these chicken balls are cooked they are perfect for lots of things i.e. tasty filling for wraps, great finger food for a party, add to a light Asian noodle soup, or just a yummy flavours light snack bite. NOW FOR THE SAUCE……….. THAI CURRY SAUCE 2 Tabsp light oil or Coconut oil 1 Red Onion finely sliced 2 Tabsp Grated Fresh Ginger 2 Cloves Garlic Crushed 1 Tabsp Turmeric 2 Tabsp Green Curry Paste (more if you like it really hot) Head Broccoli cut into florets
½ Cup Edamame Beans 1 Cup Baby Green Beans 2 Spring onions sliced thinly ¾ Can Coconut Cream ½ Cup Liquid Chicken Stock or just water 1 Tabsp Fish Sauce Juice one Lime Coriander Chopped (optional for garnish)
I like to use a wok on a portable gas camping style hob, as I don’t have a gas hob at home and find an electric hob is not hot enough for wok cooking.
Boil a saucepan of water. Once water is boiling add broccoli, green beans and edamame beans. Boil for 1 minute then drain. Heat oil, add red onion, garlic, ginger stirring all the time. Add turmeric and green curry paste. Cook for 2 minutes to cook out the spices, stirring all the time. Add the green veggies, pour over Coconut cream, stock, fish sauce and lime juice. Bring to boil and reduce for a couple of minutes, then add chicken balls and spring onions. Serve on Rice Noodles. I prefer wide ribbon noodles. Garnish with chopped coriander, wedge of lime and drizzle of sesame oil.

how to g et in shap e this spring . by Candice Breeze
Candice Breeze chats with Ben Pfahlert about ways to get up and moving this spring.
1 . S E T YO U R S E L F A R E A L I S T I C G O A L
One thing when looking at setting exercise or fitness goals is making them realistic and achievable. If they end up being goals that are too large or seem unattainable, we are less likely to stick to them. If we do small manageable goals over time, we are more likely to get achieve those bigger fitness goals we have in mind for ourselves.
2 . F I N D A M O T I VAT I O N B U D DY
If you find it hard to stay motivated, try finding someone who has the desire to experience the same positive change in their lives as you do. They don’t need to have the same goals as you do. It just helps to keep each other accountable and to stay on track to achieving what you’ve both set out to accomplish.
3 . C H O O S E A N E X E R C I S E YO U E N J OY
If you enjoy doing a certain exercise there’s a higher chance you will be able to stick to it in the long run. While some people may enjoy higher intensity work outs, others may prefer going for walks or doing yoga. Whichever exercise suits you, I encourage you to challenge yourself in a way you can see improvement. That way you know your hard work is paying off.
4 . D O 3 0 M I N U T E S A D AY
Aim to do at least 30 minutes of exercise each day, enough so that you get huffing and puffing is a great start. If that feels too much, then start with 10 minutes a day and gradually improve from there.
5. MIX IT UP
For optimal health and wellbeing it is ideal to include a mix of cardio exercise, (huffing and puffing), and resistance training (weight bearing exercises), and stretching rather than just focusing on one thing.
Please note: If you are new to exercise, or have any health condition be sure to consult your GP or other qualified health professional, who can advise you on where to get started. Growing up in his early teens Ben struggled with mental health and poor eating habits, which contributed to him becoming overweight. It wasn’t until he started exercising regularly and making healthy decisions, that he noticed how quality exercise and food could impact heavily on his physical and mental health. “Naturally I was keen on learning more and that led me to studying with Max College for Fitness Professionals to become qualified to help others achieve similar results,” said Ben Pfahlert.

Amy’s
b est books for spring ! by Amy Riach
Before You Knew My Name
by Jacqueline Bublitz
There are some books that are best read in the middle of the day, when the sun is shining, and nothing could possibly be hiding in the shadows. Before You Knew My Name is one of those books, and the newly released thriller is much more than the latest crime novel. You might think that you already know this story; a young girl runs away to New York, and before long she finds herself caught up in it’s underbelly. Then all at once the city is left with it’s latest Jane Doe, the 18 year old murdered and the cops looking for the person who brandished the knife. But this is not that story. This is a story that doesn’t ask whodunnit, but instead, who was she? And who was the jogger who found her? This Jane Doe was once named Alice, when she was a person and not a body. And this is not a cop story. It’s a book about two women who are unable to let the other go. It’s a crime novel that is also a romance, and a murderous thriller with a femminist narrative. While Covid might have kept most of us out of airports, this is a book that will transport you all the way to New York.
The Seven Sisters by
Lucinda Riley
The first in a great series, by Lucinda Riley, who recently passed away. The mythological novel is worth all of the hype that surrounds it. A light, easy read for the mild spring days, The Seven Sisters travels back and forth across time between eldest sister Maia and her ancestors in Brazil. Named for the constellation of Pleiades, the star cluster of legend that are the daughters of Atlas in Greek mythology, and the sisters of Matariki here in New Zealand. Maia D’Apliese and her sisters were all adopted as babies by the elusive billionaire they call Pa Salt. But now their father has died, leaving in his wake a rather cryptic clue, one that promises to lead them each to their true heritage. The enigmatic coordinates lead the reclusive Maia across the world to a crumbling estate in Rio de Janeiro Brazil, and there she begins to learn where her story started, so long ago in this country on the other side of the world. Eighty years earlier, Izabela Bonifacio rebels against a constricting society, and in a captivating back and forth the first sister and the brightest star discovers who she truly is.
Concrete Rose
by Angie Thomas
In spring, when the gardens grow faster than they can possibly be weeded, this is a story about all the roses that bloom in concrete, and it’s a book that is best left unread until a box of tissues and copious amounts of chocolate are available. In the stunning and heartbreaking prequel, Angie Thomas returns to the neighbourhood of Garden Heights, 17 years before the events of her debut novel The Hate You Give. Maverick Carter is just a kid, but now that he’s the man of the house, he’s doing everything he can to look after his family. And as the son of a former gang legend, that means dealing. It’s not perfect, but it does means that his mother won’t have to worry about the power bill. Only then Maverik finds out that he’s a father. And suddenly the 17 year old without a dad finds that it’s not so easy to raise a child, finish school, and keep dealing on the sly. So when Maverik gets offered the chance to go straight he takes it, even though the supermarket is boring, and the grouch who hires him isn’t so easy to get along with. But just as he settles into this new world, it is turned on its head once again. And with another Black kid murdered, Maverick is left to find out on his own, what it really means to be a man.

North Canterbury Canta Maths Competition
Olympic Ambassador Visit
by Claudia Faulkner
by Claudia Faulkner
Three teams represented Oxford Area School on Wednesday the 11th of August at the Ohoka Sports and Events Centre.
We were very lucky to welcome Aaron Orangi, a New Zealand Olympic Ambassador to Oxford Area School last month! In 2006, Aaron was one of five New Zealand bobsleigh racers selected for the Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy. Aaron talked about his Olympic dream and how he got there (in a very different sport than he originally imagined)! Our team Explore and Year 7 & 8 students enjoyed listening to Aaron's journey and what was involved in being in the NZ Olympic bobsleigh team. It was exciting to see the bobsleigh in person and the equipment/gear involved. Thank you Aaron for coming to speak to our Olympic enthusiasts!
Twelve students represented Oxford Area School at the North Canterbury Canta Maths competition on Wednesday. The Ohoka Sports and Events Centre was full of keen mathematic enthusiasts and it was great to see the students in their element! All three teams were excellent role models for Oxford Area School and did extremely well in their respective competitions.
Behind the scenes, the level of planning that has gone into making this work is huge. From the provision of IT support to ensure online learning is seamless, to creating the content for our students, to ensuring our communities are well supported. We should all be proud. One of the highlights prior to lockdown was the successes of the New Zealand Area Schools Tournament. We are incredibly proud of our students who played hard but played fair. To have seven students representing the Top of the South Island, six representing the South Island and six being selected to represent New Zealand representative teams, is impressive. It is important to acknowledge the hard work of the adults involved, including their whānau, Emma Don for travelling with the team to support them at the event, and Deb Baggot for her organisation of the tournament.
A special congratulations to the Year 6 team comprising of Scarlett Griffiths, Fletcher Griffiths, Sam Froud, and Alexander McKinney who placed third in their competition. A very big thank you to Mrs Evans and Miss Robb for their organisation and training the teams.
Success at the 2021 Skoda South Island CX Championships by Deb Baggott Myles and Alice McLachlan competed at the Cyclo-Cross (CX) champs in Hagley Park, Christchurch on July 24. They both competed in the Under 14 races and raced well on the day showing a lot of determination. Alice finished 3rd place in the U14 girls and Myles 2nd (almost taking the win) in the U14 boys. They should be very proud of their achievements. Don't know what Cyclo-Cross is? Cyclo-Cross is a form of cycling, usually consisting of many laps of a short course featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills and obstacles requiring the rider to quickly dismount and carry their bike, while navigating the obstruction and remount.

Boyle River Camp Outdoor Education Class
NZ Area Schools Sports Tournament
by Emma Don
by Emma Don
In the last week of Term 2 our senior Outdoor Education class spent a week at Boyle River Lodge in the Lewis Pass. Over the 4 days we were away, students completed a series of adventure based learning
From 18th - 21st July 2021, seven of our Year 10-13 students competed as members of the Top of the South (TOSI) team at the New Zealand Area School Sports Tournament in Dunedin. The seven students and the sports they played were as follows. - Abby Taylor - Year 10 in Girls Football. - Earl Cacho - Year 11 in Rugby, Basketball and Football. - Cailey Hollard, Ashleigh Lawler - Year 12 in Netball A. - Ashley Riley - Year 13 in Netball A and Basketball. - Shaugn Kilgour and Alexander Sillars - Year 13 in Football. Abby, Earl, Cailey, Ashleigh L, Ashley R and Alexander all made the South Island teams to play the North Island on the last day of competition. Abby, Earl, Ashleigh L, Shaugn and Alexander all made the NZ teams for their respective sports. Special mention to Ashley Riley who made the NZ teams for both Basketball and Netball. An amazing tournament showcasing the best sporting talent from across our country's various Area Schools. Next year's tournament is to be held in Whangarei so we could all highly recommend that you trial and give yourself a shot at attending. Massive thanks to the parents who travelled with us and for the support shown by our school community over the time we were away. Also to our wonderful Sports Coordinator, Deb Baggot for all of her organisation behind the scenes to get our students to the tournament and through the trials process.
challenges, low and high ropes, rock climbing abseiling, along with leadership skills in the outdoors. They also tramped into the Magdalene Hut on the St James track for a night. The weather was kind to us and we very much enjoyed our time spent as a class working on our outdoor skills such as navigation, decision making, leadership and teamwork. Our skills will be put to the test next term when we tackle a trip to Lake Daniells and Hanmer Forest. Along with the various challenges that every day life throws at us! Outdoor Education makes us all better people, well equipped to deal with life's ups and downs. Thanks team for another great trip :) Mrs Don
Congratulations to Harrison Forgues Harrison Forgues recently competed in the Gymnastics nationals in Auckland. Harrison qualified earlier in the season to represent Canterbury in DMT (double mini trampoline) and put in a lot of training before going up to Auckland where he got 3rd in the U10 men's DMT. Well done Harrison. We look forward to seeing your continuing success for the rest of the year.

the Glentui Kea . words & photos by Anna of Glentui Lodge
The first week of August saw Canterbury become a winter wonderland, and Glentui was no exception. A steady snowfall ensured perfect conditions for snowball fights and sledding, bringing visitors from near and far to our little piece of paradise. One visitor came a little further than most – a kea! After initial disbelief (it cant be a kea, we’re too low down) and worry (is it injured or sick?) we have since learned that he has been in the general area for a few weeks, and his movements are being monitored by the Kea Conservation Trust. According to one source "There has never been a kea located in Glentui before". KEAnu (as we have been calling him, others have named him Glen), has been visiting on an almost daily basis and I have been able to take some amazing pictures of this stunning bird. He has taken quite a liking to a large plastic ball and a shiny paua shell (no surprises there). my favourite op shops ... by Candice Breeze
I am an avid op shopper, and have found my way around many op shops around the Waimakariri District since moving here, so decided to compile a list of my favourite op shops that you should definitely go and check out if you are in the area!
Budget Boutique | Oxford This is one of my all-time favourite local gems. Hidden just off the main street of Oxford, if you blink you’ll miss it. As soon as you walk inside you are greeted by a couple of the friendliest locals you’ll ever meet, who are more than happy to help you around the shop, or let you have a little peek at anything that’s just come in before it gets organised into the shop. They have bins of clothing ranging from 50 cents to $2 and then clothing on racks ranging from $3-$10. What I love most about this place is that they have a rack of clothing that is entirely free, as well as all children’s books and toys are also free. I’ve also picked up some incredible serving platters from the back section at price points that felt like a steal. It’s definitely my favourite place to go to in Oxford.
Theas New & Pre Loved Boutique | Oxford Another hidden gem in Oxford, tucked away behind Challenge is Thea’s New & PreLoved Boutique. Here alongside all the new items, you will find your more upscale pre-loved gems from shoes and scarves to jeans to dresses. I even spied a pair of DKNY boots that I would be wearing right now if they had have been the right size. It’s definitely worth a browse when you are popping through town.
St John Opportunity Shop | Rangiora You absolutely can’t go op shopping in Rangiora without stopping in at St John Opportunity Shop in Rangiora. If you are wanting a place that has a great range of clothing for a great price this is your place to go. They even have a designer and vintage section for those of you who are looking for something a little bit more special than your everyday find! It also has many other items, such as furniture, books, knick knacks, kitchenware and décor!
Done & Dusted | Cust Okay so I can’t talk about op shops without discussing this rare beauty. Unlike the other shops that focus mainly on clothing, Done & Dusted focuses on everything but! This is the place to go for all your vintage décor, homeware, tools, furniture, kitchenware and more. This shop literally oozes vintage. You’ll spend hours looking at every crease and curvature and still feel like you need to look over the entire shop a second time to make sure you haven’t missed anything. I’ve bought so many things from this shop and I can’t drive past it without stopping. So far I have found an incredible mint condition Olivetti typewriter, a beautiful glass butterfly lamp, a deep fryer, some tools and okay there’s a small and I say small clothing rack where I may or may not have bought a few items. This is definitely a must stop place!

OB&I League c el ebrates 100yrs with 10 hr movie extravaganza .
COUNCIL U P DAT E with Councillor Wendy Doody SEPTEMBER 2021
words & photos by Candice Breeze
On Saturday August 14, the OB&I League celebrated their centennial with a 10 hour film festival showing films from various decades. People young and old came out to watch one or more of movies playing throughout the day, with the most popular movie seeming to be the first of the day. A classic – Casablanca. “The most talked about movie was Casablanca, I can see why, it’s a true classic, and a great story,” said Brent Andrews, Projectionist for the OB&I League. Another movie that was popular seeing a round of applause at the end, was Buster Keaton. It was great to see the involvement of the OB&I League volunteers getting into character as ‘Grocers’, as well as all their hard work putting together food stalls, taking tickets, and the projectionist and backroom guys. “We had a great response from the people who attended. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed what they saw. The sheer enjoyment of the movies on offer was clear to see,” said Malcolm Watson, President of the OB&I League. Two of OB&I League’s regulars had two reserved seats at the top in the Town Hall, and watched 6 out of 7 films that were played throughout the day! You can see the pride that the OB&I League hold in what they do, and how they run their events. It is something to be in awe of. A big congratulations to the team and their achievement of 100 years.
An extremely busy 2 Months with the signing off of the Long Term Plan for Waimakariri District Council. This has been a very difficult decision for Councillors to make sure the first of the three year period rates are kept below 5% on average, some areas will vary due to water and sewer rates and other special projects. The opening of Mainpower Stadium – what a fantastic venue for Waimakariri and well supported by ratepayers visiting the venue on opening day well over 4000 came and viewed, many thanks to everyone who helped on the day to make it run smoothly. Unfortunately along came “Covid lockdown” and stifled all the sporting and fitness programmes organised, when we are allowed to open the doors for visitors again make sure you take time and have a good look through the venue including the beautifully landscaped area .It really is a “Show Stopper”
Three Waters Reform – there is much to say about the Government’s Three Water Reform and their misinformation about New Zealand’s water woes in the TV advertisements. As a rate payer you would have received a letter in your mailbox from the Mayor asking you to complete the survey either by mail or online (waimakariri.govt. nz/letstalk) we would appreciate feedback on your thoughts. A number of Councils in the South Island have shown their concern regarding this proposed Three Water Reform including Waimakariri District Council and this is why we had organised drop in sessions around the area but due to Covid this is not to be. Please read the information and make your thoughts known before Sunday 5th September so we can collate the information given by Ratepayers for Governments Ministers and the new national regulator for water services called “Taumata Arowai.” Waimakariri District Proposed Plan goes out for public submissions in September. This is an opportunity for you to submit on the 10 year plan, your submissions will be heard by a panel of 3 Appointed Commissioners and 2 Councillors. (The two Councillors appointed to the hearings panel abstain from decision making associated with the approval to publicly notify the Proposed District Plan and any subsequent briefings or reports related to the Proposed District Plan content.) It may take up to a year to hear all submitters depending on the number and the panel to make sure the determination on how the District Plan fits within the Waimakariri District aspirations and desires for growth and wellbeing of the District in the future. Stay safe and look after one another. Kind Regards Wendy

Matariki c el ebration at oxford play c entre words by Beka Hunt - photos supplied
Any stranger to the Oxford Playcentre would be blown away by the sheer joy that is the annual Matariki family evening. The event was originally postponed due to a wave of winter sickness, but was well suited for August the 15th as there was plenty of sunlight left at 5pm. Stephanie Roberts, the Playcentre president, explained that most families arrived at 4 o’clock, so that the children could play before dinner. A kai potluck then disappeared rapidly as everyone jammed themselves into child sized chairs around tiny tables. Unbeknownst to me, this was a normal seating arrangement which provides an inkling into what separates a playcentre from other Early Childhood Education providers. Open Tuesday through to Friday, 9 til 1, a playcentre is parent led. In Oxford there are two staff members who hold ECE (early childhood education) qualifications that provide valuable skills working alongside the parents to run the show. Each session, parents attend Playcentre with their children and are involved every step of the way. They are well accustomed to miniaturized furniture! Additionally, this creates a welcoming community for new parents who may not have any free time, but still need a space for friendship. In fact, you could tell all attendees were thriving- the noise only dimmed once when the food had been served. Alex Allen, an Oxford local, spoke about his experience in the playcentre. “We suddenly had a kid and no time or money, so someone mentioned it [the playcentre] and now my oldest is 5 years old, so we've been here since then.” Others echoed his enthusiasm, adding that “it’s a big support network” and “it’s a good place for mums and dads to make friends.” All those involved are well aware of the uncommon bond that is formed through watching their tamariki grow- plus it was hard to speak critically when ice cream was being served and marshmallows were toasting on a brazier. In fact, after an informed discussion with the Playcentres younger crowd, toasting marshmallows together with their family and friends was a real star of the evening. The Playcentre had collectively made Matariki arts and crafts a month or so prior, but the evening’s focus was a celebration of community and whanau (followed closely by the marshmallows). Although the brazier is now extinguished and the BBQ is wiped down, the values still remain. The Playcentre sees multiple family evenings each year, and regular excursions. By the time of publishing, they will have visited a farm and learnt the art of pizza making, all while their new playground is being installed. It's enough to make anyone yearn to be young again, or even wish they had a child between the ages of zero and six to enroll- new families are always welcome! You can find more information on their Facebook page (Oxford Playcentre), or on the Oxford page of the official website www.playcentre.org.nz if you have Google handy. They’re always happy to have visitors. From one stranger to another; you’ll be blown away by the family and friendship of Oxford's very own Playcentre.

Ma Dooc ey MP for Waimakariri
Small towns like Oxford know rural mental-health services have to fight harder to get the same resources as cities. I’ve been working hard in this space to help the voices of rural New Zealanders be heard, speaking to residents, community groups, mental-health providers and our Police, who have become de facto responders to mental-health crises. In 2017 the former National government announced a groundbreaking $8 million new health co-response service that would have resulted in mental-health professionals responding to 111 calls. It was gutting when the Labour government scrapped this in 2018. At a meeting I organised with local Police and a constituent, our rural area commander confirmed 21 percent of Canterbury call-outs are related to mental health. As National’s Mental Health Spokesperson and a local MP who is talking to people on the ground, I believe grassroots rural community groups need to be urgently funded to deliver lifesaving mental health and suicide prevention programs on the frontline. Farmers are doing it tough. I was proud to stand with our farmers at the recent Groundswell event in Waimakariri to protest against excessive government regulation. During an on-farm visit with an Oxford farmer last month, I heard firsthand the impact of legislation such as the identification of Significant Natural Areas (SNAs) on our farmers, who face being locked out of managing large swathes of their own land. North Canterbury resident Grace Curtis speaks from the heart about her own lived experience of mental health and the impact on her family of her father’s suicide. I was humbled to stand with her and Jason Herrick of Ag Proud to bring the voices of rural New Zealanders in front of over 800 people in Auckland recently. Grace has used her experience to start a mental-health movement called Cool Change NZ and together we are calling on the government to urgently fund mental health programmes in our rural areas.

As I write this column we are in Level 4. I know this is not where we might have expected to be but it is important that we all play our part and follow the rules to ensure this lockdown is as short as possible. Over this time Council staff, Councillors and I are working remotely to make sure we continue to support our community. We are here to help if needed. Phone 0800965468 or email office@wmk.govt.nz. The Council website will always be up-to-date with the services we can offer at each Alert Level, so head to waimakariri.govt.nz for updates. While we can’t see people outside our bubble we can call or message neighbours, friends and family to keep in touch. We have got through this before and will do so again. Take care.
NEW MAINPOWER STADIUM It was a privilege to officially open MainPower Stadium recently. It was important for the Councillors and me that this opening be for the whole community. Despite the weather on opening day, 4,000 people came through to view this outstanding facility. At 6,000 square metres, people were amazed at the size and quality. There have been many who have contributed significantly to this project and helped us get to the official opening. You know who you are, and a huge thank you for your work in creating this facility. What has been delivered is a stunning multi-use facility that I know our community will be pleased with. There has been huge expectation and excitement. This facility is for all ages but I am especially excited about the benefits it will provide our young people who now have access to high quality sport facilities and activities, but also the wider benefits to our community’s health and wellbeing. Our hope is that this stadium will inspire our next generation of athletes and help our young people have the opportunity to reach their potential as future representatives for Canterbury, New Zealand or indeed become Olympians. No matter what level you achieve at, you will make us proud.
3 WATERS REFORM You might be aware that the Government is proposing changes to the way our drinking-water, stormwater and wastewater services are delivered to residents through a Three Waters Reform process. The Government has given Councils until the end of September to provide feedback on whether we as a District wish to opt-in or opt-out of the proposed reform. Before we make a decision about the next stage of the reform process we are keen to hear what our community thinks. All ratepayers should have received a letter which lays out the best information we know to date regarding the reform proposal. A feedback form was included. You can also provide feedback online: waimakariri.govt.nz/letstalk We had planned a series of community drop-ins to discuss the reform proposals and answer any questions you may have. Unfortunately Level 4 prevents this and these sessions have been cancelled. Your views are important and we strongly encourage you to provide your feedback by 5 September before we make a formal decision on 28 September.
VIC ALLEN Sadly Oxford’s Vic Allen passed away recently. Vic had been a strong advocate for his community - especially Oxford. He loved his community and was passionate about it. He was involved in many organisations and either served as chair or a hardworking committee member. Vic was also a long-serving member of the Oxford-Eyre Ward Advisory Board and oversaw a number of projects to bring them to a successful completion. To acknowledge his remarkable contribution Vic was awarded a Community Service Award. He worked hard to make his community a better place, and achieved that. His contribution was extensive and we are all so much the better for his involvement. On behalf of a grateful community, thank you Vic for your faithful service. Rest in peace.

As I write this, we are again in alert level four. However, I hope when you are reading this, we are in alert level three maybe even two, with light at the end of another lock down. It has been good to see the response from the community, with everyone so far abiding by the rules and keeping to themselves and staying safe. In these changeable and uncertain times, if you do notice your neighbour or someone in the queue who is not doing so well, let someone know or ask them “are you ok”. It can be as simple as that. The weather is getting warmer, and as we head towards spring, it can be somewhat changeable, so please what ever you are doing out there prepare for the conditions. Whether that be if you are out for a walk, or off to work in the car, drive to the conditions. Even if the roads are relatively quiet, this is no reason, speed. Last lock down, speed was a real concern. Last but not least, be kind. It can be a stressful time for some, with juggling kids and working form home. I am speaking from personal experience. Once again, thank you for your time. Stay safe. Feel safe.
I hope you are all coping ok with lock down. There is support out there for financial and mental well-being. A good place to start is the health.govt. nz website, where you will find a lot of helpful information. Txt 1737 for instant mental health support. We have had a steady stream of callouts during the last month. Remember, if you are unwell call your regular health provider for advice, or if required 111 for emergency help. We cover every night between 6pm and 6am, and often are able to attend during the day if there is a crew available. Many people have asked about the supporters scheme membership. In the past our local area committee would collect these, then paid a levy to the national body which the supporters scheme help fund. these levies help run the local ambulance. Now the supporters scheme goes to the national body, and in return, the ambulance and all the running costs including uniforms etc, are now covered by the national body. So although your money isn’t staying locally it is still helping locally. The price of family membership can cover the cost of several trips in an ambulance for anyone in the household. Although cheques are no longer in use, you can still pay your membership at the Rangiora St John Op Shop on the corner of Blackett and Ashley Streets Rangiora, where you will also find some fantastic bargains including tested and tagged electrical equipment. The St John Op shop also accepts donations of good quality furniture, clothing and other goods. The profits are then used by the Waimakariri area committee to support our local St John stations with goods and equipment not funded nationally, and help fund some community events to have St John medical staff attend at a subsidised cost. The ambulance station at Oxford is not manned 24 hours a day. If you require emergency assistance please call 111. Please keep an eye out for your elderly neighbours.
FIRE RESCUE
Keep safe, and stay positive.
July was a busier month for the Brigade with ten calls. We were asked to assist the Cust Brigade at a fire in the roof of a house and a private smoke alarm activation caused by cooking. In our area we were asked to assist St John three times, two private smoke alarm activations, both were false alarms, one to a out of control bonfire, one motor vehicle fire which was badly damaged and one controlled slash fire with the contractor in attendance. No action was required by the brigade. This brings our total calls for the year to forty seven Oxford Chief Fire Officer
This month’s message is; Keep your children safe. Always keep matches and lighters out of reach.
