Lock it or lose it!
Motorcycles are fundamentally more vulnerable to theft than most other forms of transport, but they need not be. The use of a good lock will protect a motorcycle against most forms of attack and reduce the theft rate dramatically. Incredibly, motorcycle security experts still believe that well over half of all motorcyclists use no form of physical security other than the steering lock, which itself offers very little resistance to a determined attack. Furthermore, just like an alarm or an immobiliser, the steering lock does not prevent thieves from simply lifting the motorcycle into the back of a van and transporting it to a garage where they can re-mobilise the bike at their leisure. These figures are supported by recent research carried out by Oxford Products Ltd in the UK’s capital London, the UK’s worst theft hotspot. *A survey of 736 bikes revealed just 287 using locks, meaning that 61% of bikes were unsecured! The best advice is simple: Lock it, or lose it!
How to minimise the risk of theft • Buy the best lock you can afford and USE it every time you leave the bike unattended • Alarms can be very effective but they are only really useful when used in conjunction with a lock • Some locks have built-in alarms, negating the need for an expensive alarm to be fitted, as long as the bike has an electronic immobiliser too • When parking your bike, try to avoid using the same parking spot every day • Secure your bike to an immovable object, such as a lamp post or a ground anchor, otherwise it could simply be lifted into a van and whisked away • If you have a garage, always use it and remember to lock the bike and set the alarm • If you do not have a garage, use a bike cover • 80% of bikes are stolen from home, so use a ground anchor in your garage or outside your home to secure your bike • Never leave your lock resting on the ground and always lock it as tightly as possible to your bike – this makes it much more difficult to attack • Maintain your lock – if it stops working, you will not be able to secure your bike. Keep it free from dirt and oil the moving parts regularly. Water dispersants such as WD-40 are good for cleaning out the lock barrel, but are corrosive if left to dry and do not provide lubrication in the same way as a regular 3-in-1 oil.

Lock Quality Standards The facts about theft Motorcycle theft remains a growing problem, both in the UK and abroad. Every year more motorcycles are stolen, more motorcyclists are disappointed and inconvenienced and even more is spent on anti-theft insurance policies.
OXFORD
• It takes approximately 12 seconds to steal an unprotected motorcycle • A motorcycle is stolen on average every 14 minutes • Approximately 100 motorcycles are stolen every day • Less than 14% of stolen motorcycles are recovered • Theft accounts for one third of insurance claims

Always secure your bike with the lock positioned off the ground
Advice According to Police statistics, 50% of bikes are stolen by the opportunist or “Joy-rider”. Incredibly, they also estimate that 50% of riders do not lock their machines. Reduce the risk of theft by following these simple steps; • Buy the best lock you can afford and always use it • Alarms can be very effective but they are only really effective used with a lock • If you have a garage, always use it and remember to lock the bike and set the alarm - otherwise cover your bike when outside • When parking your bike try to avoid using the same parking spot every day and lock your bike to a secure immovable object • Never leave your lock resting on the ground and always lock it as tight to your bike as possible - this makes it much more difficult for thieves to attack • Remember to maintain your lock. Keep it free from dirt, and oil moving parts regularly. If your lock stops working, you won’t be able to lock your bike

The shed is your sanctuary – and your bike’s. Wooden construction and distance from the house may mean it’s more vulnerable than a brick-built garage, but it can still be a secure place if prepared correctly. More than anything, it has the great advantage of being off the street, away from prying eyes. A few hours’ DIY can transform the humble garden spider-shelter into a thiefproof vault for your pride and joy.
Illumination ➝ A light that shines on the shed door makes it harder for dirty deeds to be done under cover of darkness. A security light above the door is the best bet, but a motion-sensitive light on the corner of the house, pointing at the shed, should also do the trick. You’ll have to adjust the sensitivity to stop it coming on every time a hedgehog sneezes in your garden, but just having a light that flicks on as someone walks towards the shed could do the trick. Will also be handy when you realise you left your wallet in there after a ride.
Chain it up ➝ In a shed you can use a slightly longer or heavier duty chain than you would on the street, as you don’t have to take it with you when you ride off. Wooden floors and walls make lousy anvils for smashing chains, but still try to ensure the chain doesn’t rest on the floor. Park the bike in tight to the shed wall with the steering lock on. Try to pass the chain through the frame or swingarm as well as through the wheel (though it’s better to secure just a wheel than not bother fitting the chain at all) with the lock accessible only by leaning over the seat. This will make it almost impossible for a thief to attack the chain. An additional disc lock on the front wheel may add further peace of mind.
See page 11 for Chain Lockss

MOTORCYCLE ALARMS
Conceal it Cover the shed window! ➝ The recent rise in shed thefts is largely down to opportunists looking through windows and spotting valuable mowers, barbecues and tools. However, if nobody straying into your garden can see the bike in the shed, there’s no reason for them to return to break in. We wouldn’t use a motorcycle cover for camouflage purposes. An old soft sheet or tablecloth is more than adequate. The best disguise is undoubtedly the paint-spattered dust-sheet – as long as the underside is completely clean so it doesn’t chafe or scratch the paintwork. It won’t even hint that there’s a bike beneath it.
See page 7 for Covers over ov erss er
Secure the door ➝ This is critical. Bars orr grilles on windows can help keep thieves out, but the door is crucial because if they can’t get the bike out through there, there’s no point breaking in through the window. Yes, a shed is vulnerable to anyone with a wood saw, but that shows a greater level of commitment than most bike thieves are likely to have. So the door is the thing. A simple hasp secured with a padlock is too likely to yield to the crowbar, whereas a solid door bar fixed at both ends will present much more of a problem. It needs to be sturdy, reinforced on the inside, impossible to remove from the outside, and quick and easy for you to use, otherwise you might not always bother.
Fit an anchor ➝ You need a solid point to which the bike can be fixed. Ground anchors can be fitted in sheds – though it’s tricky as you’ll need to cut out a section of the floor and dig down to set it in concrete (unless you’re having a floor poured ahead of time, in which case you can get an anchor concreted-in before the shed is built).
See page 19 for Ground Anchors
Having an alarm fitted makes a vast amount of sense, not only because it should reduce your insurance premium, but also because it may ggenuinely help make your bike bik secure. Look for fo an alarm/ immob immobiliser as the most secure option, o as even if the alar alarm is disengaged the bike can’t be ridden away w without the immob immobiliser being overcom overcome. The ffob should use a random random-code, anti-scan system so it can’t be cloned and the alarm unit should have an internal battery, so it can keep going off when tampered with even if its connection to the bike’s battery is severed. Alarms are best fitted beneath the tank or inside the fairing, where they’ll be hard to reach (not to mention protected from the elements). If you’re storing a bike with an alarm, it’s best to hook it up to a trickle charger (see oxprod.com) to avoid draining the bike’s battery – though this may mean you need to run power to the shed. Fobs are best kept separately to the key, so they’re not exposed to the elements, and fob batteries should be changed at the first sign that they’re losing their charge.

Parking overnight on the street when you’re visiting someone for the evening is one thing – the bike’s not there for long, so you’d have to be unlucky for it to draw the attention of criminals (still use a lock of course!). If you don’t have a shed or garage and your bike lives on the street, that’s another. Yours is the most vulnerable bike. Ideally you’ll be able to set an anchor in a front yard, but failing that, you need discipline – and good locks. Two extra minutes spent securing the bike when you get off can make all the difference between leaving it safe or leaving it ready for the thieves to lift.
➝ Concealment is a key defence: is that a knackered scooter under the cover or an exotic Italian superbike? A tatty cover is better than a clean one in this regard, though it still needs to protect the bike from prying eyes – and will protect it from the elements. Bonus! Any cover needs to fit securely over the bike so it can’t blow off on windy nights, good covers have outer bike straps. It should be waterproof and sufficiently heat-resistant so it doesn’t melt on a still-hot exhaust.t.
See page e7 for Covers ers rs
Illumination ➝ Don’t leave your bike in the dark part between streetlights. Park it next to a lamppost. Theft is often carried out in the dead of night, with nobody watching. Simply making sure the bike is visible makes it more secure at night.
Chain it up ➝ Chain the back of the bike to something solid. The chain should not rest on the floor, as then it’s vulnerable to attack from a sledgehammer. Wrap it round a lamppost, as that will be hollow and will ring like a bell if struck – something no thief will want. Ideally, the chain should pass through the rear wheel and around the swingarm – wheels on their own may be removed. Chains should be transported on the bike – not in a rucksack or carried over your shoulder, as they’d injure you if you crashed.
See page 11 for Chain Locks

Put on a disc lock
Be unpredictable
➝ Yes, as well as a big chain. The back may be locked up, but securing the front wheel as well doubles the difficulty thieves would have in moving the bike, so putting a disc lock on is 40 seconds well spent. To make the disc lock as hard for thieves to get at as you can, fit it close to the bottom of the caliper on the left-hand (sidestand) side of the bike, then turn the bars and put the steering lock on. A disc lock with an alarm can be a useful deterrent as it will shriek if it’s tampered with.
➝ The temptation is always to park as close to your own front door as you can, so you can keep an eye on the bike. Which is good – as long as it really is that close. However, if you have to leave the bike more than a hundred feet or so from your front room, it can help to vary where you park. If your bike’s always in the same place, thieves will know where to find it. Moving between locations may help the bike go unnoticed for longer, which is important when it’s not directly under your watchful eye.
See page 13 for Disc Locks
7
PARKING ON THE PAVEMENTS This is a tricky one. The best place to secure a bike on the street is a lamppost. It can be possible to park on the road and get the chain from the back wheel to a lamppost, but not often. That means putting the bike on the pavement, which can be contentious. There are only a few areas of the country where local bylaws actually prohibit any parking on the pavement. However, paveme councils are obliged local co to keep them free from obstruction and so might obstruc the wardens round send th to give you a ticket. To have any an hope of avoiding this, you have avoidin to ensure ensu that the bike doesn’t block the pavement. Every time paveme you park, par imagine a mother with a pushchair and make ma sure you leave enough space for one of those tto get past easily. The reality is that if you’re pparked overnight, for one night only, you’re safe ground on relatively relat chances are you’ll be – chanc gone bbefore the traffic wardens start work and warden anyway, even if you’re anyway not, a pparking ticket is cheaper than the excess cheape on your you insurance if the If the bike is stolen. s council is determined to nail you for parking on a lot, they the pavement pav could ssend the police you. It’s a grey area after yo but you could perhaps prosecution for the face pro offences of willful offence obstruction of the obstruc highway (under the highwa Highways Act, 1980), or Highwa unnecessary obstruction. unnece

Get an alarm
Solid, secure and impregnable – that’s the impression the garage gives, which is why keeping your bike in one reduces your premium. However, the impression is not always the same as the truth and keeping your bike safe in the garage involves more than pulling the door down and walking away. The advantages of the garage are huge, though – the construction is tough and it will almost always have mains power. Much of the advice relating to garages mirrors that for sheds – and again, it takes only few small steps to make the garage supremely secure.
Secure the door If they can’t get the door open, they can’t get the bike out – so the door is your first line of defence. Sadly, the up-and-over garage door is best described as one huge weak spot, so toughening that up is the first step. There are various systems that can be used to make them harder to open – the two crucial things to remember are that you don’t want anything so complex you don’t use it and it shouldn’t scream “there’s something massively valuable in here”. A simple single-point door bar is ample.
8
If your house has an alarm system fitted, it may be possible to extend the system to cover the garage, or get a secondary, separate alarm for the garage alongside the main system for the house (so the alarm on the garage can be armed while the house system is off because you’re in there). You can also fit auxiliary intruder alarms to run off either batteries or mains power. These will sound an alert if they detect someone moving about in the garage – they’re not so sensitive spiders will set them off. Sophisticated ones may even text your mobile or detect sudden rises in temperature
THE HORROR STORIES
lllumination As ever, darkness is the thief’s friend so shining light on their work is a huge deterrent. With a garage, it’s easy to fit a motion-sensitive security light directly above the door (this will also help you when you’re fumbling for the keys at night). A more radical approach is to also have a motion-sensitive light in the garage, making it harder for thieves to work inside in darkness after the external light switches off. Fitting a light is the kind of thing that used to be regarded as a basic DIY job, though if you’re thinking of selling your house you may require the services of an electrician for the sake of your home-buyer’s report.
Chain it up As with the shed, park the bike close to the wall with the steering lock on. Try to pass the chain through the wheel and swingarm, with the lock fastened between wall and bike. You may need a longer (1.6m-1.8m) chain to do this, but that’s practical in a garage. Make sure the chain is sheathed, to avoid it chipping or scratching the bike. Using a bungee to pull the chain past warm exhaust pipes can help avoid burnt wrists. If you can only pass the chain through the rear wheel, that’s still better than not chaining the bike up at all. An extra disc lock on the front wheel adds more bother for any thieves who have got this far. WE USE: Oxford Hardcore (£69.99)
See page 19 for Ground Anchors
Fit an anchor It’s essential to have a sold point to chain the bike to. Concrete floors make great surfaces for thieves to smash chains on, so it’s important to site the anchor where you can park the bike without giving hammer-swinging villains access to the chain – so that’s by a wall. Before you fit the thing, check your chain will go round the bike and the anchor in its proposed site, as it’s not something you can move afterwards. WE USE: Oxford Rotaforce Ground Anchor (£69.99)

All the security in the world sometimes won’t be enough. All the measures outlined here are designed to make it more trouble than it’s worth for opportunistic and keen amateur bike thieves to take your pride and joy. The real hardened criminals won’t be stopped by them, because they won’t attack the security – they may attack you instead. The quickest way for the professional bike thief to overcome a lot of security is with the keys. This means their target isn’t the garage, it’s the house – to get the garage keys, the padlock keys and the bike keys. In terms of your personal safety, no bike is worth you or your family getting attacked. If the keys aren’t hidden, you will be a lot safer – as any criminal going this far is not going to be gentle if they can’t find what they need. It’s not uncommon for victims of theft to wake and find a brick beside the bed. Why? Because in the night, as one member of the gang was looking for the keys and taking the bikes, another was standing by the bed, brick in hand, in case the owner woke up.
OXFORD
Which lock to choose? Chain Lock The most popular form of security device, because they offer the best combination of strength and flexibility. The toughest chain locks are almost impossible to breach, while they allow you to lock your bike to something immovable like a lamp post or a ground anchor. Chains come in many different sizes and lengths:• 1.5 metres is the most popular length – long enough to wrap around something substantial, short enough to curl up under the seat or in a small bag • Links can vary from a puny 6mm to an almighty 16mm in diameter. • General rule of thumb used to “the more material to cut through, the more secure it will be” and, all things being equal, this is true. • However, the material from which the links are made is usually more important than how thick it is. A high quality 10mm chain link which has been treated correctly will be far stronger than a 16mm chain link which is made from soft, low grade steel with the incorrect treatment. • Independent test houses such as Thatcham and Sold Secure will give you the best indication of a chain’s strength. Look out for their logos on the product. • Remember to always keep your chain off the floor and tightly locked to your bike. All the above is also true of the padlock; a chain is only as good as the padlock which secures it – and vice versa. Some chains come with an integral lock for convenience and some with a disc-lock for the padlock giving you the best of both world’s!!.
U Lock Can be incredibly strong, as there are so few moving parts and the shackles can be up to 16mm in diameter. Limited in use, however, as their dimensions mean that it is difficult to lock the bike to an immovable object, other than through a wheel. Some fit neatly under the seat; check your bike for suitability.
Cable Lock Useful lightweight security for less valuable two-wheelers or for those on a tight budget. Significantly less secure than the best chain locks and probably better suited to locking up your bicycle or your accessories. GENERAL RULE: the more material (i.e. thickness) equals more strength. Any lock is better than no lock.
Armoured Cable Lock Great, flexible and lightweight compromise between a chain lock and a cable lock. The cable is protected from attack by a layer of steel rollers or ‘cups’. The best ones are cleverly designed so that they can even pass independent attack tests and they are prized for their convenience and lack of a clumsy, separate padlock.
Disc Lock Very popular due to their compact size and portability, they represent a good visual deterrent to the casual thief. Use a reminder cable to let potential thieves instantly see you have a lock secured and also to act as a reminder to you!, the cable runs from the disc-lock to the handlebars. There is a huge choice of different shapes, colours, sizes and types available, but their basic job is they immobilise the front wheel and prevent your bike from being ridden or just wheeled away. Bikes secured with only a disc lock can still be lifted into the back of a van, but if you buy one with a movement sensor alarm then your chances of your bike being avoided are all the greater. For higher levels of resistance to attack, look out for the Thatcham or Sold Secure logos.
Ground Anchor For maximum security, it is essential to lock your bike down to an immovable object; otherwise serious thieves will simply lift the bike into the back of a van and be gone in seconds. Ground anchors come in all shapes and sizes (check that your lock will pass though the hole provided) but their aim is simply to provide that immovable object. Every garage, every work place and every bike park should have one for every bike. Thatcham and Sold Secure provide a clear indication about the security levels of the different systems available; then all you need to do is decide which one is the most convenient for you. GENERAL RULE: Use some form of external locking device as this will deter the opportunist thief. Use the best you can afford to deter the professional thief. OXFORD Security Advice 1a 10

OXFORD Security Advice 1a
