Volunteer Award >> for local Speedway enthusiast
Words & photo by Shaz Davis Words & photo by Shaz Davis
Oxford local, and long-time Speedway enthusiast, Dave McPherson recently received a volunteer award from Speedway NZ for his commentating efforts, over many years, at Moore Park, the racetrack in West Melton. “Speedway is run by a lot of volunteers, so I’m a bit embarrassed about this award. I’m just the one who makes the noise,” says Dave, adding that the award was totally unexpected and came out of the blue. Dave discovered bike racing at Speedway back in 1962, and he loved it from the moment he saw it. “There are four bikes racing on a dirt track for four laps. We use specialised bikes that are difficult to ride and can only turn left. You’ve got no gears, no brakes and no fear, “ jokes Dave. He raced for a few years, but says his only claim to fame was a single championship win in Otago. He sold his bike to go on honeymoon about 40 years ago. “I’ve got no regrets about the honeymoon, but I do regret selling my bike. It would be worth a lot today,” says Dave. He stayed involved in Speedway for a while, helping out in the pits but drifted away when his family came along. He returned to help as an announcer at the West Melton track in the early 2000s, and has barely missed a race meeting since. At first he was based in an old caravan with a secondhand microphone. Now he works from an announcer’s box with a smart headset. After completing school in Oxford, Dave worked on sheep, beef and cropping farms, before returning to the family dairy farm. He’s been active in the Oxford community in several roles, including being the chair of the Oxford Area School’s board of trustees for 11 years.

He’s the current chairperson of the Pearson Park Advisory Group, quite involved in the Oxford Area Lions and is one of the trustees for the Oxford Community Trust. There is probably more, but Dave decided he had said enough on this. As a youngster Dave always wanted to fly, but was unable to follow his dream to be an agricultural pilot for a few reasons: “My eyesight wasn’t up to standard, I have asthma, and I wasn’t very good at math, so I couldn’t get a commercial licence,” says Dave. He has, however, pursued his dream to fly and owns a microlight plane, which he uses to fly to the Speedway track, if conditions are favourable, and he has flown from Bluff to Cape Reinga. Dave also ran race announcements at Oxford Speedway for about eight years but says car racing isn’t really his thing. That said, he’s pretty excited that his 13-year-old granddaughter has her first mini stock car. It looks like racing is in the family genes, and you’ll likely find Dave at the track supporting stock car racing.

Donation of new Blood Pressure Machine to OCHC Words by Cathy Dee
The Oxford Medical Centre has a new piece of equipment that will make the life of those who have to keep an eye on their blood pressure a whole lot easier. The new machine was generously gifted to the clinic by the Oxford Lions. It is a self-service blood pressure monitor and a height and weight measurer.

“Try it,” urges the nurse after showing it to me. I gingerly insert my arm into a tunnel, up past my elbow, and as the cuff tightens, I suddenly have a feeling I might be about to about to AI something. There is a whirring and almost immediately out spits out a piece of paper containing my blood pressure results. I am instructed to leave them in a box where they will be uploaded onto the patient portal on the Oxford Health Website, under ‘Vitals’. Here one can easily access their results and track any trends, thereby heading off disaster before it occurs. Patients can come in and use the machine free of charge, which is a huge boost for those who need to monitor their blood pressure on a regular basis. Practice Manager Richelle Jorgensen says that with the provision of the self-service machine for patients, it will allow the nurses to spend more time with patients who need help managing chronic health conditions. She stresses that the clinic is extremely community focussed, with an emphasis on working with patients proactively, rather than reactively, and she strongly encourages all patients to be more involved in managing their own healthcare, by accessing the Oxford Community Health Centre patient portal. Richelle says that the Health Centre is extremely grateful for the support of the Oxford Lions. In the past they have been responsible for funding electric treatment beds, syringe drivers, a portable 24 hour blood pressure machine which the patient can use at home, and a diagnostic machine which takes the patient’s blood pressure along with pulse and oxygen levels. Richelle said that the Oxford Lions wished to donate funding from the proceeds of their charity golf tournament to the Health Centre, but unfortunately the tournament was cancelled due to the COVID lockdown. However, the Lions very generously decided that they would donate funds regardless, thus enabling the supply of the new Height/Weight/Blood Pressure Machine which now proudly sits in the waiting room and has been christened with the name of “Andy”. One can’t help feeling that we are very fortunate here in the Oxford district, to have a medical centre that works so hard to deliver such great service to the community. six

Showtime! How to “Wow” Potential Buyers Ever flicked through a magazine or stepped into a showhome and imagined how idyllic it would be to curl up in that sun-soaked lounger beneath the bay window or to wine and dine guests in the spacious outdoor entertainment area? “Oooh, I could imagine myself living here,” is exactly the kind of excitement you want to emote from potential buyers visiting your home. But that doesn’t happen so much if the house is untidy, unclean, in need of repair or even if it is obvious that someone else still lives there. So make your home sparkle. Remove living mess – piles of shoes,
stacks of papers and overflowing linen cupboards. Rent a storage locker for excess furniture. Store away family portraits, knickknacks and souvenirs in an attempt to keep your decor neutral. This helps people to easily imagine moving in with their own possessions; even removing toothbrushes and toiletries from the bathroom just before an open home helps to create an inviting but blank canvas. Do your kitchen and bathroom need renovating? Have a chat to me first. It’s true these areas sell homes but sometimes a “do-up” can be a selling point too; you may be better off selling sooner and allowing the new owners to add their own personal touches.

James Jones >> >> Dog agility handler
Words & photos by Cathy Dee
10-year-old James Jones loves Dog Agility, and it’s easy to see why when you look at the bond that has developed between him and a wee dog named Tara. Tasdale Terra Tara, an Australian Terrier belonging to his Grandmother (Jayne Arscott), is James’s partner on the course. Together they have had an extremely successful season, including proudly representing Cust School at the South Island Primary Schools Agility Competition in July, where James came 2nd and 3rd in the Open Handler. Second place with a dog he’d never met before. The competitors have to draw a dog out of a hat, and 3rd place with Tara. The pair have also competed in Blenheim and Nelson, and are working their way towards competing at the NZ Dog Agility Champs in 2022. I ask James what he loves best about his sport and he replies that although he loves to win, he actually also loves being a part of the club, especially helping set up the courses. He was introduced to Agility by Jayne, who was a keen dog sledder but decided, only 4 years ago that she needed to take up something a little less physical. Now she loves it so much, she says she wished she had taken it up years ago, and clearly being able to share this love with her grandson is an added bonus. If you want to have a huge amount of fun while strengthening your bond with your dog, Agility is a great way to do this. The dogs race around an obstacle course which includes various jumps, tunnels, poles to weave in and out of and an A Frame which, James tells me, is quite possibly Tara’s favourite thing to do, as she races up and stands on the top to admire the view!
• Dozers • Graders • Dump Trucks and Trucks • Rollers • Diggers with Power Clamp • Mole Ploughing • Land Clearing/Development
Tara’s career in Agility has had some hilarious moments, which include joining the rugby club in their dressing room one night and, on another occasion ending up in a nearby bar joining the punters for a drink. “It’s a terrier thing”, laughs Jayne, “and I’m pretty sure anyone who owns a terrier will agree.” James is looking forward to competing with his own dog, a Smithfield/heading cross called Roxy who he is just about to start training in the pre-agility classes at the Waimakariri Dog Training Club. He will also be going to the Junior Dog Training camp held in Woodend in January.

All of this is made all the more special when you learn that for three years, James himself, could not run or jump, due to a hip condition that meant he missed out on a lot of the childhood games and sports that most kids take for granted. James’s mother, Alice Jones, said that agility has helped James hugely and he is now able to run with his dog. As I reverse my car out of the drive a fuzzy head pops up over the fence. It is Roxy bidding me farewell with an enormous Huntaway grin. There is no doubt in my mind that dogs love this sport as much, if not more, than their owners.
The Waimakariri Dog Training club run classes for people and pooches just starting out, through to advanced agility on Wednesday and Tuesday evenings at the Mandeville Sports Centre, and the club would love to encourage more children to join in the fun. James will be competing with Tara at the Waimakariri Dog Training Club Champs on Sept 5th and 6th at the Mandeville Sports Centre - come along and cheer them on!
CNC major work - SH1 traffic delays
The Christchurch Northern Corridor team will have major work on SH1. We will be resurfacing the existing SH1 Waimakariri Bridge lanes. Southbound traffic will merge onto the new lanes in the middle of the bridge while we do this work. To help manage the traffic flows on SH1, the Tram Road on-ramp will be closed over the weekday morning peaks (5.30am - 9.30am) for four weeks from Monday 31 August.
Seven new gantries will be installed over SH1. Starting in early September traffic at night will be reduced to one lane or diverted. Diversion is via Main North Road between Groynes Drive and Ohoka Road. All motorway traffic will be diverted on 30 September. Expect significant delays during the morning peak on the citybound routes and at night during the work.

Oxford Community Trust Update with Manager Jo Ealam
Hello everybody. As I write this I am looking out of my office window at the beautiful spring garden planted by the ladies of Cottage Crafts. Spring is such a lovely time of year and I’m sure everyone is looking forward to the warmer weather to come. Here at the Trust we are adapting to our changing environment due to the pandemic. While things are certainly trying for people, we are often reminded of how lucky we are to live in a community that looks after one another. When there is so much uncertainty it is good to know we have solid support systems where we live, and to have just about everything we need right here in our own town. I am involved in groups in the District and am getting updated regularly on what is available to support people into new employment, and what is available from WINZ, and other agencies out there for people. It is encouraging to see that people are finding new jobs and changing employments, but we recognise that this comes with different pressures and we understand there is a lot of anxiety in the community. For those new to Oxford you will have seen ‘I’ve Got Your Back’ signs up at the entrances to Oxford. The underlying message of this important campaign is one of looking out for one another. “Keep in touch, Look out for each other, That’s what mates are for”. Checking in on someone, inviting them over for a coffee, just being there for someone, can make the world of difference, and is even more important in these times. It is also important to look for things that help you care for yourself at the moment. I know that staying off social media as much as possible, and getting out for walks and fresh air help me to stay focused on what is important, and not get caught up in taking in too much unnecessary information. Families are under pressure which is evident with the client work we do. To support this work, the Trust has brought in some extra workers. Please feel free to reach out if you feel like you need a chat, or need help navigating any other support systems. We have welcomed Ronel Stephens to the Trust as a Migrant Co-ordinator. Ronel says “The pandemic the world is currently dealing with has highlighted a number of issues that migrants are having difficulties with but do not have the know how to deal with. Our social system is also new to these challenges which results in people being turned away rather than being helped. Some resources have been made available but again several migrants are not fitting the criteria to tap into these aids. I am very excited to be put in a position to advocate on behalf of our migrants, especially those who do not have a voice. I have been working closely with members of Immigration, staff at the Office of Ethnic Communities, The Christchurch Migrant Council, and different Ethnic Community Groups. My comprehensive network puts me in a position to better understand the needs of migrants and to find and give support in the right places and under the most appropriate conditions. Anyone in need of advice can contact me at ronel@oxfordtrust.co.nz”.

The Trust is fortunate to have a large pool of volunteers. These volunteers give of their time in many different ways, including medical driving, office work, youth driving mentors and other areas. We so appreciate everything they do to support the Community. The Trust has been involved in the Oxford and Surrounding Areas Health Service Development Group, which has worked to develop a model of care to enhance health services across Oxford. Now this group has moved into the next stage with a Provider Alliance which includes the Oxford Hospital, Oxford Community Health Centre, Oxford Community Trust. An Oxford Community Health Advisory Group has also been established which covers a broad spectrum of views and experiences. This group will be the voice of the community and report back to the Provider Alliance to ensure the consumer voice is heard. Our medical transport is, as always, extremely busy. We have a dedicated group of drivers who will take you into Christchurch, Rangiora or locally to your medical appointments. If you have an appointment that you would like transport to, please give us a call and we can organise a driver for you. Our mini bus trips are up and running again. We have some fun trips planned for September: 11th September - Ohoka market 15th Setember - Rangiora 22nd Surprise location 29th Kaiapoi Library and museum Calling all Christmas lovers!! We are getting excited about running our Christmas Wonderland. Our team is coming together, and if you love all things Christmas and are interested in being part of the event, we would love to hear from you! We have some enthusiastic new youth recreation workers, Kate, Georgia and Grace. ( pictured below) They got together with our local Lions for a hot chip lunch at School and to survey to see what events our young people are wanting. They were so pleased to find a group of youth who are keen to help implement and run events, and they kick started with a Carnival night which included all the treats – candy floss, popcorn and a chocolate fondue. They have some great ideas for events, along with the crowd favourites such as mall trips. Keep an eye on the Oxbox Youth Facebook page for all the details!

If you were to put all our residents living in rural areas like Oxford into one city, they would form the second largest city in the country, numbering around 700,000 people. Together, they contribute 50 percent of New Zealand’s export dollars. That’s a valuable contribution.
Waimak Kids OSCAR Holiday programme The next programme will be running 28th September – 2nd October and the 5th October – 9th October. WINZ subsidies are available for this programme, so if your circumstances have changed workwise it might be a good idea to check if you are eligible. If you would like any more information about this please contact Jane Hinz at jane@oxfordtrustco.nz. The U-Drive programme is a real highlight for the Trust. We have a great group of mentors who are helping young people develop the skills they need to move from their Learner’s to Restricted Licence. If you are interested in going on the programme or becoming a mentor please contact Julia Graham at julia@oxfordtrust.co.nz. Remember we are here if you would like to talk to someone or need some help to access other services, please pop in and see us and we can see what we can do to help.
I’ve often spoken about the value of our rural towns like Oxford, with its agribusinesses and farming community, and the contribution they make in supporting our local economy. So last month I jumped at the opportunity to take part in a panel discussion with the Rural General Practice Network to look at health service provision in our rural areas as a way to support the wellbeing of our rural residents. It was great to get a cross-section of ideas through the panel as to how we as a country can improve access to specialist services in our rural areas where residents are faced with barriers like transport costs and time pressures in accessing specialist appointments, as well as mental health and addiction services. This was a theme also at a virtual forum I participated in to look at community mental health and addiction, with the goal to provide the best support and wellbeing services to our communities. Oxford has a great tradition of community support through initiatives like the I’ve Got Your Back programme and it was great to participate in a wider debate on how we can support the resilience of our rural communities. Last month, I met online with a panel of local business leaders to analyse some of the information that has come through from the interviews with our business owners and operators following my Waimakariri Job Summit. We’re identifying some key themes for our area going forward as we look at ways to increase business confidence in Waimakariri in the aftermath of the pandemic. We need to continue supporting our local businesses as a community. Authorised by Matt Doocey, Level 1, 188 High Street, Rangiora.

Oxford Residents benefit from 24/7 health service Words by Shaz Davis
Picture Framing Photo Editing & Restoration Pictured above - Jason Williams - Nurse Practitioner
Residents of Oxford township and the surrounding rural areas are lucky to benefit from a medical service that provides 24-hour support, seven days a week. The Oxford Community Health Centre is the only General Practice within the Waimakariri district to offer an after-hours service for enrolled patients.
Large Format Printing
“Other practices have stopped their after-hours service because the available funding does not cover the cost of running the service” says Richelle Jorgensen, Business Manager for the Health Centre. The difference is that the Oxford Community Health Centre is run as a charitable trust. The Trust’s board of directors want to retain this service for the community and focus on sourcing funding, which covers part of the after-hours service. The balance of the cost for after-hours care is subsidised from income from the General Practice. Over the years, the after-hours service has expanded to meet the community’s needs, and includes emergency appointments and weekend clinics with either a nurse practitioner or a rural nurse specialist. After-hours calls to the Health Centre go through a triage centre which assesses how urgently a patient needs care. The patient will either be booked into a weekend clinic or, if urgent, the triage centre will call the after-hours practitioner to arrange immediate attention. There is one person on call for the after-hours service, and they cover after-hours care for 111 calls, acute patients, as well as the Oxford Hospital and Karadean rest home, so there will be times when they won’t be immediately available. “Ideally, we would like to get to a position where we have two people on call, but we also need support from the community to manage the caseload. Being a small rural practice we can fill up fast, which makes it hard to deal with urgent stuff. We’d like people to get in touch with us sooner,” says Richelle. “A phone call on Friday at 2pm to say I’ve run out of pills, or a call last-thing on a Friday afternoon to say I’ve had chest pain for six weeks, makes it very difficult to manage resources and provide the right level of care. Ideally the after-hours care should be for emergencies – and accident or the sudden onset of a condition - not something that has been niggling in the background for a few days or weeks. “We try really hard not to pass on costs to patients, but sometimes it is necessary. The funding we receive does not go up every year, but our costs do. And it’s important to remember that any surpluses go towards keeping the after-hours service open.” twelve

Family donates seat to the Ashley Gorge Reserve
Words & photos by Shaz Davis
Part of their research included finding the grandchildren of Mrs Reynolds who had no idea of their link to the history at Ashley Gorge. Robert was about to give up on finding Mrs Reynolds relatives, when someone returned his call from Dunedin and said: “I think you might be looking for me!” The new bench was donated to the reserve by Mrs Reynold’s grandchildren, John Reynolds and Sue Emirali, in appreciation for the work done in uncovering Mrs Reynolds history and reuniting them with their past. Photo - left : Robert and Joanne Judson behind the new bench at the Reynolds Heritage Pavilion at the Ashley Gorge Reserve.
A new seat has been added near the Reynolds Heritage Pavilion at the popular Ashley Gorge picnic spot, in memory a pioneering local, Rose Annie Reynolds. Known locally as Mrs Reynolds, she lived with her children in a small cottage near the site of the current pavilion, and supplied picnic groups with the likes of chocolate, canned goods, cigarettes and bathing costumes. While he was a member of the Ashley Gorge Reserve Advisory Group (AGRAG) Robert Judson, together with his wife Joanne, undertook a lot of research to uncover the history within Ashley Gorge. This included discovering more about Mrs Reynolds and her garden; the remains of which include a tall 90-year-old rhododendron with beautiful pink blooms. Fundraiser benefits Friends of Oxford Hospital Words by Beka Hunt - photo supplied
During the most recent school holidays Marshall Stokes ran a raffle. Not only did he run a raffle, he donated all the profits to The Friends of Oxford Hospital committee. It all started (with a slightly unclear time of origin) in June. Marshall is completing the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award- a system which pushes youth to spend time in their community and persevere in their ambitions. To earn his title of honor, Marshall needed an act of service. A raffle was brought to the table and he secured an entire trailer load of wood as a tempting first prize. The other items up for grab included a coffee machine and an entire sheep. Many of the tickets were sold on Facebook, by the Stokes adept marketing team. However, there was still money to be had, so Marshall chose a day and claimed his spot in front of Fresh Choice. Time flies when you’re having fun, and Marshall spent roughly 5 hours selling his wares. Suffice to say he must have had the time of his life. In the end, it was worth it. Marshall raised a massive total of $1250.40. Every cent was given to The Friends of Oxford Hospital committee. This is an incredible contribution to an area of our community that can sometimes be overshadowed by larger, Nationwide fundraisers. With the money, sunblinds, which will make all the difference can be installed in the Oxford Hospital conservatory. The Friends of Oxford Hospital say that they are extremely grateful to Marshall and wish him all the best for the rest of his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh. They also add “Thankyou to everyone that supported Marshall.” It’s impressive to see what one member of our community can achieve for others. What seems like a small act has an impact on more people than we can imagine. Hopefully youth like Marshall can inspire others to build on the small things and make something extraordinary. The lucky winners of the raffle were: 1st Susie Shore 3rd Amie Burmaz- Nichol
2nd Fergus Sidney 4th Jane Frahm

Kia ora koutou, When I reflect on my own childhood and then compare it to my children's I quickly recognise the number of major events that have occurred recently. It is not lost on us that these events occurring in our world create some unsettling times for young people. These unsettling times can lead to increased anxiety. As educators, we know this anxiety can manifest itself in a number of ways such as hyperactivity, outbursts and withdrawal. At Oxford Area School we are focusing heavily on strengthening relationships and expressing creativity giving students opportunities to express themselves in a variety of ways. We know young people feed off the adults around them and we are all working diligently to keep to routines, remain calm and role model how we respond to situations. It takes a community to raise young people and we are all in this together. On a brighter note, we have recently added to our telescopes in the observatory with a larger 12-inch scope. With two telescopes available it will allow for more time viewing and less time waiting. Now is a great time to check out the night sky with our next open night being the 18th September 2020. Head over to https://oxford.ngawhetu.nz to make your booking. Many thanks to our team of wonderful volunteers with a passion for astronomy. Ngā mihi Mike Hart - Tumuaki / Principal

Kia ora koutou katoa Again our lives have been disrupted by COVID -19. I would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all those in our school community. From students to staff, parents and caregivers, to cleaners and bus drivers. You have all taken this new challenge in your stride. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Lesley Morris who has been a Parent Trustee on the Oxford Area School Board. It was with regret that we recently accepted her resignation from our Board. She has been a very valuable member of the team with a skill set that will be hard to replace. Thank you, Lesley, for the time you have given to the school. We are looking at filling this position on our Board of Trustees and will shortly bring you more information on this. Meanwhile please think seriously about becoming, or talking with someone you believe would make a worthy trustee. Trustees do not have to be parents, or have children at the school they stand for. What they do need is a commitment to children and education and the skills to help our school improve student achievement. Ngā mihi Matt Riley ( BOT Chairperson )

OAS Year 7 and 8 students are participating in the North Canterbury Primary Schools’ Debating Competition this term. In the first round, our team consisting of Aaliyah Williams, Chloe Henderson and Nicholas McKinney competed against Amuri Area School. The moot was ‘That digital technology is making children’s lives better’. Our team had some very convincing arguments. Ethan Ricketts was the adjudicator and was very entertaining. Amuri Area School won this debate but it was very close. Congratulations to Nicholas who was pronounced the 'Best Speaker'.Thanks to Mrs Retallick for being a judge. Our second team of Alexis Graham, Kade Hannah, Izzy Ashby-Daniels and Emily Harrison are going through to the second round and will compete against Ashgrove School. Their moot is ‘That ball sports are better than any other sport’. We wish them well.

ABM - Mt Dobson Alpine trip BY OLLIE GRAHAM AND ASHLEY RILEY.
In early August eight students and two adults headed to Mt Dobson for a week of Alpine experience. On Sunday we travelled down to Raincliff Lodge and set up a Marae style sleeping arrangement where we all camped out in the hall for the night. On Monday we headed up to Mt Dobson ski field where we started our Alpine journey. We started our trek by walking up the mountain learning skills on how to stay safe and walk in an Alpine environment. After a good afternoon up the mountain, we then headed back to the lodge, one person with stitches. On Tuesday we packed fully for our overnight tramp. We started off by learning how crampons worked and then we walked up to base camp using crampons due to the snow being a lot firmer than the day before. We learned skills such as how to self arrest if we were in a risky situation in an Alpine environment.
Years 5-8 Cross Country KENDRA WARD — AUG 4, 2020 Last Wednesday,16 Years 5-8 students represented OAS at the North Canterbury Cross Country at the Rangiora Showgrounds. Students from Years 5-8 opted in to compete in the OAS Cross Country on the 23rd of June. It was pleasing to see so many children giving it their best go and we had some excellent results. Well done to all of those children who challenged themselves in this competition. Thank you very much to the parents and staff who supported this event. As a result, we had 16 students qualify in the Rakahuri Zone to represent OAS on Wednesday 30th July. Congratulations to the following students who did a fantastic job, finishing well and giving it their best shot on a course much hillier than they are used to. Payten Hanham, Sam Froud, Alex McKinney, Xavier Geary, Stella Bourgeois,Titus Smith, Summer Pulley, Paige Wakelin-Noble, Eru Te Awa, Corey Griffiths, Jero Galway, Alice McLauchlan, Nicholas McKinney, Hugo Ebel-Wilson, Charlize Smith & Ella Smith. Thank you very much to Beth Froud, Tash Galway & Janette Griffiths for their support and help at the event. Well done to Paige who came 3rd, Jero who also came 3rd and Nicholas who came 5th in the Rakahuri Zone. They all qualified to compete at the Primary Sports Canterbury Cross Country on the 12th of August at Halswell Quarry.
Next we made a snow mound but unfortunately, the temperature wasn't lower than 0 degrees so we were unable to spend the night in our snow mound. This was still a fun task to do to create a snow mound properly. We found this snow mound would have been a lot warmer than the tents we slept in that night! After setting up our tents for the night we cooked freeze-dried food and soup to keep us warm and full for the night ahead. After a night in the tent, we woke up at 5 am to trek up to the top of Mt Dobson to watch the sunrise. This was challenging but was a great success once we were at the top watching the sunrise and a great view of Mt Cook. On Wednesday we packed up camp and learnt about avalanches and how to survive and save each other if stuck in this situation. We also learnt about transceivers and how these work and keep us safe in an Alpine environment. In the afternoon we headed back down to camp to pack up and head home. This experience was life-changing and filled with lots of skills for the future; maybe even future alpine trips. We had lots of fun learning these skills and pushing ourselves to the limit. A group highlight was watching the sunset and the sense of achievement knowing we had completed a week filled with sweat and tears. Special thanks to Paddy, Jess, Matt and Mrs Don. You guys made this trip worthwhile and we couldn't have done it without you.

UPDATE with Councillor Wendy Doody
SEPTEMBER 2020 Kerbside Recycling: Many residents are doing the right thing, but it only takes one bad bin to contaminate an entire truckload. Since May 179 truckloads have been landfilled because people have been throwing dirty items or rubbish into their yellow bins. This has cost ratepayers an extra $122,700 in dumping fees because it has been too contaminated to be processed for recycling. We need your help to reduce the amount of recycling needlessly going into landfill. Take a careful look at what you are recycling and if in doubt then put it into the rubbish bin. You can ensure the success of our recycling programme by being careful and doing it right to reduce our costs and help our environment. Things to remember: Plastic types 1, 2, and 5. No lids or tops of any kind Clean items before putting into the recycling bin. The Staff will be doing a check on bins across the District from mid September. You will be left a flyer in your letterbox or a tag on your bin. Empower – Job-seeker Help Drop in Sessions: As a follow up with the successful Job Seekers Help workshops, Waimakariri Libraries are now hosting free drop in sessions to help people apply for jobs online, or create/update a resume. Kaiapoi Library: Tuesdays at 11am - Staff have helped people with their CV’s and job applications, and have encouraged job seekers to also explore extra training to assist them in their pursuits in gaining employment. Rangiora Library: Tuesdays 11am - Staff were delighted to hear that one of the participants from the workshops has successfully gained two job interviews as a result of the help she received from the team. Oxford Library: Tuesdays 11am - Staff have encouraged a job seeker to follow their passions and aspire to find their dream job, and they have been encouraged to make a Creative Communities application to kick start their career as an artist. Roading: The Roading Team have set up an additional structure around several significant projects. Two to mention: Flaxton/Fernside intersection: detailed design progressing with no major issues, planning to award by December and construct in January – May 2021 Tram Road Safety improvements Project identified for 20/21 year: Improving the bend at Oxford end. This project will soon be tendered, with construction pre-December. Assessment report will be put before Utilities and Roading Committee in the coming months. Regards Wendy

Oxford’s own Brain Buster Words by Beka Hunt photos supplied
Brain Busters is a brand new TV show that brings together four Kiwi kids to battle it out in a contest of wits. The show consists of four stages in which the year 8-9 contestants are eliminated one by one. This format consists of mega memory, a speciality round, the brain teaser and the obstacle course that bears the name “Brain Buster”an apt name as it is a battleground for the final two contestants. The last player standing, then takes part in a general knowledge quiz and can earn money based on the points that they have accumulated. All this waffle brings me to the real story. Rhys Hollyoake, a year 8 student at Oxford Area school and our very own celebrity. Rhys saw a notice in the school newsletter and, as his family knew a producer of the show, he expressed his interest. A wise choice, as it turns out. First he was sent a test in which he had to answer a number of questions correctly. Once he passed, he was invited to audition in front of representatives of the show, but due to a certain global pandemic, the audition occurred over the video conferencing app, Zoom. Rhys chose two categories to be quizzed on, and then answered questions an entire grade above his curriculum level. After that, due to his charm and intellect, he was in. The episodes were filmed in the Christchurch Whitebait Media studio that churned through five episodes a day. Each contestant was seated in a waiting area, with food, games and an opportunity to eye up the opponent- or to have friendly conversation. We have no way of knowing what was said behind those door. We can only imagine.
Here, the spoilers also begin, so read on at your own risk. Rhys made it to the final two- he made it to the Brain Buster. The last competitive stage is a large obstacle course which includes a memorisation of a code, and a zipline.

Rhys and his competitor were followed by their own personal camera crew of two, with a medic on hand for any injuries. Talking to Rhys, he explained the memorisation section was quite stressful as he had to learn a code, move through the course and remember to press the hash- something they didn’t remind you to do. It was intense to watch, but his competitor managed to pull ahead as Rhys keyed in his hash. At the end of the night, Rhys won second place and went home $100 richer. It was incredible to see someone from Oxford accomplish so much on TV. When I was wrapping up our interview, he told me this; “I felt pretty bad coming second but I look back now and I feel pretty proud about myself because I got to do all that.” You can tell that he was chosen for his wisdom, and you can watch Rhys’s suspenseful episode on the TVNZ website Brain Busters page. He starred in season 1, Episode 28. If you’re ever out and about in Oxford, keep an eye out for our very own celebrity. twenty

Claims, Where the Rubber Meets the Road! with Hank van Keulen So far, we’ve talked a lot about the need for insurance, how it works and the reliance on advice to ensure we get the right cover for our circumstances. But the most important aspect of insurance is the claim. It is indeed what insurance is all about. I’m going to spend some time explaining why the most important part of your insurance is the claim, and the importance of having a broker or adviser in your corner when it comes time to claim… When I first came into the industry a number of years ago (more than I care to remember) I recall attending a conference where the facilitator asked a simple question “what exactly is it that we sell?” There were many answers including “insurance”, “peace of mind”, “risk management”, “transfer of risk” and many more. All were right in some way, but not totally and not exact. His reply, “I put it to you that what we sell is a claim!” He was right. Exact. And complete. One thing, so simple. It is what good advisers use to determine exactly what type of insurance and what product is the right one for each individual client. If we understand what a claim looks like, then we work backwards to determine the right insurance policy. If we don’t know where and when a claim is needed how can we find the right policy? I go back to what I’ve said before, hope for the best but plan for the worst. As advisers in the industry we describe claims as “where the rubber meets the road”. When you, our client, needs to make a claim it is because an unexpected event has occurred that is going to cause us some sort of financial loss. Whether it’s needing surgery for a medical event right through the tragic loss of family member reliant on providing for dependants. Regardless of what’s happened, it’s a traumatic event. Just some are more tragic than others. What you, our claimant, doesn’t want or need is more stress having to deal with a claim. What do I need to do? What is the process? Where do we start? Will they pay? When will they pay? Who will they pay? And so on. More stress. More anxiety. This is where a good personal insurance adviser is worth his (or her) weight in gold. If you have a good adviser, and you trusted him enough to take his advice when putting the policy in place, then the only question you need to ask is “where is his (or her) phone number?”. This is where an adviser’s job is most important. The rubber truly meets the road! There are things the adviser can’t do for you, but he most certainly should be there for you, provide you with advice and guidance in getting the claim process done. Be involved throughout the claim process right up until the claim has been settled. He should be able to tell how everything works, the time frame it’ll take, what to expect and, in the background make sure the claim is settled in a timely manner. Then, in extreme cases where a claim is declined, the adviser should be the one who goes to bat for you. Afterall, it was his advice that you took when putting the policy in place, so, it’s the least he can do. I, on more than one occasion, have had client’s claims declined and have fought for them, and won, without them even knowing. If you don’t have an adviser that’s going to go to bat for you when you need it, or, you’ve had a bun fight with your insurance company, give us a call.

Dopamine Dressing
What does that title even mean? Well it comes from the concept of “Can wearing happy clothes actually make us happier?” I would like to shout from the roof tops and say “Yes, 100% Yes!” This does lead us to think about what happy clothes are, and where can I get some? The funny thing is, that what I call happy clothes, and what you call happy clothes will be two very different things. It doesn’t necessarily mean dressing yourself up in the brightest colour you can find because that will make me ‘happy’. It’s more about you, and the meaning you have for your clothes, more than the clothes themselves. I read in an article about an experiment in which a psychologist had participants wear a garment described as a doctor’s coat, and others an identical garment described as a painter’s coat. Participants wearing what they thought was a doctor’s coat performed better in a task than those who thought they were in a painter’s coat – the influence of clothes! What I find interesting is that these people were told what the garment is. I wonder what they would perform like if they have to come up with their own thoughts as to what the garment was for? This is the opportunity we get with our own wardrobe. Understanding our own personality style is paramount and takes us back to the list of ‘happy clothes’ I have for me, is going to be different to the list for you. So, how can we dress ourselves happy, after realising that the idea of simply putting on a yellow frock isn’t always going to cut it! Finding your North Star is the answer. I developed workshops for women because of the overwhelming evidence that to make it all work you need to know who you are. Your personality style is always going to be the final deciding factor about whether an item of clothing will see the light of day or forever be banished to the back of the wardrobe. It would be fair to say, that this year hasn’t quite rolled out as everyone thought it would, and there have been times when I’m sure we have all found it hard to be ‘happy’. Knowing that your wardrobe is full of ‘happy’ clothes can bring the extra you need, when it’s a little difficult to bring the extra yourself. I’m a full believer that when we feel good on the outside, we are more likely to feel good on the inside, which boosts our attitude and self-confidence, and supplies us with more energy to treat ourselves and others around us better. And let’s face it, a little energy and kindness goes a long way.

The service is still in a trial phase and is designed to help reduce loneliness and isolation for elderly people living by themselves in their home. A dog visit can have a profound effect for the elderly homeowner if they love dogs and no longer have a pet. Dogs love to be patted and talked to and some are also playful and mischievous. Comments expressed by the new clients are very positive. “ I feel so happy again, having a dog in my home” “ I can’t wait for the next visit, can we go walking?” “I now realize how lonely I have been without a pet” If you would like a dog and owner to visit your home

EMERGENCY SERVICES I must say, it has been nice to see the days getting that little but longer, and the sun a little higher in the sky. Winter is behind us, bring on those long hot summer days. However, it has been an eventful year, and I hope when you are reading this article lives are again getting back to normal. But can I please ask that you keep an eye on each other. This time in lock down has been very traumatic on our community. The thought of the unknown can be stressful. If you are having trouble coping, let someone know, it’s never too late and if you just need to touch base, a txt or free call to 1737 is a great first step. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. I am seeing first hand that speed is again becoming an issue. Yes, the roads are nice and straight, we all travel them day in and day out, but let’s watch our speed. Less speed equals less harm. On a different topic, firearms and firearms safety. We are getting lots of reports of gunfire coming from rural sections. As that local area gets developed our neighbours are coming closer. If you are looking at doing some pest control on your property or site with a rifle, alert your neighbours and take the time to think about who may be affected by rounds being fired from your property. Once again, I am seeing a lot of rubbish being dumped in our rivers, let alone all of the stolen vehicles. If you witness someone dumping rubbish take some details and forward them onto Police. Thanks once again for your time. Be safe. Feel safe.

St John Ambulance report with Oxford St John Station Manager
Mel Brooker
We have been steadily busy over the last month and are heading for an overall busy year, with job numbers on the high side. With this ongoing issue of Covid it is important to still see your GP or call for an ambulance if you are unwell. Please don’t leave it till it is too late. If there are any flu like symptoms in the house we need to be told and we will wear appropriate gear for your and our protection. With it being such busy times on farms, calving and lambing are well on the way as well as the rush to get cultivating done. Please remember to have a good look around your vehicle before you move off. It is a good idea to make eye contact with people on the ground so you both know you have been seen. Often accidents on the farm, or anywhere in fact happen when people are tired. I would like to say a HUGE thank you to our wonderful volunteers at the Oxford station who have supported me and help our community, I could not do what I do without our teams support. Thank you. We are always looking for new volunteers so if you would like to join a fantastic team and give back to our special community please phone the station on 033123516. The ambulance station at Oxford is not manned 24 hours a day. If you require emergency assistance please call 111 Look after yourselves and stay safe July was a very quiet month for the Brigade which was quite pleasing. There were only two calls. One to an explosion that was heard in an area, which was caused by youths carelessness with petrol and matches, and one to assist St John. This brings our total calls for the year to forty six.

The Oxford and Surrounding area Health Services Development Group (OSHSDG) provides oversight to health service improvement and sustainability initiatives in oxford and its surrounding region. The group has the mandate to review current service activities for the Oxford and surrounds population with the intention of identifying areas and recommending where improvements can be made in the appropriate use of resources, improved patient outcomes, and/or service levels. KEY MESSAGES o This was the final meeting of the Oxford and Surrounding areas Health Service Development Group. While perhaps some of the 10 areas highlighted in the MOC document seem not to have been completed or visible, there are certainly changes in the pipeline pertaining to many of these which we anticipate being implemented in the coming year. o A final message from this group will be delivered to the Canterbury Clinical Network Alliance Leadership Team. We will note that changes in healthcare provision that may ensue post Covid-19 or after the recommendations of the Health and Disability Review, need to be publicly notified and explained by government/DHB/PHO/CCN to ensure patients and healthcare providers alike are well informed and enabled. o A new Oxford Provider Alliance has been formed, which will be a communication network with the following members. This group will work together to continue to provider integrated care to patients in the Oxford community, and to have a coordinated plan for action in the event of civil defence emergencies. o Oxford Health Centre o Oxford Pharmacy o Oxford Hospital o Oxford Community Trust
o North Canterbury Rehab o Karadean Court o St John Ambulance
o Access Home Support o Plunket o Pegasus Health
o A new Oxford Community Health Advisory Group has been formed. This group will provide community and consumer input into the development of Oxford based health and social services.
