UNDERSTANDING THE MESSAGE OF THE PROPHETS “JONAH – THEN JONAH PRAYED” “So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging. … now the lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. then Jonah prayed unto the lord his God out of the fish’s belly, …” (Jonah 1:15 thru 2:1). Prayer is a privilege reserved only for those who worship and serve God, “now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth” (John 9:31). Peter penned, “For the eyes of the lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the lord is against them that do evil” (1st Peter 3:12). this is in keeping with what isaiah said, “Behold, the lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear” (isaiah 59:1-2). the Proverbial writer wrote, “he that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination” (Proverbs 28:9). Men are free to cry unto God, but unless they are actively serving him, he offers a deaf ear. like Jonah did on this occasion, many of us turn to prayer only as a last resort. God, however, wants us to pray unto him on a continuous basis and not to be sporadic in prayer. the Jew prayed three times daily. David said, “evening, and morning, and at noon, will i pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice” (Psalms 55:17). it was Daniel’s custom to pray thrice daily, “now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, as the did aforetime” (Daniel 6:10). Paul told those at thessalonica, “Pray without ceasing” (1st thessalonians 5:17). We need to develop regular prayer habits. in order for our prayers to be heard and acceptable unto God, we must know how to pray. Jesus’ disciples once asked him, “and it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples” (luke 11:1). note, John had taught his disciples how to pray and Jesus proceeded to do the same with his disciples, “after this manner therefore pray ye: …” (Matthew 6:9). James said unto the twelve scattered tribes, “ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts” (James 4:3). Perhaps if we knew better how to pray, what to pray for, and what not to pray for; God might be more inclined to hearken unto our prayers. Please don’t wait until the next catastrophe transpires before you go unto God in prayer, lest it become sin unto you, “Moreover as for me, God forbid that i should sin against the lord in ceasing to pray for you: but i will teach you the good and the right way:” (1st Samuel 12:23).
