UNDERSTANDING THE MESSAGE OF THE PROPHETS “HOSEA – THOU HAST FALLEN” “O Israel, return unto the Lord thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity” (Hosea 14:1, all emphasis mine – LY).

“Once saved, always saved” – “The Perseverance of the Saints” – “The impossibility of Apostasy” etc. are all false doctrines. Israel, God’s chosen people, had fallen!

Many, like Israel of old, have fallen from the grace of God. Luke said that Judas fell by transgression, “And they prayed and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place” (Acts 1:24-25). Paul warned, “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall” (1st Corinthians 10:13). To the wayward Galatians, Paul wrote, “Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace” (Galatians 5:4). It is possible for men to fall from grace.

One might ask, what about the statement of John in his first epistle, “Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin, for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God” (1st John 3:9). First, let us note that the seed in this passage is the word of God, “Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God” (Luke 8:11).

Therefore, as long as we allow that seed, or word, to live within our heart and to guide us, we cannot sin. But when we cast the seed out of our heart we can and do sin against God. This is very similar to Jude’s observation in the book that bears his name, “Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:” (Jude v1). As long as we abide in the preservative, Jesus Christ, we are preserved. But, when we cast away the preservative, Jesus no longer abides in us and we are not preserved.

John again penned, “Whoso transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son” (2nd John v9).

Paul was aware of the possibility of his own apostasy, “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway” (1st Corinthians 9:27). Even some of the angels have fallen, “For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment” (2nd Peter 2:4). Moreover, Paul wrote to Timothy, warning of the possibility of some who would depart from the faith, “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils” (1st Timothy 4:1).
