UNDERSTANDING THE MESSAGE OF THE PROPHETS “HOSEA – THOU DIDEST TRUST IN THY WAYS”

“Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; ye have eaten the fruit of lies: because thou didest trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men” (Hosea 10:13). The wickedness and evil that was about to befall Israel was a result of their own self reliance and refusal to walk in the way of God. Jeremiah said, “O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps” (Jeremiah 10:23). And, the Wiseman warned, “There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Proverbs 14:12). Sin not only leads to spiritual death (Romans 6:23), it also leads to individual and societal woes. Solomon asked, “Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine” (Proverbs 23:29-30). To this he adds, “Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things” (Proverbs 23:33). Again, the Wiseman penned, “But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul. A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away. For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance. He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts” (Proverbs 6:32-35). Drunkenness and promiscuity leave broken homes, abandoned children, unwed pregnancies, abortions, murders, and such like. These sins, like all other sins, lead to individual and societal decay and poverty. Truly, the ways of man are detrimental and destructive to himself and others and men and nations who trust therein are doomed to reap misery and woe. To the contrary, the ways of God give life, first eternal, and, secondly physical. Jesus said, “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63). And again, “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this” (John 11:25-26)? To the surprise of many, not only does God’s ways give eternal life, they promise longer and better quality of life here on earth too. Paul wrote, “For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life which now is, and of that which is to come” (1st Timothy 4:8). In light of the above one might ask, “Why did Israel insist on walking in her own ways, instead of the ways of God?” But then again, we might ask, “why does America insist on walking in her own ways, instead of in the ways of God”, or, “why do you dear friend, continue to insist on walking in your own ways, instead of the ways of God?
