Psalm 84:5-7 is full of the importance of keeping moving with God. This is vital for individuals and for whole communities of God’s people. Terah, Abraham’s father, stopped moving and settled when he arrived in Haran: he got stuck, and where he settled, he died. That’s a principle in our life with God; if we stop moving, when God wants us to keep moving, we die internally and spiritually,

because we have stopped reaching out in faith. The Israelites had to keep following the pillar of cloud during the day, and the pillar of fire at night, in order to keep pursuing the road that God was marking out for them. When the cloud or the fire moved, they had to up sticks, break camp, and move.
picture was the cry that used to be shouted in railway stations years ago. A train comes in, and everyone who isn’t stopping at the terminus, but wants to get somewhere else, has to change on to a new train. Nothing wrong with the old train, but it’s just not going where you need to go!
There is something in all of us that likes to settle. It gives us security, comfort, peace – and as we get older, change and movement gets harder. But if the choice is moving or dying, we must move!
OCC PROPHETIC VISION A few years’ ago, at one of our OCC leaders’ retreats, God spoke loud and clear to us prophetically, that our future was not in being one area church, but in seeking to build in three regional church groupings. There is nothing wrong with the “one area church”. God just wanted to take us in a new direction, with three new groupings, three new ministry teams (after the style of the former OCC apostolic ministries’ team) and clearer co-ordinated strategies for each group of churches. There would still be a sense of being one Oxfordshire family, since we come from the same roots, genes and spiritual fatherhood, but there would be a greater regional release of vision.

When the church started to move out, in the story told in the Acts of the Apostles, it is encouraging to find the apostles responding with a fluid strategy to the leadership of the Holy Spirit. This is true of the mission to Samaria, or the gentile mission which started in the house of Cornelius, or the mission undertaken by Paul and his apostolic friends. They were following the cloud, as much as the Israelites of the Old Testament story.
TIME FOR COMMISSIONING We have not wanted to rush. We have wanted to build well, finding a new sense of life and mission, and not just rearranging things structurally. All change needs to flow from a new sense of wanting to touch lost people around us, see them saved, and built into Christ’s church. But we believe that the time has come to properly commission what we believe God is putting in place, not just living with the rather informal arrangement we have been following over the last few years. For my part, as a spiritual father in the OCC family, I want to get right behind all these

changes, which I believe have been initiated by God, and are his plan for our future. So there is an authority I need to hand to others, which clearly demonstrates that they are released to do the job. Equally, there is a commission that these regional leaders (Centre, Steve and Bev Jones, South, Neil and Dee Townsend, and West, Gary and Jackie Pizzey) and their teams need to hear and respond to enthusiastically and wholeheartedly in front of us all, so that we can pray for the anointing of God on them. I will still, of course, be a spiritual father, and will be received apostolically into these settings, but each team will have clear government and leadership of their own regional strategy and vision. So at our September celebration, I will be preaching further about this process and trying to envision and stir faith for these changes. At our November celebration, when Mark Mumford, who leads the Salt & Light UK team, will be speaking, we will commission each of these regional teams and their leaders, and pray for a great outpouring of God’s anointing on them! relationship within the new groupings, South (Abingdon, Didcot, Henley and Wantage – and sometimes The Leys), Centre and North (Banbury, Bicester, Kidlington, Oxford and Thame – and sometimes The Leys), and West (Carterton, Chipping Norton, Morton-inMarsh, Cote, Wychwoods, and the two Witney congregations. Leadership and ministry teams are starting to emerge, and fresh vision is also coming to the fore, and our new regional celebrations have been refreshing and breathed new life into fellowship and worship together.

MEET THE BETTS
We are the Betts family! My beautiful wife Anna and I have four brilliant children; Bethany 21, Jordan 19, Olivia 16 and Jack-Elijah 10. I am originally from Kent and became a Christian at the age of 12. At 22 years old I clearly heard God calling me to ‘Innovate’, and out of this I moved to Walsall in 1990 where I have lived and worked for the last 21 years. Anna is from Walsall - she was brought up in a Christian home and became a Christian at five years old. We have both been working at Walsall Street Teams which is a charity linked to Walsall Community Church and supports some of the most vulnerable young people across the borough around issues such as sexual exploitation and anti-social behaviour. This can be very challenging work but also rewarding.
MEET EMILY STURGESS
Hailing originally from Community Church Northampton, I’ve just finished three (wonderful) years doing a degree in Biological Sciences at Jesus College, Oxford. During that time I enjoyed getting involved with the student work here in the Oxford church. Now my degree is finished, I’m settling into my new roles in the area office as the Assistant Area Administrator, taking over from Eve Swanevelder; and the Assistant Oxford Administrator, working with Andrew. The administrator in me really likes To-Do lists ... so I’m hoping everything will run smoothly!
Harland leading WCC was coming to a close and that He had something new for my family. Increasingly we have felt that the summer of 2011 would be a summer of change for us but without knowing what that might be!!! God does seem to have a way of doing more behind our backs than in front of our face! We felt we needed to be obedient to these promptings and keep praying until he opened the right door. So for the past 2 years we have been praying and seeking what God desires us to do next. In November 2010 Richard Colbrook asked if I would consider leading the church on The Leys. Over the next couple of months as a family we were praying and felt that we should go ahead with the process of moving, and if God wanted to close the door then he would. He has clearly spoken to us as a family in many different and varied ways that this is what he wants for us and the church on The Leys. We are really excited to see what God has in store for the church family in The Leys and where God takes us in a new stage of our adventure with Him. Love Chipper & Anna

Hi, I have a long association with The King’s Centre as I was a member of Oxford church when we used to meet in the cinema and saw The King’s Centre come into being. God has provided an amazing resource for our churches and community. It is exciting to play my part in the purposes of God for this place at this time as the new Centre Manager (Anna pearson has left to do a PGCE). It is a huge task but as Steve T reminded us at a recent prayer meeting none of us are equipped to do what God has called us to do in our own strength - that is certainly true for me.
07| MEET SOME NEW PEOPLE
Over recent years we have had the privilege of seeing young people equipped at our National Salt & Light family camps in which Anna and I have been responsible for organising the youth. God has encountered your senior school aged sons and daughters powerfully. We have seen people healed, set free, prophesying, worshipping and giving their all to Jesus. It has been a pleasure to see God encounter the young people over the past 5 years, now we feel God is calling us into a new part of our adventure with him, so this summer was our last year leading the youth tent. More locally, Anna, I and the team set up a youth event called urban spirit. Originally, these were meetings with great speakers, a brilliant live band, with LOUD music and let’s not forget the pizza. Over the years as a team we have felt that we need other churches around Walsall to become involved in the running of Urban Spirit as their youth come to the event - how much more will God do when the churches in an area unite and work together! Excitingly this has happened with a number of churches in Walsall now running Urban Spirit. Now it has become more than just a quarterly youth event, but a movement seeking to encounter all 27,000 young people with the message of Jesus in Walsall. Two years ago I clearly heard God say to me that my time supporting Mark

If you’re a new student, welcome! We hope that you are excited to be at university here and that you’ll love Oxford as much as we do. The student-work at OCC is led by Dave, Claire and Sanjay. Dave first started studying Engineering a whole nine years ago and is about to finally stop being a student this autumn! Claire has just finished a year of volunteering for the church, where she learned she quite likes working with students and drinking tea. Sanjay is a fourth year at St Catherine’s College, and has just returned from a year in Paris, via Momentum, so some of you may have already met him there. Come and say hi to us after the service! A key aspect of what’s on for students is Fusion Groups, which meet one evening a week. These groups of 4-10 students build up great friendships as they support one another’s spiritual growth, and they also look at how to bring God’s love to this beautiful city. One group runs Alpha Courses specially tailored for students; another ventures onto the streets for some prophetic evangelism or ‘treasure hunting’. We’ve also had busking, charity events, giveaways of free cake and tea outside the libraries, and breakfasts at the homeless shelter. The important thing is that we take the people and issues we care
about, and use that God-given passion to make a difference in Oxford and see more students come to know Jesus. So if you have a new idea of how you’d like to transform your university, we are up for seeing if we can make it happen! Discipleship is also important to us, and we make sure that anyone who wants to can have a Personal Pastor. This is someone older in the church who will meet up with you, get to know you, listen, offer advice, hold you accountable for how you live, and pray with you. As a student away from family for the first time, this can be particularly valuable in providing a wise perspective on the studentworld. Hello, I’m Ruth Morton. Having grown up in Lille, I came to Oxford in 2006 to read German and Arabic, where I quickly settled in OCC. After my degree, I went to join John and Nom Bilson in Créteil, Paris, where they lead a church plant. I spent a wonderful year doing ‘Projet Transformation’ (based on OCC’s Year Team) but felt called back to Oxford. I now work in the Salt & Light offices as the new Administrative Assistant to Oliver Russell (Operations & Communications Manager) and Executive Assistant to Steve Thomas.

Celebrate Recovery is a place to explore and celebrate our achievements whilst working with God on things that we are not so proud about. There were a few things in my life that I wasn’t able to deal with, including low self image. Some life events had left me broken but needed more help than just ‘praying it through’ with God to deal with things. The weekly CR evenings always began with worship, which was a useful time of quiet and reflection in a busy life. Working through thoughts, feelings and circumstances with God and others helped me to gain a much healthier attitude. Working through forgiveness was particularly useful. I realised that if I choose not to forgive then it’s me that loses out most. CR helped by providing a framework to deal with issues and reflect more objectively on how to respond. Now I am more enthusiastic about God and church and less worried about the future. It’s easier to be more positive and make decisions. I’m working on communicating my needs more and I have the confidence to challenge things head on. People have commented at work, ‘You look so much more relaxed and happy’. CR was a worthwhile year because it clearly helped me to work through issues. It is a very supportive ‘grace-ful’ environment and I hadn’t noticed how many things are changing and getting better.

Before doing Celebrate Recovery I was very depressed, weighed down by misery, rejection, loneliness and hurts from family members. I couldn’t say “No” to anyone, and gave to people through a sense of obligation and guilt. Inside I was completely empty and constantly lost my temper. For my whole adult life I had struggled with an eating disorder which had become completely unmanageable. All my life I had felt I was stupid (even with an Oxford 1st class honours degree). A few years ago I had lost 2 babies during pregnancy, but I had never fully grieved for them and still felt enormous pain. The diagnosis of MS also hung over me. I could not see a bright future ahead. With the help of my sponsor I began to deal the hurts, realising that they had not all been my fault but in some cases I was the victim. Unpicking family relationships brought understanding of why my father was distant during my later childhood. Finding a different perspective helped me to forgive and pray blessing on those who had hurt me. Although progress felt slow, now 10 months on I realise that God has done an amazing transformation in me. I see myself more as God sees me and have a God-confidence. I like myself much more and am looking after myself better. I am spending more time worshipping God and reading His word. Praying about what to do means that I find the grace and time to carry the things out. My spiritual tank is no longer empty and I have more to give others. Rough days are now much fewer and more infrequent rather than constant, and I am much less depressed. I have more grace for my children and have more fun with them. I no longer beat myself up when things are not “perfect”. The main thing I discovered through CR is that God is not looking for perfection: he just wants progress. I feel now there is a future for me.

The course was a tipping point for my life and Christian walk. I was saved 12 years ago, having been an atheist for 40 years, but in truth it didn’t make much difference: life before Christ was all about me and life after Christ was all about me. I came to realise that my problem was pride. Pride is focusing on my circumstances and trying to change my circumstances, instead of focusing on the Lord.
She says, “The weeks when we looked at forgiveness hit me like a ton of bricks and were very hard to deal with, but this was all part of the process. I came to realise that I had a sizeable list of people and associated events loaded with unforgiveness and bitterness. I needed God to help me deal with them. At the top of my list were two people. Initially I felt that forgiving them was not an option. The first was a friend who had betrayed me badly 8 years previously and cut me off from the rest of my friends. The other was my Dad who had emotionally rejected me for all my life, preferring my sister. At the start of CR, I had not seen my Dad for 3 years since he had refused to come to my wedding. I understood the concept of forgiveness and why I needed to do it but it felt like a step too far. People say that forgiveness is a choice: you decide to do it and then it’s finished. I had tried that several times but found that I still held onto bitterness and resentment; I could not forgive from the heart. I needed to become “willing to be willing” to forgive and allow God to do the rest. I was able to write a letter to my friend, admitting what I contributed to the issues (for me, an important part of moving towards true forgiveness), explaining the
CR changed my focus as I realised that I need to forgive and move on. Now I pray not for God to change my circumstances but for God to use my circumstances for good. Through CR, the old has been cleared out so God can bring in the new. I now finally feel like a new creation, saved by mercy and living in Grace, by faith.
hurt I felt, and stressing that I expected nothing in return. To my great surprise and joy she responded, thanking me for my honesty and apologising herself. I have been able to spend time with her without bad feeling and to rekindle friendships with old friends. By the end of CR I had still not made contact with my Dad. Having learnt how to forgive I felt my heart was at least postured in the right direction. Despite living only 2 miles away from him I hadn’t ever bumped into him 3 years. In the month after CR I ran into him in the street and exchanged a brief and awkward “Hello”. A month later I ran into him again. This time he approached me and we had an emotional reunion; he apologised and expressed his desire to rekindle our relationship. I believe that God arranged these events and timing; if we had made contact before I would not have been prepared to forgive and move on. CR has given me many skills to move forward and to ensure I don’t end up with another ‘backlog’.

Tabitha is a thirty-something mum who had had a complicated life. She had been seeing counsellors since the age of 10 and on and off anti-depressants since the age of 14. Until doing Celebrate Recovery she had not approached her issues from a Christ-centred perspective.
I had no idea just how many people I needed to forgive, but more importantly, how many people I had offended, treated badly or had ungodly soul ties with. I needed to make amends to these folk. I hadn’t realised these things were holding me back.

SHEEP CRAZY! KIDS CAMP 2011
We had a fantastic time at Kids Camp at the end of August. The weekend was packed with activities from building shelters to sweet making and no one will forget the ‘Bush Tucker Trial’. We had a messy game of doughnut netball and egg throwing followed by an impressive bonfire. Then there were our Australian guests – Bruce and Logan – the slightly mad sheep shearers who will be remembered in Annetta’s song, ‘Bruce Shepherd Sheep Dance’.
Our theme focused on sheep: We all like sheep have gone our own ways BUT God wants us to obey for our own good so that we will follow Him and live with Him in heaven. TRANSFORM 2011
“One of the best weeks of my life.”That’s how one of our young people described the Transform Summer Camp where he and 3 others became Christians. Since then he’s talked about how he feels different, how he’s enjoying life more and how he’s reading his first Bible (bought at the camp). Another young person, when asked what the highlight of the week had been, replied, “Oh that’s easy, becoming a Christian of course!”. A third young person described their experience like this, “God spoke to me through a prophetic picture. I saw an old building half complete but still structurally strong. I felt like God was saying to me, “This is you – incomplete. But have more faith in me and I can complete you”. I knew that God was asking me to take a new step in forming a new, real relationship with him and I took that step.”
Transform was brilliant – the worship, teaching, fellowship and fun. But above all, seeing Jesus do what only he can do in people’s lives was unbeatable. We finished off Transform in the Leys camp with a bring ‘n’ share meal (whatever we had left over which consisted of lots of crisps and cakes!). We broke bread together with what we had – Ribena and tortilla wraps! It was a great way to celebrate salvation.
In 2001, in the era after Days of Destiny and before 28:18 and Transform, the French speaking part of Salt and Light held their first summer camp. It was held in Blois, and remembered for rain (by French standards) and a long search for a campsite that would allow Christian activities. This year Destinée celebrated 10 years since the first French-speaking camp, gathered at Chalon-sur-Soane. It opened with an evening celebrating the 10 years since the first camp, recalling some of the highlights. The week went on to include the traditional boules tournament (and with last year’s champions missing there was all to play

July 2011 in Thame saw 20 local churches working together to put on their annual Lighthouse holiday club. Building on 3 previous years’ events, this year 830 5-11s signed up for a week of fun, games, sports, singing and Bible teaching, with 50% from non-churchgoing families. Ruth O’Connell (Community Church Thame) led the parent and toddler drop in, which attracted nearly 200 people. Over-11s were trained as young leaders and joined a 400-strong ‘crew’ of volunteer helpers. Overall, around 1500 people were involved. The impact of a very large communityserving project is significant, with the public from Thame and surrounding villages being well aware of the Christian basis of Lighthouse. Running in the first week of school holidays, Lighthouse taps into the need for summer childcare.

The worship team, led by Oxford export John Bilson (now pronounced ‘Beeel-sorn’), was up to the call and led with passion and zeal as we pursued the presence of God with vigour. A great camp; start brushing up your French now for next year!
Community Church Thame work together with the Newfrontiers church in Thame to lead kidzklub, a monthly Saturday morning follow-up event which regularly gathers 35-40 children, alongside a relaxed parent café. There is also an inter-church alternative Halloween event, ‘Lightenup’, and this year many churches ran post-Lighthouse ‘relight’ family services. The Lighthouse movement was started in Great Missenden in 1987 when several churches decided to work with children and young people during the school holiday. Within a few years nearly 2,000 children were accommodated in eleven marquees and two halls; and by 2007, Lighthouse events were running in Great Missenden, Hazlemere, Burnham and Princes Risborough. Lighthouse Thame started in 2008.
