Spring is in the air, hallelujah!
Who doesn’t love the sight of green grass, baby animals and the smell of spring? It’s kind of like seeing a rainbow, to me it feels like God’s promise to do it all again. Boy wouldn’t life be easier if we all got do overs? We would more easily be able to predict the outcome of decisions, relationships, purchases and life in general if we just had a practice run. Back to reality, it’s not going to happen. We have to make the best of each situation in real time. When you are in the cattle business, real time can still mean years of herd development. Let’s face it poor decisions pertaining to your cow herd can lead to years of paying for them. Where we get into trouble is when our desire to get a deal over rides our best interest, especially when it comes to purchasing replacement stock and, you got it BULLS. Just think about how long it takes to put a replacement heifer back in the herd and generating income. There is 9 1/2 months of gestation, 7 months on momma, another 7 to 12 months of growing while getting groomed with feed and vaccinations, 9 ½ months of carrying a calf and another 7 months until the calf is marketed, WOW that’s a long time! If you are going to invest that much time and money into your females, why would you bargain hunt when searching for your next herd bull? I’m not even sure how one really puts a value to that. You certainly can’t afford do overs. I do know how unhappy we are at the BUB Ranch when we use highly anticipated outside genetics and get a dud. It just costs too much to have throw aways in the cattle business. Every calf from every cow needs to be all it can be. That is why when choosing a bull to sire replacement females, cheaper is not always better. You are paying $500 to $1500 more for the added work we do within the registered herd. Culling for perfect udders that milk, sound feet, decent dispositions, fertility, and keeping impeccable records, is something we can’t really put a price on. When you buy a BUB Bull, you are buying a piece of our herd, our blood sweat and tears, and our knowledge that only comes from the hands on relentless hours of time and work we spend with our herd. Spring breeding season is just around the corner, stop by or call and see what we have to offer this spring, we don’t think you will be disappointed. Don’t just add value you can see in the cattle, add value at the market also by using a BUB Bull. Predictable genetics, predictable outcome, no do overs! Myth of the month: “Any bull does the same job anywhere” …… false, cattle are environmentally adapted to different regions. Cheddar Beef Enchiladas Yield: 2 casseroles, 5 to 6 enchiladas each 1 lb. ground beef 1 envelope taco seasoning 1 cup water 2 cups cooked rice 1 can (16 oz) refried beans 2 cups shredded cheese, divided 10 to 12 flour tortillas (8”) warmed 1 jar (16 oz) salsa 1 can condensed cream of chicken soup, diluted In a large skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink, drain. Stir in taco seasoning and water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, simmer uncovered for 5 minutes. Stir in rice. Cook and stir until liquid is evaporated. Spread about 2 tablespoons of refried beans, 1/4 cup of the beef mixture and 1 tablespoon cheese down the center of each tortilla, roll up. Place seam side down in 2 greased 13x9x2” baking dishes. Combine salsa and soup, pour down the center of the enchiladas. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Bake 1 casserole, uncovered, at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes or until heated through and cheese is melted. Then repeat for the other casserole. **Casserole can be frozen up to 3 months** Thaw in refrigerator over night. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Uncover, bake 5 to 10 minutes longer or until heated through and cheese is melted.
